Following six months of battling with writers' cramp, writers' block and most other scribing ailments, I finally managed to send in the draft first manuscript of my next book Storm Force at the end of April. The publishers (Authentic Media) had given me a deadline in May, so I was glad to beat it, even if only by a couple of short weeks. What a relief! Despite the feeling that I was sending off my third-born child to a complete stranger, and the misgivings about what the editor will do to my precious work when she gets hold of it, I was elated at the development. I made certain decisions then which I think were important:

Go on holiday straight away - as far away as possible!

Take neither mobile phone nor laptop with you

Avoid all serious reading - read rubbish!

Get into nature - the sea, the mountains and lakes, fresh air

Don't worry about it! That will all come later.

Stay off the bottle - you know it really makes sense

Now I am just waiting for that awful moment known as 'the editor's first report' when I probably will hit the bottle big time!

Now, for a special year... a great cake is in order. I happen to know that my Mom's favorite flavor is Irish Creme. So, I went to Konditer Meister - the cake experts. The created a golden cake with chocolate mousse filling laced with Irish Creme. It was divine. The real bonus is it looks at wonderful as it tastes. They wrap the cake in a ribbon color of your choosing and decorate with butter cream roses on top! Mom was really impressed! Check out their site for more info:

Just a quick post: in Yokohama now, heading to Osaka tomorrow morning.

Everybody loves Japan, yes? I am no exception. I wish I could stay here forever, but we all know that's not possible. However I thoroughly indulged my fangirl self ogling cute boys everywhere (and the girls are so pretty) including random Kanjani8 Nissin Cup Noodle advertisements in the subway, caved in and bought two KAT-TUN DVDs (haha did you know Johnny's Entertainment has their own separate section in HMV?) and a magazine (the one where the photo below appears) while my boyfriend dragged me all across Harajuku and Shibuya shopping and looking for his weird obscure underground shops. Oh, and he bought about half of Uniqlo as well. Also, I have overheard more conversations about the merits of Akanishi vs Kamenashi vs random Japanese celebrity from girls with their boyfriends than I can count. Starbucks is freaking everywhere.

Today was good: Yokohama is a pretty place. Pictures when I come back; the night lights are beautiful. I've also sat more rollercoasters than I can count, including the ones in Disneyland (the parade was magical omg, but I got sunburnt haha) and some random super drop rollercoaster in Yokohama today, in a free theme park no less!

Lots of food. Ate orgasmic sushi at Tsukiji it's like food porn. Really can die.　And my Japanese is super bad it's so embarrassing.

More when I get internet again.

When to Go

The dry winter months (May to October) are the most comfortable for travelling, but you'll miss the green landscapes that characterise the hotter and wetter summer season (November to April). In winter, night-time temperatures can fall below freezing but the days are best for wildlife viewing because animals tend to concentrate close to water holes and are therefore easily observed. National parks are most crowded during South African school holidays, so to avoid the throngs, avoid mid-April to mid-May and mid-July to mid-September. There's a secondary rush around the Namibian school holidays in December and early January.

Weather
As most of Zimbabwe sits on highveld (high grassland) and middleveld (lower altitude grassland) plateaus, the tropical conditions normally associated with this region of Africa are tempered - except in the lowland regions. It's never particularly hot, most of the time climbing from cool nights to around 25°C (77°F) during the day. Temperatures are higher from November to April during summer and lower from May to October in winter. The mid-year dry season peaks around August with a very pleasant balance of sunshine, heat and humidity.

Getting There
Most international flights arrive in Harare. If you're already in southern Africa, there are frequent services between Johannesburg (and plenty of other Southern African cities) and Harare and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. Air Zimbabwe offers services throughout regional Africa and to major cities in Europe.Popular land borders include the Victoria Falls/Kazungala crossing between Zimbabwe and Botswana (from where you can continue through Chobe National Park to Namibia), the Victoria Falls/Livingstone crossing to Zambia, and the road and rail links to South Africa via Beitbridge. To Mozambique (and Malawi), the route is from Harare to Blantyre via the Nyamapanda and Mwanza border crossings. Daily buses run this route.

