On Saturday afternoon over 30 people joined with No Borders South Wales outside Newport Passport O

On Saturday afternoon over 30 people joined with No Borders South Wales outside Newport Passport Office to protest against the introduction of ID cards for non-EU foreign nationals resident in the UK from this November.

Thousands of copies of our new leaflet "Big Brother is coming", produced especially for the event, were distributed to members of the public. The leaflet lays out the government timetable for rolling out the scheme and makes the point that these new ID cards are not only a repressive measure against migrants, they are the first shot in an attack against everyone's freedom. The vast majority of passers by who took the time out to speak with people on the demonstration were very supportive of our campaign and were were adamant that they would not accept an ID card themselves.

A dozen police were waiting by the Passport office at 2pm when people arrived. The senior officer informed people that they were willing to 'facilitate' the protest providing only two people were stood outside the entrance to the passport office and everyone else stood on the other side of the road. The police were politely but firmly told that that was both unreasonable and unacceptable. The officer then said he would go inside the office and then return to implement "another course of action". Unsurprisingly, this other course of action was to completely abandon his original demand and only ask us not to block the entrance, which we had already told him we had no intention of doing.

Though in this case the police soon realised we were not going to be bullied around and the protest was able to pass off without too much of their interference, it is a concern that less experienced people wishing to exercise their legal right to protest are intimidated into being sidelined into designated "protest zones". Across the UK police forces regularly demand that protest organisers contact them beforehand, despite the fact we all have the right to gather and protest without asking for permission. Under the guise of "minimising disruption" and even protecting the protest from disgruntled members of the public(?!?), it is increasingly common for police to view an effectively policed protest as one which as few people as possible are aware is happening. A good example of this was the march against the military academy in Cardiff which the police forced out of sight down back-streets, earlier this year.

Four officers from Gwent Police's 'Evidence Gathering Team' filmed participants at the demonstration constantly, both from a distance and at close range. They alsofrequently checked the inside of their hats where we believe they kept their 'spotter cards' which identify known activists. These four officers then followed a number of the demonstrators to a local pub where they stood outside patiently in the rain, waiting for them to come out and then followed them again, over the River Usk to the legendary TJs where Smash EDO were showing a film to build support for their upcoming protest before day two of No Border Fest. Their actions are clearly politically motivated. As one passer by noted:

"I didn't know there were so many police in Newport"

The reaction of the NO2ID campaign to the introduction of these ID cards has been underwhelming to say the least. And has largely been limited to the press release quoted in a previous post and this extract from a longer comment on their website:

"Resistance to the database state is growing, but that has not discouraged Whitehall. It seems more determined than ever to sneak round obstacles using misdirection and to find new, softer, targets...

Latest of those soft targets are overseas students, and people seeking to settle in the UK with British husbands and wives. Those, people with strong reasons not to make a fuss, are the ones to be targeted for the new biometric card scheme that will act as a test bed for the ID scheme. Jacqui Smith's launch of "ID cards for foreigners" was a shameless piece of spin to try to associate the unpopular ID scheme with the popular policy of restricting immigration.

There's no real link. And it is unclear how much technology there is yet. But immigration law already gives the Home Office some of the powers it would like to exert over everyone, and so it has a free hand to try out, on a few selected foreign residents, the processes it eventually intends to use for everyone else."

The discussion about this protest on the NO2ID forum certainly seems to reveal real naivety amongst at least some sections of NO2ID supporters, with one poster commenting that

"They aren't ID cards for foreigners. They are biometric residence and work permits."

It comes to something when a supposed opponent of the database state is inventing meaningless spin for the government as they are about to introduce the first ID cards! It is a shame that this new move by the home office is not recognised by more anti-ID activists for being what the government is very open about. This unwillingness to defend the rights of migrants endangers the struggle for everyone's liberty. Previously Defy ID has been a vehicle for opposition to ID cards from a libertarian perspective, but given the manner in which the government is using a a greater repression of migrants as a testing ground for this scheme No Borders must intervene.

PM disappointed with Hindraf supporters

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has expressed his disappointment with the Hindraf supporters who had come to the Hari Raya open house he and the ministers hosted on Wednesday.

