MOPS Convention

I attended my first MOPS (Mother's of Preschoolers) National Convention this weekend. Look at my beautiful leaders who came along with me! I love these ladies!

Picture if you will a herd, I mean a crowd of 5,000 women. Not just any women, but mother's of preschoolers, ALONE with NO kids, NO husbands, NO dirty diapers, NO cooking, NO laundry, NO whining and NO responsibility besides making their sessions on time! Can I just tell you, these were probably the happiest and most excited women you have would have ever seen!!!

There were women in feather boas, light up cowboy hats, glow in the dark necklaces, tiaras, you name it... it was there!

I feel for any man who was walking around this convention. ha! Even the men's bathrooms were converted for us. I like how they beautified the urinals.

This crowd was amazing. I couldn't believe how many women came from all across the United States to learn more about leadership and how to make a difference in other mother's lives through the word of God. It was such an inspiring trip that I'm getting a lump in my throat just thinking about it. I think I cried more in 2 days than I have in 3 years! ha. The good cry that makes you think about your life, dreams, relationships and what you can do to help others. The speakers, musicians and testimonies were incredible. I learned strategies to organize my family life and why I should live my dreams. I was reminded we aren't called to be perfect moms, but called to receive from God and give back to our children. I learned that we can't keep doing and doing, going and going... we have to rest. I could go on and on about what I took back from this weekend!

The most memorable moment by far was not seeing Lynne Spears (Britney's mama), Plumb or Avalon, but was when I was called to stand and speak before a group of, well... I don't even know how many? Let's just say a LOT, a crowd, a huge room full of women!! Did I ever tell you that my BIGGEST fear is speaking in front of a large group!! Can you say heart racing, pit sweating, panic??? I really don't remember walking up to the front of the room.... well, let's back up a bit.

In order to help get over this fear, I signed up for Carol Kuykendall's Up Front Speaking session. She's a well known author and speaker who I'm sure will provide wonderful tips. My friend Kerri also comes to this session. We're excited, so much so that when asked what we think when we hear the words public speaking, I shout PANIC!!! Carol then says, "Who was the person who just shouted panic?" Oh my! She was talking to me! So of course I shot my hand up in the air like Arnold Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter. Ooh-ooh-ooooh! It was me!!! She said to remember I answered this. Mmmmm. Does that mean I'll get a prize? Oh, I love prizes.

Back to the session.... Carol then had us roll play with a partner, practice introducing them as a speaker for our MOPS group back home. I thought Kerri and I did wonderful jobs. Maybe we didn't need this class after all??? Then Carol says, "Panic, where are you? You and your partner come on up here with me." What??? The entire room sucked in their breath. Remember they're all here because they have the fear also. After Kerri gave me the I'm going to kill you look from hell... we were all the sudden in the front of the room. Did I mention there were a LOT of women there? Wow! Carol wants to hear my introduction. Look at all the women. What am I supposed to do again? I look at Kerri, I didn't know she could smile and give the look from hell at the same time. It's now or never, so I go for it! Okay, so you know I screwed up my introduction! I totally forgot what Kerri was supposed to be speaking about. I think I did introduce her by name, but that's about it. I said a few things that made the room actually laugh, then we were back in our seats. Carol went on with her message. Talk about hearts pumping!! Kerri and I were ready to run a marathon! She didn't say a word and was as freaked out as me! ha. Boy what a scary moment, but what a fun moment all the same. I realized that if I can get in front of all of those women without puking, I might actually do okay someday with the right preparation and prayer.

The weekend wasn't all leadership sessions and crying:-) We had some fun girl time too! This was the shuttle we took to go out. Just had to get a photo of this sign! ha.

I want to thank the leaders from our group for taking the time and money to attend this conference. Also, a big shout out to our husbands!!! If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't have been able to have this wonderful experience. Yeah for dads!

I didn't know she had any new albums, but then again I'm forgetful and I haven't really been keeping up with music. Anyway, I found her page on MySpace, if you want to hear more of her music. It's all really excellent. And of course, she has her own website.

thank god for this weekend (see previous post plus the friday night out with former officemates). i needed this break. i needed this or i would've gone berserk. these times are tough. i'm tired, physically and emotionally. lots of things. just lots of things. i miss my family. i miss home. sometimes i'm not as tough as i'd want to be. sometimes, i'm not as fine as i seem to be.

