Free thinking and free communication will be censored or even forbidden

By Andreas Klamm

New York / London/3mnewswire.org/-- Many people in the United States of America and in Germany are so much worried about the fact that government institutions and huge massive telecommunication companies could spy on them.

In Germany people are very well used to the total observation by the German intelligence services such as the Gestapo during the years 1933 to 1945 and the STASI during the years 1945 to 1990. This is not new to the people in Germany that companies and governmental organization do spy on them since many years already.

The danger is surely that if telecommunications companies do spy constantly on managers, military forces members, politicians and other people these people which have been “monitored” could easily become a victim of an extortion.

In summer 2008 it has been discovered that the biggest German telecommunication company has spied on journalists, managers, politicians and actually all people in Germany. The new so called Anti-Terror laws made it easily going to happen that about 82 million people in Germany are accounted as “potential terrorists” in Germany and the German military will have to fight against German citizen. Imagine the poor German soldier which will receive the order “Shoot her, shoot your grandma, daughter, neighbor as German soldiers usually follow simply the instructions which are given by commanders, “order is order”.” The German soldiers will be polite and friendly and tell their daughters, sons and grandparents: “Sorry, but order is order, I have to kill you”. As they did during they years in 1933 to 1945. German soldiers have been this brave that they have tried to attack Russia, knowing very well that there is no chance to win the war against Russia.

If there would be 82 million people terrorists in Germany this certainly could be a real threat to national security in Germany. But how realistic is it going to happen that 82 million people in Germany will be on the payroll of the Al-Qaeda network and Osama bin Laden (Usāmah bin Muḥammad bin Awaḍ bin Lādin). Does he know already about this massive rise in membership of his terror network?

Who in the world would believe that 260 million American citizen could be in the future willing to sign in as members with the Al-Qaeda network as this seems to be the thing which some political forces want us to believe. Would Osama bin Laden be able to handle this situation?

It was not a real shocking news that the German parliament has decided about one week ago that the German military known as Bundeswehr will be used in the upcoming war against democracy and demonstrators such as peace demonstrators in Germany

The German citizen or the people are used already to this circumstances, the use of the German military against citizen of Germany already since 2007. During the G8 summit in Heiligendamm military combat air craft and military combat vehicle have been used to “observe” the opposition and demonstrators against the G8 summit and many preemptive raids by massive police forces have been noticed.

Is it really a coincident only? In 1937 the German military called in the dark ages from 1933 to 1945 Wehrmacht has used against the opposition which have been not willing to support the Nazi-Terror-Regime and in many places in Germany the still so beloved the “Fuehrer – Adolf the Great”, better known as Adolf Hitler.

What people in the United States of America (U.S.A.) and in Germany might perhaps not be aware of is the fact that some so called “world elite thinkers” do believe that free thinking and free communication of any kind between many or all people has to be censored or to be prohibited.

Is this something new? Maybe or should I write “Mayday, mayday, mayday !” in the meaning of Mayday which is an emergency code word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications.

It derives from the French venez m'aider, meaning 'come help me'. It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency by many groups, such as police forces, pilots, the fire brigade, and transportation organizations. The call is always given three times in a row ("Mayday Mayday Mayday") to prevent mistaking it for some similar-sounding phrase under noisy conditions, and to distinguish an actual mayday call from a message about a mayday call, according to wikipedia.

So far as some people do remember the speech of one known as Adolf Hitler which has sad that Germany shall be above all.

"Electric wires, high and double
Won't let you Mom - you won't see your daughter
So don't believe those censored letters of mine
cause the truth is different; but don't cry, Mom.
And if you would like to seek out your child's trace
Don't ask anyone, don't knock anywhere:
look for the ashes in the fields of Auschwitz
It will be there. But don't cry - enough of bitterness here.
And if you would like to discover your child's trace
look for the ashes in the fields of Birkenau
They'll be there - so look for the ashes
In the fields of Auschwitz, in the woods of Birkenau,
Mom, look for the ashes - I'll be there!"

As you are able to read, to censor even letters from German concentration camps is not new to people in Germany. The victims of the Nazi-Terror-Regime can tell you real stories of any kind. Monika Dombke is only one of the victims of the German Nazi Holocaust and during 1933 to 1945 millions have people have been killed.

