With the impending triple election saga this fall (US + Canadian Federal Elections + Halifax Municip

With the impending triple election saga this fall (US + Canadian Federal Elections + Halifax Municipal Elections), it appears that many local news outlets in Halifax have determined that US and Canadian federal elections are more worthy of coverage than the more relevant Halifax municipal elections. Therefore, that leaves social media to do as much as we can to cover this important event and scrutinize the candidates so the public can make an informed decision when they head to the polls.

First, allow me to clarify the parameters of this review. This review will not delve into the experience of each candidate. It will not scrutinize them on key issues either. While important, a review as thorough as that is simply beyond my capacity for time. Therefore, I hope readers will accept my attempt at deciphering the suitability of a candidate based solely on: Their use of technology in their campaign.

My reasoning is simple:

For a city to grow and prosper, it must have a vision of how it wants its future to look like, and appoint capable people to lead it towards that future,

Any talk of working towards or within ‘the future ultimately involves some form of interaction with the tools of this future, namely existing and upcoming technologies that are designed to provide leaders with the ability to efficiently and productively collect, analyze, and communicate information.

In other words, if a candidate can not collect, analyze, understand, and communicate information quickly, accurately, and efficiently, then they will not be able to plan/implement/respond in a timely manner to the continuous pace of changes that are needed for a successful march towards the future. Of course, this is only a problem if a united vision of the future is present and if there is a collective will on council to achieve it within this lifetime.

THE SCORE CARD below will attempt to reflect a candidate’s ability to work with the communication tools of existing mainstream technologies (the internet), which may tell whether or not a candidate has access to the tools that open a world beyond Halifax or their district for their consideration, tools that allow this candidate to draw on this world’s marvel when it’s time to envision the future of Halifax as a city with its place in Canada and the world.

You may disagree with the above criteria. Certainly, an elections candidate can serve his/her immediate district constituents very well without ever having to send a single email. “What’s that Bob? Need snow plows to clear your cul-de-sac twice a day? I’ll call the person responsible and see what can be done about that right away.”

However, I contend that a candidate that can get the street plowed AND use the internet is infinitely more productive, and more informed. But that’s just me.

The big question is: can a candidate’s awareness of technology (the internet, productivity and communications tools, etc.) be a good indicator of their capacity for visioning a future for Halifax? Does this mean this candidate is completely unfit for council duties? Is it more acceptable for a candidate to be less apt with technology, vision, and the future if these things are not a priority to their target voter? Where is the line drawn between individual district priorities and the priorities of the city as a whole? These are the questions that keep me up at night.

I will leave this determination to your individual and collective priorities for the city and your understanding of the qualifications you require of your elected leader to achieve these priorities.

So then, let’s proceed to the rankings!

Measurement Criteria:

To offer a fair comparison, we will mainly analyze a candidate’s use of the internet to communicate in their campaign. If a candidate is unable or unwilling to use the most basic form of today’s communication technologies (a website), then I am willing to safely assume that this candidate does not have the knowledge of the tools of today’s productive leaders and visionaries. But, again, that’s just me.

Candidates will get 1 point on their use of each of the following online communication tools in their campaign. This does not mean that the candidate has to know how to program or create any of the following. It would suffice if they were merely aware of their existence/importance and have directed the appropriate resources towards addressing them.

I'm watching the Vandy game and they keep showing some of my favorite commercials, Jack Link's Beef Jerky Messin' With Sasquatch. Those frickin' commercials crack me up. Here are a couple of my favorites.

I really think if Leblanc and I were out and about and ran into Sasquatch this would be something we probably would do. But I do love how old Sasquatch gets his revenge in the end every time.

Yes, yes.....another Monday has arrived. Sadly we mourn the death of another weekend. I had a different song picked out for this week, but while hanging out with Leblanc and Cluttered Brain this weekend, I stumbled upon an even more appropriate song for Melancholy Monday. This is a band called Theory of a Deadman with a song called "Hate My Life". Crappy Monday everyone!!!!