Ei na, cum sa fiu. Fizic surprinzator de bine. In rest, nu ma gandesc. Nu poti pretinde ca nu a fost nimic, ca nu raman mereu urme, nu te poti gandi la lucuri trecute, prezentul e enervant daca il gandesc. One year ago today at this time I was having a 3 inch needle inserted into my spine, scared shitless that the anesthesiologist would hit a nerve like the first time I had a c-section 3 years prior.

Thankfully I didn't have to experience the most intense pain of my life a second time. This chic knew what she was doing. Then again it wasn't 2:30 in the morning and this time it was planned so it was a much easier situation for everyone. I laid there trying not to pass out with my legs feeling like two unmovable logs as the Docs pulled out this creature that had been calling my belly home for the nearly nine months. The doc held him up over my face so I could see him and warned me I about to get dripped on, which I did. Pretty gross to get dripped on by baby slime! I was so surprised by that I don't even remember what my son looked like the first time I saw him. I will never forget, however, the first time I heard him! He was protesting very loudly about

the whole thing. It was very clear by his sharp, loud cries that this was not enjoying this one bit and demanding to be put right back. The nurses and doctors laughed in amusement and I laughed nervously wondering if he was going to be one of those babies that cried constantly. One of the nurses remarked that it was the sweetest cry she had ever heard. It did have a sweet ring to it I admit, and it still does sometimes, depending on my and his moods! I spent the next 6 hours lying flat on my back trying not to throw up. I had some kind of reaction to the anesthesia this time and it was the most horrible nausea I've ever experienced! Nice to have a new baby, but over all, quite a terrible day, and the sleepless and painful night that followed was even worse. I think my little jaunt down memory lane should stop here because that night and the following day I felt pretty damn awful.

So today is his first birthday and I am in complete disbelief at how time flies. I am happy to have the first year and all it's trials and tribulations over but at the same time feeling like I am forgetting so much! Even though I was with him nearly every waking moment, I just can't really remember all the little stages, can't remember how little he must have been or savoring how his warm little body felt against my chest as he sighed sweet breaths of baby slumber. Even looking at pictures of him he looks so different now, it's as if he is a different being altogether. I guess I'm just feeling tinges of sadness at his babiness fading away and the upcoming toddlerhood before me. Time for tantrums, hitting, and biting....can't wait! I'm just not ready to stop giving him bottles and binkies. Not just yet. Why can't I just hit pause?

Just to get his point across, that yes he is turning one, he started walking last night. Not just taking a few steps, but WALKING across the floor. Just decided to stand up and walk, like he's been doing it for months. He probably has been able to do this for quite some time actually but just didn't feel like it knowing him. Such a stubborn little booger!

Too bad it's such a gloomy day out there but I am enjoying not feeling like I need constantly to be outside. On warm sunny days I feel like such a loser if I don't get out there and soak it all up so it's kind of nice to just get cozy and stay in for once. For the first time since maybe May it is colder outside during the day than it is inside. 67 in and 63 out. My feet are freezing and I'm wearing 2 layers on my upper body. I will wear flip flops and shun socks until my feet turn blue and lose all feeling in them damn it. I am in complete denial that summer is gone. Like if I just don't acknowledge it winter will take the hint and stay away. Old man winter you are not welcome here!

Cealaltă faţă a frumuseţii

Cel mai dăunător produs de frumuseţe semnalat de istorici este ceruzita, pe care femeile din Europa au folosit-o secole de-a rândul, şi care avea ca efect albirea tenului. Acesta era, de fapt, carbonat natural de plumb de culoare albă sau cenuşie, foarte otrăvitor, care cauza inevitabil moartea. Aşa că vorba românească „suferă baba la frumuseţe“ se bazează pe realitate. Crudă, după cum se vede. Un studiu realizat în Marea Britanie arată că, în medie, o femeie foloseşte zilnic cel puţin 12 cosmetice şi produse de îngrijire corporală, agreându-şi pielea cu 175 de chimicale.

