There is a debate currently raging on design blogs everywhere about the ethics of Los Angeles

There is a debate currently raging on design blogs everywhere about the ethics of Los Angeles' company Modernica advertising their fibreglass shell chair (among other pieces) as an authentic and original design, when it is in fact unlicensed. On their website, without mentioning 'Eames' they state the following;

"the classic 1950 Fiberglass Arm Chair, often referred to as the most significant furniture design of the 20th century, is being produced by Modernica in Los Angeles, using much of the original equipment that produced the original chairs".

Much of the discussion is focused on a letter Eames Demetrious wrote regarding the advertising of Modernica to Dwell magazine. You can read the letter here.

Perhaps the key issue is that many people are misled to believe that they are buying an original Eames chair. Although this debate is taking place mostly on American blog sites, there are also stockists of Modernica fibreglass chairs in Australia. Living Edge is the only showroom in Australia that has the Herman Miller license and sells the authentic Eames shell chair which is now manufactured with a recyclable plastic shell as the Eames Office believes this would be in line with Charles and Ray's environmental concerns.

If you'd like to read more on this discussion, see wallflour, apartment therapy and design addict which all feature some very interesting debate.

If we have the discussion about contemporary furniture, we generally discuss about furniture, which can characterizes and be utilized with any type of ambiance, despite they are contemporary fashion or modern fashion. For instance, if you possess one desk set, which might be utilized in both current and old style decoration, we commonly identify them modern furniture. Thus if you have this view about them, so you might need to modify your approach slightly. It has plenty of stuff, which has to be taken in consideration in a way. Affecting into the complete concept of contemporary or modern it is the type that matter on the categories of furniture.

Now you may be puzzled with all terms unnerved and all, therefore how to choose which one are modern & which one is not? To be simple and to be truthful, I should say that there is no obvious meaning to describe which one is modern and which one is not, difference is generally by the locks. The only principle is that you need to make a decision with your own choice that might depend on your preceding incident, a kind of important thing to think about. If you can observe the furniture set that too looks heavy in contemporary setting and you can notice its possible of position them in additional decoration style, thus you might be capable of calling them modern. That is just foundation on the material that is well thought-out in my view.

In addition, I think that dissimilarity or else no similarity of the modern and contemporary furniture have specified way to make complete furniture variety improves. I think that offering the foundation of the opposing of unscrambling the 2 but I imagine that one of things to think about is any of the 2 will do certainly. Contemporary or modern furmiture is an excellent notion to make it to furniture marketplace.

NORTH HAVEN - After four years of going without furniture in three upstairs office suites in their headquarters, the North Haven Police Department has recently purchased the furnishings that will fill them.
The furnishings, which will have been installed by Friday, include three sets of desks and chairs, and wiring for a new phone system. Without the furniture, the three office suites had been vacant, according to police, with the exception of some department records.

The new desks and chairs will allow Police Chief James X. DiCarlo, Deputy Chief Thomas J. McLoughlin, and their secretary to move upstairs into these suites - which are significantly larger than the space the administration previously occupied.

"We're happy we are going to be able to expand upstairs," said DiCarlo. With the new furniture, "it's going to be a lot more functional. My new office will be twice the size of my old one, and the secretary's office will be roughly three times the size," he continued. The furniture was funded through a $20,000 capital appropriation in this year's budget.

When asked why it had taken four years to acquire funding for the desks, DiCarlo referenced hang-ups in the $750,000 renovation to the building four years ago.

"What happened in the past, due to the budget constraints and the old contractor, who went out of business, the addition was done with great difficulty...it was beyond the town of North Haven's control," he said.
According to DiCarlo, he tried to resurrect the idea of new furniture for the department's empty offices twice in the past four years, "but it was put on the back burner."

Police Commission Chairman Joseph D'Errico Sr. stated that he was "overjoyed" by the news of the new furniture. "The bullying has been finished, we finally got the money," he said.
Once the police administration's move to the upstairs offices is complete, DiCarlo will craft a proposal to expand the detective bureau, utilizing the space the administration previously occupied.
"We are going to request some additional funding to make some minor improvements (to the detective bureau). It's not going to be a lot of money, but we want certainly a more efficient operation down here, and do a little expansion," said DiCarlo.

The plan will be created during the next few months and will be sent to the First Selectwoman Janet McCarty and the finance board.
DiCarlo called his plans for the detective bureau a "refreshing" of their space. He mentioned that the bureau had been using the same furniture for more than 25 years, and had been using the same location since 1965, with the same square footage

Still reeling from the monstrosity that is my credit card statement, I have been trying my best to limit spending. But with Kenny in his new apartment and my own impending move into a new, more spacious dorm, my instincts to nest/decorate are very high.

With some careful arranging, my roommate and I should be able to fit some kind of lounging chair in our residence. My search for this luxury is limited by space issues (sofa is too big), aesthetic values (wicker makes me wince), price (alas, poor college student), and, most of all, relaxibility. I have my eye on the Urban Outfitters Dish Chair. Fits all the criteria, except that it retails for $125, which is not much for furniture in general, but considering it's just an extremely comfortable cushion on a simple frame, doesn't seem worth it. I found it on Facebook for $50, only to find out it had been sold already. Heart crusher. Take off the damn post if you sold it already.

