HELP for Computer HELP

Does your computer have a mind of its own? Do you find that it is becoming increasing difficult going it alone, or are you relatively new to computers and completely lost?

We know that all-too-many computer software HELP buttons do not really help, they tend to make things much more confusing than before you clicked on that button. You are not alone.

Stats Canada reports that in 2006 “More than three-quarters of all households reported owning a computer”.  According to internetworldstats.com there are 237,168,545 North Americans used the Internet as of November 30, 2007 and that figure is increasingly on the rise. Out of those numbers, today Seniors make up a good majority of the computer purchases and are looking for ways to learn about how to use the computer. However, not just Seniors are seeking help. There are many people who have missed out on learning computers for a variety of reasons and there is a growing need for computer help.

As a computer instructor, I show a group of Seniors at Central United Church how to perform various functions on the computer, as well as use the Internet in a safe and secure manner. Part of the session is a popular Q & A where you can bring your computer questions and resolve issues live, on a large screen, so everyone can see how “it” is done.

Not all people are ready for a group such as this; they are new to computers and need some basic training at a computer “boot camp”. Here in Sarnia Lambton we are very fortunate to have a Board of Education who recognizes that people need a place where they can go and learn basic computer skills. They have opened the doors at Norm Perry School with the “Adult Learning Centre” (ALC). Here there is help for anyone from ages 18 to 80+ to learn computers at their own speed.

Sean Pynaert is the computer instructor who has been teaching computer skills at the ALC for the past nine years. Sean says that about 1/4 of the students are in their early 20’s and most are Seniors. “I had a 68 year woman in my class, a retired teacher who wanted some extra income and wanted to go to a call centre to work part time and they wanted computers [experience]. These courses are excellent for those who have never touched a keyboard and can “work at their own pace”. Those who want to brush up their computer skills can pick out what they want to learn. “Some people come in and say they just want to learn how to type,” said Sean. There are three levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. You can even earn credits towards a high school diploma with these courses.

Anyone who I have spoken with that has attended Sean’s computer sessions have had nothing but high praise for Sean and his courses and how easy he makes it to learn about computers and the Internet. To get your name on the list for the next sessions you can go to Norm Perry School at 660 Oakdale Avenue and ask to see Sean. In Sarnia Lambton there are other ways you can improve your computer skills. For example, the Sarnia Computer Users’ Group has been around for over a quarter century where people are helping people learn more about computers and technology. FORUMS and WHAT ARE THEY? Absolutely millions upon millions of computer users are now members of online/Internet forums. If you need help in almost any topic answers are only a few keyboard clicks away. For instance, we bought a travel trailer and needed to know how to winterize it. Well not only did we easily find that out, we were given additional information, from other travelers, regarding trailers and campground reviews by people who had “been-there-done-that”. YouTube.com is another way to get computer help. There are thousands of videos there on “how to”. Just enter your topic in YouTube search box to retrieve a training video.

The same goes for computer help of any sort. Just go to Google’s search box and use the word “forum” or “training video” with the search topic. For example, if you are looking for computer help and it is for a specific operating system such as Vista, type that into the search along with the word: forum. i.e. Windows Vista forums. If it  is a program problem you insert the program’s name along with the word: forum. Make sure you check out the forums before you join to see if they are the ones that you find most helpful.

While in Utah yesterday, my fly fishing guide Justin Harding and I noticed when using Google search from his iPhone Google Adwords advertising was sparse.

Initially, I thought it was because of the type of search we had ran.

However, after further investigative searches under highly competitive and advertised keywords, we weren't ever able to see Adwords sponsored links on the right rail - only above the first search result.

Can a iPhone Google search display more than two Adwords advertisers ads as is now?

We weren't able to generate any.

How is Google parsing iPhone search ads results for display? If they are, is Google distributing advertising to the iPhone with the same formula they use for displaying search results elsewhere?

Are iPhone screen real estate limitations the reason why we could only get two ads?

Even when we rotated the search results screen for horizontal viewing - under a Google search term that would typically have had up to ten sponsored links ( both above the search results and running down the right rail ) we were only able to generate two Adwords advertisers ads.

