Game Over

The main reason I was interested in the PSP was to play simple games, and Loco Roco fit the bill perfectly. (Plus it was very cheap.) The world has been invaded by these black squid things and it is up to you to herd these balloon like creatures through the world to stop them. Pretty standard stuff. Each stage starts with one of these balloon creatures, and unlike most games you don't control this character directly, you control the world. This is done by tilting the world to the left or right with the shoulder buttons and bumping it by pressing and releasing both. This causes the character to "jump". Using these controls you guide the balloon thing through the world as it rolls or slides and eats what I suspect is fruit through each level. The fruit makes it grow and in turn gives it the ability to break apart into smaller balloons that can fit through smaller gaps. It is fun and cute and quite addictive. I finished it in a few sittings and now I have the option to try and beat my scores. Also unlike most games, I probably will try it again.

The reason for that is that there is practically no story, the game is fun because the game play is actually fun. As you maneuver your squishy character, of which you can unlock 5, around the world you get mini puzzles to solve or alternative paths to uncover. The game is pretty easy and I'm not even sure if you can fail a stage, but this is a case of easy to pick up, hard to master. As I mentioned, you can go back later and redo stages over and over again. With these you can attempt to beat your best time, see if you can eat all the fruit or find all the secrets. It should keep you busy for a while.

Visually the game is pretty, but in an unconventional way. Basically the game looks like it was made in Flash, but a very advanced flash that actually gives substance to the things in the world. As things flop around and fall over you will find your eyes drawn to how realistically things react. Some of the surfaces are fleshy and sink away as your character rolls over it. Ice is slippery, and as my personal favorite, very quick. Water reacts like water, wind currents pick up your balloon things and blow them around etc.

Things are also kept interesting by different themed stages that actually affect the game play. You can make your way through a jungle, a creatures intestine and my favorite, the slippery ice fields. I actually told a friend at one point that the game felt more like Sonic the Hedgehog, than the real game. It has the ability to be quick and visceral or slow and sure.

In the end I must say that I really enjoyed the game and that I will continue to enjoy it for a little while longer. For a R109 price tag it is well worth checking out. If you are totally adverse to cute things and this type of game play, then I guess the PSP has better things to offer.

I give it: Highly recommended.

To me, the master of modern stop motion is film maker Adam Pesapane (aka PES). He can do more with a matchstick and a bag of candy corn that most film makers could hope to with a full crew and million dollar budget. Perhaps necessity is the mother of invention in his films, but he uses his remarkable skill and ingenuity to take the most innocuous household items and turn them into something outstanding.

His recently released short, "Western Spaghetti", is his best one yet and has to be seen to be appreciated:

In a recent profile in Paste Magazine, the brilliant Michel Gondry said of PES "Clicking on a PES film is to open a safe and see a million ideas glittering and exploding. The only reason you close the door is to re-open it just after and discover what will pop this time." Damn. High praise indeed.

A success at taking his own quirky style and integrating into commericals for big time clients like Nike, Sony, Orange, and Bacardi, he hasn't let his commerical work dampen his own creative exploration. And for that, I'm very thankful.

All of the shorts and commercials on his site are worth a thorough checkout (in fact, the more you watch them, the more you catch small details you missed before), but here are a few more of my absolute faves:

So I recently started playing The World Ends With You, a DS game by Square Enix. In recent years, Square Enix has been trying to address some of the age-old gripes that traditional role-playing games have been plagued with. Today, we'll look at some of these classic issues and see how they are addressed.

One such issue are save points. They've been around for quite some time now. RPGs on PC have typically been "save anywhere". I believe Final Fantasy 1 for the NES was the first game to incorporate save points, in that you could only save in inns, and if you had a tent that you could use in the overworld map. It wasn't until games like Tomb Raider that truly integrated save points into an action game as being part of a level. There have been countless debates now on whether save points are a good system.

