<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What is Accenture up to in India? Is it differentiated from the Indian vendors or has it fallen into the commodity trap?</p>
<p>The answer in mixed. Accenture reports its revenues under two heads: Consulting and Outsourcing. In 2007, Consulting accounted for 60% of its $19.7 billion revenue with outsourcing accounting for the remaining 40%. This consulting revenue is the clear differentiation between Accenture and the Indian vendors.</p>
<p>That said, it is the outsourcing part that drew Accenture to set up delivery centers in India. Hence, if you look at what Accenture does in India and what any other Indian vendor does, there is not much difference. It is a clear commodity play, with capacity leasing as the keystone!</p>

<p>Check out this excerpt from the Accenture 10-K filing for fiscal 2007:</p>

<p align="left">Our headcount increased to approximately 170,000 as of August 31, 2007 from approximately 140,000 as of August 31, 2006. Annualized attrition for the three months and year ended August 31, 2007 was 18%, excluding involuntary terminations, consistent with the three months and year ended August 31, 2006. We continue to add substantial numbers of new employees and will continue to actively recruit new employees to balance our mix of skills and resources to meet current and projected future demands, replace departing employees and expand our global sourcing approach, which includes our Global Delivery Network and other capabilities around the world. We have adjusted compensation in fiscal 2007 in certain skill sets and geographies in order to attract and retain appropriate numbers of qualified employees and we may need to continue to adjust compensation in the future. As in previous fiscal years, we have adjusted and expect to continue to adjust pricing with the objective of recovering these increases. Our margins and ability to grow our business could be adversely affected if we do not continue to manage attrition, recover increases in compensation and effectively assimilate and utilize large numbers of new employees.</p>

<p align="left">A clear commodity play if ever there was one!</p>
<p align="left">Sure, Accenture has consulting revenue of $11.86 billion, but if you work for Accenture in India there is every likelihood you are a commodity in a good campus conforming to the Accenture Delivery Suite!</p>
<p>In effect, Accenture has chosen to neutralize the Indian vendors low-cost capacity-leasing advantage by adopting the same model itself in India and combining that with its strong consulting capabilities in the rest of the world. Excellent business strategy to keep the Indian vendors at bay; and it is indeed a testament to Accenure's execution ability that they have been able to combine two such vastly different cultures within the same organization successfully (this is what HP-EDS-MphasiS will struggle to do into the foreseeable future).</p>
<p>But, a commodity play all the same.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Interesantes resultados los ofrecidos por el primer "<strong>Estudio de Inversión en Marketing y Publicidad Móvil</strong>" realizado por Accenture y la Mobile Marketing Association en España (MMA Spain).</p>
<p>En estos momentos la inversión en este canal de comunicación asciende a <strong>28,6 millones de euros</strong> y las previsiones apuntan a <strong>incrementos anuales del 70% hasta el año 2012</strong>. Asimismo, el trabajo señala que alrededor del <strong>4% de los presupuestos publicitarios del año 2009 podrían dedicarse a móvil</strong>.</p>
<p>El estudio, reaizado entre los miembros de MMA Spain, muestra que los sectores protagonistas de este nuevo medio son el <strong>financiero </strong>(3,6 millones de euros), las <strong>telecomunicaciones </strong>(3,07 millones) y la <strong>alimentación </strong>(2,4 millones de euros).</p>

What makes the blogosphere great is that one doesn't have to. Case in point, it has been a long time since I looked at the Philippines as a destination, though it clearly has been around for a while and has achieved a certain maturity. I asked my new friend <a title="Paul's blog" href="http://sorryiminthephilippines.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Paul Michael Briones </a>to do a first-hand, on-the-ground guest post about what he is experiencing at his home in Cebu City, and he graciously accepted. Here is what Paul had to say:</p>
<p> </p>
<blockquote><p>When talking about hot locations for BPO, the Philippines almost always make it in the top 5. It's a former US colony, with a 94% literacy rate, a lot in common with US culture, and the people here have a cheery disposition. The <a href="http://www.gov.ph/news/default.asp?i=6765">government website</a> claims that we are the happiest people in Asia. (Globally, we rank number six behind the Dutch).</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>BPO in the Philippines has been growing at an explosive rate, the skyline of Cebu, where I live, has changed dramatically over the past five years. Billboards abound with names like <a href="http://www.wipro.com">Wipro</a>, <a href="http://www.convergys.com">Convergys</a> and <a href="http://www.accenture.com">Accenture</a> encouraging fresh graduates to apply. And apply they do, with an acceptance rate that would be the envy of any Ivy League University, call centres accept around 6% of total applicants.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>Skylines are not the only thing that has changed. Up until five years ago, a typical college graduate in Cebu could look forward to a salary of around two hundred dollars a month. With all these new call centre jobs, disposable incomes have skyrocketed as some agents can earn up to five hundred dollars a month.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>BPO has changed everyday life. Talk with a taxi driver and he will gush over how call centres have increased his business two-fold. Talk to a bar owner and he will speak of the volumes of beer that they sell on Monday night to call centre agents who have a day off. A passing Jeepney (colourful public transport) often has a <a href="http://www.teletech.com/en-us/">Teletech</a> signboard on the top.</p></blockquote>

