Thank you all for praying and for your encouraging words to me. One of my dearest friends died today

Thank you all for praying and for your encouraging words to me. One of my dearest friends died today and it's really thrown me a curve. There will be a memorial service for him on Monday, October 13th in Mobile, Alabama. I'm not sure when or where, but I'll be there to grieve my friend. I think it's important to grieve, not as those without hope, but as one who has hope in Christ.

I Thessalonians 4:13-14 says: "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep."** Those who are "asleep" are meant to be those who are physically dead.

My hope is only in Christ. I only trust Him to resurrect me from the dead when I die just as He was resurrected from the dead by the Father when He died on the cross and was buried in the tomb.

**The Holy Bible: English standard version. 2001 (electronic ed.). Good News Publishers: Wheaton.

One bit of good news from all of this is that I have re-acquainted with some of my closest friends from the last 25 years. Many of them I've not spoken to in over 10 years, I'm ashamed to say. Everette brought us back together and I plan to stay in touch with them.

A final note - Everette was an organ donor. Because he was so young, some of his organs were very strong and will end up helping many people. God is redemptive meaning He brings good from bad situations.

-Mark (grieving my own sin but recognizing that I'm forgiven in Christ because Jesus is Lord)

By Susan Williams

After traveling and performing throughout the world 44 times, an organ professor in the School of Music will perform a hymnal-based performance on campus.

Douglas Bush will present an organ recital of different hymns. The performance will be Friday in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcomed to come.

The original recital date was Sept. 19 and was rescheduled because of technical problems that kept the organ from functioning.

The program consists of several different hymns used in religious practices. The first part of the program will be German hymns that are largely unfamiliar to American audiences. The second part will feature pieces from the 18th century focusing on counter-point, which is how different composers approach the same song. Bush said that one example is a series of pieces on one chorale written by three different composers and between those three composers there are eight different variances of this hymn.

Along with German hymns and counter-point, a series of 19th century composers will be performed. Bush will play three LDS hymns and two pieces he composed.

The choice of performing shorter pieces enables more mixture between the songs.

"The theme of hymn settings permeate the program," Bush said. "Another advantage of that for the listener is that the pieces in themselves are not lengthy drawn out pieces, which provides greater variety, color and uses of the organ, in a way that is different if I were playing lengthy pieces that last 25 minutes. This allows for a lot more contrast."

Jerry Jaccard, music education teacher in pedagogy, has known Bush for 15 years. They became close friends because of Swiss ties; Bush served his mission in Switzerland and Jaccard is of Swiss descent.

"I first connected with Doug because it is so easy to appreciate how Christ-like he is," Jaccard said. "He is full of love and loves his students."

Jaccard and Bush have traveled to Hungary together to learn more about the culture and music. Bush is interested in learning about organs and music in Hungary. Jaccard said on their trips Bush asked local organists about music they are composing or if they know of anyone creating new music. It is one way he refreshes and expands his repertoire.

Bush said organ music is based on hymns because one of the primary functions is religious use.

He said that he, like many other organists has assembled an extensive cross section of hymns. Organists accumulate this knowledge of hymns because the organ is tied to the music of the church and a majority of the hymns were intended for church use.

I can't say that that I had any knowledge about this affair before I stumbled across this article on the National heritage board's (RAA) webpage. By chance I opened it and found an interesting article regarding a subject I otherwise probably never would have stumbled upon; an organ façade and the fights concerning its restoration or not. In this case the reinstatement of Ivar Tengbom's organ façade in St Nikolai's Church Halmstad.

The article concerns the issues on the restoration, the history of the façade, about the church's purchase and installation of a new organ even though Tengbom's was considered a cultural heritage and legally protected and therefore was to be restored and reinstated. An interesting tale of a struggle between different interests.

Originally this article, written by Marianne Lundberg and Niclas Fredriksson both working at RAA, was published in Orgelforum (3 2007:3 p. 12-16).

Well, read all about here;

Tengbom façade on St Nikolai's Church in Halmstad; clarification (In English)

Tengbomsfasaden i S:t Nikolai kyrka i Halmstad– ett klargörande (In Swedish)

After reading the article, that is interesting from several angles, it strengthen my belief that we need a strong and alert, as in this case, Governmental supervision to ensure the cultural heritage in all its form.

Sometimes your guitar just will not sound right. Since guitars are usually made out of wood, it is affected by changes in temperature and humidity. A guitar that is not periodically adjusted properly will never live up to its full potential.

Intonation: Poorly adjusted intonation can cause a guitar to sound out of tune. It will make your guitar to sound messy when playing open chords, or sound slightly out of tune when you play higher up on the neck. Once you develop a good ear, this will drive you crazy. You can easily find a repairperson on Repairfinders.com to fix this for you quickly.

