The Janitor
============

An unemployed man goes to apply for a job with Microsoft as a janitor.

The manager there arranges for him to take an aptitude test (Section: Floors, sweeping and cleaning).

After the test, the manager says, "You will be employed at minimum wage, $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address, so that I can send you a form to complete and tell you where to report for work on your first day."

Taken aback, the man protests that he has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this the MS manager replies, "Well, then, that means that you virtually don't exist and can therefore hardly expect to be employed."

Stunned, the man leaves.

Not knowing where to turn and having only $10 in his wallet, he decides to buy a 25 lb flat of tomatoes at the supermarket. Within less than 2 hours, he sells all the tomatoes individually at 100% profit. Repeating the process several times more that day, he ends up with almost $100 before going to sleep that night. And thus it dawns on him that he could quite easily make a living selling tomatoes.

Getting up early every day and going to bed late, he multiplies his profits quickly. After a short time he acquires a cart to transport several dozen boxes of tomatoes, only to have to trade it in again so that he can buy a pick-up truck to support his expanding business.

By the end of the second year, he is the owner of a fleet of pick-up trucks and manages a staff of a hundred former unemployed people, all selling tomatoes.

Planning for the future of his wife and children, he decides to buy some life insurance. Consulting with an insurance adviser, he picks an insurance plan to fit his new circumstances. At the end of the telephone conversation, the adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents
electronically.

When the man replies that he has no e-mail, the adviser is stunned. "What, you don't have e-mail? How on earth have you managed to amass such wealth without the Internet, e-mail and e-commerce?

Just imagine where you would be now, if you had been connected to the internet from the very start!"

After a moment of thought, the tomato millionaire replied,

"Why, of course! I would be a floor cleaner at Microsoft!"

Author Unknown

Moral of the story:

1. The Internet, e-mail, and e-commerce do not need to rule or determine your life.

2. If you don't have e-mail, but work hard, you can still become a millionaire.

3. There are much greater connections than the Internet.

4. E-mail addresses are free, and companies are begging you to take one. What does that tell you?

5. Seeing that you got this story via e-mail, are you closer to becoming a janitor than you are to becoming a millionaire?

If the answer is janitor, then e-mail is obviously not the key to money.

6. If you take what you have, and multiply it each day, not only will you become a millionaire, you will also become a billionaire. That equation works for all things in life.

7. It is far better to be a happy janitor than an unhappy millionaire, but all other things being equal, it is better to be a happy millionaire than a happy janitor. You can help more people.

8. Closed doors are often blocks to the wrong path.

9. Unbeknown to most, the janitor in many corporations, is actually happier and sleeps better than the CEO.

10.It's really not the job that's the bottom line to your happiness.

REALLY!

As many gamers (and even non-gamers) may have noted, Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto made an an

As many gamers (and even non-gamers) may have noted, Nintendo mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto made an announcement at E3 basically stating that Nintendo would not be catering specifically to core gamers at E3 anymore. Predictably, a million voices cried out in terror, mostly Nintendo fans either feeling neglected or fearing the worst for their beloved gaming company. I actually remember nay-sayers predicting the downfall of Nintendo, that they would lose customers, the fanbase would collapse, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on, and for a while, I was thinking the same thing myself.

And then I considered something. Nintendo has three main competitors at E3 every year: Microsoft, Sony, and the computer gaming industry. Microsoft produced its first console seven years ago, releasing the first Xbox to the North American public in late 2001. In comparison, Sony has been in the business more than twice as long, with the PlayStation being released to Japan in 1993. Computer gaming arguably started a little bit before that. Nintendo released the Famicon in Japan in 1983. They've been doing video games for 25 years now. So why haven't you heard anything about a "25 year anniversary"? Nintendo has been around since 1889. They must be doing something right. But what is it?

If Wikipedia is to be believed, and the list of best-selling video games of all time is true, there are some things that can be gathered here. As you move down the list you can spot some of the games that have generated a lot of excitement in the past few years. Halo 2 and Halo 3 sold approximately 8 million copies each, which is nothing to laugh at. Call of Duty sold at most maybe 5 million between the two console "giants" and the PC. GTAIV sold 4.6 million between both of the consoles. Wii Play sold 11.5 million. Wait, what?

That may sound surprising, but it starts to make sense the more you look at what kind of games are top sellers. Wii Sports is at 21.56 million copies. Nintendogs has sold 18.67 million copies. Even looking at the PC, the most flexible system there is, The Sims dominates the list with 50 million copies of the game sold to the public. The only game even close to that in the console market is the original Super Mario Bros., a 23 year old game, clocking in at just over 40 million copies sold. The next highest is Tetris, again a Nintendo offering, 33 million.

