Nu exista in biserici in primul rand analisti care sa cunoasca starea actuala a societatii.

In general provocarile societatii vin sub forma unor lucruri pozitive, in schimb miezul este o mare capcana.

10 Ideas for Breaking the 65 Barrier

It’s not necessarily about implementing every one of these. See which ones of these fit in your given context. And don’t let your learning and growing end here.

1. Define reality.

Where are we as a church?

Look at past 6 months or year and look at your average attendance in a month. This will give you a more realistic picture of where you’re at.

You need to do this with adults specifically. The 65 barrier is really about adult involvement.

Maybe graph this out so you can see trends.

Doing this will help you see how far you’ve come in a year from now.

2. Grow yourself.

Lead Pastors need to grow.

Maybe one of the reasons you can’t pass this barrier is because you’ve become the lid on the organization.

3. Make space for your church to grow.

The number of reasonable seats in your worship space.

Do you have enough space to grow your church beyond 65?

70% rule. When your seating gets to 70% of what the room will hold you are full capacity. This is peculiar to American culture.

So to get past 65 you need at bare minimum 100 seats.

4. Casting a vision for growth.

Do you have a clear vision for your church to grow.

This isn’t just developing a vision statement. It’s spending time with God asking him what his vision is for the church to grow.

Do you just share the vision of the church or also the benefits of that vision? That’s addressing the “Why” question.

Develop a list of 100 reasons why my church should grow. (nb: this would be a good exercise.)

5. Have a couple of tough conversations.

You may realize you have a few people standing in the way of growth.

There may be people who are creating negativity and barriers for vision.

Once you decide you’re going to grow you will probably lose some people.

There are going to be times where some people need to move on to a church a that fits them.

Don’t do this lightly.

6. Personally mentor new leadership.

Find a handful of people, especially new people, and invest in them.

If you are to grow you need to identify new leaders continually.

Not necessarily a long drawn out 2 year process. Rather, drawing people together periodically to talk about where the church is heading, etc.

7. Focus on the Sunday service.

Many are focused on way too much.

When are you finished with your sermon prep for Sunday?

Two ways to focus more on your Sunday service:

Work on your preaching. (Grow as a communicator.)

Re-evaluate your worship service. (Does it need to change? Learn from other churches.)

8. Break the 65 barrier with a special sermon series.

Focus on a very “attractive” series.

Why am I here? Marriage/family. Relationships.

One of the primary goals at this point is to gather people.

Spend time considering when to launch this special emphasis series.

9. Go full-time with church.

To break this barrier the lead pastor needs to be full-time not bi-vocational.

Consider adding another full-time staff if you are already full-time.

You must always staff for next level not this one.

You will never have enough money to staff, so you have to staff your church for growth at the next level.

Sounds simple, it’s risky, but it will pay off at the end.

10. Think 125.

Start thinking like a church twice your size.

If you do this you’ll be able break these growth barriers. (nb: this is the basic idea of reverse engineering.)

One of the best ways to do this is to get around some pastors of churches that have larger churches and then learn from their experience.

Attend some key conferences to learn how to break these growth barriers.

Concluding thoughts:

Set a timetable to break this barrier. Place some growth goals in front of you.

Listen to God as he speaks to you about your church.

Commit freshly to evangelism. Breaking growth barriers is all about reaching people far from God.

by Mark Labberton, pastor of First

I hear two voices—assessing, accusing.
Which will I listen to?
by Mark Labberton, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, California.

Pastors have always been Sunday fare, but performance expectations can arrive by special delivery any day of the week. On one such day, a congregant arrived in my office to tell me just what she made of my performance as a pastor. In summary, not much.

She was expansive in the adjectives she used to describe my deficiencies. As I listened, I recognized some truth in what she said. But she wanted more than my agreement, she wanted my resignation. Her logic was simple: "If you are not who you should be, you shouldn't be a pastor." By grace, I realized there was another logic worth considering. It says, "You are not who you should be, and God wants to use you anyway."

God's mysterious strategy is to use fallen people to witness to a gospel of hope and transformation. That means underperformance is built into the paradigm. It means those who do not live up to expectations are the very people God uses to call others who don't measure up either. This approach is completely counterintuitive, but then so is grace.

