این نرم افزار جامع از دیرباز به سبب رایگان و متن باز بودنش، مورد توجه و علاقه کاربران سیستم عامل لینوکس بوده است.با این حال نسخه 3.0 آن علاوه بر قالب استاندارد جدید ODF، از تمام فایل های ایجاد شده توسط نرم افزار آفیس 2007 مایکروسافت از قبیل docx، pptx و نیز نسخه های قبلی آفیس، پشتیبانی می کند.
در نسخه جدید این نرم افزار رایگان و در قسمت Start Centre آن تغییراتی ایجاد شده و آیکون های جدیدی بدان اضافه شده اند.همچنین یک نوار وضعیت جدید به نام «زوم کنترل» در آن دیده می شود.نرم افزار Calc آن نیز پیشرفت هایی کرده است و می توان تعداد ستون ها را در هر صفحه تا 1024 ستون افزایش داد.
در سایر نرم افزارهای این مجموعه از قبیل Chart، Draw و Impress نیز قابلیت های جدیدی اضافه شده است.
بنا به گفته سازندگان، پس از جمع آوری گزارش های مربوط به باگ ها و اشکالات موجود از کاربران و استفاده کنندگان نسخه بتا، نسخه اصلی تا چهار ماه دیگر و در حدود ماه سپتامبر عرضه خواهد شد.

La prima grande novità di OpenOffice 3.0 è costituita dal nuovo "Start Center", una innovativa porta di ingresso attraverso cui selezionare le attività da svolgere, o i file da modificare e integrare. Assecondando la richiesta di numerosi utenti, gli sviluppatori hanno poi implementato un nuovo controllo per lo zoom nella barra di stato degli applicativi, sulla falsa riga delle funzioni di ingrandimento presenti ormai da tempo nei browser.

Sensibili alla nuova ondata di istanze per la gestione collaborativa dei file e dei documenti, i programmatori di OpenOffice 3.0 hanno migliorato alcune funzioni del sistema legate alla gestione delle attività di gruppo, specialmente nei fogli di calcolo, ora più estesi e dotati di un maggior numero di funzioni matematiche. Notevoli passi in avanti sono stati poi compiuti sul piano della compatibilità con le altre suite per la produttività, proprietarie o meno. Il nuovo OpenOffice è in grado di gestire lo standard OpenDocument Format 1.2 (ODF) ed è in grado di elaborare le estensioni dei file di Office 2007 e Office 2008 per Mac senza particolari difficoltà. A questi si aggiungono poi i file prodotti dalle versioni precedenti di Microsoft Office in formato binario.

La versione 3.0 di OpenOffice porta, infine, importanti novità per il crescente numero di utenti Mac. Intenzionati a colonizzare con maggiore capillarità i computer della mela, gli sviluppatori hanno reso la nuova versione della suite compatibile con Mac OsX senza la necessità di installare l'estensione X11. Sui Mac, OpenOffice 3.0 eredita l'interfaccia grafica Aqua, risultando anche dal punto di vista estetico un programma non più "estraneo" ai prodotti Apple.

OpenOffice 3.0 in versione beta può essere scaricato direttamente dal sito web della suite di applicativi in lingua inglese. Le piattaforme supportate sono le tradizionali: Ms-Windows (145 Mb), Linux (circa 165 Mb), Mac OsX (168 Mb) e OpenSolaris (circa 190 Mb). Le versioni localizzate, anche in lingua italiana, dovrebbero giungere entro poche settimane.

Tantangan yang saya sebutkan tadi, tidak saya tinggalkan begitu saja. File yang diberikan tetap saya buka untuk melihat isinya. Lalu saya coba buka proteksi sheet (dari Menu Tools). Terlihat disitu ada tanda centang di bagian "Sheet".

Ketika tanda centang (check) itu saya klik dengan maksud memunculkan dialog box untuk entri password..tidak ada dialog box yang keluar! Lha? Ternyata sheet langsung terbuka proteksinya, tanpa permintaan password sama sekali.

File spreadsheet yang saya gunakan adalah file yang dibuat langsung dari Ms. Office (format .xls) Hal ini jelas mengherankan buat saya. Lalu saya teringat file-file spreadsheet (Excel, Ms. Office) saya yang selama ini saya proteksi dengan password sewaktu saya masih menggunakan Ms. Windows. Tanpa berniat mengambil resiko, semua file saya ubah menjadi format.ods (OpenOffice)

I decided to give Open Office a try before it came time to purchase the new computer, so I'd have a good idea if I could live without the Microsoft suite.

