Axel from Wizo

CM: Do short attention spans equal short tunes?

Excuse me, what was the first part of the question again, please? Seems like the whole "short-attn.-thing" is more a typical American topic, I've often heard it as a (rather bad) excuse. In Germany nobody really talks about stuff like that. It's probably just a common small talk-theme. And honestly, I don't believe that "the Americans" have a shorter attn.span than "the Germans"

CM: Short songs have a long tradition in punk. Do you see them as a novelty or are they something more than that?

I personally think, a song has to be as long as it has to be. There's enough very short songs (even on the "short music"-comp) that are already too long. I think "Tubular Bells" from Mike Oldfield is maybe a little too short, but it's not actually punk, so I can deal with that.

CM: What is your favorite cut on "Short Music For Short People" other than your own.

I really like the very first song a lot. How comes you think that bands always like their own songs best? I also like Chixdiggitdickiessickofitall! Did I mention that there's a lot of crap too?

CM: What is the best thing about short people and the worst thing about tall people?

You wanna ask me who I like better from Lagwagon, Joey or Chris? You son of a bitch, I love both of them like a mother loves her sons!!

CM: And lastly, what is the best thing about short 5 question interviews?

I think the most interesting part were those informations you gave me about your person and your psychical condition in between the lines of those questions, haha! Seems like there could be SOMETHING too short on your body? Or maybe even worse, there's something too long, oh yes I can see it clear now, your THING is too big for this world, that's why you're scared of short people... It all comes together now... Why don't you call me before you do something inconsiderate! We'll figure something!

Nine Inch Nails – The Fragile 8.5/10

Disc 1(Left):
1. Somewhat Damaged
2. The Day The World Went Away
3. The Frail
4. The Wretched
5. We’re In This Together
6. The Fragile
7. Just Like You Imagined
8. Even Deeper
9. Pilgrimage
10. No, You Don’t
11. La Mer
12. The Great Below

Disc 2 (Right):
1. The Way Out Is Through
2. Into the Void
3. Where Is Everybody?
4. The Mark Has Been Made
5. Please
6. Starf*ckers, Inc
7. Complication
8. I’m Looking Forward To Joining You, Finally
9. The Big Come Down
10. Underneath It All
11. Ripe (With Decay)

The CD version clocks in at over an hour and 40 minutes, and the LP is even longer. To truly digest and appreciate this album, you’ll need to clear your schedule for a bit, grab your best pair of headphones, and dive in.

The Downward Spiral brought worldwide attention to Nine Inch Nails in 1994, and for five years fans waited for the next sonic journey into Trent Reznor’s twisted world. The result was a two-disc magnum opus, something he is unlikely to top in the near future. The music on here is charged and emotional, and maybe more mature than its predecessor.

That’s not to say that EVERY song is a masterpiece. There are times when the album slows to a drag, as the angst, processed guitars, and layered synthesizers become old. Even then, there is reward in picking out the fine details and nuances only found in Nine Inch Nails releases.

In my personal opinion, the second disc (Right) is more enjoyable and memorable than the first. Songs like The Way Out Is Through, into The Void, Please, and the Big Come Down are shining examples of Reznor’s song craft, providing strong synth lines and deep bass that drive the tracks and keep them in your head long afterwards.

Still, the length does become problematic, and for the average listener, it may be too cumbersome to listen to compared to releases like The Downward Spiral and With Teeth. The songs themselves are great, but might just be too much of a good thing.

Leander Paes & Lukas Dlouhy

Some great news in tennis for India. Leander Paes has reached the finals of both the men's doubles and mixed doubles at the US Open.

Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy sprinted into the men's doubles final by pulverising Argentine duo Maximo Gonzalez and Juan Monaco 6-2, 6-0 in just 46 minutes. (Lines courtesy: Rediff)

Cara Black

Meanwhile in the mixed doubles, Paes and his partner Cara Black of Zimbabwe beat Nadia Petrova and Jonas Bjorkman 6-4, 6-4 to reach the finals.

The last time Leander Paes achieved such a result was in the 1999 Wimbledon. Will he be able to repeat this feat at the last Grand Slam of the year ?

Classes start tomorrow, meaning tonight is my first school night in four months. And in which case,

Classes start tomorrow, meaning tonight is my first school night in four months. And in which case, I'm exactly where I should be - the last one awake, sitting in front of the computer and occasionally lurking Facebook, putting off sleep by watching the latest episode of Weeds with my earphones in. Though tonight I'm significantly less tired and I also (thankfully) don't have any reading or writing to plow through yet.

