One week after the no-bid service deals were announced, the world caught its first glimpse of the real prize. After years of back-room arm-twisting, Iraq is officially flinging open six of its major oil fields, accounting for around half of its known reserves, to foreign investors. According to Iraq's oil minister, the long-term contracts will be signed within a year. While ostensibly under control of the Iraq National Oil Company, foreign firms will keep 75 percent of the value of the contracts, leaving just 25 percent for their Iraqi partners.

Once oil passed $140 a barrel, even the most rabidly right-wing media hosts had to prove their populist cred by devoting a portion of every show to bashing Big Oil. Some have gone so far as to invite me on for a friendly chat about an insidious new phenomenon: "disaster capitalism." It usually goes well--until it doesn't.

For instance, "independent conservative" radio host Jerry Doyle and I were having a perfectly amiable conversation about sleazy insurance companies and inept politicians when this happened: "I think I have a quick way to bring the prices down," Doyle announced. "We've invested $650 billion to liberate a nation of 25 million people. Shouldn't we just demand that they give us oil? There should be tankers after tankers backed up like a traffic jam getting into the Lincoln Tunnel, the Stinkin' Lincoln, at rush hour with thank-you notes from the Iraqi government.... Why don't we just take the oil? We've invested it liberating a country. I can have the problem solved of gas prices coming down in ten days, not ten years."

There were a couple of problems with Doyle's plan, of course. The first was that he was describing the biggest stickup in world history. The second, that he was too late: "We" are already heisting Iraq's oil, or at least are on the cusp of doing so.

These crews of bandits are really beginning to hurt small boutique businesses in Atlanta. For the past year, many women’s and men’s boutique in the Atlanta metro area have been burglarized by these bandits, who have stolen designer jeans retailing at $200 and selling them on the black market for as low as $70. Talk about a deeply discounted product.

With most boutiques being hit more than once, these thefts are severely affecting the businesses and some boutique owners say if they are hit again by these perpetrators they will have to close their business. Some of the most popular brands targeted are True Religion, Rock N Republic, Citizens of Humanity, Red Monkey and Evisu. In one hit these thieves are getting away with on average about $100,000 in merchandise. Some business owners have had to pay to hire security guards and not mention their insurance premiums have nearly tripled.

Since I’m a solution minded person, I came up with a possible solution. Here goes, let me know what you think….

Discontinue the sale of designer jeans in these boutiques and let your customers know that they are Web Exclusive items that can be ordered via your stores website and only keep samples of each size per brand in the store so that your customer will know what size to order via the web. This will also help drive additional business to the stores site and help boost sales in a tech savvy way.

I know it’s a great feeling as a customer to actual go into the store and walk away with the merchandise. However, I’m one of those customers that loves to shop online and would rather make my purchase this way.

Dear Family, Friends and other remarkable folks inhabiting Mother Earth,
As I mentioned in a communi

Dear Family, Friends and other remarkable folks inhabiting Mother Earth,

As I mentioned in a communiqué to my super cousin, Rose Nash, life is settling down into a more basic routine that is still kept exciting by the increase of certain behaviors, usually later at night. These activities are holdups, which seem to be focused on the six to eight square blocks where I reside and call home. It is in the heart of NGO land and it has to be admitted in the echoes of the late, great Willie Sutton when asked why he robbed banks, -- it is where the money is. Theft and holdups are nothing really new in Phnom Penh but the use of a gun is rather unique. Most of the time robberies are basically committed by the young kids who come flying by on their gaudy colored motos, and grab handbags and tear away laughing. I just don’t understand this need to have a brightly colored motorcycle with two and sometimes three guys sitting on it. I always thought the idea of a good stickup artist was invisibility and stealth. Maybe they are cops and are just tired of the drab government uniform they have to wear when they commit their felonious assaults on the citizenry, locals and foreigners.

So, anyway, the news of importance about this new rash of robberies is that sometimes the robbers are waving guns at the victims. This is very unusual but in Phnom Penh there are many explanations. The big one, but not the best one to me, is that with the elections ready for late July, the young’ens are just getting their piece of the pie early. Many people seem to believe that instead of being poor kids or poor provincial folks who have come to the big city in search of quick wealth, it is actually the sons of the big gun politicians who feel or are supported in the view that they are above the law. There might something to this thought because they do own the big streets after 10 or 11 at night as they race around town on their big motorcycles or high priced cars.