I have seen several folks in the Nashville blogging community, including good friends Leblanc and Cluttered Brain (aka the School Girl and Mrs. Mixologist), participating in what is being called "Feel Good Friday". While I tend to normally feel good on Friday, I also feel like crying on Monday knowing I have to fight my way through another week to get to the fun of the weekend. Not to mention that I tend to like sad, tearjerking ballads. So I am starting my own thing, which I'll call Melancholy Monday, in which I will pick a sad, depressing song to go along with those emotions equated to the beginning of another work week.

I've decided to begin the tradition with a song that has a very strange effect on me....I never fail to get choked up when I hear it. It's called "Autumn" by a very talented singer-songwriter named Paolo Nutini.

So, Crappy Monday to everyone and here's hoping the week goes by quickly and the beer is cold once the weekend finally arrives!

I love that I spent most of my childhood in the 80s. There are so many things from that decade that

I love that I spent most of my childhood in the 80s. There are so many things from that decade that I remember fondly. I have revisited some of those things and found that it was just the memory of the thing that I loved because the thing itself actually wasn't that great. I'll be doing some separate posts down the line to illustrate some of these things. One of the things I look back on with fondness from that period is baseball.

My love affair with baseball began in 1988 when, having some extra money burning a hole in my pocket, I went to a convenient store to buy some candy and instead bought a pack of Topps baseball cards on a whim. I think a pack of cards cost like $.50 back then. Anyway, I got home and tore the package open, stuffed the nasty chewing gum from it into my mouth, and chewed away while shuffling through the cards. Most had names and faces on them that I'd never heard of, but it was a thrilling experience to say the least and I was hooked. The players were unfamiliar to me because I had never really been interested in baseball up to that point. I'm not even sure why I wanted to buy that initial pack of cards to this day. But once I got that first pack, something was sparked within me and I had to have more cards and I also had to know more about the players on the cards and the game that they all played.

Luckily, I had a good source of information about all of it in my dad. He had grown up in Oregon, rooting for the San Francisco Giants and this of course made him an automatic Los Angeles Dodgers hater. He also hated the New York Yankees, which he passed along to me and I hate the Yankees to this very day. But by this time he had begun to follow the Chicago Cubs and the first baseball I ever watched was with him, listening to Harry Caray announcing on WGN. Dad was a Ryne Sandberg fan and I found that I liked him as well and I also became a fan of Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, and Andre Dawson(who should be in the HOF, IMO). Soon I was watching every Cubs game that I could and loved summer because it meant that I could pretty much watch every day. There were so many Cubs greats that came before this time period, but to me, this was the golden age of the Cubs and I'll never forget the excitement I felt when they made it to the post-season in 1989......even if it was short-lived thanks to the Giants.

I also found out that Dad had been a baseball card collector back when he was a kid and he broke out his collection to show me when he found out about my new hobby. This was the beginning of my education in baseball history as I had never before heard of players such as Mickey Mantle, Ernie Banks, Willie McCovey (Dad's childhood fave), or Willie Mays. And once Dad had a look at the baseball cards I had bought, the fire was rekindled in him as well and we found a hobby that we could participate in together. We bought boxes of packs of cards, tried to build complete sets for each year and baseball card manufacturer, and attended countless baseball card conventions (filled with greedy card dealers who would cheat you faster than you can say "Lenny Dykstra", but I digress). We spent hours at the department stores going through the rack packs to try to find some with star players visible on the front. It was a great way for a father and son to spend time together and we really enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before Upper Deck began producing high-quality baseball cards. Sure I loved them and collected them as well, but soon the likes of Topps, Donruss, and Fleer couldn't keep up. This gave birth to the specialty baseball cards such as Topps Stadium Club and Fleer Ultra that cost like $3.00 a pack and soon flooded the baseball card market and brought it to its knees. But it also took all the fun out of card collecting and that was the end for our mutual hobby. I still have all of my baseball cards and thought that someday I might pass them on to Big D, but I think the days of kids being interested in sports card collecting is a thing of the past. I'll just hang on to them and see what happens, I suppose, just as Dad has done with his.