Will Google Adwords advertisers soon be able to select "iPhone" as a search distribution option along with "Google Search" and "Search Partners" within their campaigns Networks and bidding settings?

With 10 million iPhones in use and Apple's iPhone supplying Google with its largest source of mobile search traffic, adding iPhone distribution to Google advertising campaigns will give Google Adwords advertisers another way to target and reach an increasingly mobile search audience.

Google: According to ReadWriteWeb, Google will soon offer RSS feeds for searches. So what?, you may ask. Of course, Google Alerts already does something similar by providing email alerts for news and blog searches, but RSS streamlines the whole process.

YouTube: The video sharing and social networking site has added an audio preview button to their comments section so that you can now hear your insane random utterances before posting a comment.

That's right, now you can finally hear what "LOL!!! WTF! Your teh most retearded ever!!!!" sounds like.

In honor of its 10th birthday, Google has put up a new link where you can go back and search their oldest available index, from January 2001. You'll have no problem guessing what I first Googled. These were my results:

Your search - "sarah palin" - did not match any documents. 

Suggestions:

• Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
• Try different keywords.
• Try more general keywords.
• Try fewer keywords.

De entrada,  y comparado con la versión actual, llama la atención su sobriedad. Eso y que se anuncie que el número de páginas web era de 1,327 millones. Hoy, las páginas que gestiona se cuentan por billones. Por lo demás, es curioso y entretenido ver cómo han evolucionado algunas entradas en estos pocos años. En política, Zapatero le gana la batalla a Rajoy: "josé luis rodríguez zapatero" tenía 5.900 entradas en 2001; hoy 3.890.000. Mientras, "mariano rajoy" tenía en 2001 7.490 entradas, mientras que hoy tiene 2.090.000. Los dos, muy lejos de las 39.400 entradas de "josé maría aznar". Claro que éste hoy "sólo" aparece en 1.590.000 de páginas.

¿Y nuestro querido Chirón? Pues tambíen le hemos hecho crecer entre todos. En 2.001 "chirón" tenía 188 entradas. Hoy, 3.100.000 páginas remiten en Google al sabio centauro.

It's been quite sometime when I first optimized the keyword "shotguns for sale" and now it is already on the top ranking position. That's good news, right?

Not only the keyword shotguns for sale, but also most of the keywords that are related to guns, used handguns for sale, shot guns for sale, guns accessories, used shotguns online are ranking high too! This is the product of hardworks and strategies.

And now, I am working on getting the number 1 position for the keyword "Guns". Will I succeed? Let's find out. As of now, there are 118,000,000 competing pages for that keyword, and buds gun shop ranks #9, not bad right? - that's still on the first page. But it doesn't stop there, I will work hard to get the number 1 spot. Just wait. HEHE!

When that happens, I will take a long vacation break. So, for now let's see what will happen.

WHAAAAT?  Why does that search link to my blog?  I have not discussed dirty anuses, neither baby nor adult.  I do not like to think of dirty anuses (anusi?).  Even that Charmin commercial with the bear who's always joyfully pooping behind a tree grosses me out.  I have to check this out and see if my blog really does show up...

Oh God, do NOT attempt that yourselves.  There I am, page 3 - all because I named a post "Dirty Secret" and then used the word "assholes" to describe the, um, assholes that broke into our house.

And now, of course, I've made it worse by writing about it, my words forever branding me as a poop-lover in Googledom.  Well - welcome poop and pee fetishists!  I hope you enjoy my blog.  Tell all your, er, friends! (But please wash your hands first.)

How embarassing to think of someone reading the Google searches I've done over the years.  Stuff like, "Why is my baby's poop green?"  "I'm pregnant, now what?"  "baby projectile vomit," and, just today, "stinky cheese smell washing machine."

Jeesh!

But seriously, anyone else ever have a stinky cheese smell problem in their laundry room?

