What is madness, a compulsion to be shunned by the judgmental majority, perhaps? Is it a need, like writing, the one thing I have to do no matter what? I don’t know. I hate to write. I hate showing my soul, my secrets, my fears, my desires, my hope and my questionable humor to the world. I hate for you to know me, see me and possibly understand me. My insanity is one giant spew without filter or control. There is only the frantic need to express. Jack called it getting to the bottom of the mind. I call it madness.

I was without pen and paper, without my laptop, without anything other then the road before me. The highway was a blur leaving Miami. Only the desperate answer to the god of movement, shivered within me. I don’t remember I95 past Ft. Lauderdale. I don’t remember much other then endless cups of coffee and the constant burning of a cigarette. Music played but I never listened to a single note, hypnotized by the hum of the engine and nonstop mile markers. I forgot my name and why I breathe the air, why I get out of bed and why I continue on regardless of the situation.

In those moments of abandon, morality is only a concept and society a dream. Everything that pushes me to spit on sidewalks, caring only to dispel the taint of existence, fades with every turn of the wheel and every passing on the left. Faces blur and every guilty impulse to expose my vulnerability wilts along guardrails and flickering high beams. In those moments that grip my soul and refuse to be denied, I am god, my own divine inspiration. I disappear into all that is in a single instant. It's a never ending duality that blurs the distinction of heaven and hell. The insanity that ruptures the heart, reducing me to a bleeding chaos of emotion, vanishes and I feel whole.

There was no need to see the verdant trees of the Carolinas, the skyline of Manhattan or the quaintness of Rhode Island. I was gone and seemingly never coming back. I90 showed it self to me after 36 hours and the first turn off into Boston. My trance lessened and I pulled off to comprehend what had happened. Was I truly manic, in need of care, hopeless and forever lost to the lunacy that claimed my spirit?

The do not disturb sign spoke its warning. No maids, no escorts of temporary bliss, no food, just sleep so deep as not to dream. Total darkness wrapped itself around me for two solid days. I awoke and ordered coffee and cigarettes via room service. I stepped on to the deck and looked dispassionately at downtown Boston. A match book told me I was at the Regency. A faint knock reminded me of my other needs. I opened the door and smiled at the girl who brought me my soft drugs. The look on her face was one of concern. I knew how I looked without checking the mirror. I smiled as to let her know, “hey, I’m ok, it’s alright.” She smiled back weakly and almost refused the fifty dollar tip I gave her. I didn’t care, it was all I had and every server deserves a fat tip; even the bitch you want to stiff. Fuck it, give her a twenty, you could be dead before you reach the car. You won’t need it then.

I stepped back on the deck and lit another smoke, sipping on my black coffee; hot, soothing and perfect. There was a quiet and then an imperceptible twitch. I felt it grow, like a storm off the coast, building to hurricane status. I walked back in and grabbed some paper and a pen. Looking out toward the rain swept skyline, I could only take a deep breath and let my words flow like blood from severed artery.

The story so far: One day, while playing in a disused building site, young Adolf H. discovered a discarded brick. To others it appeared a perfectly ordinary brick, but young Adolf realised instantly that his destiny was linked to that brick. From that day forward, he vowed to travel the land imposing justice wherever he felt it was needed. Thus was born the legend of:

Adolf and his Roving Brick of Justice!

After a hard morning's work folding his laundry, Adolf sank back into his favourite armchair. He took that first satisfying sip from his eleven o'clock coffee and reached for his smokes, only to discover, to his horror, that the pack was empty.
"Mein Gott!" he cried, jumping to his feet. "Dis iz surely de work of der devil. He iz always trying to destroy mein Glorious Destiny, which at de moment is to enjoy a smoke mit mein morning coffee."

But our Glorious Hero was not to be so easily defeated by the foul machinations of the Prince of Darkness. He rose from his chair, and strode purposefully across the street to the local shop, bringing with him, as
always, his Roving Brick of Justice. After all, he reasoned, one never knew when or where injustice would rear its foul, degenerate, moist semi-permeable head.
In the shop, Adolf strode defiantly towards the shopkeeper. " I vill haf a pack of smokes please, and none of your guff, mein gut fellow."
"Wait a minute sir," answered the shopkeeper, "that little boy going out the door has forgotten his change. Oh no!"
"Vot?" said Adolf "Dis sounds like a job for mein Roving Brick of Justice! "Give me der change mein gut chappie. I vill return it to its rightful owner. Hurry, for der is not a minuten to spare!"
The grateful shopkeeper handed the change to Adolf, who marched swiftly towards the door, his trusty Roving Brick of Justice in his hand, all thought of his morning coffee and smoke forgotten in his desire to do his sworn duty.

