So ging es dann also los.

Typisch. Jetzt also weiter mit Pokerstars.

Mal gucken, was kommt :D

Laziness let me grow my facial hair beyond the 4 day mark this week, which puts me out of range for my electric razor. This necessitated using my girlfriends leg razor to ensure I don't end up being mistaken for a bearded hipster. My girlfriends razors have two blades, which many would argue is wholly inadequate in today's world (and yet, the two blade replacements are surprisingly easy to find) given the recent explosion in the number of razor blades required to shave the modern face. Onwards I shaved, cursing both of those two dull blades with all my cursin' powers (full curse power / 2 blades = half curse power per blade).

How did we get here you ask? It was a slow, painful, nick-filled road I tell you.

Where will we go from here? Who knows? As someone who looks at graphs now and then, I can tell you without a doubt, that the trend is up. This is of course, barring another blade supply collapse such as that seen in 1747 (not pictured above). I for one, welcome our 6 and 7 bladed overlords.

Until such time as we truly evolve and develop a 10 bladed razor, I will continue to use my electric.

The latest jaunt from the Marvel universe is certainly a well built affair. It features a good comb

The latest jaunt from the Marvel universe is certainly a well built affair. It features a good combination of action and yakking and contains some very strong performances - not least from it's leads, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. The script is a step above the norm with a central character that does not suffer from a case of the 'overly righteous' bug that seems to infect these people. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Iron Man is definitely one of the better Marvel efforts (i.e. a lot closer to Blade than Spiderman 3)... only problem is that for two hours I was bored to tears.

Insanely bored.

Chairman of the Bored.

Everyone around me was having fun and enjoying the movie, I was thinking about how weird my trainers looked at a certain angle - I can't explain it. The film certainly has it's weak points and I definitely don't like the way it pandered to my liberal hypocrisies in booing militarism whilst applauding a man in a metal suit beating the crap out of people (we all know superheroes should be right-wingers and not finger waggers), but none of that has stopped me from enjoying this sort of film before.

Maybe it's because the variety of superhero origin movies is actually quite limited, we all know that with great power comes great yadda yadda yadda and so on. Maybe it's because following the excellent Batman Begins makes the others just look a bit second rate. Maybe the time afforded to story development in Heroes has ruined all this?

I really wanted to like this film and I can see why everyone else (and I mean everyone) did and, like E.T., I know that Iron Man is a good film, I just couldn't care less about it.

5/10

Abschließend bleibt also zu sagen: Es läuft großartig!

Members of The Iowa Utilities Board voted 2-1 in favor of Alliant Energy's plan to build a 630-megawatt coal plant in Marshalltown.

May 8, 2008

By Tammy R. Lawson

MC Sun Staff Writer

For three hours, you could have heard a pin drop anywhere in the room.

Fate lay in the hands of the Iowa Utilities Board, which after much deliberation on everything from greenhouse gasses to economic growth, was sealed in a 2-1 favored victory for Interstate Power and Light Company (a subsidiary of Alliant Energy) to proceed with construction of its 630-megawatt coal/biomass plant in Marshalltown.

But unlike corn stalks the facility would burn, the April 30th decision wasn't as cut and dried.

Board Chairman John Norris attached stipulations to the approved permit:

*Five percent of the plant’s electric generation must be derived from biomass within two years and 10 percent stemming from biomass within five years;

*Alliant must generate 10 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2013 (the projected start of service) and another 25 percent from renewable sources by 2028;

*If regulations are passed by Congress for the capture of carbon dioxide emissions, Alliant would be totally responsible for those emission costs without executing rate increases.

"I do think it would be a wise decision to wait a couple of years and see what strides have been made in carbon capturing," Norris said. "But in looking at the big picture, I don't know if all that much will change during that time."

Board member Darrell Hanson, who voted against granting the certificate, had reservations. "I think the company may have aimed unrealistically high in assuming the cost alternatives for carbon constraints. We could approve this, but what happens if we're wrong? You have to look at the risks and the consequences. It's a matter of, which risk are we willing to take?"