Getting Around

Currently, Air Zimbabwe only connects Harare and Bulawayo and Harare with Victoria Falls due to lack of demand and fuel. Sometimes, combined flight and accommodation deals are available for the price of the air ticket, so it's worth making inquiries. There are two types of buses - express and local. Most foreigners use scheduled express coaches to travel between major tourist spots, but the local buses are often just as quick, and will almost always be cheaper. There aren't any schedules for local buses and they run only from early morning to late afternoon, departing from the 'African township' bus stations, which are never in the town centre. It's also quite common to strike a deal with a truck driver for intercity transport. Car rental in Zimbabwe is expensive, especially 4WD, and the vehicles are not generally well-maintained.Cyclists will be happy to know that most roads are surfaced and in fair repair, and winds are rarely strong enough to make cycling difficult. Although distances between towns are long by European standards, they're generally only a day's ride apart and there are plenty of small stores between towns where you can stop for refreshment. Zimbabwe's railway network connects Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Victoria Falls. Trains are very slow, and not particularly safe. All major services travel at night, and sleeping compartments with bedding are available but watch your belongings. There is a ferry service on Lake Kariba, connecting Kariba with Mlibizi, which is handy if you want to do a circular tour of Zimbabwe without retracing your steps between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo. The ferry departs when there is sufficient demand.

Last weekend was a holiday weekend in Hong Kong. Not in China PRC, but just Hong Kong. It was Buddha

Last weekend was a holiday weekend in Hong Kong. Not in China PRC, but just Hong Kong. It was Buddha's birthday on the 12th of May and so I had the day off. It was great. I decided to also take a total break from the internet, so, as of Saturday evening I did not touch my laptop. This means that I am totally cut off from my main form of communication and, it turns out, information. The weekend was decent all around, I went to the beach on Sunday though the weather was less than ideal and I had some friends around and made Mexican food on Monday [you have no idea how impossible it is to find margarita ingredients over here... pitiful, no wonder margaritas are always so awful when you get them in a bar.] By the time I returned to work and the rest of the world on Tuesday some big things had happened.

There was a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province in the PRC. I had no idea about this because of my self-imposed cyber-denial and when I logged on finally around midday on Tuesday the 13th I was amazed at what I saw. First, I received a huge number of emails inquiring after my own safety, which was very kind... we felt nothing in Hong Kong, though the 7.9 quake was reported to have been felt in places as far away from the epicenter as Bangkok and Shanghai. Second, the reports of the catastrophe were amazing: the first [state mandated] news report indicated indicated that three people had perished. Within the hour it was over 5,000. Because the PRC does not celebrate/recognize Buddha's birthday, Monday the 12th of May was a workday. Everyone was at school and work when the quake hit at midday. This has exacerbated the disaster exponentially.

Less than a week later, the death toll is over 22,000 and predicted to surpass 50,000; and the pictures have been some of the most horrific I have ever seen [definitely rivaling the truly tasteless New York Post photo of the jumper on 9/11]. While I have come to expect this from the Chinese papers who post photogs at the hospitals to jump on incoming ambulances, I have been startled to see the images in the major English newspapers.

Less startling has been the Chinese spin on the disaster:

"China will conquer the earthquake catastrophe and reduce the lose to the minimum extent, with the leadership of the central government and the efforts of soldiers" says legislator Wu Bangguo.

Conquer it??

"All should continue to work tirelessly and continuously to combat the disaster and minimize the loss" said Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao at their meeting in Sichuan.

"The rescue work is moving in a capable, orderly, and effective way," continued Wu. Hu continued here, the rhetoric is familiar.

It all just makes me think about China's priorities. Image la! It is all about image.