"Hey little boy! You forgot your change!" he shouted at the rapidly receding figure.
"I vill never catch him now." he thought "De Brick is mein only hope!"
With characteristic decisiveness, he hurled his Brick into the air. His aim was true and the Brick made contact with the little boy's head just in the nick of time, for the boy was just about to round a corner.
To the cheers of the onlookers, who had gathered to witness this display of heroism, Adolf dropped the handful of change onto the pavement beside the slumbering youth.
"Here iz your change, little boy!" he said decisively, as he wiped the blood off of his glorious Roving Brick of Justice.
Just then the shopkeeper waddled up in his bourgeois fashion and presented Adolf with a whole carton of smokes.
"A small reward for enforcing justice so ably." he said.

"Danke." replied our hero determinedly "Justice iz it's own reward, surely, but it iz much nicer to enjoy it mit some coffee and ciggies." And with that, Adolf and his Roving Brick of Justice strode vanished across the street to where a cup of coffee awaited. Once again, Justice had been served.

THE END

Tune in soon, when Adolf and His Roving Brick of Justice visit Poland

The first major English-language study of Jarmusch

At a time when gimmicky, action-driven blockbusters ruled Hollywood, Jim Jarmusch spearheaded a boom in independent cinema by making low-budget films focused on intimacy, character, and new takes on classical narratives. His minimal form, peculiar pacing, wry humor, and blank affect have since been adopted by directors including Sophia Coppola, Hal Harley, Richard Linklater, and Wong Kar-Wai. Juan A. Surez's Jim Jarmusch analyzes the director's work from three mutually implicated perspectives: in relation to independent filmmaking from the 1980s to the present; as a form of cultural production that appropriates existing icons, genres, and motifs; and as an instance of postmodern politics.

Okay, I went to see The Dark Knight (imdb link) this past weekend — mostly because I hate to

Okay, I went to see The Dark Knight (imdb link) this past weekend -- mostly because I hate to miss out on being a part of a big time cultural event in this great nation of ours. After all $9 is a small price to pay to be a part of American movie history! In retrospect I must say it was one of the best bloodbaths I have ever had the privilege to watch. (Technically, I'm not sure that many people actually died in the movie, but there were a lot of really kewl explosions and why should I let the facts get in the way?) Seriously, a good movie even if you don't enjoy comic books.

Here's what I've rented recently:

* Coffee and Cigarettes (imdb link) - Jim Jarmusch (wiki link) is a great director. However, this is not one of this better efforts. If you're reading this in Memphis, I would recommend renting Mystery Train (imdb link). If you're reading this anywhere else you should rent Night On Earth (imdb link). For those of you who don't know JJ discovered Roberto Benigni and helped Billy Bob Thornton to get financing for Sling Blade (he has a cameo in the movie). Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, and Forrest Whittaker have all had leading roles in his movies.

* Rock n Roll Documentaries/Mockumentaries - We all know I'm a rocker through and through ("AC/DC, Van Halen not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Leppard..." ha ha). I recently rented a documentary about the former lead singer of The Clash called Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (imdb link)and a documentary about Hunter S. Thompson called Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride (imdb link). It is amazing how many of the same people knew and hung out with both of these guys. Both movies were interesting, but somewhat laborious. However, both might be much better if you knew very little about either person. BTW, there is a great movie waiting to be made concerning Joe Strummer's life from the time The Clash broke up until his untimely death. If ever make it to NYU film school and if I find that patron - you know, the one who shares my vision and his/her wealth making my vision come true - I already have my senior project.

* The Bank Job (imdb link) - If this movie wasn't based on a true story you would never believe it. It is an enjoyable rent. It's not art and there isn't some redeeming message. It's just enjoyable.

* Nora (imdb link) - I'm watching a lot of movies about Ireland since I just returned from there in June. This movie is about the very different relationship between James Joyce and his wife Nora. Not particularly well done, but still worth the rent if you want to learn more about James Joyce although it doesn't tell the secret of reading Ulysses without being a pompous ass.

