Caught a podcast - PZ Myers, scourge of the creationist ID fuckwits, responding a day later to Ray C

Caught a podcast - PZ Myers, scourge of the creationist ID fuckwits, responding a day later to Ray Comfort.
I've been lurking about Myer's blog for awhile (he even linked to my Mormon bit - such traffic neither before or since), but had never, you know, heard his voice. I was expecting something more like James Earl Jones.
In any case, this perfectly reasonable guy - sounds about 5'8" and a half - spent the whole time pretty much being a biological Carl Sagan. Myers answered all questions, rebutted his opponents case politely (if deservedly dismissively) and eloquently presented the case for accepting science, evolution and the understanding it provides as not only true but supported by mountains of evidence, in about as cogent and presentable a manner as might be possible.
Peez ain't only smart, he's downright presentable.
Can anatomically correct cephalopod action figures be far behind?

On Monday I was interviewed for a radio podcast to help promote Clairmont's new album and for our show at the Northgate Music Festival coming up on August 22nd. You can experience my sub-par interviewing skills by downloading it here , or you can stream it online right here. It also has a couple of the new songs from our CD on it.

Weren't podcasts going to change our world? Change the way we do business? Is it me, or did podcasts seem to rise to fandom rather quickly, only to fall out of favor just as quickly? I'll admit, I never really jumped on the bandwagon of podcasts as I:

Didn't see the value in it in terms over overtaking other "things" in my day

Just never thought it had potential business impact others did

Maybe I'm wrong... maybe this is the trough of disillusionment. I just see far fewer business partners, media outlets, etc pushing this technology/business advancement.

Anyone else notice the drop-off in this area?

I just checked out the new podcast of my short-story Grounders on Variant Frequencies and I think it's pretty cool. You can judge for yourself if the story is any good, but the people at Variant Frequencies did a heck of a job producing it, and Thomas "cmdln" Gideon did a great job reading it.

I first started talking about podcasting the story with Seth Harwood a couple of months ago. Seth writes and podcasts the Jack Palms crime series, including the recently published and (deservedly) much buzzed-about first in the series, Jack Wakes Up. Seth does the reading himself on his podcasts. He does a hell of a job and he makes it sound easy. When we first discussed podcasting Grounders, Seth told me to practice reading it.

Now, I have always thought I did a pretty good job of reading my work (and I undeniably kill reading Dr. Seuss), but as I sat at my dinner table, reading my story aloud to myself, it sounded lame and flat and terrible. Luckily, Seth forwarded the story to Rick Stringer at Variant Frequencies, and Rick agreed to produce it for podcast, which meant someone else would be reading it. Thank god.

Rick tapped Thomas to read it, a great fit not only because of his talent as a reader, but also because of his extensive background in computing and his excellent blog, Command Line, both of which are relevant to the story itself. Hearing his reading brought home how much difference a great reader can make.

I was thinking about this the other night at the Tritone Bar in Philly, at the first night of Noir at the Bar, a new monthly event put together by Peter Rovosky. Duane Swierczynski, author of the crazed and amazing Severance Package among other excellent works, was the featured guest (I'll be doing the second Noir at the Bar, on July 6). Duane is an excellent public speaker, but adamant about not reading in public (he very well might need corrective lenses, but we don't know because he won't even read an eye chart out loud). The program that night had two parts: an interview by Duane's friend (and mine) book critic Ed Pettit (a.k.a. The Philly Poe Guy); and a reading of the first chapter of Severance Package by Ed's wife, Kate, who is an actor. I've been to plenty of author readings, and I've enjoyed them immensely, but there is a big difference listening to a trained actor up there, inflecting, intoning, doing all those actor-ly things, and really doing justice to what was on the page. Duane's book is great, but Kate's reading made it even better.

This is probably no revelation to all you playwrights out there and authors with books on disk, but listening to someone else reading your work aloud is an amazing experience, like hearing a singer sing a song you've written (an experience from my misspent youth). You learn things about the language and

I'm thinking of asking Kate or Thomas to come with me next time I get my eyes checked. I can hear it now, a voice rich with emotion and meaning, reading:

I am jotting down a few ideas as to what will be the rough story or outline with Aliens vs. Jedi.

Over the weekend, I did some research on finding the history of the Sith. Darth Bane was the one that decided to have “One Master and One Apprentice” to preserve the Sith Order. Over the years before, during and after Star Wars, the Sith were always lurking in the shadows and looking for ways to dominate and rule the Galaxy. Preventing this from happening were the Jedis.

The Sith were once Jedis and all took part of a civil war called the Great Schism. Each had there one code to follow.

Once the Dark Jedis were defeated, they were left alone to settle on a planet called Korriban. On this planet, the Sith were interbred with these Jedis and the Sith Empire grew. As I read on, the Sith through their history have always wanted to overthrow the Jedi Order. There is a constant ying yang effect for both orders…until now.

Set in the far, far future from the events of Return of the Jedi, a Sith Apprentice sets to overthrow his Master. This is to be expected of the Apprentice but s(he) wants more. The Apprentice was starting to cause an uprising. In order to quell this, the Apprentice was sent out on a mission where the Apprentice was not expected to come back from. During this exercise, the Apprentice finds the Alien creature. He was able to not only survive the encounter but found a way to overthrow the Jedi and now the Sith.

The beginning of the story happens with a lone Jedi waking up on a planet. The Jedi is disoriented as s(he) wakes up and finds themselves in cocoon. The Jedi sees the lightsaber on the ground and calls upon it using the Force. The saber is lit up and frees the Jedi. Still weak, the Jedi looks to see an ellipsoidal leathery object about one meter high with a four-lobed opening at the top. The Jedi looks in to see nothing in it and there is nothing around. The Jedi makes its ways out and finds his/her ship and heads back to Coruscant the home of the Jedi Temple.

As the Jedi reports to the Jedi Council the encounter it had with the Sith Apprentice. The fight between them did not last long. No idea as why or what was the goal. The Jedi complains of sore throat, slight nausea, and suddenly starts to convulse. We have seen this before but the Jedis have not. We get our first glimpse of a new Alien/Jedi hybrid. The rest of the story gets to play our like Alien and Aliens combined.

If the story continues, we will jump back to tell the backstory of the Sith Apprentice, the encounter of the Alien encounter, and the Sith being attacked.

The last past of the book will include the continuation of the losing Jedi battle with the Aliens. The climax will have whatever remaining Sith to join the remaining Jedi and fight together to overcome the Alien threat.

Cate and Tobie get stuck into Firefly, starting, appropriately enough, with the first episode Serenity. Listen as we discuss the two part pilot, our feelings on it, and how quickly we make a claim on Mal's love.

We go a little long. Blame Cate, since it's her fault.