This all coincided with me coming to the age where my thoughts were turning more to cars and having the freedom of mobility. Going out on the town with my friends left me less and less time to watch baseball and I soon lost interest altogether. At least I got to make it out to Chicago with Dad in the late 80s or early 90s and it was a very special day. It was one of those rare occasions when the Cubs and White Sox were playing at home on the same day.....so we got to watch the Cubs play the Giants at Wrigley Field in the afternoon and the Sox and the Yankees that night in the long since torn down Comiskey Park. Harry Caray even announced our names on the Cubs broadcast that day and I'll never forget the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch.

After high school, I didn't keep up with baseball much and I haven't really since.....until this year. It all started when Leblanc recommended that I read "Shoeless Joe" by W.P. Kinsella. I had always loved Field of Dreams, so I decided to give it a shot. I didn't like the book as much as the movie, but there was something about the love for baseball that the main character, Ray Kinsella, displayed that started up that old spark again. I have begun watching the Ken Burns Baseball documentary.....I know I am a little late, but baseball history from way back in the day never changes and I have kept up with the headlines enough to have a pretty decent idea of the major events since 1994. I am really enjoying that show and am also planning on reading some books on the history of the Cubs. I have even gone so far as to watch a couple of innings of a Cubs game this year....probably the first since the game after Harry Caray passed away in 1998. It's kind of weird since I am not familiar with the players like I was back in 1989, but I figure I will learn who I like soon enough. Also, this season is the 100th season since the Cubs won a World Series and they are currently in first place in their division. I find myself checking the standings every few days and am enjoying keeping up with what's going on in the baseball world. We're even thinking about making a trip out to Chicago next year and I'll do everything I can to get into Wrigley again.

Whether or not it will last this time is unknown, but I have a feeling that it will. Dad doesn't really keep up with baseball anymore but at least I've got Leblanc to share the enthusiasm. Here's hoping the Cubs can break the curse exactly 100 years later.......if not, it'll be fun to watch anyway and anyway "there's always next year".

The highly anticipated film production of TV series Friends has finally been given the go-ahead, MailOnline has learned.

Cast members Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer will reprise their roles for a big-screen adaptation 'within the next 18 months', according to insiders.

The actors have been inspired by the recent success of Sex And The City, which recently hit cinemas worldwide.

Together again: Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer will star in the Friends movie

A source said: 'Jennifer, Courteney and the rest of the cast are keen to reprise their roles, under the right circumstances.

'The box office success of Sex And The City has really got their wheels spinning about how a Friends film could be just as big, if done right.

'Timing and the script are really important, but now that Courteney and Jen both have production companies, they can potentially get very involved in those decisions.'

Talk of a reunion for the loveable gang from New York's Central Perk has been bandied around Hollywood ever since the show aired its final season in 2004.

While Cox, 44, LeBlanc, 40, Perry, 39, Kudrow, 45 and Schwimmer, 41, were believed to be keen on the reunion, Aniston, 39, is believed to have dragged her heels.

Now, however, she is keen to move ahead with the project, which will be produced by Warner Bros.

The source added: 'As the biggest star of the Friends franchise, Jennifer can't help but look at what's happened with Sarah Jessica Parker and the Sex And The City film and be a little jealous.

'What's held back a Friends movie so far is that people were worried that Jennifer had simply become too famous to play Rachel again.

Inspiration: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kirsten Davis's success has provided the incentive for a Friends big-screen reunion

'But the truth is that Jennifer is finally willing to do it, and she'd love to work with that whole team of actors and producers again.

'She says she and Courteney have already talked this summer about what they want out of a Friends movie, and if deals can be made with them, everything else can fall into place rather quickly.

'It really comes down to money, and I don't think Jen has a problem with all of the Friends getting huge paydays for the movie.

'In that sense, it's Sex And The City all over again. There's no movie unless you can reunite the whole cast and keep them all happy financially.'

The Sex And The City film, which had series star Sarah Jessica Parker as a producer, is headed for a global box office total of well over $300million.

That number exceeds all pre-release expectations and insiders say US studio Warner Bros is now mining its recent library of TV hits for other projects ready for the movie treatment.