419 Scammers are starting to use technology more often to swindle innocent victims. I see advanced and professionally designed e-mails and websites, clever social engineering skills and scam e-mails targeted at specific people on a daily basis. That was probably the aim of the scammer who used Google Search to find Yahoo! and AOL e-mail addresses of people in the USA, who were desperately in need of funds. Yes, the scammer did a Google Search for the search string: "email address of people in the USA that are in need of fund @yahoo or AOL mail". Among the search results was a link to my Lottery Scam page where I explain the methods used by Lottery scammers to swindle innocent victims. The scammer was dumb enough to click on the link, effectively revealing his IP address and the exact search string he used.

A couple of things immediately caught my attention when I analysed the visitor statistic data. The visitor was from Nigeria, with the IP address 196.1.179.153, one that is often involved in e-mail scams and spamming. His/her Internet service provider was Nitel, the principal telecommunications company in Nigeria. What struck me the most was the search string used by this visitor. Did the scammer really think he/she would find the e-mail address of a US citizen, looking for funds on the Internet, using a Yahoo! or AOL e-mail address and on top of that, leaving it on the web for anyone to use? It's like going to Amazon, hoping to find specials on 419 Scam Victims, or having a victim delivered to you on a silver tray. But is a search like this, really that far-fetched?

A couple of interesting theories came to mind when I analysed the search string.

• 419 scammers are targeting people living in the United States. Why? Perhaps they have a better success rate with Americans;
• They prefer people using the e-mail services of Yahoo! and AOL. Why? The spam filter of Yahoo! and AOL is not as effective as Gmail's and it is probably easier for scammers to get through to people who use these e-mail services. Also note that the scammer did not look for Hotmail e-mail addresses. According to 419eater.com, some scammers do not like to converse with Hotmail users; and
• They specifically target people in need of financial assistance. Why? People with severe financial problems are often desperate and will do anything to improve their financial position. 419 scammers exploit this desperation, making it easier to convince these victims.

I understand that it is hard to base solid theories on a single incident, so these are only a couple of possibilities from a personal point of view. 419 scammers send e-mails to many countries, not just America, they send e-mails to Gmail and other e-mail accounts, not just Yahoo! and AOL and they send e-mails in bulk, like a spammer with a shotgun approach, they often have no idea who the recipients would be.

What can we learn through this behaviour? Do not post your personal e-mail address in any public area on the web and do not reveal your financial status on the web. Scammers will use this to their advantage. If they have your e-mail address in their possession and at the same time know about your financial problems, then they can send you a highly targeted and convincing e-mail, putting them in the right place at the right time. I still think it was wishful thinking by the scammer to do such a narrow search, hoping to find a victim that fits this profile. However, this scammer inadvertently revealed one of their harvesting methods, so lets take the necessary precautions and make it harder for scammers to find new victims.

That’s why Google developed Google Notifier, a Mac application that can help you retrieve all the messages stored in your inbox and alert you when a new mail arrives. The application is quite useful for all Gmail users because it allows you to control your mail account directly from your desktop and avoid visiting the site multiple times.

Because the number of Google Notifier downloads is increasing every day, the company decided to publish some useful information for the Mac version, mentioning a hidden feature that can allow you to manage your account even easier.

“Pull down the Notifier menu (either Calendar or Gmail), hold down Command and Option, and click Preferences on the menu. You’ll see a hidden settings editor. Enter MaxMessagesOnMainMenu in the Key field (upper and lower case must be entered as shown) and 20 in the Value field, then click Set. Quit Notifier and start it up again. Now, when you pull down the Notifier menus, you’ll see all your Gmails and all your Calendar events listed in single menus, without any “View More” sub-menus.

If you want to get the sub-menus back, get the hidden settings editor back again, enter MaxMessagesOnMainMenu for the Key, and 4 for the Value, then click Set. Voltando, para comprovar se era - de fato - uma versão 2001, fiz um teste: pesquisei o termo "presidente Lula" no buscador e o resultado foram apenas conversas do então "apenas" candidato Lula conversando com o então presidente, Fernando Henrique Cardoso!!!

É... naquele tempo as buscas traziam resultados mais apropriados...
