I just found this post on Urania, one of my favorite blogs for finding astro software bug fixes and hearing about updates. This post just happens to be on my new pet topic: Things Leopard Ain't Doing Right And Thereby Wasting My Time And Money. I encourage you to read the whole post but my summary is that if you want to use DS9 while running Leopard, you have to set your firewall settings to "Allow all incoming connections" and not "Set access for specific services and applications" because Leopard takes it upon itself to digitally sign all applications. DS9 doesn't like this one bit and the signature ends up completely corrupting the program.

The only way to solve this if it happens to you is to change the firewall settings and reinstall DS9.

The money quote from the post:

MacOS X shouldn’t assume its OK to change an application. In the case of SAOImage DS9, they are irreparably damaging the application without leaving you a way to avoid the damage once you trigger the application firewall.

....

Personally, I believe an application that fails its checksum should present a message indicating that is the problem instead of just crapping out, but in this case, the fault lies mostly with Apple. Apple is damaging applications by making this critical decision in the background, without user intervention!

Munster had expected Apple to announce a flurry of deals with overseas carriers, but not this fast. "The iPhone's international rollout," he writes, "is about 8 months ahead of our original schedule."

Assuming that the device maintains its current 3% market penetration, the recent announcements give Munster "increased confidence" that Apple will meet his published sales target of 12.9 million iPhones in calendar year 2008.

Well they should, since 3% of 575 million is 17.25 million iPhones.

For 2009, Munster is sticking with his estimate of 45 million iPhones -- a target that represents the high end among mainstream Apple analysts. Apple achieves this, he says, by 1) adding China and Japan, for a total available market of 1.1 billion, 2) introducing a lower-cost iPhone in January '09, and 3) increasing its market penetration to 6%.

As for the current round of deals, Munster believes that most of them are non-exclusive, a change that he expects will have a positive impact on iPhone sales, a slight negative impact on iPhone revenue, but "no material" impact on Apple's (AAPL) published earnings.

Touting its ability to be easily customizable, and looking very much like a Treo with an iPhone touch surface, this phone concept deserves some attention.

Atención porque notaréis algunos cambios significativos en esta versión Alpha, por ejemplo descubriréis la navegación mediante pestañas, lo que os hará optimizar mucho mejor la gestión de vuestras diferentes cuentas de correo. Para los usuarios de MacOs X hay muchas mejoras interesantes, por ejemplo que la aplicación será nativa ya que está hecha en Cocoa, lo cual se supone hará que tenga un mayor rendimiento en nestros Leopardos. Además se integrará con nuestra Agenda, lo cual es algo que a mí me va a ahorrar trabajo y problemas, porque esto de que las cosas se sincronicen y acoplen fácil es una gran solución para sacar algo en claro de la maraña de información que siempre tengo desperdigada en un sitio o en otro. y muchas otras mejoras de rendimiento.

Aún así podéis haceros una mejor idea probándola, aunque aún le queda camino que recorrer a este Thunderbird 3 ;)

que por 600€, 600 menos que el macbook me ofrece casi el mismo hardware que no software por desgracia trae el vomitivo Windows Vista, aunque yo ya me he apresurado a instalarle el Ubuntu, de todos modos el que escribe lo hace desde Vista para ir acostumbrandome, por ahora no me quejo de la compra estoy muy satisfecho y espero que con el tiempo me pueda pillar un macbook aunque eso si primero tengo que amortizar este.

De fuentes muy confiables de Mundo Mac nos ha llegado la información de que exactamente en mes y medio, Apple lanzará la iTunes Store en México. Y no solo eso, servicio de rentas de películas, iPhone y servicio de impresión de álbumes, calendarios y mas en iPhoto.

No podemos revelar la fuente, pero no es ningún diario ni analista, la fuente viene directamente del Call Center en Miami y las oficinas de Apple México.

Todo esto surge debido a que la empresa de Cupertino quiere seguir entrando a toda maquina en territorio mexicano y nos revelan que plantean ofrecer todos los servicios que actualmente solo están disponibles en Estados Unidos y algunos países de Europa.

Además en un mes y medio caerá el mes de Junio y todo comienza a tomar sentido.

Recordemos que Apple tiene planes de abrir un Apple Retail Store en Monterrey para 60 días a partir del anuncio; que casualmente cae en Junio. Según diarios mexicanos el iPhone se lanzará a la mano de Telcel, también en Junio. Y por último, nuestra fuente nos revela la iTunes Store, impresiones de iPhoto y más en un mes y medio; y por si fuera poco también cae en Junio.

Al parecer Junio será un mes muy interesante para los mexicanos.

If it is one thing Apple is known for, above all else, it is the design of Apple products. From the very beginning Apple has shown a different level of attention to design detail than many of its competitors, and throughout its history, the company has been a constant source of design innovation.

