“Journey’s End“
Journey’s End indeed, this season finale being RTD’s s

"Journey's End"

Journey's End indeed, this season finale being RTD's swan song on the ongoing series, and what a contribution this man has made, even just this week. The amount of media interest and fan speculation has dwarfed even that of series 1. And certain theories from last week were entirely correct, if a little out of sequence. Ten splits the regeneration energy off into the hand, refusing to regenerate himself. Fully reunited with his companions he asks Rose what's really going on because her world is running ahead of this one - she's seen the future. She remembers the stars going out, but far more important is she acknowledges that all the timelines converge somehow in Donna, and the surprises continue when the Daleks try to destroy the Tardis - not only does Donna manage to syphon off the regeneration energy, but she causes a second Ten to emerge from the hand. So far so figured out - the Darkness involves the stars going out, but who is Donna really and what's to become of Ten and his alternate? For that matter why did the Tardis door close itself on Donna when Davros tried to destroy it?

Martha reveals the Osterhagen Key as a doomsday device, and Sarah Jane reveals her own - a warpstar, which can destroy the Crucible world engine. And they need to, because Davros' Crucible, his world engine, powers a reality bomb, which he plans to use to destroy everything, starting with the stars. It looks like he'll succeed too, with the companions all transmatted into the Crucible before they can detonate their weapons. And another theme is formally addressed here too, with Davros noting that the Doctor fashions ordinary people into weapons - Rose into Bad Wolf, Jack into an immortal, but Donna into...what? With all the companions and Ten and his alternate trapped and reality's time running short, she reveals her place in Dalek Caan's prophecy - part of the threefold man - the Doctor himself. In manipulating the regeneration energy she took on yet another aspect of Ten (his mind) and defeats Davros. Dalek Caan was indeed mad, but his prophecy all along was to destroy the Dalek race once and for all. No more for Steven Moffat to play with there - RTD too is done.

The Crucible is destroyed, the planets are restored, as is the Earth. Sarah Jane leaves back to her own spin-off for good. Jack leaves back for Torchwood, as does Martha, and it appears Mikey too. And this is where the episode falls flat on its face in agony. Rose, Jackie and Ten II go to Rose's parallel world. And with Ten II physically human, with his human limitations, such as a finite lifespan - he offers everything Rose ever needed from Ten but he could never provide. Rose could use her 'dimension cannon' to continue leaping between universes, but Ten explains Ten II needs her to evolve him to the extent that she's already evolved him - from angry, battle-weary Nine to the rounded character of now. And when Ten II tells her he loves her, she like a sap kisses him, acknowledging that he is in every other respect a precise copy of Ten, and they are left to live out their lives happily in the alternate reality. Rose and her family appear to leave once and for all, not complicating matters for Stephen Moffat either.

And then there's Donna. The aspect of the Doctor she absorbed is killing her and he has to remove it. But to do that he must expunge her memories of their ever having met. The strange heartbeat we hear had been explained - that was Ten II - he admitted it - but no explanation is offered for how the timelines converged around her. Was it fate? We still don't even know the true purpose of the attack on her in 'Turn Left'. Donna was (remains?) independently powerful since birth, and we are shown key sequences with the ring she's wearing looming large - most importantly when she absorbs the Doctor's essence. And was it just me or did it flicker at the very end? It's an awfully big ring, and a woman lifted an awfully big ring from the Master's corpse in 'Last of the Time Lords' - a ring which still hasn't been accounted for.

