Hi everybody out there :)
It's been a while since I wrote my last entry.

For the past weekend Stephanie and I went to the US for visiting Seattle. It was just the 2 of us, cause all others well-behaved studied for their mid-term exams ;) - so I picked up Stephanie at 4 o'clock in the morning and we started our adventure down the Transcanada highway. In Hope (which is not spectacular at all) I had a break for my first coffee, while Steph remained in the car for having a nap :) We then went on to the border in Abbotsford where we arrived around 7.15 in the morning. After waiting some time at the border and giving away our fingerprints and photos we finally entered the US at 7.45 and went further down south.

On the way we had some fruity breakfast: bananas & apples, but also some bread with spreads (you see: Austrians are always prepared for a trip) Around 9.30 a.m. we reached our first goal, the "Premium Outland Center" north of Seattle, where our first task was reserving a room at the Green Tortoise hostel - hey, call us early birds ;) we then got our first dollars and spent them immediately ;) I got 2 new LEVI's, 2 shirts and a stylish Zoo-York Hoodie for 140 bucks - try that in Austria!!!! Stephanie got some nice stuff too (among others a pretty cool neckerchief) and around 3.30 p.m. we got back onto interstate 5 to perfectly hit rush hour in Seattle.

We reached downtown around 5 p.m. and started searching for a parking lot close to our hostel and finally ended up in a garage for a cheap 16 $ (!!!) for 24 hours, which is a reduced price already for people staying at the hostel. After making use ot the incredible slow free internet at the hostel, we got to our room where, believe it or not: we did some readings for university and got to bed early around 11 p.m. after having had a long day.

The next day (Saturday) we got up at 8 p.m. and had breakfast at the hostel (which was for free). After some yummy waffles with maple syrup, a brownie you could die for, a banana and some orange chinks we went down to Pike place market, where people were setting up their booths for the daily market. We then walked to Space Needle, well-known as Seattle's landmark and got up the 160 metres to the observation platform. Having shot a lot of pics and even taken a short movie (oooh yeah ... will come soon) we went down again and went into the "Experience Music Project", which's a museum about contemporary rock music, covering all of Seattle's famous musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. We also searched for the Seattle Grace Hospital, because Stephanie wanted to have a ride with the elevator there ;) she was kind of desperate when we were told that there is no hospital called Seattle Grace :(

After having lunch we had a walk downtown, so Steph could check out where to shop the next day ;) we then made a short stopover at the hostel and went back to the Space Needle in the evening to get some night shots of downtown Seattle. As we had been running around all-day long we decided to go to a close Italian restaurant for a pizza, which tasted really good. We then headed towards the hostel again and one more time stopped for a coffee. We had a short look on the internet, where we discovered the tradegy about J. Haider in Austria (RIP) and then went to bed around 12.30 a.m. and already were excited about the next day.

Got up a bit later on Sunday (guess it was 8.30) and had some breakfast again. We then walked down to Pike place market again to the original 1st Starbucks store to get some coffee and a nice coffee mug (it's really worth going there, cause there's always some pretty good blues musicians hanging around). Later we took a guided tour through "Seattle Underground", which is really recommendable and was a lot of fun. On our way back downtown we also had a look at Seattle's library which is situated inmidst the financial district. We had some Indian food for lunch (yummy!) and passed by the afternoon with shopping and 2 or 3 coffees at Starbucks and "Seattle's best coffee" shops. At 5 we picked up my ride at the garage and paid the 32 $ for the 2 days there. We then headed to the REI centre, which is a huge store for outdoor sports, because I wanted to have a look at the skiing stuff there.

So now it gets really interesting:
After leaving that store we got to the apartment of a guy called Jacob. I e-mailed to him via couchsurfing.com the day before, asking if we could stay at his apartment for that night. Well ... he agreed and so we went to his really cool apartment with that great view to Space Needle and Downtown. He then invited us to come along to his friends apartment, where we had a nice evening meeting a load of interesting people (most of them working for Microsoft, google or as a surgeon at the hospital).