Save points and save anywhere are both double-edged swords. If placed properly, save points can be an integral part of the game design, and change the experience for the player. When save points are littered everywhere every 5 minutes of play, or before and after every single difficult section in the game, then the purpose is defeated. But if they are far and few in between, the player is forced into a sense of unease. This sort of tension is good in video games. However, the downside of course is that if the player dies, they lose a lot of progress and only amounts to serious frustration when they have to replay a whole boring section just to die at that one difficult point. There is no proper solution to this. One way is to place checkpoints between the save points, where if the player dies, they restart from the checkpoint, but if they turn off their system, they start from the last point in which they saved. This isn't effective, as all it does is punish the player for not having enough time to play a designed level in a single sitting. But it does remedy the frustrating portion of losing 2 hours of game time because of player death.

For a game on the go, save points are that kind of punishment. Sure, portable game devices are blessed with sleep-mode, but this punishes the player for accidentally hitting the power button or for not charging their battery. A player desperately seeking a save point when his battery indicator is flashing red is not a type of game design you want to implement. Portable gaming is mostly meant for quick pickup and play to fill in the gaps of non-activity.

An example of such a poorly executed save point system would be Metroid Prime Hunters for DS. In fact, I refuse to even play that game, knowing that if I game-over, or if I accidentally power off my system, I lose A LOT of progress. The only available save point is back on your ship, so you end up spending a lot of pointless time backtracking to save instead of making forward progress.

As discussed before, depending on how saving progress works, it's a double-edged sword. The save-anywhere function can sometimes ruin gameplay, or worse, place the player in a situation where they are forced to start from the very beginning of the game. For example, if the only place you can save is at an inn, and it requires more money than the player can afford, and the player is low on health, then the player is screwed. Likewise, if you place a save point deep in the dungeon, and the player is close to death when he saves, he's stuck in there. There's no workaround to this other than an auto-save file that's separate - probably one that is just outside of the dungeon. But even that can suffer the same effect.

Another negative aspect of save-anywhere is that the player can "cheat", depending on how the designer looks at it, I suppose. It allows the player to "look into the future", restart from his last save point, and change his tactics accordingly. This is even worse when it comes to games that involve gambling. Essentially, the player never loses.

Because the player never loses, the tension associated to gameplay disappears. This is particularly bad in survival horror games, which is why most good survival horror games don't have save anywhere. Player gets into a potentially scary situation, and saves. Suddenly the player has no fear of getting defeated, because he can then just restart from where he left off, and already know how to deal with the situation. Some may argue "is that so bad though?" Understandable. Even without save anywhere, and the player dies, he will eventually get there again anyway. By saving anywhere, you are preventing the frustration of humongous backtracking.

Nowadays, with checkpoints and save anywhere, death is more of an inconvenience rather than a deterrent. How do you design a game in such a way that you retain the tension, while not punishing the player for needing to shut off his game to do something? Temporary saves. What essentially happens, is the game allows you to save at save points normally, but with the added feature of saving a separate temporary file that deletes itself when the player resumes. If the player dies, he restarts at his last save point (not the temporary save). This allows the player to stop playing whenever he wants without punishment, and also keeps the tension real, as well as prevent players from cheating and ruining the game balance. It's the best of both worlds. Non-saveable checkpoints can still be placed in if the game design chooses to, in order to help eliminate frustration of significant backtracking.

With that in mind, TWEWY chooses the Save Anywhere route. Since the player can get through a section without any encounters at all, the only thing the player loses from a game over are the points earned from combat to the point where he last saved. Usually, the player understands the risks involved for not saving often enough. In fact, the game could have used a completely behind the scenes auto-save after combat and it would have worked without a hitch. But it seems TWEWY likes to be on the side of flexibility for various reasons open to the player.

Flexibility in design is very important, but the sacrifices and changes in gameplay must be weighed out and countered properly in order to make the chosen save system work properly.

If I had to describe Dead Rising in two words they would be: Surprise Hit. Not necessarily in that order, but you get the point. Luckily I am not limited to two or even seven words. Years ago when I heard about the game, and even when I saw it, I was not left feeling exited. The premise behind the story and the time based factor made me worry that the story would be unsatisfying and would feel tacked on.

Thankfully I can say that any fears I had about the game have been put to rest and I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite games on the Xbox 360.

I went into great detail about the game play earlier in my updated impressions, but I will briefly reiterate. You are Frank West, photo journalist, stuck in a mall with pretty much anything at your disposal as weapons. Zombies have overrun the town and are swarming the mall as well. You are tasked to save random survivors and uncover the secret behind the outbreak. During your stay you are rewarded with PP that increases your level and makes you stronger.