Din păcate, toate aceste produse conţin ingredienţi care afectează, pe termen lung, pielea, dar şi sănătatea, în general. În momentul în care un produs este aplicat pe piele, moleculele sale sunt absorbite în sistemul vascular şi răspândite la nivelul ficatului, creierului şi rinichilor. Astfel, pot apărea dureri de cap, stări de vomă, iritaţii şi inflamaţii ale pielii, boli dermatologice, alergii sau chiar cancer. Experţii au alcătuit o listă care conţine cele mai de evitat ingrediente prezente în produsele cosmetice, iar noi am decis că trebuie să le cunoşti şi tu. Alegerea de a folosi sau nu produse ce conţin aceste ingrediente îţi aparţine în totalitate.

1. Sulfat de sodiu lauryl şi sulfat de amoniu lauryl

Descrise frecvent ca derivate din nuca de cocos, se găsesc de obicei în şampon, pastă de dinţi, demachiant, produse de igienă corporală sau spumă de baie. Ele pot provoca iritaţii severe ale pielii, sunt absorbite uşor în corp şi pot afecta creierul, inima, plămânii şi ficatul, ceea ce poate conduce la posibile probleme de sănătate pe termen lung.

Aceste ingrediente sunt suspectate că ar favoriza producerea cataractei şi că împiedică dezvoltarea normală a vederii la copii.

2. Metil/propil/ butil/ etil parabeni

Sunt conservanţi care se folosesc pe scară largă în industria cosmetică, în deodorante, produse de îngrijire a pielii şi chiar în produsele destinate copiilor. Sunt, de asemenea, folosiţi şi drept conservanţi alimentari (E-uri). Rolul lor este de a prelungi viaţa produselor. Sunt cunoscuţi ca fiind foarte nocivi, provoacă iritaţii şi reacţii alergice. Într-un studiu recent, cercetătorii britanici au descoperit o legătură puternică între folosirea parabenilor şi creşterea ratei de cancer de sân la femei. Oamenii de ştiinţă au descoperit o concentraţie de 90% de parabeni în tumorile mamare testate.

3. Propilene-Glicol

Prezent în multe dintre produsele de frumuseţe cum sunt cremele, demachiantele şi alte cosmetice, poate cauza erupţii cutanate şi dermatite de contact. S-a demonstrat că poate afecta rinichii şi ficatul.

4. Alcool Isopropil

Alcoolul este folosit ca solvent în multe produse de îngrijire a pielii. Poate cauza iritaţii ale pielii şi distrugeri ale stratului natural protector al pielii, lăsând cale liberă bacteriilor şi virusurilor. Poate, de asemenea, cauza îmbătrânirea prematură a pielii.

5. DEA (Diethanolamin), TEA (Triethanolamin) şi MEA (Monoethanolamin)

Aceste substanţe sunt solvenţi şi detergenţi puternici şi sunt folosiţi în cosmetice, creme pentru faţă şi corp, pentru efectul emolient. Pot provoca reacţii alergice, iar folosirea lor îndelungată a fost legată de creşterea riscului de cancer la ficat şi rinichi.

6. Aluminiu

Este un ingredient pe care îl regăsim în mod obişnuit în antiperspirante şi este suspectat de producerea bolii Alzheimer.

7. Uleiul mineral

Derivat al petrolului, se regăseşte frecvent ca ingredient principal în cremele pentru faţă şi corp. Uleiul pentru copii conţine 100% ulei mineral. Învăluie pielea ca un film, astupă porii şi opreşte eliminarea secreţiei sebacee din piele, ceea ce conduce la acnee şi alte afecţiuni ale pielii.

8. Polietilene glicol

Folosit în produsele de îngrijire a pielii, interferează cu echilibrul natural de hidratare al pielii şi poate cauza accelerarea proceselor de îmbătrânire a pielii, dar şi creşte vulnerabilitatea pielii la bacterii.

9. Talc

Face parte din familia mineralelor şi este folosit în pudrele cosmetice. Studii ştiinţifice au demonstrat că aplicarea constantă a pudrei de talc în zona genitală creşte de 3-4 ori riscul de cancer ovarian la fetiţe. Inhalarea talcului poate avea efecte pe termen lung asupra sănătăţii bebeluşului.