"I think these conditions are reasonable," said Board member Krista Tanner. "I also think as far as renewable energy goes, this application satisfies that."

Norris added that the stipulations would reduce the burden of higher rates. "Consumers do have a lot of financial risk here, and this will add generation for the company's customer base to support reliability, while providing continued incentive for wind/renewable energy-not only at this plant, but throughout the entire fleet in Iowa."

IPL President Tom Aller said it was understandable for the regulatory body to add what ever conditions they wanted to the decision. "They represent our customers and the people of our state, so that's what their job is. We take no issue whatsoever with the board wanting to condition the first part of this case."

Mayor Gene Beach, also in attendance, was satisfied. "I believe that this is just the first step on many good announcements to come as a result of IPL selecting Marshalltown as its site for the most efficient plant in the Midwest."

The following day, Beach received a phone call from Newton Mayor Chaz Allen, who's city is constructing a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine facility, congratulating Marshalltown on its accomplishment.

"We discussed how the proposed plant will benefit all of us with jobs during construction, as well as the generation fees that will be coming in once generation starts," Beach said. "We also discussed how the new TPI blade plant in Newton will fit nicely with Alliant's wind generation plans...this means a great deal for the city, the area, and the state."

But while the celebrating commenced for some, disappointment ensued for others, bringing the old saying "it ain't over 'til it's over" into play.

Speculation is high that Plains Justice attorneys Carrie La Seur and Jana Linderman, who represented five environmental organizations opposing the plant during January's IUB hearing, may appeal the decision and block the necessary air quality permit from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources which is due by September, and contingent upon the final written decision expected in a few weeks.

"We believe that we prevailed on most factual issues and are very disappointed that the IUB didn't rule in our favor," La Seur said. "We are pleased with the Board's recognition of its obligation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, we remain concerned with the negative environmental impacts of this plant, and it is far from clear that this ruling will do anything to meaningfully reduce [those] emissions all the members identified as a problem."

Linderman added, "While we had asked that the Board deny the certificate, their approval is subject to a number of major conditions, and we will have to review the final written order carefully before making a firm decision how to respond."

Denison native Jim Hansen, head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, also testified in January and was equally disappointed with the vote. "The decision makes no sense for the people of Iowa and the creatures of the planet. It especially short changes our children and grandchildren for the short term benefit of a small number of special interests who benefit by the burning of a cheap, dirty fuel."

He continued, "Coal serves the interest of only a handful of oligarchs, but our officials are letting these special interests ride roughshod over the public, our planet, and creation. This is a case of cutting the baby in half-a dastardly deed. Somebody had better object real soon."

Until the DNR decision is handed down on air quality, plant supporters like local Alliant representative Kenn Vinson are basking in the after-vote, for now. "An extremely big hurdle has been cleared."

The time is really getting close now. An expected vote out turned out to be a game of gamble, never thought it could be twisted in that way.

Continuing with the episode... :) This time roadies crossed the border and reached Malaysia (think no more roaming around after this). Everybody was so excited (although I am still wondering the why !! ) crossing the border on foot. Then they reached their hotel by floating on the see (obviously a boat was there as a source of transportation). :).

The next day they met Ranvijay near a sea shore, where lots of water sports were happening. So, it was pretty obvious that the money task would be somewhat related to that only. Ranvijay pointed their sight towards a professional doing a wave boarding, flipping.. Easier looking then actual implementation...everyone was given 4-5 chances to perform the task. The more time they would be able to board, the more money they would earn. Everyone tried their hands and feet on the sport but nobody was able to do it. 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec.. was the count.... except Prabhjot and Ankita who were able to balance themselves on the board for a longer time(somehow). One thing I did not understand, nobody was competent enough to do the task, but when it came to critiizing others, the big mouth opened to the fullest. 13 evens out of 25 tries... They managed to cross 2 lacs mark this time. (is it that the producers increased the stake ? ;) )