People in Germany are even used to mass murder also. In World War II 50 million people have been slaughtered, murdered or killed. It does not really matter how you call the fact that 50 million people are dead.

During 1933 to 1945 the victims of the Nazi regime have been burned in the crematory and you should not wonder if these things still continue going to happen in the so called “good old Germany”.

Germany is no doubt so very special and perhaps it is already truly above all as Hitler during his famous speeches has declared. Germany could be so easily even above the U.S presidency .

As long as people in the United States of America do not desire to live in the future in a country which most of the American citizen do not even know, the United States of Germany with its capital city Washington, D.C., they should consider to fight as peaceful as possible for liberty, democracy, peace and justice. Otherwise 260 million American citizen will face the consequences what it means to be a slave under torture in Germany.

The U.S. magazine Forbes has published three years in continuation that the German chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel “...is the most powerful woman on earth...”. In a public speech in 2005 the German chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel has declared in the future “...will Germany not able anymore to afford the luxury of a democracy...”. Only a short time after Adolf Hitler has said a similar thing, the world was engaged in World War II.

About the up coming stone age

One of my favorite writers, Albert Einstein has made the statements: "A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death. The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

If free communication will be censored or even forbidden, how in the world understanding shall be possible?

On November 4, 2008 it will be election day in the United States of America. Spend only 10 seconds on the strange idea that the German chancellor known as the most powerful woman on earth will take control over the U.S. presidency. She would be the very first emperor in charge of the European Union (500 million people) and the United States of Germany (260 million people) which has been known until the year 2008 as the United States of America (U.S.A.).

Perhaps people should consider if they truly want to become an inmate of some kind of concentration camp and will end up in a crematory.

The serious question which needs to be asked: Is this world during a global financial crisis truly able to afford the luxury of country known as Germany which could be above all?

He had to pay federal tax for the total income of 437,--. Euro for an entire year in 2007. He said recently,”...that he wants NOT to support the Nazi ideology and that Human Rights or social security do count nothing in Germany. If you are poor in Germany it actually means that you are not accounted even as a human being or in other words by no means poor people have any rights in Germany. I do know what I am talking about. If I would have any rights I would be allowed to leave the country which I do in not like. Many people in Germany have a great joy to kill children, women and disabled men. After three accidents in 1993, 1994, 1995 I am physically disabled. For 22 years I have paid all tax of all kind of medical, social and even unemployment insurance and federal tax. However I do receive nothing ! Disabled and poor people have no rights and the paper the so called human rights are written on is not worth one single cent in Germany. In 2007 he was questioned by German Police. The right for defense of an attorney was denied. You see if I mean no right, I mean absolutely no human rights, even not the right to be defended by an attorney. This is Germany and you should know this. The day when G-d will judge the earth and all which dwell on this earth is coming and G-D himself will take care of these and other things. People are laughing at me and other victims but they will stop their laughter the day when G-D himself will judge all which dwell in this world. Be certain, the judge will judge, even the judges. -- Nazis do bother me.

Wow. For the first time in a long time, I have no idea what I want to talk about. Writer's block, blogger's block, whatever you call it. But, I'm rarely affected by it. I never run out of ideas when I write my fanfiction, because with all of the warfare and conflicts being fought today, I never have a reason to run out of a good idea.

"So long as there are men, there will be wars," spoke Albert Einstein. Indeed, he war correct, for man has never found an excuse to avoid a war. And in my case, so long as there are wars, there will be ideas for me to continue to write about. Like I explained in other blog posts, I write from life. I take real-world incidents and I turn them into stories. I take actual events from my life and I apply them to my main character.

One example is the bombing of the Azizabad, Afghanistan village in which 30-90 civilians were killed by American aircraft. In my stories, since my character is part of the United Nations' global Defense Initiative, and the U.N. already has deployed troops to Afghanistan, my character will investigate this village to see for himself the devastation caused by the fighting. Being that i've never been in actual combat with live ammunition, I take my combat performances from the paintball battles I've fought and the videogames I play. They provide, to a degree, a good sense of realism and tactical maneuver which I capitalize off of by writing about it. They also provide good training exercises for when I am deployed into actual war.

so, as long as men keep killing each other, I'll keep writing about it. In effect, my stories will never be complete, for there will always be another battle to fight.

