When I was a kid I used to go to the Colorado Renaissance Festival outside of Larkspur. Set in the beautiful pine forests of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, this festival features a cast of hundreds of authentically costumed merrymakers living and working throughout the “village.” With performances continually taking place upon the festival’s seven stages, the illusion of a rollicking Medieval festival day is created. One of my favorite parts of the festival was the sword fights – knights would battle bandits as the audience watched with amazement at the swordsmanship and athletic daring. At the festival they sell small wooden swords that you can take home and practice with – envisioning yourself fighting off the King’s enemies with skill and bravery. I guess because of these early experiences I’ve always had a fascination for this period in time, and especially about the swordsmanship that required to survive. The recent book by Jack Sorenson took me back to these early days and let me re-imagine

Sword of Eibhlinis the story of two master swordsmen, although in this case one is a woman. Edwin and Eibhlin grow up in the countryside of medieval England, learning all of the tricks and techniques involved in being an expert swordsman. One day, however, a marauding group of bandits come and pillage the village. Edwin and Eibhlin attempt to protect the people against these men, but are overwhelmed by their sheer number. Captured, they are carried across the landscape until they no longer recognize the countryside.

At the mercy of these evil men, they are forced to partake in their ways as they move from village to village looting and stealing. Soon, however, they are able to escape, but only at the cost of their lives – or so they both think.

I never like to give away the twists and turns of a book; that is half the fun of reading. What I will say is that although you most likely have read a number of medieval fiction books (and watched their Hollywood adaptations), the story found in Sword of Eibhlinis unique. Filled with the usual sword fights, bandits, lost romances, and tales of blacksmithing and armor, the underlying story is what carried me through this book. Is Edwin dead? Is Eibhlin? Will they ever free themselves from their past and the bandits who chase them? Will they ever see each other again? And will their love finally be fulfilled?

If you are looking for an adventure novel to read, then Sword of Eibhlinmay just fit the bill. Well written, filled with emotion and drama, the book is a great way to spend several afternoons. To complete the experience, I’d suggest reading it under a tree or against a rock in a meadow… maybe you too will be carried off to an ancient time and place.

Sometimes when I have time to be alone with my thoughts--against all my best intentions--I sit in my favorite tree and watch the changing leaves, and I let my thoughts wander.

Of course lately they wander South Somewhere. I whisper his name, his True Name, and I ask him to tell me how he is, where he is, anything. Today I felt a sudden sting of pain in my ribs, which made me nearly fall out of the tree.

"Please," I try to say to him. "Please, tell me what's going on." I never know if he can hear me or when he can. I can never see a thing. I don't know if he's still blindfolded or if he just is refusing to let me look. I don't always know what's from him or what's my own imagination. Some cold, musty cell somewhere; exhausted, in pain, and still fighting to keep it from me. He thinks he's protecting me by doing this, I know. Doesn't he understand that I'd rather bear the pain with him than not know what he's enduring? Than to have him hide from me? Doesn't he trust me?

That doesn't even make sense for me to say. But for ten years, at very least, I've had the dreams. I've had him whisper to me that he's coming, that there's hope...and now he's so silent all the time.

His captors are doing their job well; they're succeeding in torturing me.

Most representations of knitting in art have been produced from the 18th century on. This painting, by Meister Bertram von Minden, Germany, was done near the end of the 14th century. Titled "The Madonna Knitting Christ's Seamless Garment", it represents the Virgin Mary making a tunic in the round, using 4 needles. The tradition of the seamless garment describes a scene at the crucifixion, when the Roman soldiers cast lots to win possession of it, not wishing to tear up such a valuable

item of clothing. Two churches, the cathedral at Trier and the parish church of Argenteuil, claim to have possession of the actual garment. Trier claims that it was brought to them by the Empress Saint Helena, who also is supposed to have found the True Cross. The French believe that theirs was brought there by Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor. Both claims date from the 1100's.

Most probably, Christ's clothing was woven, not knitted. But it's a lovely painting and a lovely thought.

P.S.: ovviamente chiediamo scusa a Dio...

Tutti imbroglioni!