Grace is not an excuse to hide our deficiencies or deny our failures, and it's not a heat shield to protect us from getting burned. But grace does mean our failures don't have to paint us into a corner where the only way out is to abandon our call. Grace sets our lives in what the psalmist calls "the broad place," off the knife-edge of judgment, and nowhere near the winner-takes-all option some may offer us.

I tried to respond gently to the outspoken critic in my office. "You are more right than you know," I told her. "I don't have many of the qualities of a gifted pastor. But you have the wrong list of deficiencies. The real list is far worse. God knows the real list, and God, by his grace, has still called me to be a pastor."

I believe what I said, but living it is far more difficult. The temptation in ministry is always to focus on expectations rather than grace.

In a very difficult season when finances were tight, I was driving a dilapidated car that had been donated to the church. It had lots of problems, including a ceiling lining that drooped down and grazed my head every time the broken shock absorbers launched me from the seat toward the roof. The car began to speak to me. It said, "Failure." Why couldn't I get my life together? I was getting older every year, I had a family, this car was humiliating, and I felt like a failure.

This continued for months until the day I took the car to the airport to pick up my nieces. It was a very hot day, the air-conditioning in the car didn't work (surprise), so all four windows were down. Only later did I realize vinyl flakes from the sun-scorched dashboard were being blown into the backseat and covering my sweet nieces.

That day, still without the funds to buy a second car, we leased a new car. It was wonderful! No flakes, no droopy ceiling lining, no broken shocks. I was thrilled until the day this car also began to talk. Its message was also just one word: "Fraud." I was no more put together, no more successful with this new car than with the scuzzy borrowed one. It just looked better. I was a fake.

My life swings between voices calling "failure" and "fraud." The key is not listening to either. I'm not as bad as my critics accuse me of being, but I'm not as good as I've led some to believe. And right there, in the truth somewhere in between, is where we hear the voice of God. He still says to me, and to everyone called to follow Jesus, "I want you and I will use you."

In ministry performance matters, but grace matters more.

a. trebuie să-i iubim pe oameni.
c. trebuie să-i aducem pe oameni înaintea Mântuitorului.

The roll of yellow barricade tape was lying on the floor in the corner of the church. I thought maybe one of the police or fireman left it there by mistake. After all, it was 4:00AM, and things were still pretty chaotic. I was completing another Saturday nightshift at Ground Zero, where I was privileged to serve as a chaplain to the rescue and recovery workers. Though I am a Christian, I worked with people of all faith traditions, with those who had no faith, and with those who had lost their faith. Tired but curious, I bent down to look at the roll of yellow barricade tape, and saw that instead of the usual writing, “Police — Do Not Cross” it read, “GOD AT WORK.”

I got a resource a while back from Nelson Searcy on Breaking the 65 Barrier.

Searcy is the Lead Pastor of The Journey in Manhattan. They’re having a significant impact in NYC but they are also helping to shape the church planting culture across the country.

It might also be helpful to note, in light of the topic in this resource, that Searcy has helped the Journey pass through the 65, 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 barriers. So he speaks as a practitioner who has had to address these issues practically, not merely theoretically.

So with that, here’s some notes and thoughts from the resource:

More than half of the churches in America are under 100.

This is a barrier for existing churches and new churches.

The Bad News

Breaking these barriers requires you to make changes. If you do what you’ve always done you’ll get what you’ve always got.

Confront the brutal facts without losing faith (from Collins, Good to Great).

God what are you doing in this situation?

The question to ask: What is keeping my church from growing?

The Ugly News

You just may not be able to do it. The reality is some churches have systems that are designed to keep the church small.

Like a thermostat in a room churches can have thermostats to keep a church small.

The Good News

As you think about your church you probably already have over 65 people attending your church on a monthly basis.

Don’t just live and die on weekly numbers. Look at the monthly numbers. On a monthly basis you probably already have 65 attending. Now you need to learn how to turn occasional attenders into committed attenders and develop more occasional attenders.

You have to track numbers if you are going to have a true picture of where you’re at. For instance, you won’t be able to predict the natural attendance cycles in a given year for your church if you don’t.

3 Key Issues

Structure. How is your church structured? Rick Warren: You can structure for control or you can structure for growth (not both).

Fear. There can a timid attitude among pastoral leaders on this issue.