Besides furniture, I've been having a serious craving for posters and prints. Check out strawberryluna and The Small Stakes for some gorgeous music posters. Of course every Death Cab for Cutie poster is sold out. I'm considering one of the many beautiful Stars prints. It would be lovely to get the entire series, which includes various silhouettes of old fashioned keys and keyholes.

In other news, I'm starting to feel an attraction towards vinyl toys. How dangerous. I am abating this by printing, cutting, and folding paper versions from Readymech and Cubeecraft. Check it out, it's free and fun.

Why, yes, this is the first post I've ever made with pictures. </gasp>

Kita berdua so far cuman punya 1 kasur, itu pun baru aja beli 2 bulan lalu ^^ Sebelonnya, kita tidur pake mattress-nya sofa bed, yg sekarang nongkrong di garasi karena udah tipis banget & gak bisa dipake lagi.

Nah, dari beberapa minggu lalu, kita mikir untuk beli extra kasur, at least buat tamu kl ada yg dateng & mo nginep. Hoho... Krn unit yg kita rent ini kecil mungil, air-bed merupakan solusi yg terbaik. Ga makan tempat, trus not too expensive juga.

Cari2 online, nemu beberapa air-bed product yg harganya reasonable & keliatannya lumayan ok. Research review product2 ini, bagus juga. Tapi entah kenapa, kita ga beli2!

Tadi pagi, kita akhirnya setuju u/ beli air-bed. Langsung masuk ke Deals Direct website, ternyataaaa... out of stock! Kenapaaaa pas mo beli koq malah ga ada sih barangnya? :(

Inget2, ada 2 online stores yg jualan product ini, jadi aku ke website yg satunya, ternyataaa... out of stock juga... :'( Apa karena di sini udah mulai spring, trus banyak orang mo pergi camping yach? Jadi mereka pada beli kasur ini. Ato apa krn bentar lagi mo school holiday, trus bakalan banyak tamu nginep di rumah orang2 ya?

Huh... Ga habis akal, nyari2 di Mr. G, tp ternyata semua air-bed yg queen size ini lg out-of-stock semua. Iseng2, nyari lg product yg mirip2 gini, eh nemu sofa bed ini. Jadi bisa dijadiin 3 seat sofa, recliner, ato queen size bed. Unik banget. :-)

Seperti biasa, sebelon beli any products, liat2 dulu reviewnya on the net. ^^

I've been going through my files of digital photos wondering what I should feature in this new art objects post - the first for some time. I have already showcased many of the items which I feel are worth sharing. Of the remaining ones, I still don't have photos of some, or - like the one above - I do, but they were not taken with any care.

This being the first post of its kind for a while, I started off with the idea of doing something striking, but seem to have ended up instead with a piece for which I have a great affection, but which could hardly be described as a stunner. Having selected it, largely because I got side-tracked for ages sorting out all the files in 'my pictures' and now it's got too late and I want a result before I retire for the night, I realise that this does at least have the merit of coming from a place and a seller neither of whom have featured in these posts so far, and do in fact richly deserve a place here.

A decade or so ago, a prominent and extensive seafront space a couple of miles from here was taken over by Les, for whom I had an instinctive sympathy. Les was not raised as a better class of person. In fact, he was first and foremost a craftsman - a restorer with a passion for antiques, and the instincts of someone raised to penny-pinching rather than luxury. These were my early days as a collector, and I was not able to operate with any degree of freedom, always restricting myself quite harshly on how much I would spend on a single item. I regret that lack of freedom now, as Les' prices were always extremely reasonable - in fact, I think he consistently undersold.

There is a certain type of person - I know, for I belong there - who has the greatest diffficulty in asking a decent fee for whatever service they provide. This is partly due to low self-esteem, but also I believe because such people invariably come from modest backgrounds, financially-speaking, and are always acutely aware of, and sympathetic towards, the struggle which so many people have to pay their way in life, and the efforts which they devote to doing so. In such a conext, it is simply felt offensive to charge significant sums of money. The downside to this is that such people are usually exploited, or perhaps I should say exploit themselves, if that is possible. Les did a beautiful job stripping a Victorian walnut chest of drawers by hand for me - a labour of love if ever there was one - and charged only a very modest price for doing so. As in so much that he did, he short-changed himself in the process. I may well have ended up giving him a bit more than he asked for: a not infrequent manoeuvre appropriate in such cases, but that is not the point.

Anyhow, Les has long since retired from his attempt at retail, and all I have to commemorate it is the above chair. (The chest of drawers has crossed the English Channel with my ex-partner, who acquired it in the separation arrangements we made.) In those days I did not consistently inform myself on the details of my purchases, so I don't know exactly what period this chair belongs to. What I do know is that, despite its rather fragile appearance, it is as steady as a rock, and perfectly made for the job it was designed to perform. Everyone who has the occasion to use it becomes attached to it, which seems to prove that it possesses some kind of particular charisma. And all this for an inordinately modest price - perhaps £35 or £40, if I remember correctly.

I miss Les. I ran into him in a neighboring town some time ago, and he was very cagey about what he is doing these days. He was always a shy man. Anyhow, I keep the fondest memories of his tenure as an antique furniture retailer, and am happy that, having sold on the mock Jacobean chairs which I bought from him and which - notwithstanding their beautiful barley-twist legs and stretchers - did not suit the requirements of the heavier posterior (not mine, I hasten to add!), I have at least been able to keep my desk chair.