<blockquote><p>Surprisingly, the Philippines continue to focus on the voice enabled services (call centres). With the abundance of Lawyers and accountants that practice a profession whose rules and regulations were copied from the US, you would expect more KPI services. There are a few, such as Office Tiger and <a href="http://www.innodata-isogen.com/">Innodata</a>, but a majority of them are Indian based.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>    The Philippines, and especially Cebu, also have a hard time filling the management requirements for large centres. That's why a lot of Indian and American Expats are here to help get the centres on their feet. <img src="http://yourflatworld.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/100308-2309-philippines2.jpg" alt="" align="right" />This has created a lot of friction as Filipinos are notoriously hard to manage. It is said you need to have a very large emotional quotient to effectively function in Filipino society. It's a learning experience on both ends.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>    The Philippine government and the local governmental units have been extremely supportive of the BPO industry. If you locate in a PEZA (<a href="http://www.peza.gov.ph"><span style="font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial;">www.<strong>peza</strong>.gov.ph</span></a><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#008000;font-family:Arial;">) </span>registered zone a foreign entity can own 100% of the corporation, have a four year income tax holiday, and be Value Added Tax exempt for all capital purchases. In Cebu the Cebu Investment Promotional Board (<a href="http://www.cebuinvest.com/"><span style="font-size:9pt;font-family:Arial;">www.<strong>cebu</strong>invest.com/</span></a><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#008000;font-family:Arial;">) </span>is a local NGO that assists any foreign investors interested in the Philippines free of charge.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>    I know it seems that I am giving one big sales pitch, but I also admit like any country or city, nobody is perfect. Cebu suffers from lack of infrastructure, with occasional power outages and severe traffic problems in the North. Lack of manpower is another major concern as not only are call centres competing with each other but with the Filipino exodus abroad. I think that the best part about working in Cebu is that you are never more than half an hour away from the beach.</p></blockquote>

<title><![CDATA[International Coastal Clean-Up 2008]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Manila, Philippines -- 150 volunteers from Accenture joined the International Coastal Clean-Up 2008 held at Roxas Boulevard, Manila. This event was simultaneously held around the world where volunteers gathered to their coast to remove trash. </p>

<p>Accenture has been participating for this cause for several years now. Its my 3rd time to participate. APC (Accenture Photography Club) was commissioned to cover this event and I was one of the volunteer photographer. There where five of us from the club.</p>

<p>Around 6:30am in the morning our bus drop us in-front of Malate Church just along Roxas Blvd. We proceeded to the booth then signed our names and get our free t-shirt. After that I started covering the events that took place. The clean-up started with a brief instructions from the organizers. We are divided into 4 groups then assigned to different areas of the bay. I joined the group who will ride the barge and remove trash floating in the water. I made this choice since the last time I volunteer to clean I was assigned at the beach. We went inside the Manila Yacht Club and proceeded to the docking area. We were around 27 people on-board  the barge. The Captain took us near the breakwater. The volunteers uses nets to get the trash then they put it inside a sack.</p>

<p>We are kinda crammed in the barge so its really hard to move. The volunteers where able to collect several sacks of trash. Past 9am we headed back to the Yacht Club to unload the trash. Then, we headed towards the assembly area to take a rest and eat our breakfast. The event ended with the usual picture taking and a talk from the organizers and volunteers.</p>