Pastoral Leadership. The pastor needs to grow and make changes because the pastor is the key at this barrier. (NB: I need to look at myself.)

Why church members often run from community despite their attraction to it.

In a book called The Different Drum, M. Scott Peck suggests that while we want intimacy, we often run from it. Perplexing, isn't it? We want to be honest and open, but we are not willing to risk being ourselves in a group of sisters and brothers.

As an example, let's say that Greg is upset over his teenager's recent experimentation with smoking pot. He wants help to sort out his feelings but is reluctant to say so. Brandy notices Greg's ambivalence when he tells the group he had a "routine week." But when Brandy inquires, "You sure you feel okay today, Greg? You seem a little down to me," Greg answers, "No, everything is going fine, really!" Unable to be honest, Greg fools only himself and agonizes in his own silent world.

If and when we are honest with ourselves, we know we need other people. While the rugged individualism of our time surely runs counter to this reality, there are additional issues that we often overlook. Here are four factors that influence our paradoxical need for, and fear of, community.

The Issue of Confidentiality
Lack of trust—or the issue of confidentiality—is one factor that helps us explain this push/pull paradox. Fear of exposure can prevent people, particularly those who live in small towns and rural areas, from joining koinonia groups in the first place. Grapevine communication is so pervasive in many small communities and rural areas that people guard themselves against revealing personal information with virtually anyone. Why should we in the church expect to be any different from the community at large in risking self-disclosure?

Overcoming such a deeply ingrained and often well-founded fear is not an easy accomplishment for planners of community. Assurance of confidentiality is needed before many will even consider joining a small group, and it is a ground rule that groups should adopt and follow right from the start. Even so, it may take a long time and considerable evidence that trust is warranted before many church members choose to risk self-disclosure.

The Issue of Truth
A second factor influencing this push/pull dynamic of intimacy is the difficulty we human beings have in facing the truth about ourselves. How often we wear masks and try to cover our tracks. How easily we deceive ourselves and others and try to justify inappropriate behavior. When we are afraid to face our true selves, and when we deceive others, we tend to flee relationships—with God, with ourselves, and also with others.

This urge to go it alone is not the only result of our deceptions; they can also prevent us from developing trust even if confidentiality is assured and practiced. If we conceal rather than risk disclosing our true selves, and if we deceive rather than trust others, we prevent the two necessary conditions for experiencing intimacy in our relationships: risk and trust.

What gives us the freedom to face the truth about ourselves? The Christian gospel affirms that it is okay not to be okay. Jesus came preaching a message of repentance and forgiveness of sin. Repent and believe in the gospel, Jesus taught. God's unconditional acceptance of us is what can give us the freedom to face the truth about ourselves—to be our true selves, warts and all. Rather than flee from others, then, we become free to reveal our shortcomings, to acknowledge our need for others' acceptance and support and care, and to change our ways. Rather than deceiving others, we can risk opening ourselves so that trust and intimacy can develop in our interpersonal relationships.

The Issue of Church Size
Besides confidentiality and facing the truth, church size can also be an obstacle that keeps us from realizing our desire to experience authentic Christian community. Our culture overly enamors a bigger-is-better mentality.

When a church is small, say with fewer than 30 members, it may be able to function as one large relational circle. But when a church gets much bigger than that, there isn't "room" for everyone to experience the openness, acceptance, warmth, and personal growth possible in the smaller community. This means that as a church increases in size, leaders must be intentional in planning and taking necessary steps to develop multiple smaller groups to maintain a sense of Christian community.

Numbers do matter. We cannot develop sufficiently close personal relationships in large groups. Relational development literature, in fact, tells us that it is difficult to experience intimacy in our interpersonal relationships in groups of more than six to ten people. Consequently, unless we plan and develop new or additional opportunities for group life, we severely curb both our Christian koinonia and our outreach to others.

The Issue of Time Management
Our crowded schedules may also limit the creation of Christian community in our congregations. Unless we drop some current commitment, project, or amusement, many of us simply cannot add another meeting to our schedules.

Rearranging time commitments is a challenge that needs to be confronted if community is to become a priority. Again, desiring community is only half the equation—the need or "pull" to intimacy. The "push" away from intimacy can be as simple as an overscheduled calendar.
