My appetite has returned, just in time too. I've been such a waste of space. No running, no working out, nothing. I refuse to let being turned down by the Marine Corps to interfere with the new athletic and healthy lifestyle I have assumed. Yet, here it is over a week since the last time I worked out. It won't change today yet because I'll be lucky if I get to sleep before I've been up for 36 hours. No sleep, not even a nap today. Too much to do.

One of my buddies stayed after work today to talk to me for about an hour. He's going through a rough spot and we've been such good friends I feel really honored that he would come to talk to me, despite that it adds extra stress to my life. I feel every one of my friend's problems almost like they were my own. We talked about life and goals and what the hell are we really here for... Ya, nothing like philosophical existential questions at 0030. However, they do seem to be more common then.

I'm a very goal orientated person, but as I was talking I realized that it's time again for another goal setting session with myself. Since Monday I have had some goals removed from my realm of possibility. I've been busy with my life, but have I sat down and actually reorganized my goals. Not really. I have an idea of where I want to be, but that idea in the back of your head is nothing compared to actual written out goal brainstorming.

So, here's as good a time as any.

Career: Law Enforcement

• 6 months: Move from dispatch to patrol. If I have to change jobs to achieve this goal, I will. (by March '09)
• 1 year: Finish my Bachelor's degree (non-law enforcement) and be started on my Associate's degree. (by Sept '09)
• 1 year: Either working special assignment in personal protection or working as a K9 Officer if I remain with the department I am currently working with. (by Sept '09)
• 3 years: Finished with Associate's Degree and looking for a federal job. (by Sept '11)

Relationship: John

• 3 months: Get this whole thing with John figured out. Our relationship will either be something we acknowledge in public to our friends or I will walk away. I've made this bargain with myself for over 3 months now, so let's see what the next 3 months holds. (by Jan 1st 2009)

Hobbies: Athletics

• 6 months: Run my first marathon of 20+ miles. (by April '09)
• 6 months: Get a good Triathlon worthy bicycle. (by March '09)
• 1 year: Compete in the "Ironman 70.3". (by Sept '09)

Thailand joins 4-nation joint patrol of straits of Malacca

BANGKOK, Sept 18 (TNA) - Thailand on Thursday signed an agreement with three partners in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) -- Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore – to conduct joint sea and air patrols of the Straits of Malacca starting from 2009.

Thai Supreme Commander Gen. Boonsang Niempradit and his counterparts from the three ASEAN nations signed two accords in the Thai capital, the Terms of Reference (TOR) and the Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) agreements.

Gen. Boonsang said after signing the agreements that the combined cooperation would ensure safety for international shipping in and around the Straits, a vital conduit of much of the world trade, particularly of oil bound for Japan and Korea.

He said Thailand would begin its air patrols in January while sea surveillance would start in October 2009.

Hailing the coordinated patrol agreement, Malaysian military chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz said coordination would be carried out in a centre in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital.

Since joint patrols began in the Straits of Malacca and their approaches by Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia in April 2006, the number of piracy incidents in the area had declined sharply, he said. In 2007, only one incident was reported.

Thursday's signing by Thailand followed cabinet approval on August 19 authorising the Royal Thai Navy to be responsible, with the government providing some Bt110 million annually to conduct the programme. (TNA)

He probably started out young with the rest of the growing gangs of neighbourhood teens who have plagued the Chinatown business district with destructive tagging or grafitti. The City of Toronto and the Spadina Chinatown Business association have a much more serious problem than homelessness.  It is a serious oversight on their part to blame crime in the area on the homeless - Chairman Stephen Chan blames the homeless for car thefts and other crime without any arrests data to uphold the claim. He need look no further than the youth gangs in his own neighbourhood - they are not homeless and they are not merely a nuisance on the streets. They are dangerous armed criminals. What would happen should the unarmed Intelligarde patrols come upon one of the armed Chinatown area criminals during a break-in, drug deal or other crime? The accused Qoheleth Chong is not homeless, but a resident of the same Chinatown neighbourhood.  And yet the business owners have been duped by their representatives that street homelessness is the top issue they are facing worthy of thousands of dollars of private policing.  The presence of those same surly security guards wil actually have a negative impact on their business as the public will react to confrontations between normally unobtrusive panhandlers and the guards who roust them. It's an accident waiting to happen. The public or perhaps even tourists are bound to get caught up in an altercation sooner or later. Even the presence of those security guards on public city sidewalks is an affront to our freedoms and actually endangers our safe enjoyment of public property. The sidewalks in front of the Chinatown businesses are not private property but public. If they have a concern about the homeless blocking access to their doors, or being drunk and disorderly in public (a small minority),  then they need only call police who will respond. Perhaps they should stop selling Chinese cooking wine at five bottles for five bucks.

If the Chinatown business community was truly concerned about the sidewalks being blocked by the homeless, a far worse problem is the huge number of illegal, unlicenced street vendors (see my photo at the top) who block anywhere from a third to a half of public sidewalks, as well as the huge mountains of garbage and empty boxes from the sidewalk Chinatown markets that are to be at curbside but turn walking the public thoroughfare into threading the eye of the needle. This is all about appearances - Chairman Stephen Chan is concerned the homeless are "unkempt", pehaps he could organize clothing bank donations from the vendors who block the sidewalk with clothing racks of T-shirts at a half dozen for $7.99 . According to the Sun news reports there were only 12 homeless rousted by security - they could have been clothed for less than twenty bucks.  Community outreach would be much more effective than community policing. The city and the Chinatown business community need to open their eyes to the real problems facing the area - why are your youth armed with automatic 9mm weapons? and where are the weapons coming from? - and stop blaming their problems on helpless homeless people living in crisis.