Abdullah said the police and security personnel, who had initially denied the Hindraf group access, sought clearance from him.

“I discussed it with (his deputy) Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the other ministers. My view was that they wanted to come to the open house, which is open to all and we do not stop any group from coming to wish us and join other guests. “We even welcomed non-Malaysians who came in huge numbers. In that spirit I told the security people to ask them to come in. But they came in and there was a lot of noise, I don’t know why,” Abdullah said on Monday.

More than 100 Hindraf supporters turned up at the open house last Wednesday. Another group was also there in support of ISA detainee Raja Petra Kamarudin.

Abdullah said those around him pointed out that none of the Hindraf supporters had wished him Selamat Hari Raya.

“The rest I heard very clearly – ‘Hapuskan ISA, Lepaskan Hindraf; Hapuskan ISA, Lepaskan Hindraf’ (Repeal the ISA, Release the Hindraf detainees). That was all they wanted to say to me. They did not have the spirit of Hari Raya, to enjoy and join in the celebration,” he added.

Abdullah said Hari Raya was a national celebration and leaders, the Sultans and heads of state received the people at open houses without any problems.

“But this one has created a lot of unhappiness to many people,” he said, adding he was told that when he went for prayers in between, another group of about 70 people were there.

“I was not present, if they were some among the 70 who wished Selamat Hari Raya, I wouldn’t know. But when I was there and this happened, nobody was interested to wish Selamat Hari Raya.

“Some of them even skipped my ministers. Even Datuk Seri Najib, some of them skipped also,” he said.

To a question he said no action was being planned against the group.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, Raya spirit is one, but think about those who have been locked up without trial in the cells, eating the ? dog-food and enduring the heat and cold through out years.

Ask for forgiveness? I think he better ask forgiveness from those locked up under ISA, instead of from the almigthy.......! He is trying to play GOD for he thinks what he has done is right, but never he reliazes that he sucks..........not welcome at all in the land that belongs to all the Malaysians.....and who is this NAJIS that need recognition?

I wonder if only beast has the heart to celebrate RAYA while seeing others in hell.

Huuhhhh......open house, siapa punya duit?

The greatest disappointment in life will be, if UMNO still the ruling party for all the Malaysians after the next GE.

Uncool, so was.

In ihrer Clique sei alles viel besser gewesen.

Auch Ahmed will weg. Also fort.

As it becomes clearer that the economy is struggling both nationally and globally I believe it would be only a matter of time before crime increases. The BBC reports an increase in crime in our Southern Neighbor Mexico this may allow us to draw the inference the tidal surge will effect our nation. see ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7597138.stm )

While I don't necessarily see white shoe Investment Bankers morphing from white collar robbers to bank robbers , but given their dubious dealings it does not seem like a metaphysical task. However CNN today reports that Homelessness is up shapely in Massachusetts. See ( http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/10/06/economy.homeless.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories)

In an article from Amatuer Economists quoting most of the Heritage foundations findings ( http://www.heritage.org/Press/Commentary/ed111500a.cfm )" Is their a correlation between crime and the economy "http://www.amateureconomists.com/blogs/2008/09/10/is-there-a-correlation-between-crime-and-the-economy/ ) overall the author states the answer is no. Nevertheless, it appears that the nation as a whole and urban environments with the later experiencing an increase in crime. may behave differently.

However, can we compare the mindset of the great depression and the character of Americans than to our present day mindset, which is in my opinion more selfish, more reliant on government assistance than on self reliance. Ron Howard's film

Cinderella Man ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_Man ), portrayed the shame a family felt being on public assistance. Today, no such " make it on my own" mentality exists. I'm not suggesting that an unemployed person out of work because of circumstances beyond his control should feel shame, but the ethos of picking ones self up by the boots is a diminishing character trait.