I can also fix garments that need hemming, patching...etc. I try my best to use notions that were used in the time period, but I can not make the garments exactly historically accurate because of the way they were formed. I will make my garments to fit the natural body form rather than a tight corset.

Tales Worth Arena: Death Watch is a very good RPG game in which you will guide a hero from pure beginner to a master level. When the game starts we have three different classes to choose from, Psionic, Juggernaut, or Engineer. All three classes have their different abilities and strengths. When the game starts then it's a good idea to train so you get some abilities that you then must make use of the stadium when to meeting an opponent. In the fighting, it is then to use the talents that have been trained to be able to damage opponents while the case to defend itself successfully. There are also various magical objects that give holders a little extra advantage in the fight. Win the fight to get a little gold and experience, which makes it possible to learn more skills or deal reached in the city shop. There are also different quest that you can take adventure into. One of the best flash games of the RPG in a long time.

Ugh, we're in for a rough autumn. Some of the Royal tax collectors say that Archimides owes a sizeable portion of tax from a couple years ago. We both think it's untrue but what can one do against the Crown? So we reluctantly sent most of our savings their way, just to get them off our backs.

I solemnly cleared away the smith equipment and put it into storage--tears stinging my eyes all the while as I did--to put the space up for rent. We need to sublet, to recoup some of the losses we've had, to assure we'll be all right this winter. Well, I mean, one way or another we'll be all right, if it means getting a smaller place and closing the shop; but to get through this winter and still have a source of income, we need, well, more income. So, next door to Living the Dream sits a 63 sq. meter shopfront with a studio room upstairs. I'll rent it to almost anyone.

Almost.

Meanwhile I await word from Piggy or from my satyr.

A rough autumn indeed.

Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

This is the third book in the Inheritance Series, which is summarized in a different article. Eragon, a Dragon Rider, and Saphira, his dragon, have won several battles against the Empire and now have to fulfill the seven promises they made to the Varden, the Dwarves, and the Elves. First, Eragon has to fulfill his promise to his cousin Roran, which is to save Katrina, Roran's future wife, from the monstorous Ra'zac.

If I were to be friends with one person in this book, it would be Oromis, Eragon's mentor. He is very powerful and wise, but I would not want to be on his bad side.

This book was fairly easy, but I would not recommend it to just anyone. I would recommend it to anyone who was interested in fantasy, dragons, and war, or just a good read. This series has notably long books, and I would not recommend it to someone who can't handle books over 100 pages.

No. of Pages: 763

(Howe, Nicholas, Anglo-Saxon England and the postcolonial void, in: Postcolonial Approaches to the European Middle Ages, hg. v. Kabir, Ananya - Williams, Deanne, S. 25-48)

The accepted idea, from time immemorial, seems to have been that you should not dress like you want to dress; you should dress like everyone else wants you to dress. So if, for example, you were raised in a time and place where it was normal to wear a double-breasted suit or a rope tie, you should not do that anymore if you find yourself in another time or place -- not, that is, unless you are trying to make some kind of statement, and you are comfortable with people staring at you. Instead, you should dress like everyone else dresses. Likewise with the way you cut your hair and even the words you use to express yourself.

It could be more interesting, possibly less expensive, and, for many, easier and more gratifying to be able to dress as you see fit. So if, for example, you think hippie beads, a long beard, and a tie-dyed T-shirt really express who you are, or if you think you look your best with a beehive hairdo, it should be OK for you to adopt that look until you're ready for something else.

An insistence upon uniformity of appearance rewards those who do the best job of copying other people, and punishes those who see or think creatively. Some people do medieval or Renaissance re-enactments, or they study Latin, and in those specialized context it may be OK for them to use words or wear clothing from the period; but maybe they would sometimes like to bring a bit of that into their daily lives. Our world would be richer if we were more freely exposed to clothing -- and, for that matter, ideas -- from other present and past (and imagined future) cultures that more accurately reflect how we think or feel on a given day.