Second task (which was neither an immunity task nor an advantage task), was quite challenging and scary. The task was "win a Karizma" task. Only 1 Karizma this time, hmmn... Has the budget overshooted this time due to roadies going international, or is it due to the fact that, people left are not deserving enough to get 1 bike each... Whatever !!! the faces of roadie were to be seen at that time. On to the task. They were to lie down on a wooden plank and their hands would be tied with a rope, over the head so that they could not be seen. On the other side, a balde would be cutting the plank. So the roadies had to untie themselves before the axe reaches near their thighs. The quicker, the winner. Simple and in terms of Raghu "Fair enough" :). Nobody was able to do it, except Prabhjot and Ankita. The one who did it faster was Ankita (18 seconds). Well deserved !! Kudos...

No immunity task so no one was immune.

Then came the time of elimination. Ankita was given a chance to decide the roadie who could go home. She had to give her won bike to a roadie of her choice and that roadie would not drive ahead in the episode but would be driving back to India. Ankita played a big gamble here and did not agree to give her bike to anyone. Instead she opted for a normal vote out sequence.

One more twist, this time the voting happened for giving the power of elimination instead of elimination. The one with maximum number of votes would choose the one who would be going home. Vote outs started and Ashu won the power with total of 3 votes.

Finally, Ashu named Prabhjot as the eliminated. Sonel once again cried and hugged her..... (sobbbbbb)...

There's no doubt that Carlos Tevez is an exceptional footballer.

There's also no doubt that he's an exceptionally ugly little b*gger, but I'm struggling to work out whether I think he looks more like an extra from Blade, Taz or the Incredible Hulk.

Can anyone help?

UPDATE: For any Man Utd fans this is a Norwich City blog which has nothing to do with Manchester City (other than laughing at them occasionally), and so just to clear up a few points for you yes, I know you're better than us, yes I know Tevez is better than any of our players (with the possible exception of both Gary Doherty and Luke Chadwick, who are both class and incredibly attractive) and yes, I'll be sure to watch you play in the Champions League Final. Lighten up!

A nice variety of films start at the Mallard today. The big release of the week has to be Iron Man

A nice variety of films start at the Mallard today. The big release of the week has to be Iron Man which would just seem like the latest in a long line of slightly disappointing Marvel films (Blade being the one that the others have failed to live up to) were it not for the fact that it stars the superb Robert Downey Jr., is directed by Jon Favreau (Zathura) and written by John August (Go, Big Fish). In short the pedigree is great and I would be surprised if it was a bad film.

Made of Honour, on the other hand, looks pretty atrocious. It's about a bloke who is great friends with a woman and is asked to be her maid of honour when she gets married but he loves her yadda yadda yadda. One wonders how they think of all these great ideas.

Nim's Island is strictly for kids. It tells the story of a little girl who lives on Swiss Family Robinson style island with her father. When he goes missing she contacts the only person she knows who can help her, adventurer Alex Rover. Unfortunately, Alex is a fictional character created by agoraphobic author Alexandria Rover (Jodie Foster) who, despite her fear decides to do what she has only ever written about, albeit with the help of a mental manifestation of her creation. This looks like great stuff for kids. It's brightly coloured, and fun and there is even a hint of danger and a dash of Freud for those accompanying them.

Also showing are Fool's Gold, Horton Hears A Who!, The Eye and Forgetting Sarah Marshall (it seems that Three and Out is over and out after just one week).

Full screening info can be found on the 'Mallard Cinema' page.

The film which is in pre-production is set to complete by 2010 will be filmed alongside it's sequel still currently named "The Hobbit 2". Peter Jackson fans should not panic however since he will still have a hand in the film's creative process as executive producer. I would prefer Jackson to continue to direct the Tolkien films, but as a fan of Del Toro's work, I am interested to see where he goes with them as well.