Intonation on a guitar should be adjusted if you ever change the gauge (thickness) of strings you use, if you change the action (distance between string and fret board) and at least twice a year (winter/summer). Some people suggest checking every time you change strings, although this is probably not necessary.

Intonation on an electric guitar is adjusted by moving its bridge saddles forward or backward. A bridge saddle is the piece of metal on the bridge that the string rests on. These can be adjusted with a small screwdriver (some guitars use an Allen wrench.) Your goal when setting the intonation is to make an open string sound exactly the same as the 12th fret on that string. In order to do this you will need an electric tuner.
In theory, the distance from the nut to the 12th fret should be the same as the distance between the 12th fret and the saddle. The 12th fret is supposed to be the halfway point. In reality, when we press down on the 12th fret, the string stretches, so it will generally sound a slightly higher pitch. To offset this annoying bit of physics we must adjust the 'length' of the string by moving the bridge saddles. If you move the bridge saddle back, you will increase the length of the string, therefore the guitar will sound less sharp when you fret notes.

If you are confused, forget about what I told you for a second, and follow the simple directions below or hop onto Repairfinders.com and have a qualified professional look at this for you.

Hit the 12th fret harmonic on your Low E-string. (You do this by lightly touching -not pressing- the string just above the fret. Chances are you probably knew that already.) Then press your finger down and play the 12th fret naturally. Your tuner (or your ear) will probably tell you that the two notes are (at least) a little out of tune.

THE BASIC RULE FOR SETTING INTONATION
If the 12th fret (pressed) sounds sharper (higher in pitch) than the harmonic, move the saddle back (away from the neck and pickups) and turn the screw clockwise.
If the note sounds flat, (lower in pitch) compared to the harmonic, move the saddle forward (toward the pickups)

Very Important: Remember to tune the string back to E each time you make an adjustment, before checking the intonation again. Often enough, the screws need to be adjusted very little. A tiny turn can make a big difference so start slow. Once you have properly intonated one string move to the next, until you are done with all six strings. The whole process rarely takes more than a half hour once you get used to it, but it may take a little longer at first, so hang in there. Once you are able, you will be proud of yourself.

Also, remember that the guitar, by its very nature, is an imperfect instrument. It is impossible to adjust intonation 100% perfectly. This might be obnoxious if you have an incredibly good ear, but you will just have to get used to it or give up the guitar.

It will be easier to get good intonation from your guitar if you use heavier gauge strings. If you use anything below, gauge .010 strings you may have problems. Personally, I use gauge .011 stings. Some people have trouble playing with heavy strings, but I swear, once you get used to them you will never go back. I strongly recommend using at least gauge .010

Also, do not adjust the action of your guitar or the truss rod after fixing your intonation. You would just have to do it all over again. If you need to adjust these things, do it first. These are other factors that affect the intonation of your guitar. If you use light strings, you may need to move the saddles back further, the same holds true if your strings are far from the fret board.

You must always keep your instrument finely tuned if you wish to receive many years of wonderful music from it. This is only an example of how easily someone in your area can assist you. However, no matter what kind of instrument you have, or whatever problem you may be experiencing, do not fear! On Repairfinders.com, it will take you only a couple of minutes to find a local business in your area to fix your guitar, piano, flute, saxophone, or any other instrument! So what are you waiting for? Jack is over and out.

¶

A two-LP set of international beats, breaks, sophisticate funk, sweet organs, harpsichords, heavy bass lines, late psychedelia, bits of playful experimentation and musique concrete, squelching analogue synths, harps, strings, flutes, and a dash of autumnal musing as only the early 1970s could produce. A 'found' mix from the 'legendary' French Musique du Monde label and their 'Le Tour du Monde' series, more volumes to follow.

¶

Featuring bands and artists from 18 countries, including the well known and the far from it, 'Volume 5' blends a wide range of genres through commonalities in instrumentation and production into a whole that is exciting and yet accessible. You'll hear Kraftwerk with Donovan; Moondog with Nino Nardini; Leo Kottke, Geraldo Pino, Eugene McDaniels, White Noise, El Kinto, Jean-Michel Jarre, Silver Apples, Roland Kovac, Shuggie Otis, Pierre Henry, Ennio Morricone's Feed-Back, et al. Track listing, liner notes and the download link (including full artwork), beyond the break.

Rough translation, back cover text:
"A grand tour around the world! From Kenya to India to Brazil to Germany to Jamaica, Canada, Denmark . . . and returning home to France. Around the world at 33 1/3 rpm, this is a fantastic voyage through cultures, and your ship is powered by the new rhythms and sounds sweeping the world. This is the sound of a new era, a new day in the world. On two long-playing records, this is where it's at! Take the ride, hear the voice of the world--'Le Tour du Monde!'"