"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character" ~ On Developing Character in Students

The great physicist Albert Einstein once said, “Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of chara

The great physicist Albert Einstein once said, "Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character." How true those words ring today. Our attitudes color everything we do. How we act, how we react, how our emotions affect us and others around us all play a crucial role in defining our character. As educators, we play a crucial role in developing the right kind of character in our students; responsible, positive, thoughtful, reflective, respectful, courteous human beings, and the list could go on and on. The following are some ways for developing character and values in your students.

Developing Characters and Values

Students need to be taught morals in order to help develop their character and values. The values that teachers should focus on include: respect, the dignity of the individual, personal and civic responsibility, honesty, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and courage. Teachers need to create a warm, positive, and fair classroom environment in order to foster civility and respect in their classrooms. Offering rewards and showing disapproval for inappropriate behavior can also foster these values. If teachers act as caregivers, models, and mentors, they will more likely foster these values to their students.

Service learning is also a great way to help students develop these values and sense of character. Service learning allows values to be integrated into social studies by teaching civic responsibilities. Through service learning projects, students get students hands on experiences while helping the community.

Literature and Moral Education

When developing character, morals, and values in third graders, one of the most effective ways is to use literature. Students can relate to the characters and situations in stories. These books and stories can act as a springboard for discussion of issues that surround the development of character. If your classroom utilizes class meetings, using literature is a great way to make comparisons to issues that arise in your class. Students can see these connections between the printed world and the real world, saying "Remember what happened in _________ story?"

Moral Reasoning

Moral reasoning is an important skill that is taught in the primary grades. In a third grade social studies classroom, the teacher can teach moral reasoning in several different ways. The teacher can use books that will present moral dilemmas to the students, the students can critically think and write about dilemmas, or the teacher can present scenarios to the class that will require them to act out the problem and create a solution. Helping students reach higher levels of moral reasoning is important, otherwise their views will remain egocentric instead of taking into account all aspects of a situation.

The Need for Character

These techniques for developing character are all important, but it's not enough. Students need role models that show them what qualities a person with character possesses. As educators, it is our responsibility to model that behavior and be the role models they need. The best teacher is a positive example. If we don't set our attitudes straight, and keep our thoughts working toward the greater good of all humanity, how can we ever expect our students to possess the qualities that define character? If we are to be judged by the content of our character, let us ensure that our character is set down the right path, so that our students might follow our lead, and all of humanity benefit.

We as a species spend a lot of time, write more books speculating on this topic than money we use to bail out failed firms.

I spent years chasing down this subject and thought there was an answer. The answers that were given turned hollow after a while so the quest started again.

After a while it gets exhausting looking for the pot o gold at the end of the rainbow because every time you get close it disappears, the rainbow that is.

Meanwhile you start wondering if your life wouldn't have been better spent enjoying life.

We only have one and we never know how much time we have.

Knowing what I know now, I may or may not have proceeded on this quest. I learned a lot about myself and others. Will it be of any use? Who knows.

Albert Einstein liked the harmony and order of life, physics and his concept of divinity. He was no fool.

I wonder if he knew about black holes when he was alive. Apparently black holes do not follow the harmony and order of physics and life. A black hole consumes everything in its path and nothing exists. We do not know one hundred percent for sure as we have never been close to one. I for one don't care to be.

Even geniuses can not be sure why we are here and I am far from a genius.

Me thinks that if geniuses can't figure it out, scientists and religious people are in total disagreement, who am I to wonder?

I think I will enjoy the time I have left and not worry about why I am here.

I like Albert Einstein, I really do. I think mainly because he was brilliant and quirky and becaus

I like Albert Einstein, I really do. I think mainly because he was brilliant and quirky and because he had a unique position on faith. I love that he thought for himself (well duh, as his discoveries show). But he had a real contempt for authority, which led him to question received wisdom. Question everything - I like that!!

Yes, I especially like he was slow to develop verbally. Our youngest has struggles in this realm. Einstein thought that his challenges "... allowed him to observe with wonder the everyday phenomena that others took for granted."

With Jacob's language and learning issues (which I will write about in another place and link from here.) I am inspired and filled with hope for my him, who by everyone's estimation is delayed academically stemming from the "limitations" doctors have recently identified.

But there's no limit to life, when your imagination and mind are vivid and developing. This gives me hope.