It has been announced that del Toro is signed on as director for the Doctor Strange film also to be released in 2010.

Waxing vs. Shaving

Waxing or shaving? This is the question before us. As warm weather descends, thoughts turn naturally

Waxing or shaving? This is the question before us. As warm weather descends, thoughts turn naturally to summer. And what do thoughts of summer consist of? Beaches, bike riding walking in the park or at the shore. In all of these there is one common denominator. An increase of shorter, looser, and lighter clothing naturally exposes more skin, and (alas!) more body hair. In winter, one may get away with a little flexibility in the leg-shaving department, but spring is here, and all eyes will (hopefully!) be upon you.

So, now that the question of why and when to undertake hair removal has been resolved, let us now move on to our methods. For the purpose of this article, we will focus upon the hair removal involving the leg and bikini area.

Waxing is a process in which hot wax is prepared by melting down special wax for this exact purpose (found in most pharmacies), applying the wax to an area of the body containing unwanted body hair, covering said hot wax with a piece of gauze or cotton covering, and whisking the hair off the body by pulling it off with the gauze. Sounds simple enough, right? One wonders what all the fuss is about, when the process sounds so cut and dried. Let’s take a more objective look.

Many people feel uncomfortable with the idea of a stranger doing something as intimate as removing their body hair. A recent informal survey taken among people in their thirties showed that most people preferred that very little conversation take place during their waxing sessions. “Somehow, it’s easier when it’s impersonal”, one woman remarked. Another woman observed that being serviced by members of the opposite sex was slightly embarrassing, especially when removing the hair in the bikini area, or on the buttocks. One young man felt that waxing carried a stigma of femininity. However, he endured it, since he had never been properly taught to shave his own legs, and felt that his excessive body hair was unattractive. Interestingly, not many men will admit to having their legs waxed, while a conversation with a local salon owner shows that the opposite is true. “The guys love it the most”, he stated, adding that they were most appreciative, and much better tippers, according to his workers. “We have guys who make standing monthly appointments with specific waxers”, he reported, “They have their favorites, and work it so they get serviced when the place is quiet, like when school gets out at three.” “And,” he added, “It’s not just legs they’re getting waxed. Eyebrows, backs, even armpits and chest hair. It all goes, and they love it!” American women, on the other hand, have been raised in a culture which regards hair removal as a requirement for acceptance in society. If a woman does not remove her body hair, she is often looked upon as a social outcast. Women are taught from an early age to endure the pain and sting of eyebrow plucking as well as leg and biking shaving and waxing.

Shaving is a process in which a razor blade or an electric shaver is used to remove unwanted hair. While using a razor shaver, a cream is applied to the area first to moisturize the skin, and then the hair is removed by carefully applying pressure and gliding the razor over the hair to remove it from the skin. This is another process that sounds easy enough, though in practice, many people are taught from a young age, or as soon as the first hairs begin to sprout. The onset of adolescence brings with it not only responsibility and romance, but a renewed interest in personal hygiene. None of the people used in out informal poll admits to enjoying overly hairy partners. Leg shaving is a practice which requires skill, precision, and safety. Extreme care must be practiced in the removal of hair from the bikini area, as it is highly sensitive and easily irritated. The use of shaving cream or gel is highly recommended, as is a new razor or blade (if the blade is replaceable). Most people prefer to shave in the bathroom, either with one leg up on either the tub or toilet, or else in the shower, so that the hair is easily discarded down the drain. When shaving the bikini area, it is preferable to shave against the direction in which the hair is growing, giving a closer shave. It should be noted that, with the growth of new hair in the region, some itching may occur when short hairs or stubble appears. Either repeated shaving in these ‘faster growing’ areas, or else a little sprinkle of talcum powder will take care of this problem. Shaving, while giving one more control and privacy, is apt to be less precise than waxing, and is limited to only those areas which one can see and reach.