What the numbers mean, then, is that Nintendo is in fact far from collapsing. On the contrary, they're actually rolling in it. A lot of it. Nintendo is doing things just as they always have, appealing to a wide audience instead of a core of avid hobbyists. It's been working for the past 25 years, and they have no reason to change their formula. The core gamers who have stuck with Nintendo have been rewarded with such gems as Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, and Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii, just to name a few. The DS isn't being left out either, getting its own offering of Call of Duty 4 and rumours of a GTA title lined up for it as well.

So, are us core gamers really that important in the big picture? No, not at all, and while Nintendo does try to make ends meet for core gamers, they have made the right decision to target the broader audience. Should we be bitter towards the gaming giant for assigning core gamers to second fiddle? Probably not, and our effort could be better directed towards thanking the corporations such as Microsoft and Sony, as well as the countless developers and publishers out there, that continue to target the core despite the potential for so much more.

I am going to build a list, and update it as I learn more:

All in this list appear to have been manufactured by Foxconn, although possibly sold under different brands, they all appear to be using a Foxconn-customized American Megatrends BIOS, these boards will only effectively work with Microsoft Windows and are therefore defective.

I am the one who discovered and reported the issue, it is described in detail here:

Comment: I'm the not-so-proud owner of an HP Pavilion d6230br notebook (it has a Foxconn motherboard) and it has its problems with ACPI support. I followed the steps you've done to disassemble the DSDT and found similar problems, with apparently a specific code to point to another completely different table if the OS is Linux. Recompiling the dsdt.dsl file without modifications generates two warnings. The code is similar to your motherboard's BIOS', but not equal, and as I'm not knowledgeable enough about DSDTs I'm stuck. Could you help me to find out what's wrong?

If you are using any of these motherboards/computer systems, please contact the company that sold it and demand either (1) A BIOS fix. or (2) A full and complete refund or exchange.

-and if this does not happen-

Contact the Federal Trade Commission and your state's attorney general, and let them know that you were sold a computer motherboard, under the false pretenses that it supported the ACPI standard, which it does NOT.

Remember that the board maker is essentially telling you that you must run an operating system from an abusive monopoly, who has consistently betrayed the trust and privacy concerns, indeed their own policies on privacy matters, locks the user down with digital handcuffs, and is actively racketeering, this may be a point to bring up in your correspondence with the Attorney General's office, the FTC, and the Better Business Bureau:

The Cranky PM has gotten herself into a big snit over a Business Week article about a day in the lif

The Cranky PM has gotten herself into a big snit over a Business Week article about a day in the life of a "Product Manager" at Microsoft. Among other things, the PM, Scott Buchanan, a recent grad of the Kellogg MBA Program, says that he's "not technical", and that it took him "30 minutes just to find the latch" to open his laptop. He also describes his role as "all about unlocking the value" in MS products, specifically Office which is his area of responsibility. He states:

My job is to develop strategies and tools that make the job of deploying and adopting our software as clear, simple, and inexpensive as possible.

Cranky takes this poor soul to task, decrying at the end of her post "They call this guy a Product Manager?":

The Cranky Product Manager calls bullshit. This guy is in post-sales, not PM. What, do they give out Product Manager titles like they are soy sauce packets in Redmond? To fist-pumping morons who can't even open their laptops? Something tells me he wouldn't make it through the Google interview process...

So a couple of things. While the CPM has the right (in fact an obligation given her persona) to be Cranky -- she once wrote on this very blog -- "the CPM’s blog is 'The CRANKY Product Manager', not the 'I-Love-Everyone-And-Everything Product Manager.' -- this time, it's not really warranted.

As some of the comments by readers of her post have stated, Product Management at Microsoft is really more outbound and marketing focussed. In fact, Microsoft defines Product Management on their website:

As a Product Manager, you have the freedom to run your own business and the resources to make a global impact. The ideal candidate possesses excellent marketing and business analysis skills, well-developed strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate and coordinate with a variety of product development, marketing, sales, and business development teams.

Note the complete lack of any need for "technical" skills.

Now contrast this to Program Management at Microsoft, which is probably more like what Cranky views a Product Manager should be:

Program managers are customer focused, working to ensure that the products Microsoft produces will delight users and enable them to do their best. Program management is also an opportunity to flex technical muscles: your technical decisions and direction are what drive products and features through to completion.

