Went vintage shopping with the hubby yesterday on Granville. Found ourselves very hungry at about 3, and stopped over to Roxy Burger. Got a very regular burger, very, very good. Actually ate all the fries. Was a little ashamed of myself, but would like to think my gluttony was a compliment to the chef. Not much more to say about a burger in a place mainly set up to serve club-goers stomach lining before they go to Caprice. The waitress was adorable, and was very quick on the pop-glass-uptake. Unfortunately, when drying my hands in the ladies room, the force of getting a towel out of the dispenser caused something to unpop, and the front cover, positioned perfectly at forehead level, fell open, hitting me directly on the head. Not that this is the fault of Roxy burger. I think my own innate awkwardness in toilets always cause these things to happen.

Later on, I went to The Rickshaw in Surrey. Not at all at random, as I normally do not do Surrey. I was attending a little family reunion of sorts with my fathers side of the family. Let me just say that I will never again use Google Maps to find an address several municipalities away. My Journey from Kits to Surrey took the better part of 2 hours and would appear to be designed by someone pathologically afraid of Hwy 1. At one point I crossed a WOODEN BRIDGE. And I was still very lost. What a fantastic voyage! In the end I found Hwy 1 and winged it.

It is an odd thing for someone who likes to critique restaurants to not actually eat anything at all at the restaurant in question, but I was just so full from all that Roxy burger. And I did suddenly develop a strange aversion to MSG all of a sudden. I don't know why, I normally could not have cared less. But anyway, I don't know how the food was. Who knows, I don't think you go to a place like The Rickshaw for really stellar Chinese food anyway. You to get filled up and because there is a nice back room that is good for groups. There is a time an place for everything.

I remember, may years back, going to a place in Chinatown in Edmonton. It was in the lower level of an old building, pretty inconspicuous. You had to order in Chinese, or rather the people that took us did. What came out to our table was an unending series of otherworldly Asian delights. I have never again had anything at all like it. Have all Chinese food places become havens for our deep fried, gooey, electric coloured ideal of what Chinese food is? Can anyone tell me where I can get some good noodles? Or something I've never heard of? I'm not scared of things that don't come covered in sweet and sour sauce! Do I have to be Chinese? I promise I won't be rude or embarrassing, I'll just sit down and eat what you bring me, and pay you handsomely. There, offer made.

OUBLIE TON REGIME

HEARST SUED IN MILWAUKEE.
Bill of $4

Originally published on September 7, 1908 in the New York Times

HEARST SUED IN MILWAUKEE.

Bill of $48 Incurred by a Worker in 1904 Charged to Him.

MILWAUKEE, Sept. 6. -- William Randolph Hearst, founder of the Independence Party, will come to Milwaukee again on Sept. 14, but not as a campaigner and political worker for the newly born National pary and Thomas L. Hisgen, its Presidential candidate. It will be to appear before Justice of the Peace Oscar E. Schwemer to make answer in a civil suit brought against him by William Kirchheim, a saloon keeper in the town of Granville.

Service was made upon Mr. Hearst in his rooms in the Hotel Pfister last night as he was preparing to go to Schlitz Park, where he was scheduled to make an address.

The case dates back four years, when Mr. Hearst was seeking the Democratic nomination for the Presidency. It involves $48. The plaintiff was at that time in the saloon business in Granville. J. J. McNally, who at that time represented himself as one of Hearst's workers, went to the plaintiff's salloon in Granville, and, according to the allegation, incurred a bill of $48 for refreshments and the rent of a hall for a Hearst meeting. When the meeting was over McNally refused to pay the bill, it is alleged.

Granville Richard Seymour Redmond was born on 9 March, 1871 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on 24 May, 1935 in Los Angeles.

Granville Redmond was an American Painter, born to a hearing family. Granville Redmond contracted Scarlet Fever at around 2 1/2 to the age of 3; when he recovered, he was found to be deaf. This may have prompted his family's decision to move from the East Coast to San Jose, California: the possibility for his education at the Berkeley School for the Deaf.

Granville Redmond attended the Berkeley School for the Deaf (later the California School for the Deaf) from 1879 to 1890 where his artistic talents were recognized and encouraged. There his teacher Theophilus d'Estrella taught him painting, drawing and pantomime.

When he graduated from CSD, Granville Redmond enrolled at another CSD: the California School of Design in San Francisco, where he worked for 3 years with teachers such as Arthur Matthews and Amedee Joullion. Granville Redmond famously won the W. E. Brown Medal of Excellence. Granville Redmond associated with many other artists, including Gottardo Piazzoni and Giuseppe Cadenasso. Piazzoni learned American Sign Language and he and Granville Redmond were lifelong friends. They lived together in Parkfield, California, and Tiburon.