Having spent the night on a great couch we left from Jacob's apartment around 9.30 a.m. on Monday heading for the university of Washington, where Stephanie wanted to get an i-pod at the apple store (which we finally couldn't find and so we went to Starbucks instead for getting our breakfast, which we took in the university's park). Our next thing on schedule was visiting Woodland Park Zoo, which we then cancelled because weather was getting worse and worse. Instead we tried to find the Microsoft headquarters in Redmond (10 miles east of Seattle), which took us more than 1.5 hours to find and is totally unspectacular. So then we decided to go home earlier and after having a stop at Denny's for late lunch we headed north for good ole Canada :D

At the border Stephanie was an ace in convincing the customs officer that we had not purchased for more than 50 bucks (I think together we spent 400-500 dollars). Having crossed the border successfully we had some coffee at, guess where: Starbucks and then went back to Kamloops at really bad weather conditions (very cold and raining all the time). Finally we got back go Kamloops some minutes after 8.30 p.m., being happy about our weekend and the impressions from Seattle.

So, I think that's pretty much the most important facts about the trip. I'll put some pics online soon!

Greez and blessings,

copiado sem dó do guitar and all good music, fonte inacabável duma boa sonzeira.

Remastered Curtis Knight material 1965-67. 'Jimi Hendrix: The Complete PPX Studio Recordings' (SPV, 2000) presents one version of the Hendrix narrative, or at least one specific part of one specific narrative. There are so many strands to the Hendrix story that one would imagine that we've covered the lot of 'em by now, but the PPX Recordings suggest yet another sub-plot, another role for him to play. Indeed it is a role Hendrix plays very well, but it is a role which critical rock orthodoxy has largely chosen to ignore. The PPX Recordings are badly packaged, clumsily thrown together and poorly annotated. Across 6 CDs we have a bewildering ragbag collection of live tracks, demos and re-worked demos, RnB covers, brief instrumentals and endless anonymous jams, all drawn from two separate periods in Jimi's life; pre-mega success in 1965 as RnB guitar sideman to Curtis Knight & The Squires, and mid-mega success in 1967 upon returning to New York to jam with his old buddies. Prior to being spirited away to the UK and psychedelic stardom by Chas Chandler, Hendrix had signed to small-time hustler Ed Chaplin's PPX Recordings. This would result in a whole buncha legal action that I ain't gonna even claim to be interested in, but whatever the ins and outs of the whole affair, a whole mess of PPX cash-in odds and sods have slowly crept out over the years on vinyl, CD, semi-authorised bootlegs etc and 58 of 'em wound up being compiled here. For all I know there could be hours and hours more of this stuff, I guess you'd have to ask somebody. Most of the music on here is uncredited, there is nothing to indicate the dates of the recordings, who played on them, where they were recorded, why they were recorded etc etc, the art-work sucks, the names of the tracks just seem to have been made up at random, there's take after take of the same 'song' and all in all the box-set (if you can call a flimsy cardboard sleeve a box) is a cheap piece of garbage that doesn't give Hendrix - OR THE MUSIC - the respect / attention / care that it deserves. And because this music is (a) recorded terribly, (b) presented carelessly, (c) doesn't sound like 'All Along The Watchtower', generally people just haven't really given a damn about it. Infact, it's been treated as a bit of an embarrassment. Shit, who wants to hear Jimi plodding through another aimless wah-wah instrumental, or churning out who-gives-a-damn chicken 'n' grits versions of 'What I'd Say?' This isn't the Hendrix we know, right? Where are the production values? The stick-it-to-Clapton guitar heroics? The electrified, dandified acid-rock pyrotechnics? Motherfugger'd played this garbage at Woodstock the cat would been booed right off the goddamn stage. This music is a stain on the Hendrix canon. It isn't fit to be considered Hendrix music. I bet he hated playin' this unsophisticated crap. Why don't we just forget