With that in mind, its very difficult to rank the Top 10 Apple designs of all time, and there is certainly no way to make everyone reading the list happy…BUT…that’s never stopped us before, and this time I have had a little help with feedback from Twitter followers…so let’s just get straight to it…

10. Power Mac G4 Cube

The 8×8x8 Power Mac G4 Cube was only around for a short time, but while it was here, it was a beautiful sight to behold.

09. Powerbook 100

Sometimes its the little things that count - and with the Powerbook 100, Apple introduced a small design innovation that completely changed notebook computers from that point forward. By pushing the keyboard up toward the screen and leaving the lower part of the laptop for the user to rest his/her palms, Apple changed the way notebook computers were designed. The nice, dark case, and innovative trackball brought the design to completion, making a stunning package for its time.

08. Macintosh

The first Macintosh deserves a spot on the list not only for its simple, sleek design, but also for the fact that this machine ushered in a little something we call “desktop publishing”. Not only did it have great looks on the outside, but the innovation on the inside brought a whole new way of designing to the world.

07. OSX

The look and feel of OSX has evolved over 5 generations of the software, but some of the amazing innovations in the look and feel of how one uses a computer are still being “borrowed” by Microsoft in their latest version of Windows. OSX is an elegant, easy to use operating system that has a sleek and sexy look at this unmatched to this day, which earns it a spot on our list.

06. Powerbook G4/Macbook

Sleek, straight lines. The Powerbook G4 debuted with a beautiful look that was simple and elegant. The design has remained with Apple’s Pro notebooks all the way up to the current model for a reason. This design gets it right. No bulky curves or obtrusive design elements. This is THE notebook computer design, and it will be very hard to top.

Although Gundotra refuses to comment on the details of particular software, he notes that development of web applications will continue in parallel, because these can be continually updated and improved without requiring a new download. "It's the best of both worlds," commments Gundotra.

The company may be most likely to create native versions of key web applications, such as Calendar and Docs, in order to give access to these without having to transfer data over a comparatively slow cellular connection.

This is the same purpose served by the only existing native iPhone application, Google Maps, which would otherwise have to fetch basic interface information in addition to map updates over a slow 2.5G EDGE receiver.

France Telecom's Orange said in a one-sentence statement that it will sell the handset in Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and African markets later this year.

France Telecom spokesman Bertrand Deronchaine said Orange will be the exclusive iPhone provider in Belgium and Romania, with co-exclusive or non-exclusive deals in other countries. He declined to offer more details about the arrangement.

Apple has so far struck exclusive deals for the iPhone with AT&T Inc. in the United States, O2 in Britain, T-Mobile in Germany and Orange in France

Sincronizzazione tramite ToMacs

Înţelegi de ce a evitat Vodafone să comercializeze iPhone în România? Pentru că nu se mai caută atât de mult. În urmă cu o săptămână, Vodafone a ales să aducă iPhone-ul pe nu mai puţin de 10 pieţe din întreaga lume, dar nu şi în a noastră ţărişoară. Acum, Orange a făcut o mişcare curajoasă, să vedem însă şi cât succes va avea.

Personal, prevăd un record la terminale iPhone vândute dacă Orange se decide să-l bage în oferta "Best Deal", la un preţ de până în 200 Euro (fără TVA). De asemenea, sunt curios dacă or să-l dea la liber, deblocat (tind să cred că nu, iar în caz contrar preţul va fi exagerat).

Să nu uităm că Apple pregăteşte o nouă versiune de iPhone, care va acoperi multe dintre lipsurile actualului telefon al companiei din Cupertino. Vorbesc despre 3G (cu siguranţă) şi, posibil, GPS. Plus opţiuni de personalizare mai multe.

Tu ce crezi, mai merită să îţi iei actualul iPhone, să aştepţi iPhone 2.0 sau nu te interesează acest terminal?

Pojawiają się 2 pytania:

• jak będzie wyglądała aktywacja ?
• iTunes Store / AppStore - czy będzie dostępne w Polsce?

Otwarcia sklepu z muzyka / filmami / serialami bym raczej się nie spodziewał ale AppStore Poland już tak. W zasadzie wystarczyłoby przetłumaczyć interfejs i tyle - same programy mogą być w języku angielskim przecież.

Jako posiadacz telefonu w Orange (z umową kończącą się w okolicach grudnia 08 / stycznia 09) zadaję sobie dodatkowe pytanie: jak bardzo stanieje iPhone do grudnia i ile Orange będzie chciało za abonament do tego telefonu. Na pewno nie będą to niestety małe pieniądze.

Jeszcze w tym roku zadebiutuje u jednego z operatorów, nie boję się tu użyć nazwy Orange, iPhone.

Na iPhone'a czekałem od czasu jego premiery w USA. Może ktoś powie to naprawdę przepłacony telefon, a na rynku jest wiele lepszych, bardziej zaawansowanych modeli. Jednak uważam że to zła propaganda jest.

Każdy kto kiedyś zakochał się w Apple będzie chciał mieć iPhona.