<p>Ofcourse we are not able to clean the whole Manila Bay but this experience thought me a lot of things. It made me realize that we have to start caring for our environment. The collective effort of this volunteers is a small step to start something big, something that will make people realize to stop polluting our seas and oceans. Hopefully our efforts made an impact. We should all realized that Water is life.  </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:&#34;color:black;">A new survey from Accenture of those who rely on digital devices and services shows that 87 percent of respondents said they thought digital devices would be networked and that 81 percent said they would like a single company to provide that network. The study also reported that most people said they believed companies such as Google and Yahoo! were more likely to deliver that linked service than telecommunications firms.</span></p>
<p>From <a href="http://telephonyonline.com/wireless/news/networked-devices-0926/">Telephony</a>:</p>
<p><em>Tech-savvy consumers would like to have a single networked service to support their many digital devices but they are also demanding a high level of customer service and aren’t certain that telecommunications service providers are up to the challenge, according to a new survey by Accenture called “Telecommunications Competitive Future Research: A Consumer Perspective.”</em></p>
<p><!--end paragraph--> <!--begin paragraph--><em>The study surveyed 600 global consumers described as “heavy users of digital devices and services,” and found 87% believed that most digital devices, whether portable, in the home or in the car, would be networked. The preference among 81% of those surveyed was for a single company to provide that networking and customer support.</em></p>
<p><em>The same research data shows, however, that consumers rate Internet companies such as Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft ahead of telecom players as most likely providers of this networked digital device world, followed by consumer electronics companies and retailers, who ranked last.</em></p>

Nag-petiks ng sandali hanggang mag-lologin na<br />
Pagpindot ng login, ayaw na; "Shet! Sira yung <span style="font-style:italic;">Avaya*</span>!"</p>
<p>Tumayo ako at hinagilap kung saan man siya<br />
Nangmakasalubong ko ay napapraning kong winika<br />
"<span style="font-style:italic;">TL*</span>! Wala akong station! Software - may Avaya issue!"<br />
Sabi niya, "Sige, i-log mo muna dito, at ikaw ay mag-<span style="font-style:italic;">LILO*</span>."</p>
<p>Nakakabanas, mababawasan na naman ang sahod ko<br />
Nakakainis, bakit kasi kulang-kulang ng mga station dito?<br />
Tumayo ako ulit at sa floor ay nagpagala-gala<br />
Nag-iisip, "Hanggang anong oras ako walang ginagawa?"</p>
<p>Mabuti na lamang at may ahenteng naglog-out, sa wakas<br />
May station na rin ako at makakapag-calls na, at last!<br />
Paglog-in ko, buti nalang walang tawag na pumasok<br />
Walang <span style="font-style:italic;">queue*</span>, high <span style="font-style:italic;">avail*</span>, mahabang petiks na nakasusulasok</p>

Nag-hihintay ng tawag mula sa customer na masarap sapakin<br />
Nang may pumasok na call, ako'y naghanda na ng sasabihin<br />
Sa Amerikanong member na galit at ayoko ng asarin</p>
<p>Nagsimula na kaming mag-usap at mag-troubleshoot<br />
Pero ayaw niyang makinig, salita niya'y puno ng poot<br />
Ayaw niyang mag-cooperate, mura ang lumalabas sa bibig<br />