As a child Einstein "was so fervent that, on his own he composed hymns, which he sang to himself as he walked home from school." Lovely! We like to compose music in our household!

At age 12, just as he would have been readying for his bar mitzvah, Einstein suddenly gave up Judaism which he had practiced on his own (as his parents rejected the Jewish traditions.) As he later put it,

"The religious inclination lies in the dim consciousness that dwells in humans that all nature, including the humans in it, is in no way an accidental game, but a work of lawfulness, that there is a fundamental cause of all existence."

Einstein did retain from his childhood religious experiences a profound faith in, and reverence for the harmony and beauty of the mind of God expressed in the creation of the universe. In his 50s, Einstein rethought his faith, as he did many times over his lifetime, based on what he called the "spirit manifest in the laws of the universe" and a sincere belief in a "God who reveals Himself in the harmony of all that exists."

Do you believe in God he was asked at that time?

"I'm not an atheist. I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws."

"The most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle. To sense that behind anything that can be experienced there is something that our minds cannot grasp, whose beauty and sublimity reaches us only indirectly: this is religiousness. In this sense, and in this sense only, I am a devoutly religious man."

Do you accept the historical existence of Jesus?

"Unquestionably! No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life."

I just love how he thought, how he "worked" at his faith, how he was impressed by the lavishness of the Creator and of the person of Jesus Christ.

And I love this: "... the most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mysterious..." I am in so much agreement! And it is Einstein's words that were the inspiration for the name of this blog and that echo my own heart as to the mystery of faith, belief or disbelief, science and much of life.

If you're interested in subscribing to this blog, you will get periodic notices. I can't say how often and my musings are quite random and tend to depend greatly on the family schedule. Thank you for reading and please, leave a comment or opinion!!! I'd love to hear from you.

Quotations all come from a TIME.com article on Albert Einstein's life, so if you'd like to simply read the complete article it is here.

As trickles of information are unveiling themselves to the World, due to the Ebonics of the Economy,

As trickles of information are unveiling themselves to the World, due to the Ebonics of the Economy, a “new power” is emerging.

Over this weekend we have seen where our own money, hard earned, honest living money actually was not ours to begin with. (Are you serious?!) Though we worked however many hours to accumulate it and put it into a 401k, IRA, or some sort of investment, over a period of time – all of it is lost, gone, history.

All that money you've lost — where did it go? By Eric Carve http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081011/ap_on_bi_ge/where_s_the_money

I know right now, for a fact, a number of people who have had to go into assisted living or whatever, had to have no money anywhere accumulated in order to have government aid. Now, those who are teetering on assisted living, but draw pensions or social security, invested into Wall Street to “secure” funds to live out their remaining days at home, have now lost everything. Just how pissed off do you think they are? (Is this why companies started to do away with pensions so many years ago now?)

Better question: This is why we drag our butts out of bed every day to work so that paycheck really is not ours? Officially, the answer is “YES”. Finally, we have confirmation that living paycheck to paycheck, rising prices and everything everywhere that we “need” has been for -well-shit.

There is actual confirmation now that these banks and places that demand you have collateral for a loan, do not even have the collateral themselves. How messed up is that? Think about it – I want you to open your eyes and ears and really understand what you are being told.

Bankruptcy financing gets pricier and more elusive By Caroline Humer http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_financial_restructuring

We all understand that we are being told that we need to “restructure” our economy and banking regulations. First of all, go back and look at the quotes that are in this blog. All of them are related to the events still leading up to the grand unveiling of this “new power”. (Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Albert Einstein, etc. etc.) Exactly how and WHO will be restructuring this economy or the Worlds economy?

If I am going to work for the mere and utter pleasure of jollies to the fat cats on Wall Street – I say kiss my ass. I do not want to spend my life in a cube at work, and continuously repeat the mundane crap, day in and day out. (I am so tired of hearing "I didn't know - blah, blah, blah".) Then be told everything that is earned, respectfully, is nothing at all. Seems like everything I have been saying is true – just paper. Ah – J

“Bineinteles!”, i-a raspuns profesorul.
In sfarsit, studentul il intreba pe profesor: “Domnule profesor, exista raul absolut?”
On this day in 1942,

October 11, 1942

United States defeats Japanese in the Battle of Cape Esperance

On this day in 1942, the American Navy intercepts a Japanese fleet of ships on their way to reinforce troops at Guadalcanal. The Navy succeeded in its operation, sinking a majority of the ships.