Another view, which I seem to lean toward is that with the inflationary spiral is going up like a thermometer on a hot day, ends just are not meeting like they used to. The gun issue is often shrugged off by the older citizens as nothing new. Back in the late 80’s and 90’s everybody owned guns, some owned lots of guns, and some owned truly formidable firepower like machine guns or AK 47s. With peace or civilization or big time donor groups coming into the scene the guns were evidently buried or exchanged for new and enhanced toys. Now they are coming out again.

I find that I tend to tuck my tail down a little earlier than I used to and am watching more bootlegged DVDs and listening to more pirated CDs than before. Maybe it just depends on your choice or illegality as what to what turns you on.

Work is still fun and currently we are waiting for some of this huge largess that the World bank tells us is going into the pipeline any day. I do hear that some of it – maybe a massive amount of it, is already in the pipeline but is going to contractors to build new schools. Some more is going to the Teacher Training Department, which is our big rival for handouts and largess. I am scheduled to do a training session for them in the next month or so, because my Filipina friend has been tasked with the job of developing a training module on special education. They really don’t have one now but they are expected to come up with one. I don’t feel any conflict with this request I am going to bring along my friends from the Special Education Office to support my song and dance show. I think it will work. In some future newsletter I will elaborate on the tensions of having one high powered ministry official’s wife working for one department while our lowly department happened to marry for love, or poverty or whatever.

On the issue of work topics, we are engaged in a consortium run by World Bank in which we plan to do some nation wide mapping for children with disabilities. The goal will be to identify essentially how many children in the nation have disabilities. The unique feature of this survey will be to determine how many children exist both in and out of school. This latter factor is key to future programming since by 2015 under the Education for All agreement many nations signed, we are supposed to be serving all children wit a basic education of nine years. The initial comment, which could easily be the motto for everything World Bank does, was “No data, no problem.” While most of the volunteers all know intuitively about the world-class issues facing education in Cambodia and we can all cite many personal observations of examples that defy reasonable interpretation of a sincere system, nobody can really produce a set of data that everybody agrees on.

World Bank has been complaining about this for quite a while and for a finance governing institution this must have driven them crazy. Anyway now we will possibly move on this.

The structural model is pretty good but as often the case, there is many a slip between the cup and the lip. A pilot project will be done in Phnom Penh in which 1000 children will be surveyed. These caregivers of these children will be asked several questions on a variety of issues such as income, and other demographic topics. Then there will be a ten (or maybe an 11 question including one on behavior) form in which if the caregiver answers any question “Yes” the child will move on to Phase two which includes a complete medical and psychological. In this phase it will be determined whether the child has a true disability or not. It is expected that of the original 1000 children surveyed, about 250 will be eligible for Phase two.

Now, in order to determine statistics that includes “out-of-school” children another 4000 children’s caregivers will be surveyed. In addition to the expected 20 to 25% of eligibles for phrase two, every tenth child will be automatically selected for phase two.

Are you still with me? These procedures are all statistically sound and will produce, if everything goes right, a big “if” but presumably doable, a set of baseline data. A large team of community based workers will be needed and a site coordinator and most important, teams of doctors and psychologists. Now remember this is country that 1. Killed all of its medical personnel if it found any, and 2. A doctor can buy his or her way through school without ever studying. So, where do this professional group come from?

The model has been used in Bangladesh and in Ethiopia. Ethiopia posed many problems similar to Cambodia and help was culled for a source that America doesn’t recognize. Cuba! It seems that in Cuba there are so many fairly well trained doctors that they are driving cabs, working as waiters in hotels etc. The health care system is extraordinary if you can accept Michael Moore’s documentary on health care. Che Guevara is rumored to have “loaned” thousand of doctors to South American Countries who were in desperate need. Regardless, that is one source.

As training occurs then these teams can move on to the remainder of the 24 provinces in Cambodia. I like the notion but already folks are shuddering when then think of the logistics involved. It will take from two to three months for a province to be surveyed and it is expected that by December 2009 it will be complete. Granted there will be quite a bit of simultaneous surveying going on but again, it is doable and the results will be the baseline that future efforts can be built on.

Tomorrow finishes up this workshop I have been in and Monday it will back to work in SEO. I think I will begin writing some plans for implementation for the policy we recently had sent to the ministry and had signed. That will keep me busy for a while.

In the meanwhile, take a look around you and think about the social programs you have at your beck and call. The school systems, the clinics, the government supported counseling and drug rehabilitation programs. Plus the hundreds and possibly thousands of other programs that we rarely ever hear about. All of this without donor groups unless you call the American taxpayer a donor group. I do and I think most of us do. Even in comparison with other developed nations we have a very good system. It can and should be better but it is not bad while we support a defense system that is most expensive in history. No more lectures for now.