The author does note that in the 80's crack epidemic many young men in the urban communities made an economic decision to sell drugs as real wages fell. As a young cop in 1986 I can personally attest to the extreme gun riddled violence associated with drug dealers protecting their territory, bad stuff. NPR suggest the video " Crackheads Gone Wild has an important message. ( http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5650844 )

What factors today have changed that may suggest an increase in crime. For one in New York Wall Street provides three jobs for every one on the traditional trading floor. see ( http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzdata1001,0,1623188.story ) Wall Street provides up to 20% of the entire State of New York's tax revenues, and 11% of New York City's. see ( http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=asz_KzGSCc6o&refer=us ) As such then will New York be able to maintain its financial assistance to non profit, social, and affordable housing groups. And assuming that this assistance is enabling many just to " get by" , what will happen when the money dries up, which is inevitable.

If the present Mexican crime increase is an indicator, the financial crisis may also cause crime to increase. Today the variables of ( permanent wall street job losses and ancillary job loss which are frequently lower and often border line " non living wages" increase immigrant workers, decrease in public funds for social programs, inflation, recession- depression indicators, strongly suggest crime will rise. As the City of New York has already announced budget cut back's police agency's will struggle to maintain decreases in crime. Wall Street has caused more than financial victims they have put in motion a cascade of events and one of those will be an increase in crime.

f’AC or firstasia’s Assessment Center is a selection and developmental method conducted by firstasia Consultants that carried out comprehensively and aimed to determine “the right man on the right place”

The basic concept of f’AC is similar with the assessment center in general, which is a multiple input process, where a number of assessor will observe the behavior of participants in a test situation or simulated activities.

The uniquely concept that separates f’AC from other assessment centers is its assessment center design, that based on a competence dictionary which has been develop by firstasia consultants’ team. The dictionary itself was derivates from The Big Five Personality at Work™

They were attacked by state and federal police, according to an ejido representative. Ten wounded and thirty detained reported.

by Elio Henriquez, correspondent for La Jornada
translation and update by Kristin Bricker

Miguel Hidalgo Ejido, Chiapas. State and federal police shot and murdered six peasants from this ejido [communally owned land] in La Trinitaria county, which for almost a month has controlled the Chinkultic archaeological ruins, located three kilometers from the ejido.

Jose Velazquez, one of the ejido representatives, stated to the press that the incidents that occurred in the ejido late Friday night resulted in over ten wounded and more than thirty people detained who are recovering in a hospital in the city of Comitan.

Blood trails, scatted spent high-caliber casings, and bullet holes could be seen in the streets and in some houses.

"It seemed like the police were on drugs because they indiscriminately beat children, women, and elderly people, and that's not right," said Velazquez.

When the first four cadavers arrived Saturday morning, the families of the dead demanded justice "or we'll take it into our own hands."

The names of the dead peasants are reported to be Ricardo Ramírez Hernández, Ignacio Hernández López, Rigoberto López Vázquez, Alfredo Hernández Ramírez, Miguel Antonio Martínez, and Agustín Alfaro Calvo.

Velazquez said that when faced with the "aggression," the residents detained and disarmed 77 police who had entered the community presumably to detain the local authorities. Six thousand people live in the community.

The community still has the police weapons in its possession.

"They came to attack us without cause, because they were already in discussions to try to resolve the ruins problem" which are located nine kilometers from the Lakes of Montebello, he said.

He noted that the residents of Miguel Hidalgo took over the ruins because the government "has left them abandoned and because it's only right that the resources that come from the operation of the ruins stay with us."

On Saturday there were at least eight police vehicles which were damaged by the peasants who, enraged by the death of their compañeros, went after the agents who fired their weapons, and the agents were later rescued by other officers Friday night.

Police officers in Cambridge are to be equipped with whistles once more to tackle the ever increasing problem of anti-social cyclists.

It is hoped that the comeback of the police whistle will both deter cyclists from being anti-social (perhaps by encouraging them to join a book group), as well as fit in with this season's retro fashion trend. After all, police officers have been wearing the same uniform for years; it's time to update the look.

It is thought that the idea first came about when members of the Cambridge police force tried remembering when they last had local cyclists under control. Apparently it was when they had whistles.

It is not quite clear why whistles are so effective against young cyclists, yet seemingly uneffective against young people on foot wearing hoodies. It is thought that the high-pitched screech of the whistle distracts the cyclist, causing him to wobble and then fall off. It is hoped that footage of local wobbling cyclists will soon appear on YouTube for the enjoyment of all.