After cramming an entire summer of traipsing-around-NYC-like-a-tourist-and-partying-like-it's-1999* into these past eight days, I've reached the final stages of unpacking. And I cannot believe how much stuff I've accumulated in the two-and-a-half years I've been in college. I blame this pack rat habit on my sentimental tendency to bestow meaning upon (and subsequently save) everythingg. I mean, today I found the pack of cigarettes that I legally bought when I turned eighteen and never smoked; 2007 birthday cards still in their envelopes; and several cute, heart-shaped notes from my mother reminding me that she loves me.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="504" caption="Maria, Emily, and I (roommates!) last year. My wall = so many pictures! Too many to keep up with/update. "][/caption]

Since this packing and moving process is now routine - regularly transitioning between dorm, home, and apartment every year - it has become impractical and unnecessary to hold onto everything. So I've decided to take a page from Max's book and attempt some form of minimalism. I need less stuff. Because it's too tiring to physically take my entire past with me and because it's entirely possible to remain sentimental/nostalgic by looking through old Facebook photos and commenting on old friends' walls. And by reading old blog posts. Yup, the internet is my digital anti(-hoarding)drug. That, and I can access my memories on any web device without having to strap a crate of pictures/mementos to my back.

*Oh, and speaking of summer of 1999...[click that link by the asterisk.]

This week Sports Card Info is starting a new feature called "Flashback Product of the Week". Today I'm taking you back to the late 90's, where game used relics were fairly new and insert cards were all the rage. This week I'm talking about 1998 and 1999 Topps Action Flats. Topps went in a little different direction with this product. When you opened a box and looked down to see what you got, all you could see were these tiny little figures looking back at you like a twisted "Toy Story" army. Each pack contained a miniature plastic figure of an athlete that resembled a flattened pancake, and one Topps card. There really wasn't anything different about the card except it had a foil logo on it that said "Action Flats". Other than that it looked exactly like a regular Topps base card. I'll admit that I purchased a few of these back in the day when I was a young collector. I think I had a Dan Marino and Mark McGwire. After 1999 these really didn't pan out and Topps stopped making them. If you ask me, I can't believe they made more than one series of this product.

Traditional or shlock? Whatever the arguement, the fact is, Monster Mash is a cult classic from any genre. Hippy often tells me his time period was far superior. Music was more fun, more wholesome, with songs like "Splish Splash", "Yakety Yak", "Flick The Fire Engine" (huh?), "Guitarzan", "The Twist" & probably millions more and he is probably 100% correct, but the truth is we can't (will not?) return to those days. The world is to digital now. We watched Saddam Hussein being hanged, we watched Brtiney embarrass herself, simply. we do not miss a thing now. Back in Hippy's day nothing was "now" or "instant" you had to wait weeks before you could get your mits on a new album by Elvis or the Beatles. Motion picture films took months to be released. This is why the world will never have its wholesome fun again & to be honest i don't think people care anymore. Just don't tell Hippy.

Genuinely shocking or tasteless, campy fun? It was sometimes hard to tell which way the Misfits wanted to be taken, and the immense cult following that has grown up in the years after their actual existence (1977-1983) seems divided in its own assessment. It certainly wasn't the Misfits' musicianship -- which was as crude as the recording quality of most of their oeuvre -- that endeared them to so many, although Glenn Danzig possessed one of the most distinctive and tuneful bellows in hardcore punk. Name-drops and covers by metal bands like Metallica and Guns N' Roses kept the Misfits' songs circulating during the mid- to late '80s, when their tangled discography remained only sporadically in print -- reissues were maddeningly incomplete, and much of the band's prime material was confined to rare singles and EPs. The mid-'90s saw a spate of CD reissues that, while not quite presenting all of the Misfits' songs in the most concise, collectible format, at least succeeded in getting them all back into print, allowing those who missed the band the first time around to hear why they've enjoyed such enduring cult popularity.

What does Rolling Stone think about the Misfits?

Taken from American Psycho: In 1977, the original misfits wedded the melodic use of power chords to a B-movie aesthetic. Their second record, Walk Among Us, is a classic because singer Glenn Danzig avoided mere camp by injecting songs like "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?" and "Vampira" with adolescent lust, range and nastiness. After a Halloween show in 1983, the Misfits broke up, leaving behind a fanatic cult following. A coffin-shape box set – a fitting epitaph – brought together most of their recordings.

End of story? Not exactly. The Misfits have returned from the grave – resurrected not by Satan but by litigation. After a nine-year fight, bass player Jerry Only, a founding member, and his brother Doyle were allowed to record and tour as the Misfits (adding Michale Graves on vocals and a new drummer). Graves does a credible imitation of Glenn Danzig. But the singer's generic vocals are as likely to career into Dexter Holland territory or a pointless Elvis imitation ("Day of the Dead"). The band seems desperate to claim the Misfits' self-proclaimed legacy of brutality ("Walk Among Us"). The musical formula hasn't changed: some old-style punk, a little metal and an occasional all-out thrasher. But this album feels less like the Misfits and more like Elvira. The song titles read like a quick trip through the video store ("The Haunting," "This Island Earth," "The Hunger," "Mars Attacks," etc.). There are few hooks and no memorable songs on American Psycho. All this longtime fan can say is, "Quick, Van Helsing, a stake." (RS 760)

"Antes do Elodia...

[caption id="attachment_21" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Capa do Elodia"][/caption]

Disfruteu.