<div style="text-align:left;"><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Facilities</span> &#62;&#62; lugar kung saan tinatago ang mga headset pag wala kang locker, ilolog mo yung pag-kuha at pagbalik mo</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Floor</span> &#62;&#62; maigsing tawag sa production floor. Doon lahat nag-cuculminate ang work life ng mga ahente, dun sila nagtetake ng calls.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Station</span> &#62;&#62; yung PC station mo, yung "desk" mo sa opisinang may PC para magamit mo. Sa amin NPS - No Permanent Station. Bahala kang maghanap ng free, pag wala sorry ka nalang.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Avaya</span> &#62;&#62; ang software na ginagamit para mag-take in ng calls. Soft phone ito, naka-set na kumuha ng connection sa LAN para makatanggap ng calls mula ibang bansa.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*TL</span> &#62;&#62; Team Leader. Supervisor.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*LILO </span>&#62;&#62; Log In, Log Out. Literal na mag-lolog in ka tapos ilolog out mo rin agad. Para lang pumasok sa time stamp mo na naglog in ka sa tamang oras, lalo pag wala kang station.  First 30 minutes lang ang binabayaran sa lilo, pag wala ka paring station beyond that span of time, lost hours na yun at lost pesos na rin sa sahod ang exceeding.<br />
<br /> <span style="font-weight:bold;">*Queue</span> &#62;&#62; yung "nakapilang" calls sa linya na nakahold at nag-aantay na sagutin nyo.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Avail</span> &#62;&#62; ibig sabihin, walang queue o calls. Petiks.<br />
<br /> <span style="font-weight:bold;">*Aux </span>&#62;&#62; work mode sa Avaya mo na hindi papasok ang calls dahil assigned ka sa certain task. Example: Aux1 = 15 minute break, Aux2 = floorwalk, Aux3 = team meeting, Aux4 = training, Aux5 = callback/outbound call, Aux6 = personal break/cr, Aux7 = coaching ng TL. Usually, aux nalang ang tawag namin sa aux1 o 15 minute break. Yun kasi yung nang-yayari araw-araw.<br />
<br /> <span style="font-weight:bold;">*Floorwalker</span> &#62;&#62; mga tenured agents na parang mga tanod. Mga tumutulong sa mga hindi na alam ang gagawin sa pagtotroubleshoot, substitute ng mga TL sa pagbibigay ng approval sa mga transfer o escalation sa mga higher departments at mga nagfafalg ng mga overbreak.<br />
<br /> <span style="font-weight:bold;">*File note</span> &#62;&#62; written warning. memo.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Auto In</span> &#62;&#62; Incoming calls-ready mode. Ibig sabihin pag ganyan, nag-aantay kang may pumasok na call. Pag matagl kang naka-auto in ibig sabihin avail at walang queue.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">*Entity code</span> &#62;&#62; ang code na pipindutin sa Avaya dial pad para ma-hold si caller at makakuha ng dial tone para makatawag sa ibang department<br />
<br /> <span style="font-weight:bold;">*Transfer code</span> &#62;&#62; yung code as per department na iinput mo pag nag-dial tone na after mo pindutin ang entity code para makatawag ka sa department nila<br />

<description><![CDATA[Yes. I know. I have heard from you all about how I vanished from the place that I loved most. And se]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yes. I know. I have heard from you all about how I vanished from the place that I loved most. And seriously, I did have a wide grin when you said that you missed me. :) Yet, playing to the gallery isn't my forte at all. Life is caught in a swirl of change and am riding the wave in a gleeful manner. This time the change is in my career. A rapid shift in my career sees me taking a bit of stretch role in a new industry with a new set of roles and responsibilities. What could be a better learning experience than shirking the comfort zone in search of unexplored terrain?</p>
<p>I am so used to the lingo of R&#38;D, a world high strung with drama, energy, passion and smart people since past three years that letting it go has been tough on me. Thanks for those rough weather friends who made this easy on me. Thanks for those long conversations, sweet many things, nice long walks and small special treats. I can't thank enough for those special moments that filled my life during those moments of indecision and tension.</p>
<p>Sometimes I wonder if I take my life too easily and work way too seriously. Putting the glass down has been easy to preach and too tough to practice. And hence this long pause to indulge myself in contemplation and solitude. Farewell times are often tough, yet they are much needed for true friends to meet again. I am moving on with some bitter sweet memories to fill those nostalgic moments and somehow Bilbo's last song steals the moment for the day.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The biofuels industry, once the poster child of the new energy economy and purported savior of the internal combustion engine, is again discovering that the road to global primacy is rougher than expected. According to <a href="http://newsroom.accenture.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=4747">a report released</a> by Accenture entitled “Biofuels’ Time of Transition: Achieving high performance in a world of increasing fuel diversity,” three main obstacles will hinder the sector's growth: environmental issues, distribution and infrastructure shortcomings. These pesky inconveniences aside, Accenture estimates biofuels could make up 10-15 percent of the future fuels mix in the next 10-20 years.</p>
<p>However, that window of opportunity is quickly closing as competing technologies gain ground. The report says that existing biofuels will have to become as global and efficient as possible in the next decade lest algae and biotech-based fuels and electric vehicles supplant them. Despite all this, Accenture is certain that biofuels "will be here for the foreseeable future.”</p>
<p>This study is decidedly less optimistic than <a href="http://newsroom.accenture.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=4582">a similar report on the global biofuels market</a> Accenture issued a year ago. At the time, the food-vs.-fuel debate was a murmur and the biggest barriers identified were scalability of feedstocks and the impact energy giants like China, India and Japan might have should they wade into the biofuel brouhaha. But a prescient senior executive in Accenture’s Energy industry group said then: "We believe that biofuels will experience a cycle similar to that of the Internet during the dot-com bubble.” Pop!</p>