I've already abandoned MS Outlook. I use Mozilla Thunderbird near exclusively at this point, and its customizability and addons make it a top notch program in my book. If you are looking for another free alternative, Microsoft's Windows Live Mail is a nice program for mail and newsgroups (no calendar), but for my money Thunderbird is where it's at. There's a new version in the works which will incorporate new features like chat integration.

The Open Office download took several minutes even over a cable modem, but installed very quickly. In a short period of time I was already playing around with Writer, mostly arranging the toolbars and buttons to my preference.

I tested a few Word2003 documents which all seemed to open fine and I saved them both in Word format and in Open Document format. MS Word won't recognize the .odf files but was able to open the .doc files saved with Writer. OO did have trouble saving the document as a rich text format file. When saving a document as an .rtf the file wouldn't display properly when opened with MS Word. When opened again with Writer, it only displayed a blank screen. If a .rtf file was initially created with Word or Writer it would open fine in each of these, but Writer had problems opening other formats and then saving them as a .rtf file.

I also recently downloaded a database file (.mdb) which opened fine in MS Access 2003, but crashed Open Office Base each time. The program locked up when trying to open the file.

I also downloaded an Excel 2007 file which I was able to open in MS Excel 2003 with the help of the free conversion tool available on the MS Office website. Open Office Calc would not open the Excel 2007 file. It can handle Excel 2003 and earlier formats but can't handle 2007 files. The Open Office website says that they are working on a conversion tool.

So far the compatibility issues have been very disappointing. I'm a bit tepid about using Writer if it can't properly save and convert to widely used formats like .doc and .rtf.

The Base program will be useless to me if it can't open databases created with Access.

The Excel issue isn't a big deal assuming that a conversion tool comes out soon.

Overall my first impression of using the software to create new documents was very favorable. All the tools I needed were easy to fine and everything went smoothly.

I'm going to keep trying Open Office for a while. I like the price (free) and the basic interface. If I continue to encounter compatibility problems, however, then I will have no choice but to stick with Microsoft Office.

Oare de cati ani de tratament este nevoie ca sa scapam de calcul asta iritant? Pentru cei care au avut norocul sa se nasca in afara spatiului (ex-)sovietic, implicit rusificat, trebuie sa explic ca urarea lor reprezinta traducerea mot-a-mot a unei expresii din rusa - "s prazdnikom", cu sensul de "La multi ani!", "Felicitari!' etc. Din aceeasi serie, moldovenii isi mai ureaza: "Cu primavara!", "Cu ziua de nastere!", "Cu Anul Nou!", "Cu 8 martie!", "Cu independenta!", culmea fiind "Cu limba!", de Ziua Limbii Romane... Funny si nu prea. Imi zgaraie timpanele formularile astea.

Azi dimineata - aceleasi interjectii. Chiar si animatorii de la radio pacatuiesc in felul acesta... Pana am ajuns la serviciu, numai de sarbatori n-aveam chef. There are FREE, LEGAL ways of getting the functionality of Office, for absolutely nothing. What's the catch? Are they buggy? Spy ware? Absolutely NOT. Welcome to the world of Open Source!

Open Source Software is software that really doesn't belong to anyone because its software code is released publicly for the world to view and see how it works. This leaves anyone to make their own distribution of the software. The biggest example of this is the Linux operating system.

I hear you already, uh oh, Linux? Sounds pretty hard! Well, thats not true, open source software is just as user friendly as the commercial counter-parts. So whats the problem, why isn't open source software more popular? Well thats because people are not educated about it, im mostly stays between people that actually follow technology.

So now we are a bit informed about open source, lets talk about some programs! First on the block (and one of the best) is Open Office. Open Office has an alternative for Word (Writer), Excel (Calc), Powerpoint (Impress), Access (Base), and a simple graphics program called Draw. Each of these "alternatives" are very similar to their Office couter-parts, with a familiar graphical interface, and formatting options. The only disadvantage is that you have to get used to the software, because there is some subtle differences, like some menu displacement (for example: headers and footers are in the insert menu instead of the view menu in Microsoft Office).
Not only in Open Office can you work almost like if you were using the office suite, but it also has full compatibility with the Microsoft versions of office. So if your using Open Office, and you need to send a file created in Writer to someone using word, they can open it by saving it as a .doc, even further, you can save it as a PDF format, something office can't do out of the box!