The other day I bought a bag of "Plackers" Dental-Flossers. We've all seen them and even used them at one point. Now, I am not denigrating the usefulness of this product, it is great. I can't use regular floss, and I always take way too much string when I try to. This is more ergo-dynamic and economical for me. Listen...I don't mean to use my blog as a product placer.

However, when I was reading the packet I saw the following, "Engineered not to shred or break during use. The Same Fiber Used To Make Bulletproof Vests." Now, I'm all for the string not breaking or shredding when I'm using it...but do we really need the same fiber that is used to make bulletproof vests? Do the other bullet-prone fibers not work? I've used the non-bulletproof flossers before and they have never broke on me; they worked just fine. Can I make my own bulletproof vest out of this material? Is there such a surplus of bulletproof fiber that we needed to find another use for it?

Honestly, I'm a little concerned. Is the material used for bulletproof vests so cheap and inexpensive that we can buy a whole bunch of bullet-proof strings for under three dollars. At this rate, how much would it cost to make my own bulletproof vest? Twenty bucks? How safe are our bulletproof vests if the material is so cheap? I think our local police departments should know that their equipment is being made from the same materials as dental flossers. Or are the cops using their vests to help keep their gums clean? Is this the government's way of saving money...by taking dental plans away from police officers and giving them dual-purpose dental hygienic vests?

I can see the advertisements now: "Plackers Micro-Mint Dental Floss...Save Your Gums and Lives!" Or "Helps Fight Cavity and Crime at the Same Time (for the hip-hop jingle). Maybe that's the target market: Rappers with the gold teeth who are trying to protect their mouths while flossing (Hat-tip to Jack for the suggestion). Since 50 Cent has been shot in the mouth numerous times, the marketers figured rappers can use a floss that will help protect them from bullets. I'm just saying...

[caption id="attachment_183" align="alignright" width="235" caption="courtesy of first responder magazine"][/caption]

my husband is a first responder. so is my son. many people's husbands, wives, sons, daughters, and family are first responders. this may mean they are a police officer, a firefighter, an ems technician, an ambulance driver, in the military, or even one of many, many support services that keep all these [and many others] operating. whoever the first responder is, they put a lot on the line and there's generally no argument about that. they have made commitments to put the safety and welfare of others ahead of themselves. they are, no doubt, the everyday hero's of our world.

yet.... i never realized what exactly the families of some of these first responders go through.

i understand everyday what it is like to kiss a husband in law enforcement goodbye never knowing what the day will bring. however, this past fall, i understood what it was like to watch your military son leave to serve his country in iraq. and this past month, when hurricane ike hit houston, i understood the burden of responsibilities that fall upon the families of these first responders when they are away on extended shifts taking care of everyone else's families.

for almost 3 weeks as my husband worked 12 hour plus shifts, often bunking at his station because there was no time to make the 45 minute turned 3 hour commute home and return back again on time [due to debris, flooding, and road closures]. i was left with a damaged house to clean up, kids to take care of, and a numerous host of things that in ordinary circumstances, would be difficult enough with him at home. we had no power and we were told the drinking water was not safe. we had to try to find food as we had been advised to stock up for only 72 hours. well, 72 hours turned into weeks. i have a daughter with diabetes who must have her insulin and whose insulin must be kept cold. i have rheumatoid arthritis but had to pick up, in some cases, whole trees, and move them to a safer place as designated by our community association. my children and i raked the yard for 3 days only to redo it all over again each morning thereafter as nightly winds scattered more debis across the neighborhood. we ate cold canned food, went to bed at sundown and got up at sunrise.

please don't take this the wrong way, i am not complaining! i am thankful that we were not injured, the damage to our home and neighbors was not worse, and we all came out of it ok [which many, unbeknown as a result of the almost absent media coverage, did not] . complaining isn't what this blog is about. i am simply relaying one story, my story, as an example of what millions of first responders families go though.