Whichever method you choose, be sure and practice safe hygiene with both razors in your home, and waxers in your neighborhood shop. Often, a salon will offer personal equipment, for a fee. Rarely will a professional allow a customer to furnish their own tools, but doesn’t have to be expensive to be sanitary. Disposable razors work just fine, and the purchase of a personal shaver might be made online, where one may compare prices. Waxes tend to keep your legs hairless for longer, since the root of the hair follicle is removed with the waxing method, but for many, the sacrifice of their modesty is too great to negotiate.

Zha's been tuning Spirit's database and code, and it is really starting to show. I pushed Spirit pretty hard - we now have 8500 prims in various configurations, and a couple of scripts running (I got my flame, thank you to Script Wizard Dale). I only managed to slap Spirit to its knees a couple of times, which considering that OpenSim is very alpha code, I thought showed a remarkable amount of resilience.

I'm increasingly finding that other than missing things like my HUD, AO, hair, and oddly enough, my gorgeous sculpted and scripted riding horse, I really do prefer to spend my time in Spirit. To all intents and purposes, I have no prim limits, the Blade server that Spirit is hosted on is increasingly showing how robust it is, and I can get things in and out of inventory far more easily than I'm used to. There are still issues with the alpha code, of course, but overall, the performance Spirit is turning in is just getting better and better. I want Shengri La proper hosted on a Blade server!

My sense, based on nothing more than building hard in both platforms, is that OpenSim is growing up. The technology is really digging in and starting to work, so I can get on about my business of designing. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the new week brings. I have hopes of a mist script, and some foxfire scripts, and of course, one mustn't forget, some texture animation scripts and my fondest hope: a butterfly movement script...

This weekend, I spent planting the main build with all sorts of plants and flowers. I got the initial trusses in place on the nascent roof - I'm still not entirely certain how I want to finish the pitches yet, and I have only a dim idea of the direction I'm heading with the corner turn, but building is always a process for me anyway, so this doesn't disturb me (too much).

I did get the planters full of plants - a bed of gentians, some conifers plantings, palms underplanted with a lush bed of grasses waving gently in the breeze.

I also started adding seating, against the day I get sit poses and the like. Eventually, I'll be adding all sorts of little touches to the seating arrangements - tables, floor lighting and the like. Right now, I'm pretty content with my candle (note the flame) with the actual prim wax drips. Not to mention the prim ice cubes in the glasses of lemonade...

A nice touch was adding the suspension chains to the chandeliers. They are no longer merely suspended in midair, but attached to the new support trusses.

I also started building out a large community center. The foundation is laid and I have a clear direction I want to take for terraforming. The rest will evolve, just like OpenSim is.

Spirit is becoming heart-stoppingly beautiful. In some respects, it's a pity that it truly is a 'walled garden', in that only people on the A++++ list can visit me there. For now, that is.

He's killed vampires, fought Sylvester Stallone, ran from Tommy Lee Jones, etc. etc.

This stint in jail won't hurt his career one bit. I predict we finally see all his films getting the logical sequel treatment: "in jail." It worked for Ernest, so it has to work for Snipes.

Think about it. Now we'll finally get "Blade 4: Night Watch," "White Men Can't Jump (in Prison)," and of course the prequel to "Demolition Man."

2008 will be the year of the Snipes. Hang on folks, it's gonna be a wild ride.

This past week 45 year old actor Wesley Snipes was convicted to spend 36 months in prison for federal tax evasion.

Since 1999, Snipes has earned a staggering 38 million dollars and has paid somewhere between zero to no dollars in taxes. Tonight the Associated Press has learned of a shocking twist--that just 12 hours after hearing his fate in the courtroom, Snipes’ legal team announced that the actor will be filing for a one year prison sentence extension.

According to Snipes' lawyer, the actor will be filing for a prison term extension to ensure he serves his sentence completely and accurately. Immediately after Thursday’s court appearance, Snipes began completing paperwork necessary for the sentence extension.