While it appears that there is more transparency than normal in the news regarding this disaster (until three years ago death tolls from natural disasters were considered state secrets) the news still smacks of a state that is so insecure of it's status and reputation in the world that they inadvertently undermine their attempts to achieve the status they so desire. This article describes a common side-effect of China's state-run news system... faced with no news, people make up their own. [This of course, is a large part of the problem with external interpretations of Chinese policy (which the Chinese deny) though I doubt Xinhua sees it this way...] Some choice statements from the government include:

"Believe only what we say."

"Strike hard in accordance with the law at this kind of [rumor-mongering] behavior which seeks only chaos in the world."

It should be noted that Xinhua reported that seventeen "Malicious rumormongers" have been appropriately punished for spreading "false information, sensational statements and snapping public confidence."

Well, good.

For a long time I have been keenly interested in "The China Phenomenon." China has made the cover of Time, Newsweek, The Economist, National Geographic, just to name a few in the recent weeks. Also, of course, there has been unending scrutiny of China regarding the Olympic torch relay and the Tibet crisis, which China assures us is a domestic issue, having nothing to do with anyone outside of China and so we should just all zip it.

There was so much talk about how China was going to be, like, the second coming- a whole new world order.

Then I went to China.

The best way I can describe my opinion of China is through an adolescent metaphor: China is like the kid who is trying so hard to be the 'cool' kid that they end up being the epitome of UNcool. If they want to find themselves, as they say, "rightly" in the center of world affairs (see The Economist, May 3) they need to 'be cool.' You know, like adopt that attitude that Mike Dimone describes in Fast Times at Ridgemont High: "Yeah! The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude."

Be cool.

Their control freakery (and I say this as an admitted control freak, though without ambitions of world domination) serves only to make them look like the nut jobs so many portray them as. [Of course, by the pronoun 'they' please understand it is the State to which I am referring...] Believing they are being slighted at every moment only promotes an inferiority complex and this is not the way forward if you want the world to believe you are 'The Shit.' Amazingly, the Soviets were able to capitalize on this attitude for much of the Cold War as they put up a facade worthy of the full attention of the entire Western world. And I would say China has got it all over on the Cold War Soviets, (not that that is saying a tremendous amount, but hey, work with it.) In fact China has all kinds of reasons to chill in the comparative eyes of the world... I mean they have got pure crazy to the east in Kim Jong Il, Burma - oh, excuse me, Myanmar - refusing aid to the south, post-communism going wrong all around... But still, they maintain their defensive and paranoid stance.

Regarding Tibet, in the words of Chili Palmer, they are "trying to tell [us] [they] fucked up without sounding stupid, and that's hard to do." But actually they are trying to so wit without admitting they fucked up and that is even more difficult.

So desperate to demonstrate that they are The Future, China buries anything that could be construed as dissension. It seems like they have the chance to actually do what they say they want to do/are doing if they just relax a bit and let the pieces of a world desperate to keep China involved commercially and culturally fall where they may.

Like Chili said, "If you're important, people will wait."

Desolation Sound is an ocean inlet found at British Columbia, Canada. The waters that is in the inlet come from the deep-water glaciers. There are several individuals who would go sailing in Desolation Sound just to visit the fjords and the mountains.

The whole area is a large marine park. Besides the mountain ranges, you can also find cascading waterfalls. The freshwater also breeds several species of fish, which would be perfect for some sport fishing. One of the most frequented anchorages is the Prideaux Haven. It's a small bay that's filled with lots of coves, passageways, and islands. The Laura and Melanie coves are normally filled with several boats of people who wish to explore the area. It's also an excellent point to venture to other locations, such as Saltery Bay Provincial Park and Okeover Arm Provincial Park. You can enjoy some private relaxation at Powell River.

The water's current flow so fast and the channel can be twisting and narrow. There are seven major islands that compose it, all of which are composed of the wilderness. Thus, if you aren't too comfortable with limited amenities, you may want to forego mountain trailing. A wildlife preservation park, Copeland Islands is a home to numerous animals like sea lions, porpoises, and deer.