One way of phrasing this goal is to point out that, as we have become more tolerant of differences among people, we have removed ways of making them feel bad, and have instead improved their chances of feeling accepted for who they are. It turns out that who they are is much more complex and interesting than previous generations realized. They are apt to be happier and more productive, and less likely to fall into depression, sabotage other people's relationships or careers, or shoot up the Post Office, if we accept them regardless of body size or shape, color of skin, and so forth. This proposal merely takes that realization into the realm of fashion and style.

Tripoli, festa e onorificenze.

Giulio Andreotti.

Tripoli bel suol d'onori.

I'm sitting in the empty smithy stall, warming myself from the bitter winds outside by the red embers in the forge. I keep asking myself the same question over and over again, as though some answer could be had. But there is no answer to "why".

I first had the vision just before sunset, yesterday. It was brisk and confusing, like an uninvited thought; I doubted how real it was. He showed me the memory: the shout of the lookout from the crow's nest, him running up above deck, the distant glance of a small ship with red sails--its colors too far to be seen--the roar of cannon fire, the panic of the passengers mingled with the shouts of the crew, a loud crash, and darkness.

An hour later, maybe more, I heard him whisper into my thoughts: "I'm alive." Bound, blindfolded, injured, but alive. He's shutting himself off to me, I can feel it in my thoughts and my daydreams. He probably doesn't want me to know how much he's suffering. Trying to protect me.

I couldn't sit idly by and do nothing, but I'm tied here by my business and my responsibilities. And what good can one hundred thirty pounds of elf do against an unknown enemy? If I were bigger, stronger, perhaps...that was when it hit me.

When I first made the acquaintance of the little blue dragon and arranged to hire her to watch my surplus wealth, she picked the name "Piggybank" for herself. She's now a juvenile, and lives under the docks near the abbey. And I knew today she would be along for a visit, since it was payday.

She didn't disappoint; I felt the rush of wind from her blue wings as she touched down just outside the shop. As she enjoyed the large salmon I'd caught for her, I told her of the situation. She enthusiastically volunteered before I even had to ask her.

And so, she's headed south. That's all we know of where to look. And I'm waiting. And it's cold, and so very vast, outside.

The page for September in this book of hours represents the grape harvest at the foot of the Châtea

The page for September in this book of hours represents the grape harvest at the foot of the Château de Saumur, which is special to me because I had the opportunity to visit it a few years back. It is a truly memorable sight, rising above the Loire at the edge of town. The chateau was owned by a nephew of the Duc de Berry, Duc Louis II d'Anjou, who had completed its construction at the end of the fourteenth century. It appears here in all its fresh newness: chimneys, pinnacles and weather vanes crowned with golden fleurs-de-lys reach to the sky.

Although the crowning crenellations have disappeared, and is easily recognizable in this miniature by the buttressed towers, battlements, glacis, and general arrangement of the buildings. To the left is a belfry that might belong to the church of Saint-Pierre; next is a monumental chimney with secondary stacks undoubtedly belonging to the castle kitchen; and last, a drawbridge entrance from which a horse walks while a woman with a basket on her head approaches.

In the foreground, the harvest of the grapes is taking place in the vinyard. Aproned women and young men pick the purple-colored clusters of and fill baskets to be loaded into hampers hanging from the mules or into vats on the wagons.

In the tympanum, Virgo and Libra dominate the night sky, and Phoebus, as usual, drives the chariot of the sun.

Some good people are moving out of Northfarthing. It sort of baffles me how such a beautiful, peaceful, and interesting place can have so many vacancies. And we're good people. We're not perfect but we're good. One could not ask for a better landlord than DonPaul. He's there when you need him, not when you don't. He's flexible to negotiations and charges no more than $4/prim for rent (and that's when you have a place that's already all built and furnished). And he is a true friend. So, guys, really, if you want to move to a lovely medieval setting where slavery is outlawed and RPing is an option rather than a necessity, really, talk to me or search up Northfarthing. We don't bite, honestly. Unless you're a griefer. Then it's chomp chomp. We have everything available from a cottage to a castle to your own parcel of land.

In other news, I got my friend Shea all garbed up yesterday. I mean, I like the polo shirt and jeans and all, but he looks so good in medieval garb that it makes me wonder why I didn't drag him into my shop sooner. I made him look knightly for under $150L and I can for you too.