If your open to a bit of a learning curve, then open office is you way to go. But what if your working on multiple computers connected to the internet, or just can't sacrifice the hard disk space. There are more alternatives for you as well! Stay tuned for when we talk about cloud computing tomorrow!

so yea....in calc we have begun derivatives.... so gross. i'm so grossed out i could probably vomit my lungs out..... >_<

rite...so today was just spazzy.....i had to hand in VY & DEA stuff to ash gor (he is the most awesomest evilly uber cool counsellor there ever was!! and i owe him bbt and like a bowling day haha~~) but, i had to work today too...and team b people were meeting at like 4, which was the time that i'm suppose to be at work....clearly that was not going to work out so which meant i had to find alternative methods to get my stuff to ash gor...which is where lampi-seen san came in to save the day! (i owe him bbt too xD~~) i tracked him down at math schoolie....but was late so had to kinda awkwardly enter his classroom...and like give stuff to him and rush away....(and almost like bowled over some poor random girl... >_< i apoligize...) so yea. exciting.

OH! and there are like these mini mini clementines...they're named "something chinese-gut" and they're soooooo good!! omg...i'm like addicted to them....they're sweeeeeet and like tiny...and i had like 10 today....i'm such a fatty.... >_<

Pero entremos en materia. El otro día aburrido estudiando estadística no se me ocurrió mejor cosa que hacer Testing con la calculadora de Windows: esa gran desconocida. Pensé en que sería divertido hacerla sufrir, encontrar quizás algo que fuera a crear un desbordamiento de memoria y que el proceso muriera... que se yo. Cualquier cosa con tal de poder escribir en mi blog: ¡La calculadora de Windows falla! y así que me linkaran desde barrapunto XD.

Después de probar las más variopintas maldades, me he topado con esto:

Si intentas calcular (((3!)!)!)!, a los 5 ~ 10 segundos te indica que la operación va a tardar mucho (de hecho, podría tardar perfectamente 100 años). En ningún momento esperé que la calculadora de Windows viniese provista de un sistema detector de bloqueos.

A su prima lejana KCalc en KDE no le pasa lo mismo. Si hacemos este test sobre la calculadora nos ocurre esto:

Como veis: el proceso simplemente se cuelga. No se ha tenido en cuenta que podrían ocurrir este tipo de cosas. (La verdad, no se si enviar un bug report. Lo pensaré :P)

Pero siguiendo en la misma linea de "rompamos la calculadora de Windows Vista", he encontrado algo que podría ser interesante. Llamarlo bug sería impreciso, casi injusto. Digamos que no se nos dice nada al respecto.

Si realizamos el mismo experimento (((3!)!)!)! en la calculadora, pero cambiamos el módo a Hexadecimal y el tamaño de palabra a QWORD, obtenemos lo siguiente:

3! = 6
(3!)! = 2D0₍₁₆ = 720₍₁₀
((3!)!)! = 0
(((3!)!)!)! = 1

Inquietante, ¿no? Respecto a esto, la calculadora no dice absolutamente nada. No muestra un MessageBox advirtiendo que se ha producido un Overflow a la hora de hacer el cálculo, ni nada que se le parezca. Se queda tan "pancha".

Sin embargo, si acudimos a la ayuda, encontramos esto:

What happens when I perform calculations with large numbers?
In the hexadecimal, binary, and octal number systems, Calculator displays only the lower digits of an answer when the result has more digits than your display size allows. This behavior mimics the way calculations work in computers.

For the hexadecimal number system, QWORD results can contain up to 16 digits (64 bits), DWORD results can contain up to eight digits (32 bits), Word results can contain up to four digits (16 bits), and Byte results can contain up to two digits (8 bits).

For example, using the hexadecimal number system displayed as Word, the largest result you can generate is FFFF (equal to 65535 in decimal). If you double that number (FFFFx2), the answer is 1FFFE. This contains five digits, so Calculator will display only the lower four digits of the answer: FFFE.

For the decimal number system, the three display sizes available are Degrees, Radians, and Grads.

¿Pero quién se lee la ayuda? ¡¡¡Nadie!!! Así que, ¿para qué engañarnos? :P