Without spoiling too much, or anything if possible, there are some interesting things thrown in throughout the game to keep things fresh and that drastically change how you survive in the mall. These are not intrusive as some changes often are and add another level of fun to the game.

There is nothing I can really complain about in this game, the game play is fun and satisfying, the story becomes really deep and involving and it is beautiful to look at. Some more voice acting would have been welcome for the side quest calls as the text is extremely small and I usually have to move close to the TV to see what I have to do. But that is a small niggle and will be fine on an HD screen.

By the end of the game you will really like Frank and the other characters who are left alive. You will also be faced with some decisions that alter the ending you can possibly get, I got 3, and you can either replay the game to get the others or try again from your last save. Trying to get the "Best" ending is definitely worth it and really satisfying.

It doesn't end there either. Finishing the game unlocks new things to use in your next play through and even new modes to keep you busy even longer.

So, will I recommend this to other gamers? Definitely. Will others enjoy it as much? That depends. Some might be put off by the time factor while others might not like the combat, preferring more firearm based combat like Resident Evil 4. Anyone who likes Zombies and Zombie movies will love this game and third person action fans should as well.

I give this game: Must Play!

I must say, the hype surrounding this game was the main reason I bought this game. A friend of mine had the original Lego Star Wars and sounded quite pleased with the game. The funny thing about this game is that after all the hype I still had no idea what type of game this was. Lets just say I was pleasantly surprised.

This is a platformer and names of similar games that jump to mind are Ratchet & Clank and the Jak series on the PS2. The basic breakdown of this game is platforming, fighting and puzzle solving. The game starts with the player in control of one of the characters from the Star Wars movies standing in a bar. This bar serves as a hub where all six episodes can be accessed. Each of the six episodes are divided into six chapters that depict the main parts of the movies. There is no dialogue in the game and the story is depicted through humorous cut scenes and scrolling text, like those in the movies, at the beginning of each chapter. I was fanatical enough to watch the movies in conjunction with the games, and I was amazed at the amount of detail they put into the cut scenes and the world itself.

Throughout each chapter you will be able to control the characters found in that part of the movie, and these are divided into two major classes: the Jedi and blaster characters. Jedi's fight with light sabers and have all the Jedi powers you can expect with the inclusion of the fact that they can jump higher than the other classes. Blaster characters fight with laser guns and have grappling hooks that give them access to otherwise unreachable areas. There are also droids to control, but they are mainly used to open doors. Throughout the levels you will be faced with puzzles that require a combination of all the skills to complete, and hordes of enemies to defeat. Things are kept fresh with the occasional vehicle mission thrown in for good measure.

This game is fun, if you love Star Wars, you will love this. This is not a difficult game to get to grips with and anyone should be able to pick it up and play. That is what bothers me about this game. The game is TOO easy. There is no real penalty for dying except losing all your credits you picked up. You can sit down and play the game with no doubt that you will be able to finish it. It doesn't make sense why this is a negative point, but it does niggle.

Another slight problem is that the game is not very long. All six episodes are divided into six chapters, but some of the chapters are really short and you can easily finish an episode in one sitting. The fact that you never really die, shortens the experience as well because you can pretty much run through the game until you get stuck on a puzzle. The puzzles are pretty easy as well and usually involve pushing a box onto something else or destroying the environment until hidden Lego blocks are revealed to build something that was missing. I paid R199 for this game, so it's not that bad, but I think if you paid R500 for the game you might feel cheated.

Fortunately those are about the only things I can complain about in this game. The fighting is fun for the most part, the attention to detail really pulls you into the world and each character is animated uniquely to such an extent that you can tell who you are looking at by the way they move. Visually, this game is beautiful. I played the 360 version, so I cant speak for the PS2 version, but the Lego's look like plastic and the environments are nicely detailed.

The audio for this game is excellent. All the original music from the movies are in the game and the sound effects are spot on.

An added bonus for this game is the ability to play the whole game in co-op mode. I did not get the chance to do this myself, but friends who did say it's great. Completists out there will also love this game as there are dozens of characters and items to unlock. I personally don't care about that myself, but I know people who do, and its great for them.