The battle for Guadalcanal began in August, when the Marines landed in the first American offensive of the war. The ground fighting saw U.S. troops gain a decisive edge, wiping out detachments and regiments in brutal combat. The most effective Japanese counterstrikes came from the air and sea, with bombing raids harassing the Marines and threatening their dwindling supplies. But before the Japanese could reinforce their own ground troops, the Navy went to work.

The battle of Cape Esperance, on the northwest coast of Guadalcanal Island, commenced at night between surface ships; all Japanese reinforcements came at night, an operation nicknamed the Tokyo Express. The Navy sank one Japanese cruiser, the Furutaka, and three destroyers, while losing only one of their own destroyers. In characteristic fashion, those Japanese sailors who found themselves floundering in the water refused rescue by Americans; they preferred to be devoured by the sharks as a fate less shameful than capture.

Unfortunately, the loss of American manpower was greater than that of hardware: 48 sailors from the American destroyer Duncan were the victims of crossfire between the belligerents, and more than a hundred others died when an American cruiser turned on a searchlight to better target a Japanese ship. It also had the unintended effect of illuminating the sailors of the cruiser, making them easy targets.

The American Navy continued to harass Japanese ships trying to reinforce the Japanese position on the island; relatively few Japanese troops made it ashore. By the end of 1942, the Japanese were ready to evacuate the island--in defeat.

F. D. Roosevelt

Sir;

Some recent work by E. Fermi and L Szilard, which has been communicated to me in manuscript, leads me to expect that the element uranium may be turned into a new and important source of energy in the immediate future. Certain aspects of the situation which has arisen seem to call for watchfulness and, if necessary, quick action on the part of the Administration. I believe therefore that it is my duty to bring to your attention the following facts and recommendations.

In the course of the last four months it has been made probable- through the work of Loiot in France as well as Fermi and Szilard in America-that it may become possible to set up a nuclear chain reaction in a large mass of uranium, by which vast amounts of power and large quantities of new radium-like elements would be generated. Now it appears almost certain that this could be achieved in the immediate future.

This new phenomenon would also lead to the construction of bombs, and it is conceivable-though much less certain-that extremely powerful bombs of a new type may thus be constructed. A single bomb of this type, carried by boat and exploded in a port, might very well destroy the whole port together with some of the surrounding territory. However, such bombs might very well prove to be too heavy for transportation by air.

The United States has only very poor ores of uranium in moderate quantities. There is some good ore in Canada and the former Czechoslovakia, while the most important source of uranium is the Belgian Congo.

In view of this situation you may think it desirable to have some permanent contact maintained between the Administration and the group of physicists working on chain reactions in America. One possible way of achieving this might be for you to entrust with this task a person who has your confidence who could perhaps serve in an unofficial capacity. His task might comprise the following:

a) to approach Government Department, keep them informed of the further development, and put forward recommendations for Government actions, giving particular attention to the problems of securing a supply of uranium ore for the United States.

b) to speed up the experimental work, which is at present being carried on within the limits of the budgets of University laboratories, by providing funds, if such funds be required, through his contacts with private persons who are willing to make contributions for this cause, and perhaps also by obtaining the co-operation of industrial laboratories which have the necessary equipment.

I understand that Germany has actually stopped the sale of uranium from the Czechoslovakian mines which she has taken over. That she should have taken such an early action might perhaps be understood on the ground that the son of the German Under- Secretary of State, von Weizacker, is attached to the Kaiser- Wilhelm-Institut in Berlin where some of the American work on uranium is now being repeated.

Your very truly, (signed) A. Einstein

Alister McGrath is Professor of Theology, Ministry and Education at King’s College, London, and head of its Centre for Theology, Religion and Ethics. Before this, he was Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University. His recent books include The Open Secret: A New Vision for Natural Theology, as well as a series of widely used theological textbooks. His first degrees were in the natural sciences. He will deliver the 2009 Gifford Lectures at the University of Aberdeen.