I've never been into scrapbooking.

Don't get me wrong...I think it's great. Seriously. I've seen quite a few scrapbooks & I consider them works of art. However, I'm bad enough as it is getting my pictures developed & put into albums. So, in my case, scrapbooking would never amount to anything more than many good intentions.

The other day though, it hit me.

My blog is, in a sense, my scrapbook.

It's my place to share my stories, pictures, thoughts & and talk with family & friends who I wouldn't normally see everyday. I've only been blogging for a little over 9 months now, but I really value this outlet & all that goes on here.

I took a video of my kids the other day. We were enjoying playing in the backyard & at the park. I'm by no means much of a videographer, but I love capturing these precious days of their childhood.

So, here's our "Summer Afternoon" set to one of my favorite songs, "In My Arms," by Plumb.

Mai multe hectare de mirişte au ars, joi seară, în Insula Mare a Brăilei. Joi, în jurul orei 0.30, în Insula Mare a Brăilei a izbucnit un incendiu de vegetaţie. Se pare că focul a fost pus de o mână criminală, însă până la acest moment nu a fost prins niciun suspect. Locuitorii Capitalei inspira zilnic noxele cancerigene emise de cele aproximativ 1,5 milioane de automobile din oras, in conditiile in care 70% din poluare provine din traficul rutier.

Emisiile autovehiculelor din Capitala au facut ca solul sa aiba un continut foarte mare de plumb.

Limitele maxime admise au fost depasite cu mult in Piata Rosetti, Piata Nicolae Grigorescu, Piata Sudului si Soseaua Kiseleff, conform ultimului raport privind starea factorilor de mediu in regiunea Bucuresti - Ilfov, realizat de Agentia Regionala pentru Protectia Mediului Bucuresti.

In zonele specificate, continuturile totale de plumb din primii cinci centimetri ai solului depasesc de pana la 3,6 ori valoarea limitei maxime admisibile a acestui element de sol (100 parti per milion).

Valori mari ale concentratiei de plumb se inregistreaza chiar si la adancimi de peste zece centimetri.

Solurile situate de-a lungul marilor artere de circulatie contin cantitati chiar mai mari de plumb mobil, valorile depasind de pana la 12 ori limitele admisibile.

Plumbul din sol este periculos fie ca in el se cultiva plante comestibile, fie ca ajunge pana la panza freatica si otraveste apele.

Unui bucurestean ii revin, in medie, 2,5 metri patrati de spatiu verde, fata de 12 metri patrati, norma recomandata la nivel mondial.

Praful, poluarea industriala si fonica, poluarea din traficul auto, emisiile de dioxina, calitatea apei potabile si reducerea spatiilor verzi au transformat Bucurestiul intr-o Copsa Mica nr. 2.

My mother's going to be so ashamed that my kitchen looks like this and doubly ashamed that I'm showing it off on the internet. But, this is a diary of sorts and therefore deserves complete honesty so that in a year, when my kitchen looks like this, I can say, "Remember what it used to look like? How'd we live with that for so long?" Not that it's ever going to look like that, but a girl can dream, can't she?

Speaking of dreaming, I think I'll be having nightmares about what lurks behind walls and under the nasty floor. And man alive! Look at what the top of this cupboard looked like when Matthew pulled it off the wall:

I chose not to investigate the suspicious yellow streak across the back part. Could be paint, could be pollen. Whatever it is, it's going out in the shed to be a part of Matthew's workshop, because that's what these cupboards are for folks- workshops, basements, garages- very utilitarian they are. And cheap. And ugly. And oh yeah, NOT made for kitchens. The last owners really knew how to do it up, let me tell ya.

One of the joys/fears/anxiety-inducing charms about living in a 90 year old house is that you just never know what you're going to discover hiding in the most curious places. We're still waiting for our landslide of money from some depression era penny pincher to come falling out of the wall. Even though that didn't happen today, Matthew did discover that there is siding behind the drywall in the kitchen- on an interior wall. Strange. You can see it in the photo below. It's the little green square amidst the blazing yellow. It makes it impossible for him to run the water lines through the wall for the washer, so he's going through the floor instead. It's days like these that I'm thankful I married someone who knows how to plumb a house.

