These are eight speed charts that compare some grace speed graphs we have been looking at over the past ten days. All eight charts above are comparison of the same 5 songs with meanspeeds between 70-76 bpm, meanemotion=grace.
Yes, a whole "movement" of DJ's sampling beats of similar speeds thrives--to some this has become a religion--and as you readers know: it's the DJ's out there who like my work a lot--the musicians aren't so keen on it yet. There is some [master DJ "mouse" out there]--a world I only mention because I get many people who ask me: am I counting beats for that movement??? Answer: No. I just have an obsessive curiosity as to speed and what it is doing in a song. Breakfast In America by Supertramp is compared, and for me explained, as Hey Jude By The Beatles.
Given just these five songs with the mean-emotion of grace--I wish I had a system i my house where I could play these all at once--because although they all have the same general underlying pulse--they sound so different. A Very Good Year by the Chairman Of The Board, from Hoboken, New Jersey, Frank Sinatra "sounds" slower, Bad Day by Daniel Powter and El Malecon by Orchestra Harlow sound faster. If a [mishmasher DJ] makes a song out of this, I'd love to hear it!

(Quelle: Kurier)

Back when life was a rollercoaster ride of intense emotion and deep and meaningful poetry was the only means of expression; when only the headiest of philosophical thought could be turned to for either some kind of demented solace or an excruciating attempt to explain my general state of headfuck...
...one day back then I was particularly headfucked. And broken-hearted too.
Throw unrequited love in the mix and it's proper fun and games time.

I decided to seek out the dingiest bar I could find and drink my problems away - all romantic and idealistic and all like in the movies and all, like.

I stewed myself into drinks for quite some time, staring vacantly across the cosmos - the one beyond the stained wall in front of me, contemplating the true meaning of the songs I was hearing - especially 'Hey Jude', and not so much 'Super Trouper'... before this mad fucker of a drunk engaged me in conversation. I spoke of love-loss and the meaning of existence and the purpose of life and the significance of the cosmos, metaphysics and confusion, misanthropy and realism, existentialism and
-"cushtard!"

He laid on the best damn advice he could dream up out of his twisted-drunk brain, and it's the best damn advice I ever got.
"Whin yer tinkin all hevvy and tha' like y'ar now an' all juzz say 'cushtard!'. Just!.. SAY... CUSHTERD! ... ah haw, haw, haw! Ah jayz. Fuggen' cushtard, ya know? Djeh knorra meen? Djeh?!"

I knew, and I smiled thankfully at the auld bum.
A word from the wise - just say 'custard'.

[caption id="attachment_211" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="The picture sleeve of the British release of the historic 45 single released on August 30, 1968"][/caption]

It was (40!) years ago today that the Beatles issued their first release on their own Apple record label in Britain, a 45 single, Hey Jude with Revolution on the B Side (or were they both A sides?). (Yes, the USA version was issued on August 26 but it didn’t have a cool picture sleeve that is seen here, the USA 45 single releases, for a period, had no picture sleeves, just the new Apple logo.)

It was a huge, huge hit for the Beatles that eventually became the biggest-selling debut release for any record company. It has been estimated that the single sold over eight million copies worldwide. It was the number one song in 11 countries.

Here in the USA Hey Jude remained in the number one position on the Billboard charts for nine consecutive weeks (September 28 – November 23). Another unusual element about the record was it shattered the standard 3-minute limit radio stations almost demanded in a song, clocking in at seven minutes and 11 seconds. It was recorded on July 30, 1968 during the Beatles’ White Album recording sessions at EMI Studio 2 although the band chose not to put it on the double disc set.

Something else that was unusual was the flipside, Revolution, was being flipped over and played by radio DJs and it was charted at number two in the Record World charts.

So what’s the big deal about this particular single? It was the song played (several times) at a school dance (in Apple Creek, Ohio) I attended that year where I slow danced with a girl (actually two) for the first time. At that dance I recall ‘slow’ dancing with Denise and Brenda (I was still in grade school and nervous) although as the song played on I got more ‘comfortable’ to the point that a teacher walked up to Denise and I and decreed we stand apart a bit more (we were getting a bit….too close….).

5 songs:

hey jude - the beatles (7:03)

23 - jimmy eat world (7:15)

free bird und tuesday's gone - lynyrd skynyrd (9:09 bzw. 7:31)

will you be there - michael jackson (7:40)

the prodigal son suite - keith green (12:21)

Boyo really knocked us on our arses on this one...