Sailing in Desolation Sound should include a trip to Toba Inlet. If you're not in a yacht, you can visit the place through water taxis and floatplanes. There, you can take a good swim or drink the waters of Alpine Creek. The water comes from the glacier. You could also move to Discovery Islands, one of the 4500 islands that protect the coastline of BC, or to Walsh Cove Provincial Marine Park. It's a small sheltered anchorage on the eastern part of the island of West Redonda.

Find more information on sailing in Desolation Sound and sailing Croatia here. In this website you can find information on sailing charter from other parts of the world.

I slept in this morning. It is a cold wet winter day here. The weather gods are reminding us what winter will be like, but I am hoping that we will have some more nice balmy autumn weather before the winter gods settle in for four or five months.

There was no need to get up into the cold, so I deliciously snuggled up in bed with my coffee, books and laptop. How decadent is that? So rare to have a real sleep in and be lazy about actually getting out of bed. Tomorrow I will start organising my days a bit better, but for now, I sure am feeling a lot more relaxed.

I have been aching for some Red Lentil Garlic Soup for a while now, so today was a good opportunity to make that, and to make a large batch so that I can put some in the freezer for those cold nights coming home late without an ounce of energy for the kitchen stove. This is a bit famous in our household, a recipe that we have used over the years (since 1997), and laugh about the garlickiness of it. But don't skimp on the garlic. It is worth every clove. Just make sure your partner eats some too.

I like to make this with red lentils (masoor dal) but did not quite have enough. I supplemented them with mung dal and it was just as good.

That just about sums up my Friday evening thus far. Other than some reading time. And, you know, breathing and all of that jazz.

Plastic bag yarn portion- I have wanted to do this for a while, and I did so today. Actually, I still am doing it- I just stopped in order to write this post. Making yarn out of grocery store bags, that is. I have a nice-sized ball of plastic bag yarn already, and only three bags have been transformed. Ah, transformed, such a magnificent way to describe the meticulous task. I love to transform things, and will most likely be knitting this particular transformation into a bag. If it is strong enough, I will use it to carry books back and forth from the library.

Leftover pizza- this, too, is self-explanatory. My mother is out for a knitting night with her friends (which she does every Friday night) and my father did not feel like cooking anything special, so we just had leftovers. I had white pizza. Delicious white pizza, that is.

Temporarily knowing a word that my older brother does not- yeah, this is probably the most self-explanatory of the three. Essentially, I told my brother that one of the words of the day is hypnophobia and I asked him whether he knew what it meant. Naturally, being the cocky, stubborn college student he occasionally is, he said he did. After a lot of prying, I found out that he did not, in fact, know what it meant. He guessed for a bit, and finally I told him. I will tell you all what it means in a few moments, along with the other things of the day.

And here I am, as promised, telling you the things of the day. The words of the day are hypnophobia (as mentioned- it is a morbid fear of falling asleep) and gormless (lacking intelligence or vitality). The number of the day is ninety-four, the holidays are Love a Tree Day, National Bike To Work Day, National Sea Monkey Day, and Wear Purple For Peace Day. I actually saw quite a few people wearing purple today, but I do not think the majority were actually celebrating it. Perhaps my friend Laura was- she was wearing purple socks, but I did not think to ask. Speaking of Laura, her dad has been offered a job and she may be moving to Chicago. I really, really, hope that she does not end up moving. This would tear me to pieces. I am trying not to think about it and become even further upset... Anyway, the color of the day is aquamarine. Wallie was thrilled about this as, evidently, it is his birthstone. I was equally thrilled because it is a rather lovely color.

Today in English, we were reading a poem aloud. The last line was something like, "I shall love, until life renews," or something of the sort. Well, the person started it and said, "I shall love," when, suddenly, there was a sound at the window. Everybody looked over, and a bird was falling right past the window. Mr. Schoder just goes, "continue the poem," in that monotonous voice of his, and the person finishes, "...until life renews." And, suddenly, the noise is there again and we all turn to the window once more. A second bird is falling fact first down right by our classroom window. I have no idea what happened to them. It was funny, in a morbid sort of way.

My siblings are watching Toy Story. Oh, how I love Toy Story.