We know what Donna's 'loss' was destined to be, as well as what she was destined to become, but it was also said outright that she already was 'something new'. I'm convinced Donna and the Master are still in play, presumably fodder for RTD's true final word on Who. Irritating as hell, but the endings were clumsy as anything too. Rose settles for a xerox who really isn't anything like the original, and she still hasn't got over her feelings? Gah. How convenient, and how demeaning of a character who's shown so much potential. And yet again Jack's role is perfunctory. I'm not sure why Barrowman's still bothering. The edge the character had at the outset made him interesting - whilst he is pretty and engaging, he's now far from interesting. The theme of time going the way it's supposed to has run through this series, but it's far from clear whether it's complete. Some component subplots seem (as with 'Bad Wolf' in series 1) to have been ham fistedly delivered - why Rose didn't just reveal herself to the Doctor instead of Donna in 'Partners in Crime' remains confused - did she just know (as in 'Turn Left') the way things were meant to be? Being in the future in the alternate universe wouldn't explain that. Or was her last minute insertion into that episode an editorial decision (again as with 'Bad Wolf') to catch the die hards off guard, and generate attention for the series? I have to assume the latter, given that there's no way Rose can reasonably be used again under RTD's stewardship.

The acting this episode was good where it mattered. Tennant shone as Ten and Ten II (whose ending wasn't his fault), and Tate excelled as ever, although Freema Agyeman seems to have taken a step backward since series 3. I liked Ten II imprinting himself on Donna - apparently it was scripted that Ten spoke Estuary English instead of Scottish because he imprinted himself on Rose (the first being he encountered post-regeneration), and this is a nice final acknowledgment of that talent. I'm also glad Gallifrey wasn't one of the stolen planets, and although I'm appalled at the (apparent) final word on Rose, I'm unsurprised that 'Bad Wolf' really was just two words, the power of which Rose has established and exploited before. But even there, what was it about Donna's invoking the words (Rose pointedly not doing so) which caused such a powerful reaction by the Tardis? I wish RTD weren't channelling Chris Claremont quite so well - sometimes long-term plotlines need to end definitively. Rose's did, but Donna's didn't, nor has the Master's, nor has this episode's or even this series'.

So Ten is killed by the Daleks eh? I guessed as much.

The Earth is stolen by Davros and transported into the Medusa Cascade along with 26 other planets, which the Doctor discovers operate as an engine when aligned correctly, when he visits the Shadow Proclamation for assistance in finding the Earth. The purpose of the engine isn't revealed, nor is the reason for retaining the severed hand, and yes, I noticed that Donna still has something on her back (how much of this is really happening?). In revealing his presence to the Doctor, Davros calls himself Lord and Creator of 'The Darkness', which remains unidentified (and just how does Rose know about it?), whilst his Daleks invade the Earth. Davros is allied with Dalek Caan, who escaped New York in 'Evolution of the Daleks' through a second temporal shift, except this one went right into the Time War itself, and he saved Davros. The Doctor says that's impossible because the Time War is 'time locked' (the talent for seeing things as they are, should be and will be from 'The Fires of Pompeii'), except Caan has succeeded in breaking the unbreakable rules, and it's driven him mad. Davros cloned the new Dalek race from himself, and it's subjugating mankind.

Mankind in turn hasn't been without help. Captain Jack and Torchwood, Sarah Jane and Luke and Martha and UNIT all work to find the Doctor, without whom they and the Earth are lost. Helpless, they're contacted by Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister (they all know who she is), who has developed a sentient technology to contact the Doctors's former companions simultaneously. She appears to pay with her life, but she succeeds in reaching them all. All but Rose - why? Rose meanwhile is walking around London with a really big gun, and rescues Donna's mother and grandfather. Using Harriet Jones' technology, they manage (all but Rose) to contact the Doctor who has also been trapped in the Medusa Cascade. They all converge on the arriving Tardis, and Rose gets there first. And in his rush to meet his lost love, Ten is killed by a Dalek. Regeneration time, but what will be the outcome?