Overall I enjoyed the game, although it did start to drag a bit near the end. Maybe its a good thing the game is so short, it ends while its still fun. Its easy to get into and fun while it lasts.

This game scores: Highly recommended

Welcome to Game Over. This is a new section where I give my version of reviews of games I finished recently. By the time it appears here I probably would have written a lot about the game already on the main page, so it will be brief and will contain my final thoughts of the game as a whole.

I will also be scoring the games, but not in the conventional sense. I have seen too many times how number scores are miss used or miss understood. An example of this is how 7 out of 10 is above average, but it is seen as an average score. Shouldn't 5 out of 10 be seen as average? I'm not going to go into that whole debate, and I will sidestep the whole issue with my own scoring system, which is as follows:

Must play! - This can be regarded as the "highest score" a game can achieve. This means that it was greatly enjoyable and that if you have a platform the game is available on, get it. No question. Go out and buy it now.

Highly recommended. - This score means that the game was fun and should be enjoyed by anyone who likes the genre. Go check it out.

Not bad. - This game was fun, but it didn't have that special something that made it stand above the rest. Check it out if you have nothing better to do.

Steer clear. - This game is not completely awful, but the negatives outnumber the positives. Check it out if you are a fan of the series, otherwise, I wont recommend it.

Oh my. - This is the "lowest score" a game can achieve. This means that I probably could not even finish the game because it was so terrible and I am willing to join a hardy band of warriors to go on a crusade through time to prevent it from ever being made.

Tell me what you think and whether it makes sense. Expect the first review soon.

O outro é Tetris - The Movie, muito interessante.

Clique aqui pra ler o post.

It seems much has to come to head in the “Vote Christian” movement in the last several w

It seems much has to come to head in the "Vote Christian" movement in the last several weeks. The Evangelical Manifesto is a good place to start. It seems that one of the persons formerly listed as a 'Charter Signatory,' the esteemed Ergun Caner (see my last post) has some not-so-nice things to say about the document and the fact that he was associated with it. I don't have a huge problem with this, other than the fact that it continues to fragment the once semi-coherent evangelical political faction. And the point of the manifesto is to de-politicize evangelical Christianity, so it should seem that the events of the last several months are in keeping with this desire.

Here in Lynchburg, and specifically the campus of Liberty, where I write these words, the idea that Christian belief should in some way be separate from politics does not bode well. It would seem to me that we need a balance, that "voting Christian" is not the answer, and that having a political machine is not the business of the Church. We have a force in the world, called the Holy Spirit. But I digress. I can't stand that fact that as Christians we are criticized for being politically active; yet it would also appear that success in politics brings power on some level. Does middle ground exist? We may find out soon enough, for several reasons.

1. James Dobson. He famously un-endorsed John McCain several months back, and he appears to be leading the charge of evangelical apathy in the 2008 presidential election. Should this be troubling? We have seen the fruits of an 'evangelical' president for the last 8 years, and all but the sold-out few have begun to turn away in shame from the debacle that has been unfolding for about the last 5 years. Between the economy, the war, the deficit, pork barrel spending, no real energy solutions other than to increase the problem with ethanol, and a general inability for the president to speak in public (I swear he has gotten worse in the last several years), it would seem that the religious inroads that created George W. Bush have all but been erased in the last 7 years. Then along comes Dobson, who effectively disengaged the evangelical vote from political discussion this election cycle. Like adding matchheads to a nuclear bomb, yes; but it still just doesn't help.

2. John Hagee. I have disliked this man since the first time I ever heard him speak. He has an old-timey tone and diction, along with a bonkers hermeneutic and a disposition toward the charasmatic. He is what has become known as a 'Christian Zionist.' One could imagine that support for the secular state of Israel that exists now in the middle east could be good in terms of politics, support of the West, etc. I would characterize my dislike of him during my undergraduate years when he would speak in convo as mostly ad hominem. Luckily however, Hagee has a few soleriological concerns, of which some would call troubling. I would call them heterodoxical. Hagee's support for Israel is somewhat counter to the evangelistic mandates given by persons such as Jesus in books such as the Gospel of Matthew. It also may run afoul of persons such as the Apostle Paul and books such as Romans and Hebrews. At any rate, The basic idea is that Jesus came to be the savior to the Gentiles but that the Jews will be justified by other means; OT covenants, or what-have-you. The motivation for this theological gymnastics can be found in Hagee's eschatology. This is because he takes the standard 'literal' dispensational approach to the book of Revelation and needs to match up the events found in Scripture with history. If this cannot be done, it will make his literal interpretation difficult to justify; it also gets him into all kinds of messes, including the statements about Hitler and the Jews that made John McCain disown his political endorsement.