1893 saw Granville Redmond win a scholarship from California School of the Deaf and from the School of Design, which made it possible for him to study in Paris at the Academie Julian under teachers Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. At the Academie Julian, he roomed with sculptor Douglas Tilden, famous Deaf sculptor and another graduate of the California School for the Deaf. In 1895 in Paris his painting Matin d'Hiver, was accepted for the Paris Salon.

In 1898, he returned to California and settled in Los Angeles, where he painted many beautiful beach scenes. Granville Redmond was married in 1899 to Carrie Ann Jean, a former student of the Illinois School for the Deaf. Together they had three children. It is not known if they were Deaf or could hear.

While living in Los Angeles, he became friends with Charles Chaplin, who admired the natural expressiveness of a Deaf person using American Sign Language. Charles Chaplin asked Granville Redmond to help him develop the techniques Charles Chaplin later used in his silent films. Charles Chaplin, impressed with Granville Redmond's skill gave granville Redmond a studio on the movie lot, collected his paintings, and sponsored him in silent acting roles - the sculptor in City Lights for example.

During this time Granville Redmond did not neglect his painting. Through Charles Chaplin he met Los Angeles neighbor artists Elmer Wachtel and Norman St. Clair. They showed works at the Spring Exhibition held in San Francisco in 1904. By 1905 Granville Redmond was receiving considerable recognition as a leading landscape painter and bold colorist. Granville Redmond's artwork was sometimes compared to Matisse; he loved painting flowers and dark, moody scenes.

Granville Redmond's work is in a variety of collections:

Irvine Museum, California

Laguna Art Museum, California

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Cantor Arts Center, Stanford University

De Young Museum, the Bancroft Library, San Francisco

California School for the Deaf

New York City Museum, New York

Oakland Museum, California

Granville Redmond's Awards:

Gold Medal, W. E. Brown Award, California School of Design, 1891

Medal, Louisiana Purchase Exposition, 1904

Silver Medal, Alaska-Yukon Pacific Exposition, Seattle, Washington, 1909

It was China's turn to showcase its pyrotechnic skills last night, at the HSBC Celebration of Light. After seeing a few interesting pictures on the Net that were taken from Granville Bridge, I decided to try my luck there also. Although I was much further from the action than usual, I still had a great time (from a hobbyist photographer's point of view anyway).

Ale e Paolo in compagnia dell'italoamericana Daniela.

..Leaving Vancouver Never easy...

Ps.

Ieri.

Fame, direzione Scienze World.

Potevo perdermi the dark knight?ovviamente no, cosi cinema, e sorprendentemente si capisce.

Oggi.

Have a nice day!

If you are looking for some inspiration and ideas on greener and sustainable living, the Granville:

If you are looking for some inspiration and ideas on greener and sustainable living, the Granville: Sustainable City Living magazine may be an interesting read for you. Granville is a fairly new magazine, its premier issue debuted last summer.

The magazine is full of resources and information for those wanting to live a shade greener. Some hot topics have included: sustainable seafood, chemicals in cleaning products, and local green clothing designers. Along with feature stories on everything from eco-travel to green renos; there are columns written by various authors and journalists; inside scoop on events, fashion, food with a green twist; and practical tips for a greener lifestyle.

But what I enjoy best is that Granville is local, making it very relevant and practical for us Vancouverites. The added bonus? The subscription, which comes out quarterly, is free so far for those living in Canada. If you rather not have more paper products to clutter your home, you can opt to subscribe to their monthly eNewsletter. Though the content is not exactly the same as what is found in the magazine, it will still make for an interesting and informative read.

I am not a religious person, so I think Granville, Ohio on the 4th of July is as close to a pilgrima

I am not a religious person, so I think Granville, Ohio on the 4th of July is as close to a pilgrimage as I will ever have. Granville on the 4th is bigger than religion, in fact, because it is something everyone can agree on. No one who was raised in Granville would dispute that it is ultimate destination for a slice of Americana on America's most American day. Parades with local politicians, tilt-a-whirls, barbecues, and even decorated dogs beckon patriotic revelers, as Granville hosts its annual competition celebrating the most star-spangled pooch.

Nights in Granville are dedicated to getting wasted enough to hit on your high school crush in the local bar, Brews Cafe. This particular 4th of July was the 5th year reunion for my high school class, an event I'd been planning for a couple of months. Contrary to any anxieties I'd had, the reunion went off brilliantly. I wish John Hughes could have seen the nerds, jocks, and theater geeks all conversing over cheap beer and pizza. All of this was, of course, in thanks to the spirit of the 4th of July in Granville, which mends any ill feelings or longstanding grudges. We all seemed to have forgotten about cliques and social coteries just for those few hours. Upon further investigation of my pictures, however, I was really pleased to find that I'd spent the majority of the evening with the popular girls. Finally! Here are some of the candids from that night: [gallery]