Hey, did you know that (according to the Completely Useless, Yet Interesting, Facts Collection), "An apple, onion, and potato all have the same taste. The differences in flavor are caused by their smell. To prove this - pinch your nose and take a bite from each. They will all taste sweet." I will most definitely need to test this out.

Also according to the Completely Useless, Yet Interesting, Facts Collection, there are two million different combinations of sandwiches that can be made from the Subway menu. Now, that is very interesting. Think of all of the possibilities! Oh, wait, you can not comprehend the idea of two million different sandwiches. Neither can I.

Now, I am off to finish making plastic bag yarn- there are many more bags and I would like to make a lot of it to start off with.

Good night, friends. Farewell, friends. Be merry, friends. And otherwise.

That's right! It's trailer time again! We're heading to the Great Ontario North (well...the Great Ontario Central) for our first trip of the year. And also our last trip as a threesome (sorry, Bosco, foursome).

So wish us luck that we get at least a little bit of sleep (Eirinn will be sleeping in our bed for the first time ever), that the mosquitoes aren't too hungry, that Eirinn doesn't fall over the edge of the boat while fishing, that the rain stays away, and that this baby doesn't fall out.

Have a good weekend!

This week-end is the traditional start of summer activities in Canada. Fondly known as the 2-4 week-

This week-end is the traditional start of summer activities in Canada. Fondly known as the 2-4 week-end (there is, of course, a beer reference in there), the May long week-end, and the Victoria Day long week-end; it is celebrated on the third week-end of May. It was created to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday which was on May 24th (I know that is next week-end this year, but that's the way it goes).

People plant this week-end, camp this week-end, sail this week-end, spring clean this week-end, and generally enjoy shaking off winter. This year winter seemed to hang on until the bitter end (like, until Wednesday) but today it is 20 degrees and the sun is shining!!

The May long week-end is also my favourite week-end because we got married on the long week-end, 13 years ago. And it was a gorgeous sunny day then, too!

So to my Canadian friends, have a great long week-end! I'll let you know how ours panned out on the other side.

Homemade gifts are always an excellent choice when trying to decide what the perfect present would

Homemade gifts are always an excellent choice when trying to decide what the perfect present would be for your relatives, especially mom and dad. WIth Father's Day coming up, really surprise him this year by showing off your creative side and making him a homemade gift.

Bookmarks

If your dad loves to read and is always "dog-earing" his pages, for father's day you can make him a bookmark. This bookmark can be personalized to say whatever you would like. If he has a favorite saying you can put that on there. If your dad enjoys cooking or baking you could also put a copy of his favorite recipe on the bookmark.

Coupon Books

I think these are cute and a great way to celebrate dad on father's day. They are also perfect if your dad likes it when you help him around the house, with these coupons he will be able to get you to help him anytime he needs it. You can personalize them any way you would like, and they also give step by step instructions on how to make them after you have personalized and printed them. A helpful tip: print out the project on scrap paper first to make sure everything is correct.

Message Cards

A really cute homemade gift for father's day are message cards. They are unique because you can create any kind of message that you want to appear on these cards. I think it's nice to put a family story on them, one the entire family knows and loves to hear over and over again. Once you have personalized it and printed it out, purchase a frame to put the message card in. If you really want to show off your creativity, you can decorate the frame with quotes and sayings centered around your dad.

Frame Mats

These are perfect gifts to make if you want your gift for father's day to be more on the sentimental side. You can add handprints and a personalized message on these frame mats. These become the perfect keepsakes and the handprints are adorable. You can also upload a picture of the child to go on the mat with their handprints. This also makes for a fun paint craft with the kids when you are placing the handprints on the mats.

Iron-Ons

These iron-on's can transfer to almost any fabric. You can upload a picture to the website and add it to a template. Then you can print it out on special paper and attach the picture to things like an apron, cavas tote, t-shirt, shorts, and alot of other fabric items! These are a perfect gift for dad or grandpa that they can show off to everyone!