A patchy episode, trying to juggle far to many ideas at the same time, although the formal crossovers with the spin-off series are very welcome, if a bit ham-fistedly written (a typical RTD failing). The big deux ex machina is a bit painful - Harriet Jones' motivation is sound, but her timing is awfully convenient, and getting the technology from Mr Copper's foundation (he of 'Voyage of the Damned') is similarly awkward. Also the reused locations are an eyesore - the Shadow Proclamation in the same location as the finale of Torchwood's 'Dead Man Walking' and UNIT's New York branch in one of the Adipose Industry's offices from 'Partners in Crime'). But these are small quibbles, and I was genuinely moved by the Doctor and Rose's brief reunion. There seems to be no way out of Gwen and Ianto dying. There seems to be no way out of Sarah Jane dying too, and there appears to be no way out of Ten regenerating into Eleven, or is there? What is 'the Crucible'? What is the 'Osterhagen key'? What is the purpose of the Doctor's severed hand? What is 'Bad Wolf' really all about, and what's the world engine really for? If Caan was able to re-enter the Time War, what's to stop another player following suit? And who is Donna really? Very little revealed this week, and I don't believe for a second that most of what we see is what is really happening. Something's still on her back after all...

I'm going to guess: Ten's regeneration goes wrong and causes the severed hand to generate a second Ten (and 'prime' Ten will regenerate as himself, which 'The Doctor's Daughter' has shown he can do), whatever's on Donna's back might still be an entity feeding off altered timelines - last week's conclusion might have been both a red herring and a hint, which could make this the parallel reality which many have theorised since 'Rose'. Maybe she just has the Master's ring. One player - Rose? Donna? Maybe one of the two Tens looks like they'll go back in time and end the Time War properly. Given the constant tragedy affecting Ten and Rose, I'm guessing Rose will go back and undo even her's and Nine's first meeting, by restoring the timeline into how it should have been (hence the possible entity still on Donna's back having something to feed off now ). Gallifrey will be restored, as will the other companions (Jack no longer immortal?), but the Bad Wolf will end up heroically giving Ten back what he needs even more desperately than her. Who's been systematically blocking her though, and why?

Last night I and my family finished watching the 7 part, HBO miniseries, on John Adams (second President of The United States) biography and realized that the contradictions that existed in 1772 still linger. It is a fascinating account of the political theater that unfolded in the late eighteenth century in The United States of America. The HBO mini series is an absolute delight for people like me who crave for some authentic historical narrative. The sophistication of the dialog between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson was definitely riveting.

The type of democracy that evolved out of the American Revolution is rare. To the best of my knowledge, American Democracy is the only three legged democracy in the world. The three legs being: The Executive, The Legislature and The Judiciary. Rest of the world has only two legged democracy i.e. The Parliament and The Judiciary. The Parliament appoints the leader of the executive. The problem in this system is that there is no check on the Executive Power as long as the ruling party has the majority. In America the Executive could be with one party but the Legislature could be with the opposition as is the case today, since 2006.

The American Constitution is another piece of American ingenuity that has served this country well. It is short and reasonably clear. There have been Constitutional amendments from time to time but that is normal for an evolving democracy. In many ways, it is the people's democracy. When people talk of Great Powers, these are the three pillars of a world power, a written Constitution, Multi Party Democracy and The Rule of Law and Justice (Judiciary). China does not have either. How can it ever hope to be a Great Power, leave alone becoming a Super Power. This is only the beginning. There is a lot more to it, besides money and manufacturing.

America started creating an Educational Infrastructure, even before the American Revolution. Harvard College was founded in 1636 by the Massachusetts legislature, 140 years before the American Independence. Since then The United States has created the biggest and the most respected Higher Education infrastructure, perhaps surpassing even European Union. China, India, Japan and the rest of Asia put together can not even dream of the length and breath of American educational enterprise. Higher Education is the crucible of a Great Civilization. Nehru called these centers of higher learning "The Temples of Democracy".

The Magician' si 'The Jester from Leicester'.

Cam atat despre Campionatul Mondial de la Crucible.

Come January 26th, all the desperate people in this world (myself included) head to Madras, the city of worldly pleasures (Murugan Idly, Murugan Idly and more Murugan Idly) among other things. Unfortunately the reason to go there this time of the year is not the Idly but an event which goes by the name Odyssey (A long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune - as per Merriam Webster) quiz. However the fortunes of yours truly haven’t changed a tad. As with all my previous attempts, podium finish was not to be. That remains the final frontier as is the Landmark Open and the Brand Equity quiz and the Crucible quiz. The secret cult of quizzers considers these the “Grand Slam” of quizzing in India. Some self-righteous nay-saying general quizzers might disagree. For them my deepest sympathies - We are in it for the money.