The source told MailOnline: 'Friends is at the top of the list of properties that can do the same level of business Sex And The City did.'

Since going their separate ways, the actors have stayed in the entertainment sphere, with varying success.

Aniston, who depicted lead character Rachel, has starred in a series of romantic comedies but her professional endeavours have been overshadowed by romantic upheaval.

Following her divorce from Brad Pitt in 2005, she endured a reportedly volatile relationship with actor Vince Vaughn before recently embarking on a romance with musician John Mayer.

Courteney Cox, who depicted neurotic Monica, enjoyed relative success with her TV show Dirt, where she played a ruthless tabloid media mogul.

Lisa Kudrow, who co-starred as ditzy folk singer Phoebe, continues to work in film - but mostly lower profile independent ones.

Matt Le Blanc has laid low in Hollywood since the failure of his Friends spin-off series Joey, passing on TV and film roles to focus on his home life.

David Schwimmer, aka Ross, now seems most comfortable playing the role of movie director. He recently directed hit comedy Run Fatboy Run.

from dailymail.co.uk

Probably not, but I can say one thing for sure, Absinthe Film's production Optimistic? made me want to say farewell to jibs and rails forever.

This movie features some of the most creative minds in snowboarding using natural backcountry terrain to get their shred on. I guarantee you, some parts will blow your mind. MFM's step-up to back lip on a cornice, Mikey LeBlanc's "tobogganist" antics, Matt Beardmore's tree tap reverts and absolutely everything Gigi Ruf and Nicolas Muller touch with snowboards attached to their feet.

If you haven't seen it yet, grab yourself a copy or, at least, try to find some clips on YouTube. It will change the way you look at the mountain (or your local resort).

Keep an eye on the Absinthe website for updates on a 2008 release and to check out some behind-the-scenes features from all the movies. jp.

.

One of the ways I can tell I am getting older is my annoyance with younger people. This was extrem

One of the ways I can tell I am getting older is my annoyance with younger people. This was extremely evident to me this past Saturday night. As you may have already read, Leblanc, La Hermana, Michael TD, and I went to the Will Hoge/Jason Isbell show at the Cannery that night. It was a very good show, but I think I would have enjoyed it so much more had there not been so many younger people there. It was an 18 and over show and was the second Will Hoge show I had been to....the first was at the Exit/In and was largely populated by what appeared to be Vanderbilt students. So anyway, there were many things these younger folks did to lessen my enjoyment of the show.....both directly and indirectly.

First off, a hate how younger people (especially those who recently turned 21) go out of their way to basically say, "Hey, look at me! I'm out drinking alcohol......in public!!!" Everywhere I looked there were young folks dancing around with their beer bottles or hoisting them in the air or using them as a pretend microphone to sing into. Here's a tip for you guys: No one is jealous or thinks you are cool, except maybe the 18- to 20-year-olds in the crowd. Everyone else has pretty much been there and done that.....and to many of us, it's pretty old hat.

The second thing kind of goes hand-in-hand with the first.....and doesn't necessarily just include younger people. People who go out to shows and get so wasted that they lose control of their bodies were in abundance the other night. Leblanc has already documented the instance of the girl dancing around wildly, flailing her arms and carelessly hitting unsuspecting men in the ding-ding. There was also the crazy-haired guy in the front row who stumbled passed us during the show smelling as if he had soiled himself and the guy in the suit who claimed to have gone to high school with Will Hoge who got so enthusiastic about seeing Will play that he almost fell on and crushed the afore-mentioned ding-ding smacking girl. I saw some of these same folks at the Exxon station on Broadway after the show and I hoped to God they weren't driving themselves home.

OK, next point and this one also probably applies more to the younger folks than the older ones, but I don't know. People, please, when an artist is up on stage singing a quiet, soulful song with all their heart, please shut the hell up. The buzz of conversation made it impossible to hear opening act Dawn Landes's ballads but I just thought that was because she was the opening act and nobody was familiar with her music, but sadly, no. Even when Will was performing one of his slower tunes I could barely hear him for all of the yakking. That is so disrespectful and I am really impressed that Dawn or Will didn't stop in mid song to yell, "Hey, y'all shut the f&*# up, I am trying to sing here!!!!" I know I would have.