Love you all and hope that all is well with you and yours. Your clinical observer, Dick

From the Charleston Gazette today:

This is another one of those "only in West Virginia" items...

A St. Albans woman, who has since qualified for the Parent of the Year award and the Intellectual Criminal of the Year award, robbed a video slot parlor with a Crossman BB pistol. She held it to the clerk's head and stole her cell phone and keys. It didn't say whether or not she took the clerk's car with the keys, I'm assuming she did not - since she only had to escape a few houses down.

She was found sitting on a porch a few houses away a short time later by police. She had the cash, the keys and the cell phone - and the kids I'm assuming - with her on the front porch.

She later told police that she just wanted a better life for her kids. Well, this is probably the best thing that could happen to her kids because now they will be raised by someone else - anyone else.

What an idiot.

Sandra Smith was married with kids when she started an affair with the roguish Yassiem Harris, a move that would ultimately lead to her death at the hands of the hangman.

When her husband found out about her new lover she was thrown out and forced to turn to crime with her new beau to make ends meet. When petty theft failed to make them any real money they decided to up the stakes and cash in on a friendship Harris had struck up with schoolgirl Jermaine Abrahams, the daughter of a wealthy Cape Town couple.

They visited the Abrahams’ residence when they knew the parents were at work, tied up the young girl and set about robbing the house. However, when someone knocked at the door and Jermaine called out for help Harris dashed to the kitchen, grabbed a knife and stabbed her repeatedly to keep her quiet.

Wracked with guilt

Although they did make off with the jewellery and cash they’d gone for it would never be enjoyed. Smith quickly broke down and confessed while being questioned by the police about an earlier scam and both she and Harris were arrested for the murder.

When she was sentenced to death she became hysterical and had to be carried kicking and screaming from the dock but it was all to no avail as she was hanged alongside Harris and five other men on the morning of 2 July 1989, aged just 22.

Psst... Hey buddy, want to buy some gas?

Apparently the future of crime in southern West Virginia lies with black market gas. According to an article in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph today, law enforcement is preparing for thieves stealing tanker trucks and stealing large quantities of gas from gas stations.

I can picture it now... Gas thieves will be the new robin hoods, stealing from the gas companies and selling to the poor at a substantially-reduced rate. You might play up the robin hood theory to the jury. It could work.

McQueen and his half brother William Burnell spent the afternoon of 17 January 1981 getting wasted on a lethal cocktail of booze, weed and pills.

Hours later, while driving around Richmond, Kentucky, they pulled into a Minit Mart store and held the sales clerk, Rebecca O’Hearn at gunpoint while forcing her to hand over the cash.

Despite the fact that she complied, McQueen shot her twice at close range and made off with the money, some food stamps and the CCTV system to destroy the evidence.

Half a job

Although the surveillance camera was disposed of, when the cops arrested McQueen and Burnell on unrelated charges later that year they found they hadn’t quite got round to spending all of their ill-gotten gains and a wad of cash and the stamps from the Minit Mart hold-up turned up in their apartment.

They were charged with murder and while Burnell was jailed for his part in the crime, McQueen was found guilty of the actual shooting and sentenced to die in the electric chair, which he did on this day 1997, aged 44.

I drove over to see Calvin yesterday.

I first went to the rear entrance of Tiger Wheels - he says he baths there, in the trough where they test the tyres. "Yes", he says, ":it's cold these days, but a man has to wash."

Nobody there, so I drive around the front of the building next to his usual place of business.

A strange sight awaits. There's a guy standing begging at the lights, just where Calvin normally stands. Not that his being there was specifically strange but he looked clean, definitely not the homeless type in any way.

Looking over at the nearby empty car sales lot, I see a guy sitting on the pavement next to two racing bikes propped up against a wall, watching our beggar intently. He's wearing a good quality leather jacket, well made shiny shoes, a cap, and shades.

A strange place to sit for someone so well dressed.

Could it be that he belongs to Mr Beggar, and that those could be their bikes?

I wait.

Folding up his board the "beggar" walks over to the bicycles,

and together the two count their earnings for the day.

Mr Beggar stows his board into a bag,
shrugs on his own leather jacket,

Ok lets look at life in Africa and why in particular I want to leave. Some say that I am just running away while others say that I should be more patriotic.