He got out of the shower last night and was parading around in search of his skivvies singing
"Na na na na-na-na- NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH"

and then what I thought was "Hey Jude"...

Today he informed me that Hey Jude was not a nice song. He further explained that it was not a good thing to say and that was why the song was "sad" (you know, "take a sad song..."

A little clarification (and of course a brief video for the archives) from the baldguy later and I found out what boy was talking about....

He thinks the song is "I hate you."

I dook you not.

It's times like these where I am grateful that after almost 33 years of training I can finally muster the strength to leave the room and get a bit more away from his fragile, 4 year old self-esteem to laugh until the tears come...

“Hey Jude don’t make it bad”.

Solo hace falta escucharla. Y ya sabes: “Take a sad song and make it better”.

As Pastor Byron concluded the series hey Jude this past Sunday, we read from Jude 17 through the end

As Pastor Byron concluded the series hey Jude this past Sunday, we read from Jude 17 through the end of the book. Though this is only about eight verses we could have seriously talked about all that it said for several more weeks. I honestly got so much out of it, too much to blog about, but I feel like I should share how God spoke to me through verse 23.

Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Jude 23a

This week Travis and I have had the privilege of taking the youth of C3 (Crave) to this camp called Big Stuff, and God is doing some incredible things in their lives. It’s so amazing to see how much they are opening up and asking questions and truly desiring to know God more.

In one of the sessions a guy named Reggie told a story about how one day he came home to find that his six-year-old daughter had taken the dog out and had gone missing. The dog was still there but his daughter was nowhere to be found. Now Reggie has five kids and he could of just said, “Oh our six-year-old is missing? That’s ok, I have four others.” How insane would it be for him to think like that? That would be crazy!!! So they searched their apartment complex for about two hours going door to door with a picture frantically trying to find her, and that is the same way that God fills about His lost children. As Christians we are called to be God’s hands and feet, to be in constant communication with Him so that we can do what He tells us to do.

And just to let you know Reggie found his daughter in one of the last apartments that he approached. His daughter, while taking the dog out, started playing with another little girl and followed her into her parent’s apartment.

Pastor Byron also used this verse:
Keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry that God has given you. 2 Timothy 4:5

Our ministry is to tell others the Good News about Jesus Christ. There will be suffering and we will have to work at it but this is what we must do in order to carry out the ministry that God has given us. It sounds kind of rough but I can honestly say that living for Christ is the most fulfilling decisions that I have ever made in my life.

Be merciful to those who doubt... - Jude 22

Amy Winehouse is in the news again. It's been a quite a saga for one of the most talented musicians we've seen in the last decade. There's been drinking and drug abuse, rehab centers, hospital stays, among many other indiscretions. At first glance, I get easily frustrated when such an incredible talent is choosing to throw her life away. I can quickly fall into an attitude of judgement and begin mocking celebrities that destroy their future.

But here's what I wonder? I wonder about Amy's background? I wonder what's leading her to this life of addiction? I wonder if there's a Christ-follower in her life choosing to be merciful? I wonder if someone is praying for her? I wonder if someone has built a relationship where they can speak some much needed truth in her life?

Jude closes the book by commanding us to "be merciful," while at the same time being careful not to let the sins of others infiltrate our lives. It's easy for me to speak about Amy Winehouse when she's a continent away, but who in your life needs someone to "be merciful?"

The great “Beatles versus Rolling Stones” argument is a little unfair: the Beatles quit

The great "Beatles versus Rolling Stones" argument is a little unfair: the Beatles quit while they were ahead while the Stones became a bloated arena rock dinosaur, so the hindsight comparison is somewhat skewed. Admittedly, a few months ago I would've said Beatles are hundreds of times better than the Stones, but after immersing myself in the Stones early albums and learning to look past the leathery face of Keith Richards and the present day Stones, I think I've changed my mind.

Partly, this is because I've realized that the Beatles/Stones debate is about more than music; it's about your basic philosophy, your outlook on life. The Beatles, of course, are emblematic of that kind of peace, love, and understanding that we always associate with the 60s; as George sings on "Within You, Without You:" "With our love, we could save the world/If they only knew." For the Beatles, the future's out there for our taking, if we can just embrace love and open our minds (with a little help from our friends THC and LSD, if necessary). You never get the feeling that the Beatles are being less than sincere; theirs is ultimately a hopeful vision, reinforced by the music: bursting with life, well-considered and thought out, and experimental but still poppy and rooted in something deeply familiar.