3. John McCain courts the Religious Right. I was in attendance at Liberty University's 2006 commencement exercises that featured Sen. John McCain giving the address. He spoke mostly of politics and little that could be construed as meaningful to the graduates; however this did not matter because he was running for President of the United States. I wrote about the inherent stupidity of turning commencement into a political patty-cake in a post in 2006. I still think that today, although I think now John McCain agrees with me. He did not seem very comfortable in the role as evangelical courter then, and now he won't have to do it anymore.

The conservative religious movement in general seems to operate much more efficiently when it is battling against something or someone. The Clinton years gave birth to talk radio and the desire for independent news and other sources (such as dubious Fox News). Perhaps President Obama will be the spark plug the religious right needs to regain some of the ground it has both lost and given away. The conservative movement is self-destructing and there is precious little that can be done about it. We don't have the candidate nor the motivation to beat the liberals in 2008. Perhaps this break in power will allow the conservative movement in general and the Christian right specifically to figure out the way out of this mess. Note: think long and hard about the last few years, and then do the exact opposite of what has been done previously.

And to add insult to injury, we have to put up with Cal Thomas waxing poetic about Ted Kennedy.

Game Over.

I know you're excited about the HoS movie, but in all honesty, the last trailer sucked. I'm making a new one.

But now, on to the meat of the post. Today, I thought long and hard about my projects. I also took a good look through my comic folder to see all of the series that prematurely ended. And now, without further ado...this is my project list.

Game Over - The namesake series of the studio is going to be returning with improved sprites, writing, and a brand new team. But, while this series is my pride and joy, it will not fully return until Summer vacation. Luckily for you, my last day of school is May 5th.

The House of Sonic - The most popular series that the studio has to offer is going to fully return sooner than Game Over, and I am also planning on switching the sprites back to the 32-bit style, which will match the movie.

The House of Sonic: The Movie - The fist movie of the studio is still in the planning process, but the script will be started soon and a new trailer will be put out. Also, the sprites will be in the old 32-bit style, not Sonic 3 style.

Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter Unit 17 - My old Mega Man X series was somewhat popular, and I think that it deserves a second chance. Therefore, it will receive a site relaunch soon and I will put out issue 5 somewhere between the return of House of Sonic and the new version of Game Over.

Team Omni - I haven't talked about Team Omni much, but I am still working on it quite a bit. When the first issue of this chapter-based, action-packed, comedic, hand-drawn effort is released, you will be impressed.

Shenanigans - The other hand-drawn comic I have planned, which will be purely comedic and focus on one-shot strips, is going well. The only problem is that I still haven't designed half of the characters and I don't know how to effectively introduce all three of the major characters while still being very funny. I also have so many ideas that I can't choose the best one easily.

Tim Russert had Terry McAuliffe on his Sunday news show, "Meet the Press".

McAuliffe, the captain of the Titanic chairman of Hillary's doomsday campaign, provided lots of uncomfortably weird moments. At times, he appeared to be a Scientology cult member.

Part one of two is below. The video quality sucks but the interview is telling. I watched it live and the entire time I was wondering if he was going to jump on his chair a la Tom Cruise on Oprah and Shout: "I loooove her!"

Part two is HERE.

There's a shorter clip below that depicts a super weird moment between interviewer and interviewee. The clip is spreading all over the internet.

Good ol Terry tells the host that his dad (who he refers to as "Big Russ") is looking down on them. Russert clarifies to Terry that his dad isn't looking down on them because he's not dead. I know Tim Russert looks old, so you'd assume his parents are playing harps in heaven, but look at John McCain. He's over 70 and his mom is still baking him cookies.

The Clintons and their surrogates are living in la-la land. Poor Terry is making up reality just like his floundering candidate.