to break it down a little, let's take just one institution of first response: hpd. the houston police department employees over 5,000 officers. that is 5,000 families who were without a family member during this [and many other] crises. multiply this by all the differing professions that first responders occupy, taking into account all of the crisis interventionists, per se, in all the world and you have a whole bunch of families that end up in need themselves. families that for the most part, never complain, never ask for special assistance, and in fact, forgo much help in order to allow their first responder to do his or her duty. and, might i add, this, in addition, to the fear such families often face regarding the fate of their responder during the crisis itself, is an issue that needs some attention.

i heard a really sad story during hurricane ike [and there were and continue to be many], but this one was about a first responder, a police officer and his family nonetheless. no, he wasn't injured physically but you could say he was injured financially, socially, and i'm sure, motivationally. this police officer, who shall go unnamed, called his station to report that a huge tree had fallen though the roof of his house and that he needed to attend to it to ensure the safety of his family. his supervisor's response was that he must "come in" or suffer the consequences. well... he chose to make sure that his family and kids were safe, their belongings protected from the elements, and that they had somewhere to sleep. as a result, he was suspended.suspended, i am sure, without pay and his record blemished for the rest of his career.

what is wrong here?

somewhere, somehow, we need to learn to take care of each other and in doing so, not forget the caretakers themselves.

*i am not really sure why i felt compelled to write this blog other than to bring a bit of attention to an area that in my opinion, has been overlooked, and perhaps to voice in proxy so many of the situations and needs that go unnoticed and unmet.

Perez made her Mexican wrestling debut in June 2006 as a masked competitor named Xtasis. She spent three weeks competing for Lucha Libre Feminil as well as appearing for AAA.

Portia returned to Europe in November 2006, touring once again with Ireland's Irish Whip Wrestling. During her trip, Perez took part in the Queens of Chaos 2 tournament in Paris, France, and also debuted for Real Quality Wrestling in London's York Hall, challenging RQW Women's Champion "Jezebel" Eden Black.

Portia returned to Europe for a third time in April 2007. She wrestled shows in England and Ireland over the course of four weeks.

Perez missed all of her June and July 2007 dates after suffering a broken hand in a match against MsChif at SHIMMER Women Athletes' June 2 show. She returned to action at Ring of Honor's July 27 show in Long Island.

Perez was part of an illfated tour of India being run by Tiger Jeet Singh in October 2007. All the shows of the tour were canceled and many of the wrestlers were detained by authorities after a riot at a press conference.

Portia formed a tag team with Nicole Matthews debuting at SHIMMER Women Athletes' October 2007 show. They are now known as the Canadian NINJAs, and have also teamed in Vancouver's ECCW.

Portia began a feud with Allison Danger at SHIMMER's July 5, 2008 show, targeting Danger's legitimately injured shoulder.

According to the annual evaluation report of the Downtown Monitored Surveillance Camera Program, a decision has been made to install a camera "near the intersection of Richmond and Kent Streets." The area is identified by LPS as "one of highest for calls for service in the downtown area."

The 16 current cameras cost $136,000 to operate in 2007. They are monitored "from approximately 9pm to 5am daily and as staff are available during the off times."

According to a London Police Services analysis, "crime rate in the area covered by the cameras was 14% lower in 2007 compared to 2006" whereas "the area neighbouring the camera coverage showed a 2% increase in incidents from 2006."

Matron's a fanatical murderer. Last week, for example, just to keep up with her insatiable bloodlust, she managed to work her way through an entire agency's worth of secretary temps. I needed some creative thinking to persuade the agency to send some more after the 37th failed to hand in her timesheet. I don't think my story of there being a giant secretary magnet hovering over the country plucking secretarys from the streets (and that they were at their safest at the institution where we have a strict no giant magnet flight zone in force), was totally convincing. The promise to Boris of a night with Brad Pitt was a useful bribe that kept the rouse going longer than ordinarrily possible, though.

Still...with murder comes body disposal.

Luckily for Matron I'm adept with shovels, acid, hungry pigs, DNA alteration and hacking into Police networks to modify their so called "evidence". It took me a while to get good at this stuff, so some of my early attempts, circa November 1938, were somewhat shambolic. Take this for example. I left a huge clue to all the authorities that I'd buried the fruits of Matron's foolish behaviour. At least, that's what I think I buried there. It's been a while.