Note that they are "customer focused", and their work and products should "delight customers". Seems more like the traditional Product Management role, though more technically focused than in some companies. I think that MS's Program Managers are really Technical Product Managers, and their Product Managers are more like Product Marketing Managers (in my view of what TPMs and PMMs do).

Regardless of the names, Microsoft has defined and used these roles for many years in their organization. Google, as another example, has a different view of the PM role.

In the end, unlike in the movie Highlander, there can never "be only one" definition of a product manager in a technology company. Some will be more business focused, some more technical. The objective for the larger PM community is to ensure that the business community understands the role and value of the Product Management function and for us to continue to define and hone our profession.

On that note, take a look at this series of articles that I wrote on the subject, and Adam Bullied's post entitled "The Product Management Manifesto".

Saeed

P.S. Oh yeah, please vote for us on the ComputerWeekly IT Blog awards.

While Microsoft has only just begun fighting the perception problems surrounding Windows Vista, the company is already thinking and planning way beyond its latest operating system. We all know that Windows 7 will build on top of the foundations laid by Vista, and that it will include a fancy multitouch framework (and a mysterious new taskbar). According to Microsoft, Windows 7 is still on track for January 2010, and in a memo to his employees, CEO Steve Ballmer outlined some interesting new approaches the company might try with Windows 7 - including being just a little more like Apple.

It is a more or less generally accepted fact that Apple 'has it easy' when it comes to developing certain parts of its operating system when compared to Microsoft. While the former needs to address a mere handful of hardware configurations, the latter has to provide support for a more or less infinite amount of possible hardware combinations. Apparently, Steve Ballmer agrees with this, and notes in his memo that Microsoft's commitment to providing choice (when it comes to hardware, I assume) interferes with the company's ability to provide a decent user experience.

In the competition between PCs and Macs, we outsell Apple 30-to-1. But there is no doubt that Apple is thriving. Why? Because they are good at providing an experience that is narrow but complete, while our commitment to choice often comes with some compromises to the end-to-end experience. Today, we're changing the way we work with hardware vendors to ensure that we can provide complete experiences with absolutely no compromises. We'll do the same with phones - providing choice as we work to create great end-to-end experiences.

What that exactly means remains to be seen, but we can be pretty sure Microsoft wants to at the very least prevent the utter disaster where loads of OEMs created sub-standard hardware that simply wasn't cut out for running Vista, or where Microsoft itself marked computers Vista-capable, while in fact they were barely Vista-possible. Some Apple/Mac websites even go as far as to say that Microsoft will "mimic the experience offered by the Mac maker", but I don't believe we'll see Microsoft coming out with computers themselves, or even reference boards. A firm tightening of a possible "Windows 7 capable" campaign seems a lot more feasible.

 And sensible.

And let me be the first to say: HOLY CRAP. There's so many games coming out, and so little time!

I followed G4 TV's coverage of E3, primarily on On Demand. There's a lot of games that struck my fancy, and looked really, really good.

First off, here's the titles that caught my eye: (In order. And remember, just becuase they caught my eye does not mean that I want 'em)

1. Resident Evil 5- Wow. Another R.E., eh? If it's anything like Resident Evil 4, I'll be blown away. From what I've seen, the game looks amazing, both gamplay wise and gaphics wise. I know that there has been a lot of controversy over the whole "killing black people in Africa". But seriously guys, race shouldn't be an issue any longer. A lot of videogames kill white people, (And RE 4 killed Latin guys), so why is there so much hype? Keep the race issue out of games, and just enjoy 'em. They're not racist, you're just killing mutant zombies in a different country. It keeps the games fresh- new locations are good. And you're not going to have asian people in Africa, now are you?

2. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (DS), High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance (PC, PS2, Wii, X360) They're actually making more of this crap? Well, it'll probably sell. But they need to stop making them. The movies were bad enough.

3. Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (PC, PS3, X360)
Now thats what I'm talking about. This looks to improve on the first. (Which was amazing) With more vehicles, weapons, and characters, (Not to mention a giant, fully destructible world) this game looks to be absolutely amazing. It'll be the next game I get, without a doubt. I love free-roaming games similar to Mercenaries, and this one looks to not dissapoint.

4. Spore (PC)
Now you have to had heard about Spore? Who didn't? I had the trial of the creator alone, and it looks absolutely amazing. 1000's of possible combinations, along with to being able to roam around a world created by you and other users is absolutely amazing. I'd get it, but my PC probably can't handle it. (It couldn't run Oblivion) What a shame. I was looking forward to it. Of course, if it can run the trial, perhaps it can run the real thing.

5. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (X360)
Being a huge fan of the N64 games, I cannot wait until this one comes out. I practically grew up on Banjo Kazooie! From the little that I've seen, it looks amazingly fun. I can't wait.

6. Gears of War 2 (X360) One word: Wow. This one adds some awesome new characters, and more colors as well. The only problem I have with it is that the game play looks to be the same- nothing new. Oh well, I'll still probably get it.

7. Halo Wars (X360)
Well, it looks as though this may be my first RTS game. I'm not usually a fan, but this looks impressive. Something about controlling people and vehicles from the Halo universe sounds extremely interesting and fun. The controls look good, as well as the game play. I'm definitely putting it on my list of games to get, although it's not coming out in quite a while.

8. Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise (X360)
When I saw this, I almost fainted. I am a huge fan of the original, and this looks absolutely amazing. If you say that this game is only for kids, you've clearly never played it. It's one of the most addicting games out there. And with 30 new Pinatas, and several environments, this game looks absolutely spectacular. I can't wait to get it.

9. LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
Although I don't have a PS3, this game looks to be one of the most unique and fun games I've ever seen. Being able to create your own little levels and play them with fun little characters is very appealing. Too bad I won't be able to play it.

10. Animal Crossing 2 (Wii, ?)

Although not listed, this game also looks really good. I'm a big fan of the one for the Game Cube, and cannot wait for it to come out. However, it seems a long way away, as we only got a short little video of it. (Along with no release date) So, I'll just have to wait until this one surfaces a little more.

11. Wii Music \

Another not-listed. This looks interesting, although I'm not sure how the controls will work out. Dependent on reviews, I may get it. I suppose I'll have to wait and see.

12. Guitar Hero 4

Rather than Rock Band 2, I decided on GH 4. While RB 2 is sort of samey, Guitar Hero 4 looks to set things apart with custom songs and a new drum set, not to mention many of RB's features.

So, you saw what I was interested in, but which games am I planning to buy soon?

1. Mercenaries 2

2. Viva Pinata 2

3. Animal Crossing 2

4. Halo Wars

5. Perhaps GOW 2

6. Guitar Hero 4

It looks like the year of the sequels to me.

What games do you want to get?

Microsoft just picked up a player in the data warehousing appliance space. interesting to see how they will slot something like this into their BI stack. For those of you who don't know much about this stuff. Microsoft has a really good set of BI Tools (analysis services, reporting services, proclarity) but their core relational database product doesn't scale up very well.. This has more to do with it's locking behavior than anything else... thus far, that has prevented Microsoft from getting market share in large companies that need to have thousands of users plugged into their warehouse(es)... As a byproduct, organizations that otherwise would otherwise be interested in Microsoft's BI offering simply pass on it, since it's "Not industrial strength". This could change that. I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

Mosha sounds quite excited about it... which, in my mind, makes it all sound very promising :)

In addition to the features for developers we showed in IE8 Beta 1, we’ve been working on great new features for consumers and IT professionals (as well as doing even more cool stuff for developers). I’m happy to announce that we’re on track to deliver IE8 Beta 2 this August when you’ll get a chance to see what we’ve been up to in these areas. Furthermore, in order to help us get even more feedback for this global product, we’ll be releasing Beta 2 in over twenty languages within a month of the initial release. This is a big step up from the three languages we released for beta 1 and much more than we ever did during IE7.

On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank you all for your help with beta 1. Since we released Beta 1 in March we’ve had over two million downloads so far with lots of good, useful feedback. We’ve been listening to that feedback and making improvements to our work on an interoperable platform that has full CSS 2.1 support, faster script performance, and significantly more capable developer tools as well as our cool new features like Activities and Web Slices. We’ve learned a lot from this first beta – keep the comments coming please!

Between now and August, there are a few ways you can prepare your sites for Beta 2. First, take advantage of Activities and Web Slices on your site. Second, make sure your site looks great in IE8; as you may recall, IE8 will use our new, more standards-compliant layout and rendering engine for strict doctype pages by default. This may cause IE8 to layout pages differently than IE7 did. If you haven’t had a chance to test your pages yet or don’t want to make changes yet, remember that you can have your site tell IE to use our IE7 layout engine for your strict doctype pages by adding the X-UA-Compatible http header to your HTTP headers or on a per document basis. You can learn more about how to ensure site compat with IE8 on our new IE Compat pages.

Tony Chor
Group Program Manager

P.S. In case you’re curious here’s the list of languages/locales we’re planning on for beta 2. We’ll keep evaluating the list based on our progress.

In cazul in care Google cumpara Digg, contractul va fi reziliat.