My annoyance with all of this is probably pretty normal and in another ten years I'll probably be posting about how people in their early 30s really just get on my last damned nerve and it'll continue on until I'm complaining about those damned 80-year-olds when I'm 94. Hopefully I'll make it that long so I can find out for sure.

The last time I wrote about what I've been reading, I was severely depressed by A Farewell to Arms and was looking forward to getting started on a "surefire pick-me-up" in Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. Well, it surely didn't depress me, but it just about bored me to death. I am shocked to even see myself writing that because I am such a HUGE Neil Gaiman fan.......since the early 1990s when I first picked up a Sandman comic book. I won't go so far to say I totally didn't like Good Omens....there were some good parts and I found the authors' thoughts on Good vs. Evil to be very interesting. There were just a lot of parts that I struggled through and it took me much longer to read than any of the other Gaiman books I've read. I notice on the reviews on Amazon.com that it has a ton of positive reviews but there are also quite a few people like me who are Gaiman fans who didn't care much for this particular book......so I guess it's just one of those books that just isn't for everyone. I wouldn't say I wouldn't recommend it, it just didn't do it for me. I'd actually be interested to see someone I know like Leblanc read it so we could discuss it and see if his opinion of it differed from mine any. It certainly didn't scare me away from reading Gaiman.....I just bought Anansi Boys in hardcover at McKay today.

Anyway, so now it's back to the non-fiction book in my cycle. This time, I've chosen The Masters: Golf, Money, and Power in Augusta, Georgia. I'm not a huge golf fan.....I don't play at all and only rarely watch it on TV, but the description on the back cover sounded interesting, so I'm going to try it. I'll let you know what I think of it soon.

I finally finished reading "The Words We Live By" and must say that I learned a lot....not only about the Constitution, but about history in general due to the information referenced by the author to help explain each part of the Constitution. She referred to a ton of Supreme Court cases....most of which I had never heard of. Next up, I needed to make a classic literature pick. I wasn't sure what I was going to read until I had a conversation with Leblanc this weekend. He was perusing my book shelves when he noticed "A Farewell to Arms" by Ernest Hemingway and mentioned that he had read it and loved it. So, I am about 50 pages into it now and am enjoying it so far but I am prepared to be depressed based on what I've heard about Hemingway's penchant for unhappy endings.

Any Jack Johnson fans out there? I know I'm a little late for New Music Tuesday, but if you haven't checked out his new album "Sleep Through the Static", it is very good. I have enjoyed all of his albums thus far. This one has a bit of a different sound, but is still an excellent choice if you are looking for music to just chill out to. I am amazed at the way Jack can make such mellow protest songs. Also, I love the fourth song on the album called "Angel". It reminds me of my Crafty Momma. Check it out if you get a chance.

As I had hoped, the good guys prevailed tonight sending the Evil Empire of the NFL (aka the New England Patriots) home in defeat. Darth Vader (aka Bill Belichick) and his team ran off the field to cry in the locker room without so much as a "good game" to the victors. The only Pats player I feel remotely sorry for is Junior Seau but, unfortunately, he just picked the wrong team to un-retire for. I also wanted to say too bad to Leblanc, but he does already have his Red Sox World Championship from earlier in the year and three other Super Bowl Championships for the Pats not too long ago.

I must say, though, that I thoroughly enjoyed watching "Pretty Boy" Brady get smeared throughout the game. That was great. My theory that Mr. Brady would not be all that great if he was not given 20 years to pass the ball by his O-line was proven absolutely true. Do you think he could have escaped the clutches of the D-lineman the way Eli did late in the 4th quarter to make a huge downfield throw? I seriously doubt it.

So, in closing, congrats to the New York Giants and Patriots, please enjoy the revenge beat-downs you will be receiving in the next few years from all the other teams in the NFL.

Update: OK, so upon watching Sportscenter, I saw that Vader did shake hands with Coughlin after the game and I admit when I'm wrong. My bad.