I beg to differ, firstly in other countries you get Cinnamon toothpaste, you get Apple Butter, Coke with Vitamins and Starbucks. Then of course the fact that our newspapers have gotten to the point where by the headlines read "Wife survives armed robbery" instead of the normal "Robbery gone bad". Here robberies are normally deathly so the mere fact that she survived is a pure miracle.

Perhaps its the lack of poisonous gas inhalation or perhaps it is the fact that the polls are closed and Mugabe's forces are armed to the hilt. How sick must a person be to go ahead with an election when you have intimidated every soul that breathes in your country, when the opposition leader is hiding out in the Dutch embassy? How arrogant, senile and jut plain pathetic must you be? Personally I think he just suffers from S.D.S. and is in dire need of a transplant because one thing that is for sure, no inoculation for the politicus bullshiticus virus will work on that magnaerosolus (a really impressively large aerosol)

I'm not going to get into it any further other than that, I've deleted a book of rants about today's headlines alone. No point in bitching about something you can't change, just get 4 metre high electrified fencing.

Here is the juice on Hi-jackings, perhaps it will educate you on how to get a job as a carjacker or how to prevent one, guess the "what" is up to you...

Before you read on here is a "glossary"

"White area" is a multi racial community that is well off, it is called a white area due to the fact that it was once populated with only that colour walls.

"Sangoma" is a traditional healer that can put potions together, heal AIDS, cure all sorts of strange and wonderful diseases just by mixed a few bones, herbs and well you get the idea.

"Bakkies" Is what I think Americans call a 1 tonner truck? It is the open air transport system here in Africa.

It is R8.50 to every $1

If there is anything else, shout
"HIJACKING MADE EASY - Repentant Car Hijacker Explains How it is Done"
A repentant car hijacker (28) stole and hijacked cars for more than 14 years before deciding to go straight. Now he is a struggling fashion designer who presents motivational talks at schools in Orange Farm, south of Joburg, discouraging youngsters from doing crime. He spoke to Denis Droppa about the murky world of vehicle crime.

Q. 1: Are most cars hijacked on order by syndicates?
Answer: Yes, I would get a phone call to deliver a certain type of car by a certain deadline, and then we'd go out and search for one. If they needed it quickly, I would hijack. If I had a bit more time I'd steal a parked car, as it was safer.

Q. 2: Which types of vehicles are the most popular amongst hijackers?
Answer: We would get orders to steal just about anything. Double-cab bakkies, any make, were in very high demand. Also, "G-strings" (BMW 3-series), Polo's, Mercedes and Toyotas. I'd get paid a lot more for a double-cab, around R16 000, but only about R500 to R6 000 for a car. If it was an expensive car like the "Anaconda" (BMW 7-series) I could get about 15 grand, though.

Q. 3: Which cars have the lowest hijack risk?
Answer: There's no such thing. There's a demand for all sorts of cars, old and new. If the vehicle isn't sold then it's stripped for spares. The only thing there isn't really an interest in is expensive exotics. I once stole a Ferrari from a garage just for fun, drove it around for a while and then left it back at the garage.

Q. 4: Do most of the cars that aren't stripped end up beyond our borders?
Answer: No, a lot stay in the country. They are given new identities, re-registered and sold here.

Q. 5: How effective are modern anti-theft and tracking systems?
Answer: When I was stealing cars three years ago, most of them were a joke. I could break into almost any car and drive it away within minutes. Some cars were very advanced and a lot of work to steal though, like Volvos. With tracking systems, it was usually very easy to find where the device was hidden. While one guy drove the car, his accomplices would strip the interior looking for the tracker's hiding place. Then sometimes we'd place the tracking unit into a taxi and trick the police and the helicopters into following the taxi. Nowadays the tracking systems are getting a lot better though, with quicker response times, and towards the end I nearly got caught a couple of times.

Q. 6: How did you learn how to override these high-tech systems?
Answer: Experience, and learning from other car thieves. We all shared information. If I was having difficulty with a particular car, sometimes I'd dress up nicely and go to a dealer posing as a customer. I'd ask the salesman how good the anti-theft system was on that car and he would give me all the details.

Q. 7: What was your hijacking modus operandi?
Answer: We would get people in their driveways, on the way to work or on their way home. Rainy weather is the best time to steal cars. When it's raining it makes it more difficult for the tracking helicopters to find you.

Q. 8: In a hijacking did you normally go for soft targets like women?
Answer: No, I could take on anyone. I was a professional. Some people wore guns but never got a chance to use them as I was too fast. I'd stick my gun right in their faces and they wouldn't give me any trouble. That's why I never shot or hurt anyone; I was against that. A friend of mine sometimes shot people he hijacked and he used to wake up with nightmares.