So the Slam season started with a bang for the quizzing enthusiasts. As I didn’t qualify I am ready with a set of excuses as always: A friend / teammate ditched us at the last moment, last minute team changes, the usual 2 Tam / Madras questions and some major #$*& up in the prelims. I missed a painting question. :(

Although I had a creditable 5th place at the Kurukshetra quiz the previous day (akin to the Queen's Club Championship before the Big W) the disappointment for not qualifying was immense and was dealt with a vengeance at Duchess (a favourite Restaurant of mine) near the Music Academy. God bless the poor crabs and the shrimps. Among new things tried category I had the Hungarian Goulash there and said no to the beer for once. It was breathtaking.

I have decided (purely for self pacification) that from now on I shall make all my Chennai trips with the sole purpose of trying out new food joints. All those people who think Chennai doesn’t have much to offer in terms of food, please fire your holiday planner. Some of my best dining experiences have been in Chennai. Shall soon write about a new dining experience in Chennai. Quizzing would be a not so distant second.

From now on my team name for all Chennai quizzes shall be known as “We are here for the Idly”.

This week's Illustration Friday theme is "Superstition", so I began a study for the cover of a hypothetical graphic novel of The Crucible. It started as business card sketches, but this is a study executed in pencil and marker in my Moleskine. I'm not sure the costume is from the right era, but I am fond of the poppet and may make one.

This is a thumbnail image of the projected cover (the reason for the flared skirt). I'd like to try finishing this off, some day, with a woodcut effect and era-appropriate lettering.

As mentioned previously, the other plot idea that my brother Michael and I came up with was more alo

As mentioned previously, the other plot idea that my brother Michael and I came up with was more along the lines of the traditional fantasy RPG. It's not a ground-breaking plot, but its just as good as any of the others I've seen. I'm open to any suggestions / alterations. I don't really care what the plot is as long as there are cool weapons and spells to be had.

The crucible of life was used by the gods to populate the world with living things. The world was a peaceful haven until one of the gods took the crucible for himself and began to create beings which were ugly, vile, and evil. An argument arose over the creation of these creatures and a great battle ensued among the gods. Seeing the terrifying power that the crucible had when used for evil, the gods forged a magical hammer with which they intended to destroy the crucible. The evil one was subdued but it required the united effort of all five other gods, such is the power of evil. Even in light of his own defeat and the threat of his own destruction, the evil one refused out of spite to reveal where he had hidden the crucible. With no other choice, they destroyed the evil one intending to then find the crucible on their own. But unbeknown even to them, the gods were all connected having come from a single source. And death begets death... so their power faded over time and they too disappeared from the earth... and the crucible was lost and became merely a legend.

The story begins several centuries later. A power-hungry general fights for his king to win glory for himself but secretly curses the king and the fact that he himself was not born with royal blood. His men serve him but only because he serves the king. Without the king, he is nothing. In one of his foreign campaigns he stumbles upon the hiding place of the crucible of life. Using the designs left by the evil one, he discovers its secret power and how with it he can create beings without wills of their own; beings that will obey him and him alone. With it too he discovers the power of dark magic. While the evil one can no longer exist in his own right, the power of his spirit can be channeled by those who know how to invoke it. And so he builds an army intending to take over the world...

There are five different types of good magic, one pertaining to each of the good gods. People usually have an affinity for one type of magic or another. Incidentally some have an affinity for two or even three types of good magic but none have been found to have an affinity for all five. Only one who can harness the power of all five gods will be able to defeat the minion of the evil one and wield the magical hammer, or so the legend goes. But the hammer, the only thing which can save the world, has been lost. Like the crucible, the memory of it had faded over time.