the whole sorry affair, huh, and get back to listenin' to 'Electric Ladyland'. The fact is simply that there are a handful of tracks contained on these six CDs that if you didn't know Hendrix was playing on them - though his playing is so wonderfully distinctive that this is highly unlikely - and you heard 'em in a club, you'd be like : "Wow. This sure is some excellent, rough-ass, breakbeat powered psychedelic funk-rock. That rolling bass. That wild, wig-out wah-wah geetar. Man, this is really good. Gotta be mid-late 60s. A bit Baby Huey & The Babysitters. A bit Black Merda. Hidden in the crates of some Texas record store for 40 years. Yeah. Probably by some band with a name like 'Joe Thunder and The Thunderstorm Soul Band', who put out one 45 in 1966. Wonder if it's ever turned up on a Cherrystones compilation at some point. Think I'll ask the DJ. Dude, who's this by? Jimi Hendrix? No, seriously, who's this track by? Jimi Hendrix? You gotta be kiddin' me! It's Hendrix on guitar? Who's singing? Curtis Knight? What LP is this from? This is brilliant!" Basically what I'm saying is you gotta re-contextualise this shit. This ain't 'The Wind Cries Mary.' You gotta forget about all that. This is music by an LSD-fuelled psyche-soul band, a proto-Funkadelic, bass/drums/guitar, live, loud, messy sometimes, but coming with some seriously heavy fonk, loadsa bottom-end and buckets of furious fuzz. Sure, it lacks the polish of Hendrix's big bucks stuff. Sure, some of it ain't arranged all that well. But check out the grooves. These is some cookin' jams. If you'da come across these tunes on some Jazzman / Quantic / Andy Votel compilation you'd sho' nuff dig 'em the most, and they'd be the equal of half the shit on there. To judge 'em by the standards of Hendrix's canonised material is unfair. Let's not patronise this music by dismissing it as 'just gut-bucket funk' or 'just chicken 'n' grits RnB' just 'cos it don't fit into some white-rock version of Who Hendrix Is. The PPX Recordings have been neglected because Hendrix fans are generally fans of acid / heavy rock, and thus have found little to enjoy here. (One only has to consider the poor standing of his 'Band Of Gypsys' LP, a flat-out funk-rock monster, a really stunning album, to see what effect this bias / prejudice has had on the reputation of his funk-orientated output....but that's for another time) Fans of funk and psyche / garage curios, on the other hand, will find tons to dig here, and if you're anything like me will actually revel in the sheer amount of material on offer - however varied in quality. It is a crying shame that it has been packaged badly, and that more quality control was not exercised (there is alot of PPX material that simply doesn't merit having been released) but this should not distract from the great tracks sprinkled among the rubbish. It's time we seriously re-evaluate this particular version of the Hendrix narrative, because there is music here which does his reputation proud. There is stuff on here I dig so much that even if he'd never done anything else, he'd still be a hero. This is Jimi Hendrix: The Obscure Psychedelic Funk Band Guitarist.

I just finished reading the graphic novel, or series of comics "Watchmen". The writing and artwork were both really great, especially the writing. It was really thought provoking and paints great images when reading. When I got to the end I thought it was pretty good, but I had seen it somewhere before . . . "Heroes". Now, I like the show, but "Heroes" totally ripped off the ending to "Watchmen", thus diminishing the ending once I got there. That kind of sucks, because I would have to assume that when the comic was actually published, and the ending was a far more original idea, its impact would be amazing and an instant classic. But since I had seen the first season of "Heroes", which relied largely on the same idea, except with the opposite result, it didn't excite me as much.

I find this exact same scenario to be true in music today. What if the first song you ever heard was "Karma Chameleon" by culture club, or the first guitar solo you heard was in a Metallica song. What would that say about your perspective on music. You would have no frame of reference of what came before it, what was better, like The Zombies or Jimi Hendrix.