At first, the Stones don't seem to have a comparably unified vision, but that's the trick: their lack of vision IS the vision. Bill Janovitz at allmusic explains it better:

While flirting with ideas of revolution and flower power, usually those moments seemed to be exploitations, as in "Gimme Shelter." Jagger and company never seemed to fully embrace any cause or politics. Rather, they remained aloof, choosing instead to pose as characters. While the Stones obviously felt their music deeply and performed in with authenticity, the listener rarely gets the idea that the lyrics are confessional or even directly autobiographical, which was a divergence from most pop music of the era.

The Stones had the advantage of peaking a few years later than the Beatles and seeing that their revolution failed. Mick's detachedness and the looseness of the Stones's playing (as compared to the Beatles's technical masterpieces and studio wizardry of George Martin) are a result of this, an expression of the cynical attitude that stands opposed to the Beatles's brand of optimism. Mick compares himself to the Devil on "Sympathy for the Devil," but he's more of an Antichrist (the Beatles were "bigger than Jesus"), the opposite of the Beatles's "love can save us" shtick.

To examine this further, let's take a look at one of my favorite Stones songs: "Salt of the Earth," the last track on 1968's Beggars Banquet. At first glance, this song seems to be a straightforward paen to the working man: "Let's drink to the hard working people/Let's drink to the lowly of birth." Mick and Keith continue singing about the hard working people until the key change in the middle of the song, when it drastically changes tone: "And when I search the faceless crowd/A swirling mass of gray and black and white/They don't look real to me/In fact, they look so strange."

After this, it's clear that the song is ironic. The Stones never suggest any way to help the hard working people they just want to get fucked up on their behalf. The song builds to a choral climax, but it's clearly tongue in cheek, like a parody of "Hey Jude" and the like. As Mick Jagger has said of the song an interview, the lyrics are "total cynicism. I'm saying those people haven't any power and they never will have."

The idea of taking a drink for the salt of the earth points towards the Stones's attitude towards drugs, which also embraces this "total cynicism." Where the Beatles were dropping acid to change the world, the Stones were doing drugs to escape it; as Mick sings on another one of my favorites, "Dead Flowers:" "When you're sitting back/In your rose pink Cadillac/Making bets on Kentucky Derby day/I'll be in my basement room/With a needle and a spoon/And another girl to take my pain away." Their choice of drugs is telling as well: where the Beatles were using mind expanders like weed and acid, the Stones were into heroin, morphine, and pretty much anything else that would dull pain and emotions, not heighten them.

This is ultimately sort of depressing, as the world-weariness of the drug songs (which is all of them) on Sticky Fingers attest to, but it's really the only alternative to the monumental failure of the Beatles's positive outlook and the insufficiency of love and peace and understanding and all that shit in the world. I think I bought the Beatles's thing for a while, but I'm at a point in my life where I can no longer take that stuff seriously, so I've got to go with the Stones. Or at least at a point in my life where I can read waaay too much into pop music. Fuck it all, let's forget it and take a drink for the salt of the earth:

This week we’re up in Daytona Beach with some of our Crave students for Big Stuf Student Camps. Even though we’re only about a day and a half into the camp, it has been amazing what God has been doing. One of the main themes of camp is to help our students grow in their relationship with Christ or to become stronger “followers” of Christ. In Jesus’ time there were people who were professional “followers.” We know them as disciples. They were usually young men whose job was to follow a rabbi and learn everything they could from that rabbi. Naturally, over time the young men would begin to sound like, act like, even dress like their rabbi. It was easy to tell which young men followed which rabbi because of how they acted. Of course, the connection is that the more we become stronger followers of Christ then the more we should become like Christ. I think this is exactly what Jude had in mind when he wrote, “but you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith.” It was the idea that if I’m truly following Christ then I’m growing each day and becoming more like the one I’m following. There is another aspect of being a follower. The very essence of the word follower means to go where someone leads. If I’m a follower of Christ then I must be willing to go where he goes. As you examine Christ you see that He was all about connecting people to God. He would specifically go and build relationships (i.e. ate with sinners and tax collectors in Luke 5:27-32) to intentionally draw people to himself. Again Jude shows us this aspect of being a follower in verse 23 when he says “snatch others from the fire and save them:” If we are truly going to understand the heartbeat of God then we must begin to invest in relationships with others to earn the right to invite them to church and ultimately to a relationship with Christ.

So as we wrap up this Hey Jude series I’m left with this thought: if I am a Christ follower then I should be asking myself each day, “How am I growing in my faith and am I investing in and inviting others?”