Q. 9: Which areas did you target?
Answer: Any white suburb, it didn't matter. I never stole in the townships because people were poor there. I also didn't rob black people.

Q 10: Is that because you don't like whites?
Answer: No, it's because darkies are dangerous. If you rob them, they go to a Sangoma who would "take care" of you.

Q. 11: How much money did you make?
Answer: A lot, but I wasted it all. It was easy come, easy go. Some money would go to police and judges and prison officials in bribes. I got caught a few times but was never convicted. Bribing a police officer to lose a docket cost about R2 000 to R5 000. The only time I spent in jail was awaiting trial. Then I'd bribe the prison guard to help me escape.

Q. 12: Is this the norm, or were you lucky?
Answer: I knew how to find the loopholes and beat the system. Some of my friends were caught and convicted to 8 or 12 years or more.

Q. 13: What made you stop crime?
Answer: I saw I had nothing to show for all those years. I felt guilty for what I'd done and wanted to achieve something in my life. That's why I do community work persuading other people not to do crime, and I'm also a fashion designer. I'm struggling with money now. My sewing machine broke and I can't afford to fix it, but I won't go back to crime. That life is a stupid life.

Q. 14: What is your advice to motorists to avoid hijacking?
Answer: Look out for people following you. Some hijackers spot a car they want and follow the person home. Be aware. If you're suspicious, make a few false turns and see if that car is still behind you. If it is, drive to a police station.

Sometimes I have to wonder what people are thinking. First, there’s a story out of Jackson C

Sometimes I have to wonder what people are thinking. First, there's a story out of Jackson County where a man assaulted a woman with a 10-lb bag of frozen chicken.

In Jackson County an Ypsilanti man has been charged after stabbing his mother with a fork and assaulting a second woman with ten pounds of frozen chicken.

Prosecutors say Frederick McKaney, 40, stabbed his mother in the back of the neck with a fork Monday night.

About an hour later he hit a woman in the head with a plastic bag of frozen chicken. The woman needed five surgical staples to close her wound.

But the craziness doesn't stop there. In Maryland, a man robbed a convience store with a banana.

A man walked into a 7-Eleven store in Monrovia just after midnight Wednesday and demanded money. Investigators said that when the clerk refused, the man became so agitated that he started grabbing items off the counter.

He snatched up a banana and began hitting the clerk, the sheriff’s office said.

Oh man. People are stupid.

As Mr. Wonderful left for a late-night I’m-not-telling (out of the gutter, perverts), I notice

As Mr. Wonderful left for a late-night I'm-not-telling (out of the gutter, perverts), I noticed headlights shining down our street. Curious, I peeked around his van and saw a SUV that was parked at a peculiar angle, facing our front door and nearly blocking us in.

The driver cut the lights then the motor.

Mr. Wonderful went on his way.

I called the cops.

A short while later two cruisers pull up our street and park directly in front of the SUV, high beams in the driver's face.

Whoever it was left.

The two policemen who responded to the call stood in the street, chatting. Sure the SUV was gone, I ran out into the street-lamp lit street to introduce my(hyper-aware)self.

You see, when I moved to this fine state, I was robbed three times in six months. Well, it's not exactly accurate to say I was "robbed" three times. The first time only my wallet was stolen, the second time it was just that strange man screaming at me to 'give [him] the money" in my bedroom door at midnight; it wasn't until the third time that my neighbor stole damn near everything I owned-- including the bacon from my freezer, my first vibrator (R.I.P., B.O.B.) and even my notebooks from class. (Like he'd read them.)

Yeah, I'm hyper-aware.

I shook the officer's hands, introduced myself and told them about my problem with vigilance.

Not only have I experienced the terror every single-woman dreads-- a stranger bursting into your home and bedroom while they sleep-- I've known (and, yeah, dated) way too many people with far too many marbles missing to let some stranger in a "suspicious vehicle" (to use the appropriate walkie-talkie verbiage) sit at the end of my driveway in the middle of the night.

Turns out it was some chick in the midst of a "domestic disturbance."

Well, damn. I'm sorry to tighten the screw in her already shitty night but, let's get this clear:

The only people allowed to have a domestic disturbance at the end of my driveway are Mr. Wonderful and me; got it?!