Being a musician I've been thinking about this a lot. I want to compose songs like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles or Bob Dylan. There is a certain period that is considered "classic" in the history of pop or rock music and that is largely the 60's and 70's. There is so much music out there today, and so many styles it is an overload. No one is writing music like that anymore because it isn't "new" to them. What if the first song you ever heard was "Crossroads" (Robert Johnson). What kind of song would you write after hearing that? "Voodoo Chile"? "Spanish Castle Magic"? What if you were a contemporary of Hendrix, what would you write, "One of These Nights", "Hotel California"? Musicians are influenced by their peers and what they hear in their time and we're losing touch with the greatest music.

In reaction to this I have decided to remove any music pre-1980 from my iPod in an effort to let classic music affect me and my writing. I've been largely influenced by Dave Matthews and John Mayer, and I think I need to change that. So pre-1980 is really the only criteria. I may have to develop a few exceptions (Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Police, U2, Ryan Adams, Keith Urban) for groups that are considered classic but post-1980, or great modern songwriters, but I'm going to attempt to only listen to "classic" music as if I lived in a time where there was no music beyond that. Great composing, great songwriting. Clearly there is great music today, but there is something about that time that needs to be revived. I guess we'll see what happens.

Peace.

I was just thinking its funny that I don't listen to the Beatles, can anyone tell me why?

The following are disturbing and TRUE tales of the episodic and horrific life that B. Hussein Obama

The following are disturbing and TRUE tales of the episodic and horrific life that B. Hussein Obama has led. He is an unstoppable machine hell bent on world domination. Senator McCain, if you want to win the third and final debate, you must bring up the top nine most gruesome travesties of B. Hussein Obama's existence.

WARNING: ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. THIS IS ALL TRUE.

9. B. Hussein Obama was a member of the Weather Underground.

B. Hussein Obama, at age eleven, placed placed a bomb inside The Pentagon. We all know he attended a radical non-Christian school at a young age, but who knew it would pay such dividends so rapidly. And also, he built the bomb himself with handwritten directions from William "I piss in America's mouth" Ayers. (Note: Ayers is under investigation for teaching at aforementioned radical non-Christian school)

8. B. Hussein Obama was supposed to actually shot Ronald Reagan.

B. Hussein Obama, at age twenty, after reading The Catcher in the Rye for the thirteenth time, attempted to murder then-president Reagan. He disguised himself as a white man named John Hinckley Jr. Look at the evidence. It's all there.

7. B. Hussein Obama shot JFK.

B. Hussein Obama, at age two, fired the magic bullet from the grassy knoll which ended then-president Kennedy's life. Two days after what was his first murder, B. Hussein Obama, drunk on the taste of blood, disguised himself as a fat white man named Jack Ruby and murdered an innocent man named Lee Harvey Oswald for no reason whatsoever.

6. B. Hussein Obama was a kamikaze pilot during the Pearl Harbor attacks.

B. Hussein Obama, at age negative twenty, flew a Japanese fighter plane into the U.S.S. Arizona, igniting it's magazine and leading to its ultimate demise. Contrary to popular belief, the magazine was not hit by a motified 40cm shell, it was hit by B. Hussein Obama. (Also, it should be noted that, at the time of the impact, B. Hussein Obama was writing the introduction to Mein Kampf )

5. B. Hussein Obama and his wife are drug dealers.

B. Hussein Obama sold the dope that killed John Belushi, Chris Farley, River Phoenix, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain (B. Hussein Obama also sold him the shotgun), Ken Caminiti, Truman Capote, Steve Clark of Def Leopard, Judy Garland, Mitch Hedberg, Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger, Marylin Monroe, Brad Nowll, Anna Nicole Smith, Edie Sedgwick, Sid Vicious, and Elvis.