Three misdemeanor charges against Snipes brought the maximum possible sentence to 3 years in jail. The final punishment could have been more lenient, but the judge gave Snipes the maximum penalty to send a message to any future perpetrators. The judge also gave Snipes the full sentence because he is black.

"There are only two things that are certain in this world--death and taxes,” quoted U.S District Judge William Terrell Hodges. “In his lifetime, Wesley Snipes has already administered plenty of death; especially to vampires. However, Mr. Snipes now realizes that he must also pay taxes.”
According to Florida law, living as an immortal day-walker does not constitute criminal charges of cheating death. An IRS spokesperson also added that “whether or not someone cheats death is not our concern. But if you rake in a million dollars for cross-dressing with Patrick Swayze, we’d better know about it.”

Close friends of Snipes were shocked upon hearing about the criminal charges and sentencing. An anonymous mother of Snipes commented, "How's he supposed to file taxes when he ain't worked in 3 years?"

Even if Snipes did file recent taxes, there would certainly be speculation over how 38 million dollars were made from 3 vampire movies with weak plot devices and bad lighting.

The typical length of a prison term extension is zero years considering nobody has ever filed one before.

This unprecedented case also marks the first time in Florida history in which a black man will serve time for a white collar crime. [Editor’s note: Michael Vick was sentenced for a primarily Mexican-themed crime.] Thirty six months, however, may not be enough time for Snipes to complete his sentence. Snipes added, "You know there's lots of stuff to do in prison. There’s boxing tournaments, lifting weights, boxing, kickboxing, escaping, fighting, boxing, and laundry. By getting a prison extension, I can be sure to serve my full sentence and not be penalized. Plus I think it’s a tax write-off but I’m not sure how that stuff works.”

The judge also ruled that he does not have to go to prison immediately but must surrender to custody at a later date. Before turning himself in to jail, Snipes plans on visiting the Grove City, PA outlet mall, at which patrons enjoy year-round bargains without paying any sales tax.

Phone calls to Snipes’ personal accountant were not returned due to his death 18 years ago.

I hope Wesley Snipes takes some of those sweet moves to jail with him! He might need them since Mr. Snipes was sentenced to three year in prison today for... Tax Fraud!? Why would he even evade that? Like he couldn't pay them anyway.. didn't Blade do really well? I mean, I like it...
Anyway, The official story is:

In February, a federal jury convicted Snipes on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file a tax return. Jurors acquitted Snipes of felony tax fraud and conspiracy charges that carry more significant punishment upon conviction.

Had he been found guilty of all charges filed against him, Snipes could have faced up to 16 years in prison, according to NBC news.

This whole story is pretty interesting and I'd definitely recommend you taking a few minutes to give it a read..

I'm sure he'll be okay in prison though, I mean...he's fought off hordes of vampires and creepy mutated dogs, He can handle a few prison-hardened inmates... right?

He better Pray!

It’s D-Day for Wesley Snipes! He’s in my neck of the woods for sentencing on charges of tax evasion. 2.7 million dollars in taxes to be exact. Some of Wesley’s Celebrity friends have written statements defending his character (Woody Harrelson and Denzel Washington).

The Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty of 3 years in jail.
In his defense, I do think most people who don’t get W-2 forms, either put all of their trust in accountants or just say screw it! But it’s the law so you gotta do it.
On another note I want to know how much it will cost to put another non-violent criminal in Florida’s prison system. I am in no way condoning “Blade’s” tax evasion, but the state’s budget is super tight right now I’m trying to be cost effective!

I’ll stay on Snipes-Watch for a verdict!

After totally jonesing on the Iron Man movie, and then hitting the shops on Free Comic Book Day, I j

After totally jonesing on the Iron Man movie, and then hitting the shops on Free Comic Book Day, I just cannot take my mind off of superheroes and superhero movies in general. The last couple of days, my girlfriend and I have been discussing back and forth how and Avengers movie would look, and when in the world will a Wonder Woman movie come out? (She's thinking Hillary Swank would be perfect, while I cast my discerning eye at Summer Glau.) So to help get it out of my system, here's a look at some superhero movies past. Sit back and reminisce with me, won't you?