A humble farmer boy finds a hammer in an ancient cave. In his hands it feels light and yet powerful. He inquires with the elders as to its origin and discovers that it is the legendary hammer. What surprises them even more is that the boy is able to wield it while no one else can bear its weight. It turns out that this unlikely boy has an affinity for all types of magic, but he is entirely untrained. He will have to travel to five different lands to learn the magic of the good gods so that he can harness them all together to defeat the evil general. His quest is long and perilous and he must travel alone. Will he be able to complete his mission and save the world?

That's pretty much it. I'm not going to go to the trouble to fill in the details just yet. There's plenty of time for that. In the meantime I have a lot of code to write. My future posts will deal more with the technical details of the framework: things that will limit the types of games that a designer will be able to make. In fact, in one of my next posts I'll explain how the framework will fail to achieve one of my initial goals (i.e. to be able to re-implement Crono Trigger). I have good reasons! Lots more to come...

my sister has had a hard time with my nephew leaving for boot camp almost a week ago. she was told that he would have access to a phone when he arrived in phx as the pre-stop before the real stop. but he didn't call. so she called the recruiting officer that night (the night josh left) but he didn't call her back. then she was told that when he arrives in san diego he would be allowed one phone call to let them (her) know he had made it safely. but she got nothing. so when i talked to her monday night and she hadn't heard from josh she was understandably upset. and then she still hadn't heard from the recruiter. i jokingly told her that she had used up her call and couldn't call him again and would just have to wait. he did finally call and again reassured her that he was fine and he would be fine. but she would have rather heard straight from josh that he was fine and that he would be fine. in another week or so she should receive a postcard or other correspondence from "them" that will give josh's address. then the letter writing campaign begins. the recruits are "deprived" of any outside influence and won't even know when brangelina have their babies, or which "celebrities" have gotten married, divorced, pregnant or arrested. forget the crucible what about all the inane gossip he's missing!

He was determined to be a part of Israel's most elite security cadre, akin to the American Green Berets and Navy SEALs. After fifteen months of grueling training designed to break down each individual man and to rebuild him as a warrior, Cohen was offered the only post a non-Israeli can hold in the special forces. In 1996 he joined a top-secret, highly controversial unit that dispatches operatives disguised as Arabs into the Palestinian-controlled West Bank to abduct terrorist leaders and bring them to Israel for interrogation and trial.

Between 1996 and 1998, Aaron Cohen would learn Hebrew and Arabic; become an expert in urban counterterror warfare, the martial art of Krav Maga, and undercover operations; and participate in dozens of life-or-death missions. He would infiltrate a Hamas wedding to seize a wanted terrorist and pose as an American journalist to set a trap for one of the financiers behind the Dizengoff Massacre, taking him down in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle. A propulsive, gripping read, Cohen's story is a rare, fly-on-the-wall view into the shadowy world of "black ops" that redefines invincible strength, true danger, and inviolable security.

You say you want me to talk to you and tell you things, but i cannot help but think its only because you want to keep tabs on me. You allways have to know where i am what im doing. Can't you let me have some personal time. I just want some time to myself sometimes you know? You are allways so needy, and hurt and cripple.

The field is deep these days. No one may ever take Hendry's seven titles. Christ, I would have bet no one would ever take Davis' six. Fuck all that. Ronnie is the greatest natural talent to ever swing a cue. Earl Strickland can eat a bag of dicks.

Not merely a 147 to defeat Williams. Not merely a semi-final drubbing of Hendry, arguably the greatest player (at least for consistency and longevity) of all time. Not merely a flash of what's possible. A demonstration of amplitude and, for Ronnie, fortitude.

Well done, Rocket. Welcome to the new standard of play everyone else.

Are you fricking kidding me? Of course I'm bringing my teaware. Oh, I'll MAKE room.

The house I'm moving to doesn't have any teaware to save its life. And even if it did, well, these are MY cups and pots, carefully selected and tested over time. They each have their own origins.