In the corner you can see the brick chimney and the hole near the top for the wood burning stove to vent. Don't know where the stove went, but that's alright with me since I prefer modern appliances. You can also see where the dirty cupboard was. And what was underneath the fridge. When we moved in, I refused to move it to see what was underneath. It was pretty disgusting in our last house, so my preferred method this time around was ignorance. Pure, blissful, ignorance. And I knew today would eventually come and ruin that ignorance, but it would be quickly followed by new flooring. Which will then be followed by more dirty floors. But it will be my dirt baby, all mine.

On a completely different note, I've received a ton of positive feedback on the ManMadeMarket website from Etsy shop owners. I had a hunch that this might be something that people would want, so I'm glad to see that inkling validated. I've posted two profiles so far and have several more waiting in the wings. I'd like to post more than just profiles and am brainstorming some ideas. Do you have anything that might work?

Compusii chimici periculosi din produsele cosmetice

Din cele mai vechi timpuri se cunosc numeroase exemple privind preocuparea pentru frumusete si infrumusetare. Uleiurile si parfumurile au fost folosite pentru ritualuri stravechi. Egiptenii si grecii aplicau pe fata minerale pentru a evidentia trasaturile. Romanii foloseau parfumuri pe baza de ulei in baie.

In zilele noastre, ca si in trecut, produsele cosmetice contin compusi chimici cu actiune cancerigena, iritanta, mutagena. Pana in sex XIX, femeile foloseau un fond de ten ce continea carbonat bazic de plumb. Acesta se acumula in organism si provoca numeroase probleme psihice, paralizie si chiar moarte.

In topul celor mai periculosi compusi ce se gasesc in cosmetice se afla parabenii. Acesti compusi sunt esterii acidului para-hidroxibenzoic si mimeaza actiunea hormonilor feminini, fapt ce influenteaza evolutia celulelor canceroase, sensibile la schimbari hormonale.

Parabenii sunt conservanti ce se gasesc in majoritatea produselor cosmetice (sampoane, geluri, pasta de dinti) si in lotiunile pentru bebelusi. Parabenii au efect bactericid si fungicid. Sunt folositi si drept conservanti.

Deodorantele si antiperspirantele au aparut in 1890 avand ca si compus activ clorura de aluminiu ce provoca iritatii. Aceasta a fost inlocuita in 1940 de clorhidratul de aluminiu care mai este folosit si azi. Aluminiul se absoarbe prin piele si prezenta lui in organism in cantitate mare contribuie la aparitia tumorilor mamare precum si a bolii Alzheimer.

Plumbul este continut in rujuri si in vopselele de par. Unele marci de vopsele contin de cateva ori mai mult plumb decat cantitatea admisa. Este un cancerigen binecunoscut care afecteaza sistemul hormonal. Este usor absorbit prin piele si se depoziteaza in oase. Mai poate provoca probleme comportamentale, de memorie si de limbaj, dar poate conduce si la o crestere a agresivitatii. Cei mai vulnerabili sunt copiii si femeile insarcinate.

Plumbul, patrunzand in organism este absorbit de catre eritrocite, tesutul osos si nervos, rinichi. Intoxicarea cronica cu plumb duce la dezvoltarea nefritei. Efecetul biochimic consta in inabusirea activitatii eritrocitelor si cresterea cantitatii de plumb in sange. Intoxicarea cronica cu plumb duce la imbolnavire si la atacarea nervilor motori ai terminatiilor, care se reflecta in dereglarea conductivitatii impulsurilor nervoase.

Lauril sulfatul de sodiu (SLS) este un detergent puternic utilizat datorita capacitatii sale de a produce spuma, la fabricarea sapunului, samponului, spumei de ras, pastei de dinti, a spumei de baie. Produsele cosmetice ce contin lauril sulfat de sodiu pot irita pielea, pot produce urticarie, samponul poate determina caderea parului sau pot apare iritatii ale ochilor. Patrunde foarte usor prin piele si poate ajunge la inima, plamani, ficat sau creier.