Here at Project417, I have almost ten years of experience doing outreach to the homeless on the Spadina Chinatown streets. The accompanying photo was taken by me on Spadina, just south of Kensington Market, to illustrate the growing number of elderly Chinese-Canadians who have been forced by community circumstances to resort to panhandling. Of course homelessness knows no race and the homeless panhandlers in Chinatown come from all communties right across the country, but there are a growing number of seniors in Chinatown who appear to have no visible means of support and have taken to the streets.

The threat to public safety through the presence of hired private security firms is real. As well as the assault on human rights, not just of the homeless, but the public who are being confronted and intimidated by what amounts to uniformed thugs on public city sidewalks. Chinatown BIA President, Stephen Chan claims the homeless are blocking doors, aggressively panhandling passers by and even says they are responsible for thefts from cars. The BIA is blind to the real crime problems in their own community and are misguided in targetting the homeless - my next post will outline alarming crime trends in the Spadina Chinatown as well as first hand encounters with Intelligarde bullies.

About these things I need to collect more pieces of information, as it's clear; these things I wrote here are those I've just read in a rush. But how many others I don't know nothing about. And all this in just 13 days...

One thing I know is that the family who house me in Belgium and who is particularly fond of Italy, has expressed many times worry and baffle about what the country they deeply love is becoming.

Not many people have been held by someone who is sure they’re dead. I have. Many times. To have someone mourn your death while you struggle to assure them you are alive is hard to bear. The delicate touch of a loved one embracing another is replaced by the grip of desperation. The grip is painful at times, and the struggle to comfort becomes a struggle to escape.

He thinks we are in Iraq.

Some nights, he checks my legs to make sure I still have them. Other nights, I am thankfully alive, but this causes him even more stress. He yanks me off the bed and holds me down for cover. Incoming he’ll yell.

At night we sit on the porch of our apartment and talk. The helicopters come over and his eyes are far away. We talk about the war and more we talk, the more I understand. He’s told me things I can’t imagine a normal man could bear. The blood and death was always assumed, but there are other things, things a person cannot get over in one lifetime.

So his mind betrays him and sends him back to Iraq each night. He triages and tags, cuts through clothing and sews up wounds. He goes out on patrol. And in the end, he screams, grabs me tight, and cries.

The war has to end sometime, but my biggest fear is that the physical war will end and leave him trapped in his mental war.

Several factors are always the same in law enforcement. You always have access to bribes. You know that going in - and it had better be an ethical question you sort beforehand.

Gangsters aren't especially in business to outsmart the law. It's always been easier, safer, to put someone on the payroll.

Officers in charge know this, as well. Aside from being potential centers for corruption, themselves. Another reason for a hierarchy of checks on any police system. You trust the guys running the game - but, you cut the cards.

FERTIG FUR KRIEG .....

The first patrol was fast paced, demanding, and had an absence of good rest. We pulled in just the other day and I was already thrust into the inport watch with only 2 hours of sleep from the night before. I must apologize as I read back into this blog, I'm a bit tired, and scatterbrained. Anyway the patrol proved very very interesting having worked with Iraqi Marines, British Royal Commandos, U.S. and Australian Navy etc. One of the days a certain Aussie vessel offered to do what they call a crossdeck where each ship essentially swaps a few crewmembers for a tour/ meet and greet. I got a really cool patch out of it from the engineering department fellas, hung out for a few hours, exchanged sea stories, and just hung out. Other interesting notes from the patrol:

- Launching flares at boats called dowhs for being where they're not supposed to be

- Doing quite a few boardings

- Visiting Kuwait

- Seeing places that contribute to you filling up your gas tanks

- Getting bit or stung by some nasty middle eastern wasp, I then judo chopped it and stomped on it.

- Shooting quite a bit of my arsenal onboard

- Having more responsibility than I ever have in the Coast Guard

I can't think of anymore at this moment, but that's the gist of it. 

Right now I sit on my new macbook, listening to my new itouch, wondering how the hell did this all happen. I'm very glad that I'm doing what I'm doing. There's a lot of growing pains going onboard right now with the command, but I'm sticking it through a lot better than the rest of the crew. Quite frankly it's nothing I haven't already experienced already, so I'm doing my job of informing the rest of my shipmates that we need to stick together and watch our mouths, deal with these problems constructively, and perform they way we need to perform. 

I've been talking to very few people since I've been over here. I call Ashley on a regular basis, then my parents, and I shot a call to John Z the other day. I keep trying to reach my friend Matt, but it wasn't until this morning when I checked my gmail for the first time in a month that I found out he was in in different country as well working for the Coast Guard temporarily. To all my other friends that I haven't got around to calling, I'm really don't want to have to validate the reason for not calling, I'm busy, but that doesn't mean I don't miss you.