Natural theology seems to have got itself beached. Certainly, that seems to be the case within Protestantism. The onslaught on natural theology launched by Karl Barth has led many to draw the conclusion that it’s a waste of time, serving no useful purpose. Barth’s influence is such that many Protestants harbour the suspicion that natural theology is heretical. As if that wasn’t enough, those who think the idea is retrievable tend to understand natural theology primarily in terms of arguments for God’s existence. This appeal to pure reason plays down any empirical engagement with the natural world of the kind that so fascinates the natural scientists.

But is this about to change? The last few years have seen a surge of writings from natural scientists, arguing that their disciplines raise the classic questions of natural theology. The new excitement about the religious implications of anthropic phenomena in cosmology and convergent evolution in biology have sparked off fresh interest in the field. The natural sciences seem to be raising questions that they can’t answer, leading to renewed interest in classic approaches to natural theology. Back in the late seventeenth century, John Ray (1627-1705) and William Derham (1657-1735) argued that Roger Bacon laid the groundwork for a form of natural theology that went beyond rational arguments for God’s existence, and appealed to the observation and interpretation of nature itself. These ideas are now regaining a hearing, catalysed both by the interest of so many natural scientists in metaphysical and religious questions on the one hand, and dissatisfaction with the forms of natural theology that seemed to have gained the ascendancy in some quarters on the other.

These new forms of natural theology aren’t talking about “proving” God’s existence. They exhibit the proper caution of the sciences, preferring to speak instead in terms of God as the “inference to the best explanation” of what is observed, or the “consonance” or “resonance” between Christian theory and scientific observation. Inference is the order of the day, not deduction. Interest in “inference to the best explanation” is growing within the philosophy of science, stimulated by the later Peter Lipton’s excellent book on the topic. If this is the characteristic philosophy of the natural sciences, as Lipton argues, does not this open up new ways of thinking about natural theology?

It’s a fascinating thought. Yet what is really important is the growing belief that natural theology could become an important area of interconnection and dialogue between the natural theology and the natural sciences. This is miles away from the much-derided approach of William Paley, and has little, if any, connection with the discredited “God of the gaps” approach. Instead of arguing that God has to be invoked to deal with explanatory gaps in the natural sciences, this approach argues that the ability of the sciences to explain reality itself requires explanation. As Albert Einstein pointed out back in the 1930s, the explicability of the universe seems inexplicable. A “big picture” explanation of things is required, which takes into account the capacity of the human mind to make sense of things, as well as the complex ordering observed within the universe itself.

Yet this approach, while avoiding the problems of styles of natural theology based on deductive reason, still emphasizes the importance of making sense of things. The issue is how to identify the best explanation of what is observed in the natural world. So does this mean that natural theology is restricted to the quest for truth? What of the greater vision of the human engagement with reality encapsulated in the famous “Platonic triad” of truth, beauty and goodness?

This is not an idle question. The psychology of human perception holds that human beings interact with the world at three different levels. This involves our thinking about (or “knowing”), affective responding to, and enactive interaction with the world. The three aspects of the natural world that particularly resonate with these three aspects of perception are truth, beauty, and goodness respectively. They also resonate with the subject matter of core philosophical areas of enquiry: metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics. Given this insight from the natural sciences into the nature of human perception, should not natural theology be expanded from pure sense-making? This would also allow natural theology to be place of dialogue and interconnection between theology, the natural sciences, arts and literature.

This is the approach I explore in The Open Secret. The book aims to set a new agenda for natural theology, partly by locating natural theology against the backdrop of the continuing human interest in the notion of the “transcendent”. Yet it also emphasizes the importance of seeing the natural world in a certain way. Natural theology, it is argued, arises from within the Christian tradition, and is the way of seeing nature that is made possible by a Trinitarian vision of God. The approach blocks the standard Barthian objection to natural theology by proposing that natural theology is generated and informed by the Christian theological framework (an idea developed by Thomas F. Torrance, who insisted that Barth approved of his transmutation of the notion). On this approach, natural theology is not limited to the making sense of things, but to a deep moral and aesthetic engagement with the natural world. In particular, it allows us to cope with the moral and aesthetic variegation of nature, which William Paley and others preferred to overlook.

Natural theology is clearly making a comeback. Nobody can be sure what it will look like in the future. But there is every indication that it is assuming new and more satisfying forms, with the potential to generate and sustain some important and productive dialogues.