* College Road Trip (imdb link) - There was once a time in cinematic history when rated "X" did not equate to pornography. When Midnight Cowboy was originally released it was rated X, and just to clarify, yes, I am talking about the version with Dustin Hoffman and John Voight. Well, apparently rated X now means porno and rated G apparently means sucks! This movie shows why Donnie Osmond is not an actor. Hopefully when he quits acting he will take Martin Lawrence with him! So, you're thinking "surely there was something good in the movie" and you're right -- Donnie Osmond had some of the best movie hair in cinematic history! No really, great hair!

* The Matchmaker (imdb link) - Once again, an Irish flick. I saw this one when it was originally released on video (in the days of VHS) and didn't think it was all that good. Guess what, first impressions are correct!

Late. No really, it is still late.

According to a recent study - Long-term coffee drinking does not appear to increase a person’

According to a recent study - Long-term coffee drinking does not appear to increase a person's risk of early death and may cut a person's chances of dying from heart disease. The study actually suggests that drinking up to 6 cups a day is not associated with increased deaths among middle-aged people. It also suggests that women who drink 2 to 3 cups a day actually reduce their risk of death from heath disease.

I drink coffee, albeit not 6 cups a day, but I enjoy a cup every morning. There is nothing like a nice hot cup of Eight O'Clock Coffee in the morning. For my birthday last year - my parents got me a great Cuisinart coffee maker that has the grinder attached - so I wake up every morning to the whizz of the maker grinding the beans for a fresh pot. Sometimes I get crazy and actually use my French Press.

It is funny to watch the evolution of coffee - what was once a cup of Folger's (the best part of waking up...) or Maxwell House is now Starbucks, Caribou, Illy or McDonald's Premium Blend. Even Juan Valdez has a storefront now. Whether you believe in fair trade, bold blend, robust blend, flavored or you like a cup of instant - there are a lot of options out there. I actually have 3 Starbucks within 3 blocks of my apartment. Not to mention a Cafe that serves Illy and the Bean Counter too! The coffee house made so famous by Friends can now be as popular as your local tavern and is filled with socialites, students, professors and everyday folk.

So - what kind of coffee do you like? Maybe you like a coffee drink. Where's your favorite place to enjoy coffee? Whatever the answers - the good news is that you can now enjoy your Coffee and Cigarettes without having to worry about the health risks - other than maybe some bad breath and discolored teeth!

No i jeszcze na Terapiach, bo chcę by były w top18.
Cyc to poważny blog, poruszający istotne problemy współczesnej polityki w kraju i zagranicą.

This clip is from the Jim Jarmusch film, Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). It is one of my favourite of the short films that make up the larger film with a common theme of....well, coffee and cigarettes. At times I thought I was watching myself once upon a time (re: smoking), and as I am now about my love of coffee, when watching actor Joey Rigano (on the left).

Put me on a plane and fly me to anywhere. The Augustana songwriter who penned the words to this song lived winters as I do. I read some of the forums after the lyrics on a few sites. Lots of people commented that it was about loving someone who is suicidal, and while this interpretation is valid I heard the song differently. You don't have to be buried in actual pills and blood from your slashed wrists to have the feeling that you will die if you stay where you are, and that the death does not have to be literal. How many people walking around are the living dead, medicating themselves with things, pills, obesity, illness, and on and on and on and on. This song gets under my skin. I just want to get on a plane and fly anywhere. Not away from anywhere. Not to anywhere. Just to be in the sky and marvel that humanity has made it possible to lift our physical body miles in the air.

...early sunday morning.. the mattress is warm and similar to your body shape. A pillowy blanket surrounds you gently and your right ear is slowly finding its way back into a world of notes and rythm. Shy sunlight is everywhere and your nose may be your worst enemy ´cause the air is fullfiled with the alluring smell of rainy clouds, yesterday´s vine and fresh pastries from beneath. You slip in your shoes, holding the blanket around your shoulders, passing the misted up window and the silent violin, over to the cold poky kitchen and finally light up the lil red button to free the aroma and livin up the day with a hot cup of coffee and a glowing Gauloises..

Coffee and Cigarettes, di Jim Jarmush, Usa, 2003, 96 minuti

Cast: Con Roberto Benigni, Steven Wright, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, Alfred Molina, Bill Murray, Steve Coogan.

Uscita: Venezia 2003, 12 marzo 2004