Pamiętam jak kiedyś zobaczyłem iPoda II generacji i oniemiałem. Sam miałem iPoda Nano (I generacji), potem w komisie w Reading w Anglii kupiłem  iPoda III generacji, a na samym końcu na lotnisku Stansted koło Londka Zdrój, kupiłem nowego pięknego i błyszczącego iPoda Video. Noszę go zawsze przy sobie i wiernie mi służy. :)

iPhona też sobie kupię, a co niech inni widzą że jestem na fali. :)

Ampliar la memoria al iMac es un proceso muy sencillo. Por supuesto, lo primero es comprar la memoria, pero antes de nada, debes saber qué tipo de módulos necesitas. En el caso del iMac aluminio de mediados del 2007, lleva módulos SO-DIMM con las siguientes características:

El iMac tiene 2 ranuras para memoria y si no has cambiado la configuración de fábrica, vendrá con un módulo de 1Gb en una ranura, mientras que la otra está libre. Por tanto, puedes comprar otro de 1 ó 2 Gb con lo que tendrías 2 ó 3 Gb respectivamente, o bien comprar 2 módulos de 2 Gb para hacer un total de 4Gb. En este último caso, deberás reemplazar la memoria que te venía con el ordenador.

Como has podido leer, no es necesario que los módulos de memoria sean iguales, por lo que cualquier combinación es válida teniendo en cuenta que el máximo que pueden usar los iMac son 4Gb.

Instalando la memoria

Nos ponemos mano a la obra. Los zócalos para ampliar la memoria en el iMac están en la parte inferior de la pantalla, justo debajo del logo de Apple, en una posición no muy cómoda de manipular si el Mac está en la mesa. Por mucho que rotes la pantalla, no se queda en una posición cómoda para abrirlo.

Inicialmente pensé en ponerlo encima de una cama para evitar que se rayara la pantalla, pero luego pensé que era mejor acercarlo todo lo posible al borde de la mesa y trabajar desde abajo, casi como si estuvieras cambiando el aceite del coche :-)

Ahora necesitamos un destornillador de estrella y vamos quitando el tornillo que por cierto,  lleva un sistema que impide que se separe de la plaquita metálica que está sujetando, así que por más vueltas que des, no se soltará de la placa.  

Cuando hayas aflojado lo suficiente, tira de la plaquita con cuidado hacia abajo y quedarán a la vista los 2 zócalos de memoria. Verás que el de la izquierda tiene un módulo instalado y el otro está vacío. 

También verás 2 lengüetas de plástico que debes sacar para quitar el módulo instalado o para poner uno nuevo en el zócalo vacío:

Si sólo vas a instalar un módulo de memoria, instálalo en la ranura de la derecha. Asegúrate que está en la posición correcta (con los chips de memoria hacia ti) y ponlo por detrás de la lengüeta de plástico tal y como se ve en la foto anterior. Presiona con despacio y con fuerza hasta que notes que está encajado en la posición correcta.

Si la ampliación requiere que saques el otro módulo, basta tirar con cuidado de la lengüeta de plástico hasta que la memoria sobresalga un poco. Retírala con la mano y la sustituyes por el otro módulo que al igual que antes, debes apretar con cuidado pero con firmeza. 

Vuelve a poner las lengüetas, coloca la chapita en su lugar y vuelve a conectar el Mac a todos los periféricos. Lo conectas y a correr!!

Información para otros modelos de iMac

En el caso de que seas un afortunado poseedor de un iMac de Abril de 2008, la memoria debe ser PC2-6400 a 800MHZ con las características que indica Apple.

Si tu iMac es un Intel de los blanquitos de principios de 2006, puedes encontrar el tipo de memoria que necesitas así como las instrucciones para ampliar la memoria en la web de Apple.

Si es del modelo de finales del 2006, también podrás ver aquí el tipo de memoria que necesitas.

sono dati in pasto agli hacker. Che riesce a violarli si porta a casa 10000$. L'hacker è infine tenuto a non rivelevare le modalità dell'attacco.

Bene. Il MacBookAir è stato violato in 2 minuti da Charlie Miller, con tanti saluti alla presunta sicurezza offerta da casa Apple. Il laptop con Vista a bordo ha richiesto due giorni di lavoro e l'aiuto di un collaboratore: alla fine Shane Macaulay e Derek Callaway hanno bucato il sistema che, aggiornato al service pack 1, si è rivelato più ostico del previsto. L'unico rimasto è il laptop con Linux. Ma non perché a prova di hacker. Sono invece stati diversi i bug rinvenuti nel sistema, solo che nessuno si è voluto cimentare a scrivere codice per attaccare la LinuxBox.

Fatta l'ovvia premessa che non è dagli hacker che ci dobbiamo guardare ( che, ricordiamolo, non sono pirati informatici ) viene comunque il dubbio che forse la sicurezza oggi è offerta più che dagli sviluppatori dalla solidarietà di chi attacca. A patto che abbiate Linux!