Notes:
Following close on the unearthing of the killer gem 'Volume 7', this time we wind the world back just a couple of years to 1971 and the release of the even more precious and scarce 'Le Tour du Monde, Volume 5'. Spanning the very end of the 60s and announcing the arrival of the 70s, this compilation traverses fifteen countries, mining the emerging new hybrids that followed the psychedelic era. The French label Musique du Monde is better known for issuing some of the funkiest transatlantic "library records" of the era. But by 'Volume 5' they were already perfecting the art of taste-making, capturing the multitude of mutations unleashed by James Brown, the early Moog synthesizers, musique concrete production techniques, pure sunshine pop, and the progress of rock toward both greater intricacy (prog, krautrock) and greater force (punk, metal, etc.), all colored with a tinge of the devlish madness propagated by Miles Davis and his jazz fusion corps. Unusual for its time, du Monde eschewed divisions between "art music," "underground" forms of rock and funk, and top 40 artists. And so this double record nonchalantly places the likes of Donovan, Syd Barrett, and The Zombies' Colin Blunstone alongside experimental artists like Pierre Henry, Kraftwerk, The Sperm, or Ennio Morricone's ne-Gruppo Di Improvvisazione The Feed-Back; and then even more unusually, lumps all these with the literally 'commercial' (in the American sense) "sound library" masters like Nino Nardini, Alan Moorhouse, and Roland Kovac. Many of the avant gardists have become as well-known to us as the pop musicians, but at the time there were few who had access to such a global swath of the hip and cutting-edge; even today, a good number of these artists remain known only to niche specialists. Again I tip my hat to the elusive Jan Marine, director of Musique du Monde's then new compliation and distribution division. The back cover text is yet again eagerly generic. But as always with this series, the sounds are anything but generic. So once again--it's time to "take the ride," with 'Le Tour du Monde'. -- I. Sonnecomme, September, 2008

So, sometimes I try to check out people playing music pedals on YouTube -- for instance, the Wah Pedal, which I use for my organ. Every once in a while, you hear something cool and it is helpful. However, I've noticed a trend: no one is ever wearing shoes in these videos. It is a little creepy and uncomfortably intimate. I can assure you, I always wear shoes when playing my pedal. I don't know -- maybe that's because I'm not a weird geeky dude playing in my bathroom or something? Regardless, it is weird.

Nerves. Adrenaline. Joy. Stress. Like my sister's brother-in-law said it best, "it's all these emotions at once."

The big day has passed, and my sister is married to her love. Now to sum it in a short way...

We laughed, we cried, we ate cake, and went home. hehehehehehehe

On a serious note, the wedding went spectacular. I heard raves about it with exception of some disgruntled guests who were served champagne instead of sparkling cider. Oops!

There were many bloopers, but somehow they unraveled into a mysterious positive event which turned out, I'd say, at a scale of 1 to 10, a 9.5.

To top off the great weekend, the scales currently read at 170, and here's a picture (the first I've posted here) of the new and under construction me. :) And with me, of course, is my little brother and we're posing at Balboa Park in front of the famous organ.

*Music: MySpace Music launches tonight. I defriended Tom, everyone. It was time. [daily swarm]
*OH N

*Music: MySpace Music launches tonight. I defriended Tom, everyone. It was time. [daily swarm]

*OH NICE: Sigur Ros has a vlog? Watch it. There are small, non-motorized vehicles involved. [the slut]

*Mainstream media: The Houston Press digs chicks at music festivals. Overtly, no less! [digg]

*Organs: Is a 27-year-old one of the best to EVER play the organ? Personally, I like the guy at the Metrodome who does the Gary Glitter stuff. Chipper!

*Celebrity: Wired's Listening Post reviews celebrity bands. A few notes: if you are not INTO celebrities, please don't wander aimlessly into this realm. To begin with, no KEVIN BACON? 2nd: It is 30 ODD FOOT OF
GRUNT (not GRUNTS!). GAWD. [earfarm]

*U2: Bono and Sarah Palin didn't meet today, despite a scheduled appointment. Sad. For anyone who hates to see the forces of evil all marshaled in one place. (Not sure.)

*Politics: If you wish to stay informed, read this point / counterpoint regarding Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

*Copy: GooseGrade is a widget for blogs that allows readers to submit copyediting corrections.

Readers – if you exist – please know that clean copy (on this blog) is not my specialty. Because I usually write these two-line bullets after heavy drinking.

Also, if you click through on the GooseGrade link above you will find a promo video of Vampire Weekend singing "I Stand Corrected," which sounds a little Walkmen-like to me.

Speaking of which, here's an interview with The Walkmen. [buzzfeed]
