When I woke this morning in my hotel bed in Linz I was tempted to give up my intermediate goal of reaching Vienna on Saturday. Instead I wanted to lie in and rest my body. I think I pushed myself quite a bit yesterday. It was also overcast and as I watched the morning news, it became apparent that some nasty weather is on its way through Central Europe.

I eventually left Linz at about 10am. Today went really quickly despite the atrocious weather.

In the mid morning I passed through the former concentration camp of Matthausen although I saw nothing of interest that speaks to its past. I guess it is a history that the locals are not too keen to advertise.

I spent the second half of today's 125 km ride cycling in an electric storm. I still managed to set a cracking pace and seldom dropped below 25 km/h as I found myself singing "The wheels on the bus"... Am I going mad??

With about 30 km to go I started to notice that I was having some mechanical issues. In two of my lower gears my chain was sticking a little and I simply stayed out of those gears as I didn't feel like making a roadside diagnosis and repair in the driving rain. Instead I decided that I would like to have a service in Vienna while I check out the sites. I think all my cables have stretched since I bought my bike and its time to have them adjusted.

I spent about 30 minute cleaning my bike and gear of muck once I reached my overnight stop of Wachau and unfortunately I have noticed that my rear wheel is slightly buckled. I think it happened when I crossed a very stoney drain.

Today is a public holiday in Austria so I wasn't able to have my wheel trued today. I hope I have some luck tomorrow morning, otherwise I will get out the spoke key and see how I get on doing it myself. Its been a long time since I last trued a wheel.....

I have 105 km to Vienna and am hoping to be up early as I would like to arrive as early as possible. Tomorrow is also meant to be a very wet day. I hope that most of my stuff has dried by the morning.

Today I completed about 100km to from Passau in Germany to Linz in Austria. It was a very warm day and I appreciated the few mandatory ferry crossings that brought welcome breaks.

In the early afternoon I passed a rather fast mountain biker who later caught up to me and passed me. As he did I noticed that on his handlebars and helmet he had an emergency telephone number inscribed. I recognised it as a Zurich number and pulled up to him to have a chat. He too had started in Zurich and is heading to Vienna.

We cycled together for about 2 hours before we pulled into Linz in the early afternoon. Having some company for a few hours made the going a lot easier and the hours passed a lot quicker.

Linz too looks like a really pretty city but I was very tired and soon fell asleep. I woke in the early evening and made my way out to explore the city when the heavens opened up and I hastily returned to my hotel.