Alte substante potential iritante sunt alcoolii benzilic si izopropilic, un solvent si o substanta alteranta, adica o substanta care poate modifica structura altor substante chimice. Sunt folositi la parfumarea produselor cosmetice sau a vopselelor de par, in lotiuni de maini, after-shave-uri si parfumuri. Pot provoca greata, dureri de cap, inrosiri ale pielii si depresii. De asemenea, usuca pielea si provoaca crapaturi ale acesteia care pot inlesni dezvoltarea bacteriilor.

Ftalatii se gasesc in lacurile de unghii, in fixativul pentru par si in unele parfumuri. Sunt conservanti cu efect bactericid si fungicid si sunt ingredienti de baza pentru o mare varietate de produse cosmetice si de igiena. Acestia afecteaza plamanii si pot produce malformatii congenitale daca in timpul sarcinii sunt utilizate cosmeticele cu ftalati. De asemenea, conduce la aparitia infertilitatii alaturi de moscul sintetic continut intr-o serie de parfumuri.

Etanolaminele sunt substante care pot afecta grav sanatatea. Sapunurile, sampoanele, gelurile de dus, spumantele de baie, chiar si produsele pentru copii contin acest amestec de substante care in contact cu nitritii care se gasesc in apa, produc nitrozamine, compusi extrem de toxici cu potential cancerigen.

Cele mai periculoase substante chimice (pe langa cele enumerate pana acum) sunt urmatoarele: acidul salicilic (este toxic daca e folosit in cantitati mari sau la persoane cu sensibilitate la salicilati, carora le face rau chiar si folosit in cantitati mici), ureea (folosita in cantitati mari sau in mod repetat este iritanta pentru piele si ochi), colorantii, conservantii in cantitate mare, acidul boric (continut in pudrele de talc, folosit pentru calitatile sale antiseptice, devine toxic daca este ingerat ori inhalat), camforul (in cantitati mari poate provoca stari de confuzie, iritabilitate, hiperactivitate neuromusculara.

I am sitting at my desk, I have a letter to write, a proposal to draft by Thursday at 2, product follow up and a blog post to write for my job (yes...my job pays me to write posts for the organization blog). Pretty much I can't think and I need to have a clear head to do all of these things, cause I did all the mindless tasks this morning when I was still half asleep.

But in all this I'm also listening to the same song on repeat, "In My Arms" by Plumb...the calming force of a God moment birthed from a song, the chorus going:

Clouds will rage in
Storms will race in
But you will be safe in my arms
Rains will pour down

N-am chef să mă exprim plastic, aşa că cei ce nu au stomac apt pentru a se enerva sau ştiu eu ce alte stări poate provoca postu' ăsta, să facă bine să nu citească în continuare.

Cum e să pierzi pe cineva? Al dracu' de dureros! Dacă se recunoaşte cineva, nu-mi pasă, bine face, să ştie că nu-s indiferentă şi mă doare, dar voi avea grijă să nu mai doară, căci mă voi educa în aşa fel încât să nu-mi mai pese şi de acum înainte să nu mai am prieteni, doar cunoştinţe. Oricum, după câte observ, mai rar se poate vorbi de prietenie în ziua de azi, suntem "prieteni" atâta timp cât ne convine şi putem profita reciproc, dacă nu, ce dracu, aruncăm totul la gunoi, ştergem cu buretele, e cel mai uşor lucru din lume.

De azi am pus punct! M-am săturat, gata! De ce să-mi pese atât de alţii, să mă îngrijorez şi ei să se poarte ca şi cum nu ar fi fost nimic, a trecut şi nu mai deschidem subiectul? Poftim???!!! Adică eu nu ştiu cum să mă dau peste cap să ajut, să fac să fie bine, tu îmi zici jumătăţi de fraze şi după totul e ok???

Sau mai vin unii şi-mi fac tot felul de...hai să nu le zicem reproşuri, că nu s-au exprimat cum că ar fi reproşuri, da le-am simţit eu înăuntrul meu destul de ascuţite ca să doară, but then again, who the fuck cares anyway?