4. B. Hussein Obama killed Goose in Top Gun.

B. Hussein Obama co-wrote the hit film Top Gun at age twenty five. However, in the final cut of the film he inserted his alternate ending so that Goose, Maverick's co-pilot doesn't kill Osama bin Laden with a hunting knife after pulling out Saddam Hussein's Adam's apple (like in the movie Roadhouse). Instead, trying to humiliate Tom Cruise's character (who was obviously modeled after John McCain), B. Hussein demanded that Goose be killed in the midst of a homosexual orgy. Ultimately a third ending was chosen for theaters.

3. B. Hussein Obama tortures animals.

B. Hussein Obama put that gerbil up Richard Gere's ass. It's true. Look it up.

2. B. Hussein Obama attended dog fights at Michael Vick's house.

As if putting innocent animals inside of famous people wasn't bad enough, B. Hussein Obama (and Jeremiah Wright) wagered millions of dollars on brutal dog fights at Michael Vick's house over the last thirty years. B. Hussein was introduced to the sport of dog fighting by Jeremiah Wright. Also B. Hussein told Michael Vick to give Sonya Elliot genital herpes. (*On a related note, B. Hussein came up with the alias Ron Mexico)

1. B. Hussein Obama betrayed Jesus H. Christ and got him killed.

This is a little known fact about B. Hussein Obama's long and horrible horrible life, but it is an important one. B. Hussein attended the last supper of Christ under the name "Judas Iscariot". He stole Mr. Iscariot's identity on the Internet. B. Hussein chewed with is mouth open, got absurdly drunk, passed gas multiple times and then, after embarrassing himself thoroughly, betrayed Christ, ultimately resulting in the demise of our Lord and Savior. The real Judas Iscariot was informed of this travesty and issued a formal apology. It's in the Book of Revelations. Look it up. He's in this picture. Look.

Hopefully this event will take place later rather than sooner, but in my opinion it is never too early to start planning. Who am I kidding? Anyone who knows me personally knows that planning is pretty much my kryptonite. It saps all of my energy and is an effort in futility when I am the one doing the planning. In any event, some of the songs I want played have been in other lists so I won't include them in the five, but they are definitely worth noting. "Spiritual" by Johnny Cash (things you want to experience before dying) would be at the top of this list because it just sounds like an appropriate song to play in that circumstance, "Bold as Love" by Jimi Hendrix would be appropriate because it's my favorite song, and Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback" (songs I have listened to more than four times in a row) and Soulja Boy's "Crank That" (guiltiest guilty pleasures) make the list because people need to be dancing and having fun as well. Enough of what's not on the list, here are the songs that made it:

"Nothing Compares 2 U" performed by Sinead O'Connor - My first exposure to this song was in 1989 when my big sister was in love with this song. With her being so fond of it made an impact on me, though truth be told I never actually listened to the lyrics with a full understanding until I began writing this entry. I'd want this song played because I would hope that a super smart supermodel would be crying hysterically while this song was playing because this is what she thought of me. Still to this day I am moved when I see O'Connor
[googlevideo=http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3701234023087143660&ei=YGzsSIDsHoaYrQLWhZmZCw&q=nothing+compares&vt=lf]

“Ne Me Quitte Pas” by Nina Simone - The song is in French, I have no idea what it means even though my aunt France who is from France (seriously) told me, but it remains one of the most moving pieces of art to ever reverberate in my ear. This was the song I (unintentionally) listened to the most when I was grieving over the death of a loved one, and I want it to be the same for me. Just because in my mind it's the song that is most closely related with grief.

"The Funeral" by Band of Horses - Before it was in every other commercial, this song was one of my favorites. Look at the title of the song. It says it all right there. This is the perfect song.

"Chicken Noodle Soup" by DJ Webstar - Because it would make people focus on how ridiculous the song is instead of missing me. Plus I want people to dance.

"Venus As A Boy" by Bjork - If you can combine two of your favorite things it's rarely a bad thing (think peanut butter and jelly in the same jar) and this song is no different. With it being included in one of my favorite movies, Leon The Professional, and being performed by one of my favorite artists, Bjork, it just makes sense.