Batman (1966) --- So before they turned him all dark and gritty (which is how I like the consistency of my basement flooring), Batman was running around in ill-fitting tights that looks like something sewed together for the San Diego Comic Con. Modern movie-goers like to complain when a movie features more than one villain, as if one villain per superhero movie was a hard and fast rule. The 60's Batman movie featured four, and they were played by top-notch actors like Burgess Meredith and Cesar Romero. Unfortunately, the movie was actually more corny than the TV show for some reason. By the way, Batman pioneered the whole "the longer the gag goes, the funnier it gets" humor card when trying to dispose of a comically oversized novelty bomb without harming innocent little ducks. Suck on that, Family Guy! Rating: 3/5

Hulk --- I don't hate Ang Lee. In fact, I rather enjoyed Sense & Sensibility. But the Hulk movie was such a big, ponderous mess that Marvel had to reboot the franchise and start all over again in record time. Some people --- mostly hipsters --- are convinced that the mope-fest is a hallmark of superhero cinema, touching on psychological issues that few of these testosterone-fests fail to touch. To which I say: please explain away the last 15 minutes of the movie. You know, when Hulk's dad turned into a jellyfish. Besides, hipsters are the kind of people that like terrible things just because it's ironic, so their judgment should never be considered gospel by anyone. Rating: 2/5

X-Men 3 --- Screw the haters. I really liked this movie. Sure, it has its flaws, but on the whole I felt it was more cinematic than the previous two entries. The first movie felt a little claustrophobic with its set pieces. The second was Weapon X heavy, and I've always hated those stories in the comics. (And I don't particularly hate Wolvie, either.) But the third finally captured a lot of the spirit of the X-Men comic books. The long lines of mutants being pelted by protesters. Mageto introducing himself to a bunch of freaks at what looks like the Tenderloin in SF. Juggernaut calling Kitty Pryde a female dog. Some of the action was confusing, sure, but aren't most comic books? Rating: 4/5

The Shadow --- Um... I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world who saw this movie. It was release around the time the 1989 Batman movie was spearheading the first wave of super-mania, which also resulted in The Phantom movie and the Mystery Men. I don't remember much about this movie except that Alex Balwin was supposed to be a Mongolian or a Chinese man, which he most definitely is not. Rating: 2/5

Spawn --- This is the sort of movie where you look back and absolutely hate everything that made you anticipate it in the first place. When it came out, Image Comics was sort of this rebel outfit that stood up for creator rights and gave the big middle finger to the Big Two. Now I see them as a bunch of sniping prima-donnas and the main perpetrators of the 1990's "extreme" aesthetic to the detriment of storytelling. Todd McFarlane was seen as a regular joe with a strong creativity streak instead of some iracible multi-millionaire who sells toys, designs ugly hockey logos, and purchases overpriced baseball paraphenalia. And then we have the Spawn movie, a dark, lifeless movie that ends in the most confusing showdowns with Satan ever committed to CGI. Rating: 1/5

Spider-Man --- I remember reading in the 80's where the big thing was to have Spidey fight some sort of cosmic threat. There were similar stories when James Cameron was attached to this movie. So it's always been a wonder that this movie turned out to be so right. My personal hallmark, though, is when the movie first shows us the curmudgeonly editor of the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson. In the theater, you could hear the widespread gasps when everyone stared at the screen in collective recognition. It's the sort of nerd-joy that won't be felt until the post-credit sequence in this year's Iron Man. Rating: 5/5

Blade 2 --- Despite some super-cheezy special effects (like when Wesley spilts a villain in two), this is a fine vampire movie that had enough heartbreaking betrayals and twists to keep it interesting. Too bad it will be best known for Harry Knowles' sad, sad perversions and how they ruined AICN. Rating: 4/5