On the eve of the Super Bowl, I read this.

The Boston Herald quoted a source who said that on the eve of their first Super Bowl win, the Patriots videotaped a St. Louis Rams walkthrough. Former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh has hinted to a few media organizations that he has some seriously damaging info on the Pats' videotaping practices.

The Pats are denying this, but it is being reported by a newspaper from their own city.....what reason would they have to lie?

With all apologies to Leblanc, this puts the Patriots in the "Barry Bonds" category. It casts doubts upon the validity of all of their Super Bowl wins. In fact, the only people who will not be in favor of putting asterisks next to those achievements will be Patriots fans themselves. Leblanc has told me all along that he thinks Belichick will retire if the Pats go 19-0 and Michael Rosenberg, the author of the article linked above, goes even further to suggest that even if the Patriots lose today, it could happen as well as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will most likely deal out a lengthy suspension for Belichick if these allegations do turn out to be true.

I also agree with Rosenberg that this is not only a huge black eye for the New England Patriots, but for the entire NFL as well. Here's hoping that the good guys defy the odds and pull out the victory today.

So a few days ago, Leblanc tagged me for a meme where you set your MP3 player to shuffle and listen

So a few days ago, Leblanc tagged me for a meme where you set your MP3 player to shuffle and listen to the first 10 songs it spits out. I was a little reluctant at first for a couple of reasons. First, I use my MP3 player with my Rhapsody account and mostly just pick out a few albums I want to listen to and download them on there. I try to vary the genres to match my varying moods through the course of the week or however long it takes for me to get tired of listening to these albums. So, I figured there was a chance that at least one artist would have more than one song on the list for this meme, which would make it less interesting. The second reason was that I was unsure if I remembered how to set my cheap little Sansa MP3 player to shuffle. I did remember, however, and here are my results:

1. Please Don't Tell Her - Jason Mraz
2. Bleed the Freak - Alice in Chains
3. Josephine - Brandi Carlile
4. Just for the Record - Jordin Sparks
5. Sunshine - Alice in Chains
6. Shadow on the Wall - Brandi Carlile
7. Hold You in My Arms - Ray Lamontagne
8. Downpour - Brandi Carlile
9. Mr. Curiosity - Jason Mraz
10. Until I Die - Brandi Carlile

I thought that an artist would probably have more than one song on the list, but I never thought that multiple artists would have multiple songs or that an artist would have several songs in the list. Looking at the list, you would think that I only have like four albums on my MP3 player, but this is not the case. In addition to the artists above (all of which have only one album each on my MP3 player), I also have albums by Amos Lee, Third Eye Blind, and Emerson Hart.....not to mention a two-disc Anthology by George Thorogood and the Destroyers AND the "Singles" Soundtrack! Very interesting, no? This leads me to believe that my MP3 player has a mind (and musical tastes) of its own and is a very big Brandi Carlile fan.

As you may have seen over at Leblanc's, we welcomed an addition to our extended family on Tuesday, December 11th....just in time for Christmas! Madelyn Grace came into the world at 5:53 p.m., weighing in at 7 lbs. and 2 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches long. Crafty Momma and I arrived at the hospital just minutes before she arrived and were able to go into the room to visit with the proud new Momma and Poppa and snap a few pics of the beautiful new baby girl.

Being home all day with a small child who wants to watch Cartoon Network all day, I've watched about a zillion toy commercials. One in particular caught my eye. It's for a game called Battleground: Crossbows and Catapults.....where you have little figures of Orcs and Humans and you set them up and have battles where the little men sling toy projectiles at each other and try to knock each other down and destroy each others' fortifications. Where was this when I was a kid!!!???? I had to settle for setting up my Transformers (Autobots vs. Decepticons of course) with a friend and using rubber bands to shoot across the room to simulate the battles. I guess we had to be a little more creative back then but I still think I would have loved to have had something like this. Heck, I bet I could have Leblanc over and we'd have a blast with it even now that we are grown. I seem to remember that he was a Transformers collector himself and probably had similar ways to simulate massive robotic battles. Sorry to drag you into my Geekdom, bro!