BIG TRUCK

BIG TRUCK are a young West London-based rock band. They have been established for just over a year now, having played almost 50 shows in and around the London area. In this time BIG TRUCK have not only recorded their debut album ‘One Long Saturday Night’ but also played a sold-out show at Camden’s Purple Turtle to celebrate its first press. Since then BIG TRUCK have been well received on many independant radio stations in the UK including Total Rock, Inferno and Brit FM to name a few. This was followed by a recent brief tour of Canada and airplay on UPV Radio 102.5 FM in Spain, proving that BIG TRUCK have both UK and international appeal.

BIG TRUCK are a four-piece line up with soaring guitars, driving bass, solid drums and choruses that have you singing along before you even know the words. They hail their influences from a variety of contemporary and classic bands - Foo Fighters, The Who, Muse and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few. The debut album ‘One Long Saturday Night’ is available for sale, along with some very stylish merchandise, through their website as well as at live shows. When asked for a quote about the band, producer and Nick Olivieri’s Mondo Generator guitarist Simon ‘Spud’ Beggs simply stated "BIG TRUCK rock!" No words have ever been more truly spoken. BIG TRUCK are now back in London promoting their album.

I'm a big Bob Dylan fan and usually I prefer Bob's version to a cover version of one of his songs. Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower is an exception; in fact, since Jimi's death, Bob has done All Along the Watchtower more or less in Jimi's style. This video, from a 1970 concert on the Isle of Wight is a much rougher version than the album version, but it's worth watching if only to see Jimi's crazy outfit.

Enjoy

Looking at his cover of the wind cries mary, he really tries to do the Hendrix thing.

I was excited and pleasantly surprised to receive your letter. As I've told you before you write well. Why not keep a diary or start a story or something? Writing is fun, cathartic, passes the time, provides escape and, maybe most importantly, releases demons. You may be there but when you write you can be anywhere: a beautiful beach on a tropical island, inside a crater on the moon, or the peak of Stromboli when it's spitting red lava into the black sky.

Yes, the universe works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it unfolds in our favor and sometimes not. In my experience, it has always rewarded my positive thoughts, words and deeds and punished me when my actions weren't honorable. So when 'bad' things happen, I try to learn a lesson. Of course, I can't change the past but I can use it as a diving board for the future.

Jimi is currently cuddled up lengthwise along my leg. She's growing by the day. We've had her for a mere three and a half weeks and already she's tripled in size. At this rate, I'll be living with an elephant by the end of the month. She's good though, behaves well. In that short time, she has learned quickly and obeys (most of) the rules. As a reward, we've given her complete freedom to roam. That's right. She has access to every room even when we aren't home. However, if at the end of the month we find ourselves with a five-hundred-euro phone bill, we'll know whom to blame.

So you've been reading 500 pages a week. Hurray! Hurrah! Keep up the good work. Where do you find the time to sleep, eat and exercise? And what about your personal hygiene? Don't neglect your toiletries.

Quote: (from The Practical Pedal)

"It's a cliched story but one that inspires us nonetheless. Jimmy Hendrix learned to play guitar upside down because he didn't have a left-handed model. Scores of children in Costa Rica will out-surf you on homemade boards carved from trees. From shoeless long-distance runners to that

one guy on a fixed gear at a cyclocross race, there are people out there whose competence comes from a practiced humanity, not a collection of gear. We can't help but admire them. The next time you think you need a new piece of equipment, ask first whether it's new equipment you really need, or just more practice."

Lesson:

We need to stop buying the hype that we need to buy new crap. Yes, there are things that increase functionality, but we usually buy new stuff for the image, not the function. If we could only realize that what's cool is always defined by counter-culture submovents fighting against hype...

Be cool, save money. Stop buying fancy new stuff.

Amici ciao!

[caption id="attachment_189" align="alignnone" width="413" caption="Cleveland by night"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_193" align="alignnone" width="450" caption="Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum "][/caption]

Good Luck! ;)

Salutata Cleveland ci siamo rimessi in viaggio. Domani è... show time!