(Not all are pictured)

- Little blue and white china pot - I actually used this as a toy teaset throughout my childhood. I'm leaving the cups that came with because they're useless and tiny, but the pot is a good size.

- Yixing with white glaze decanter - I don't use this very often. In the past, I've used it as an open-steep pot, but I learned that it's a decanter for gongfu serving style, and using it for such will step up the quality of some of my teas. So I'm still taking it with me.

- pair of green and brown porcelain cups - I ganked these from my mom, who had gotten them as a gift from a houseguest. She doesn't use little teacups anyways, she uses mugs. They're made by a women's cooperative in the Philippines, and they really are especially beautiful pieces of teaware. The glaze on the bottom 2/3rds of the cup is actually made with ash from Mt. Pinatubo (remember that massive eruption in the early 90's? We looked at ash in the sky from my school window in California). The clay underneath is a pleasing white porcelain.

- blue-green ceramic mug with strainer & lid, japanese character - I have no idea what that japanese character means. Maybe someday someone will tell me. This was one of my sister's Christmas gifts to me a few years ago. It's one of my most practical pieces of teaware, and I use it a lot.

- small nubbly dark iron pot - given to me by the guy who introduced me to how great tea really is. Simran was his name, and I don't know him anymore. I dated him briefly; he was older, used to be Sikh. Did some avant-garde vocal music, installation art and painting. How did I meet him? Oh goodness, now I remember!

I met him in the city at a Tim Barsky show (a Jewish storyteller who also beatboxes and plays flute). I was wearing my Crucible volunteer shirt, and was volunteering at Epic Arts at the time. He asked me about the Crucible, we started talking, and I went over to his house and we had tea.

He told me that at the last Burning Man, he'd carried a mobile tea unit - a big suitcase that held a propane stove, pots, cups, and myriad varieties of tea. There was a really bitter tea he had me try that was almost as bad as bitter melon; he said one woman there actually asked for it by name, and for her, the bitterer the better.

The store he bought the pot from informed him that it was actually an inkpot. He said, "Not anymore!" I use this pot for blacks and puers exclusively; it brews one little cup at a time.

- borosilicate glass owl pot - IMO, borosilicate glass is the supreme queen of all teapot materials, practically speaking. For all-around qualities and everyday use, the best. Heat retention and transmission; durability; and you can see the tea! I think every tea lover should have at least one borosilicate pot. The beauty of a glass pot is all in the form. Christianna has one of these too, we both bought ours at Far Leaves. We used to meet there to study, when she was in Berkeley and I was at Mills.

Uhhh... maybe I'll continue this later. There are a few more pieces that deserve to be named, but I'm tired of writing about teacups, and I'm sure you've stopped reading by now.

Attachment, on a scale of 1-10 (not at all - it’s part of my being): 9

In alta ordine de idei , Selby ocupa in prezent locul 4 in clasamentul mondial dupa victoria impotriva lui O`Sullivan in finala Welsh Open-ului . Cu punctele acumulate a urcat un loc , fata de locul 5 de acum 2 luni , in timp ce O`Sullivan s-a distantat la 3000 de puncte in fata ocupantului locului 2 , Sean Murphy , cu doar doua turnee ramase : China Open intre 22/3-29/3 si Campionatul Mondial intre 18/4-03/5 .

Smithsonian Magazine has a nice article about the history of the Salem Witch Trials. Just coming out of being involved in "The Crucible", it was a nice read.

In January of 1692, Reverend Parris' daughter Elizabeth, age 9, and niece Abigail Williams, age 11, started having "fits." They screamed, threw things, uttered peculiar sounds and contorted themselves into strange positions, and a local doctor blamed the supernatural. Another girl, Ann Putnam, age 11, experienced similar episodes. On February 29, under pressure from magistrates Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne, the girls blamed three women for afflicting them: Tituba, the Parris' Caribbean slave; Sarah Good, a homeless beggar; and Sarah Osborne, an elderly impoverished woman.