So I decided to take a peek. There's no harm in peeking right?

At first it was all pretty normal. I excavated through the usual bones, teeth, spoons and amulets of ancient and ungodly power. Then I found something really intriguing. It had an eery mysterious glow and it smelt of wasps. The light danced across its surface and it was dispensing weak lemon drink into a small cup that never seemed to overflow or run dry. Then it began singing a melody of such enchanting beauty that I was powerless but to lick it furiously.

A few hours later I was aware that my tongue had swollen to the size of my left foot - which was just as well as my left foot appeared to have gone. As had my right elbow, though strangely my right hand was right where it should be.

It was ace.

But when I lost awareness of my eyebrows I knew I was sinking into trouble. But I couldn't stop licking. The melody was washing over me in waves of surrealness that compelled me to lick. I could feel my life ebbing away from me.

A pain.

A stinging pain at the back of my head.

Then nothing.

Nothing at all.

I awoke in my cell. Matron was there. And so was all of my body. In fact, my body had been augmented by a large shovel shaped bump on the back of my head. Matron explained. I should never had tried to regain my foolishness by unearthing what I had stowed years before. Matron, it would seem, had taken appropriate action to free me from my folly and save my life.

But damn.

I had found an eternal source of weak lemon drink and it was cruelly taken from me.

I guess my quest continues...

Brake lines cut, cars damaged at homes. Toronto police patrolled a midtown area overnight, after van

Brake lines cut, cars damaged at homes. Toronto police patrolled a midtown area overnight, after vandals cut brake lines on at least 10 cars parked at homes with Liberal election signs on their lawns.

"We're investigating. Officers are paying special attention to the designated area and we take this very seriously," Staff-Sgt. Shawn Meloche, from 53 Division, said last night. "This is a danger to life as well as to property. Regardless of the motivation – and there appears to be a connection (to the signs) – this is a public safety issue."

Affected residents live in the riding of St. Paul's, in a swath of the city around Eglinton Ave. between Bathurst St. and Mount Pleasant Rd., and had Carolyn Bennett signs on their property. Although Meloche confirmed 10 cases of vandalism last night, Liberal riding headquarters said the number was going up, reporting 14 by 9 p.m.

The cars were also damaged in other ways; some were scratched and keyed with L signs. Phone and cable lines of some homes were cut.

"There are two child seats in the back of my car," said Andrew Lane, chief financial officer for Bennett's campaign. "To cut the brake line on a car like that is just evil. Awful."

Added Lane, whose children are 6 months and 22 months: "You have to crawl under someone's car and cut the brake line, knowing that it could kill someone, or their whole family."

Lane discovered his brakes didn't work on his silver Saturn View as he tried to pull up at a stop sign near his home yesterday. He kept slamming the brakes and, in a "moment of terror," narrowly avoided slamming into a bus.

Later, the garage called to tell him it had been no accident. When Lane expressed disbelief, the mechanic told him: "Look, this is a big, heavy rubber hose and it's been cut through with a very sharp knife. You should phone the police."

Police later said Lane was not alone and asked if he had an election sign, telling him, "The Carolyn Bennett sign seems to be the one thing linking events."

"I'm just sick to my stomach about this," a shaken Bennett told the Toronto Star last night. She spent the day visiting the vandals' victims. "It is so upsetting. I've spent my life encouraging people to get involved in the democratic process and now it would appear they are targeted for doing so."

Brent Johnston, former chief fundraiser for the provincial Liberals, was backing his Volkswagen Golf slowly out of his driveway when alarms went off. He then discovered brake fluid in his driveway. When he called Volkswagen, they told him he wasn't the first to call, and to check his car for damage.

He, too, has two young children and shudders to think what might have happened if he had driven the car with a cut brake line.

"This isn't about party politics. Putting people's lives at risk is a whole different thing," said Johnston. "We're not taking the sign down. We won't be intimidated. But I am really disappointed this is happening in Canada. It's beyond comprehension."