Have fun creating your masterpiece for dad this year and don't forget to send him a card to remind him just how special he is on father's day!

Holiday Highlights: It was once suggested that while there's no place like home for the holidays, the next best place on the planet may be Walt Disney World Resort. The good news is that guests don't have to choose: They can experience the sparkling decorations and joyous seasonal entertainment throughout the Vacation Kingdom and still be home for Christmas, because the festivities begin weeks before December 25. Here's a sampling of what's in store:

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights -- As "snow" falls overhead, the Streets of America backlot cityscape at Disney's Hollywood Studios comes alive with millions of holiday lights that dance to music, animating sparkling displays to create twirling carousels, marching toy soldiers and even Santa and his reindeer taking flight. The synchronized music and light show is presented in collaboration with famed Arkansas businessman Jennings Osborne, who developed the dazzling display for his daughter more than a decade ago at his Little Rock, Ark., home. The spectacle is included with Disney's Hollywood Studios admission.

Holidays Around the World / Candlelight Processional -- An Epcot tradition continues with holiday customs from around the globe, international storytellers, a nightly tree-lighting ceremony featuring Disney characters, a stunning display of snow-white and colored lights, and Candlelight Processional. A beloved Disney tradition that began long before Epcot, Candlelight Processional features celebrity guest narrators accompanied by a mass choir and 50-piece orchestra for a retelling of the Christmas story. All of the Epcot holiday fun is included with regular theme park admission.

Castle Dream Lights -- A dazzling lighting spectacle transforms the iconic Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom into a glimmering, shimmering ice palace at holiday time. Bathed in more than 200,000 tiny white lights, the castle glows and glistens nightly. It's all a fulfillment of Cinderella's holiday wish, as guests learn during a special show that climaxes with the transformation of the famous Magic Kingdom icon.

Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade -- A Disney's Animal Kingdom tradition, the procession results from Mickey Mouse's invitation to a special group of friends to join him on a holiday adventure. The parade is filled with gaiety -- the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings of the season. Mickey and his friends are no exception. They've added holiday accessories to their safari costumes. Add in some special music and you have a combination that celebrates the holidays as only Disney's Animal Kingdom can.

The holiday fun begins as early as Nov. 10 with the first Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, which will showcase the Castle Dream Lights. Disney park officials are currently checking in with Santa's elves to find out when they'll have everything else ready to meet and treat Walt Disney World guests. Specific information will be available at www.disneyworld.com/holidays or from vacation planners at 407/W-DISNEY.

Millions of people across the world are currently thinking of ways in which they can help to secure

Millions of people across the world are currently thinking of ways in which they can help to secure their futures. Whether this is for when they are married with children or for when they are planning retirement, everyone wants to know that they have something they can fall back on one day.

Investments are the most logical and sensible way that planning for your future can be done. Of course there is always a risk that you might not get any return on your investments but if you plan wisely then you could end up making a fortune.

Investment property is something that people have caught onto because it is a great way of making large amounts of money. People are always going to want to go on holiday and therefore there is always going to be a demand for holiday homes. Not only does this mean that property is a pretty safe investment but houses abroad normally tend to be a lot cheaper than they are in the United Kingdom.

A lot of European countries are up and coming holiday destinations which provides plenty of opportunities when it comes to investment property. If you find a country that is relatively undiscovered but has potential to be very popular with tourists then you are bound to find yourself a bargain. This means that as the destination becomes more and more popular with holiday makers house prices are going to rise over the next few years. As a result of this, when it comes to selling your investment property you are set to make a substantial amount of profit.

Up and coming tourist spots are great places to buy investment property because as they become more popular more developments will be made in the area. This means more shops, bars, restaurants and tourist attractions. All of these things are going to attract people to the area which means that it will be easy to sell on the property when you decide that you want the money.

Obviously putting your money into investment property is a major step and is something that should be thought about seriously. Just like with all investments there will always be risks which is why you should do your research before committing to anything or paying any money. The internet is a great place to find out information and any company specialising in investment property will be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have.