If you were on death row, we’re sure the last thing you’d feel like doing was laughing. Not so o

If you were on death row, we’re sure the last thing you’d feel like doing was laughing. Not so our next subject for execution – Patrick Knight, who kicked off a joke fest to ensure he went out with a smile on his face.

This mission statement earned the Texan the nickname ‘Dead Man Laughing’. He was on the hunt for a joke he could use in his last, parting speech.

Dark Knight

Of course, there was furore around the competition – after all it was seen as disrespectful. This was a man who’d been sentenced to death for robbery and cold-blooded murder. It was hardly a laughing matter. Some even went as far as to say Knight was doing it to go out in a blaze of glory. But Knight professed it was merely a means by which inmates could while away the hours, days even years of waiting for the inevitable.

This may sound dysfunctional to some, the roots of which lay in his childhood perhaps. After all, this was not Knight’s first dalliance with death. Apparently he’d ended up near-drowned at the bottom of a pool with his tricycle on top of him at the young age of four. Couple that with alcoholism, which was rife in his family and it’s no wonder he started to display touches of behavioural problems before he’d even reached double figures.

Scarpered

Given this extraordinary family life, it came as no surprise that his mum and grandmother completely abandoned him when it came to his appeal, even going so far as to move away from the area and out of reach.

Maybe they were justified – their child was a robber and a murderer, who’d planted bullets in his victims’ brains merely for turning up at their own home mid-burglary.

However, this sudden departure of his ‘loved’ ones meant Knight had no adequate representation to combat the premise that he was a danger to society. So when he appealed against his penalty, there was no strong case upon which to pin a lighter sentence.

No joke

As a result, death remained in place, so Knight sought other ways to play out the last episode of his bleak existence. Hence the joke contest went stellar on MySpace – yep, even death row isn’t safe from the reaches of social networking.

Bizarrely though, Knight chose not to use one of the jokes in the run-up to his execution. Instead, he saved his final speech for the following sentiment: ‘Death has set me free; that’s the biggest joke. I deserve this’, before quipping that they were executing the wrong bloke, but that it was too late.

It was too late alright. Knight’s lights were turned out on this day a mere year ago, after he was pumped full of lethal fluids, aged 39.

Also on this day

Serial killers always seem to gain notoriety. And Americans certainly have a love-hate affair with Charles Starkweather. His story spawned films, songs, you name it, he inspired it and hence he was immortalised. And when you hear the story, you’ll know why.

With his jailbait girlfriend in tow, Starkweather fancied himself a bit of a Jimmy Dean. With all that angst bottled up, he rampaged his way sullenly through Nebraska, Wyoming and Missouri in a killing spree that was to leave 11 dead.

Bullied boy

Ok, so some killers can blame it on poor upbringing, but not Starkweather – his was a loving family environment. But what shaped his future could well have been the merciless bullying as a result of a deformity to his legs and a speech impediment. Yet, he was able to turn it all around after he discovered his talents in the gym at school. His prowess gave him the wherewithal and physical strength to stand up to his oppressors, and in doing so, he eventually seized the upper hand.

Sadly his family life deteriorated and he was eventually kicked out of home, so he became a bin-man and would use his routes to fantasise about bank jobs, planning robberies to while away the time. But that didn’t stop him being submerged in self-loathing.

Nevertheless there was one high point in his life – he fell in love with Caril Anne Fugate, a child of just 14.

Storm brewing

Besotted by the underage girl, Starkweather’s life revolved around the child, and it was in relation to her that he committed his first murder. He tried to buy her a soft toy, but the sales assistant at the petrol station refused to serve him. Starkweather’s anger brewed until at 3am that morning he returned, toyed with the victim by driving him out to a lonely place before they struggled and he gunned the cashier down in cold blood.

A couple of months later, he went round to Fugate’s. She was out but he still managed to get himself into a row with her parents. Incensed, he shot her mum and stepdad, even violently killing her two-year-old sister once Fugate had arrived home.

Body of evidence

The couple then stashed the bodies round the house and hunkered down for a few days, blagging that the household was suffering from a bout of flu. Suspicions soon grew, but by the time the boys in blue had arrived, the deadly duo was long gone.

They absconded to a friend of the Starkweather family, but the ties that bind, didn’t prevent Starkweather from embedding a bullet in the 70-year-old’s head. The couple then accepted a lift from a kindly pair of teenagers, and for their pains, Starkweather shot them too. Apparently Fugate was said to have mutilated the young girl’s body because Starkweather had fancied her.

Bin around

Around this time, money and a car would have been mighty handy, and this is where his bin-man days came in useful. Starkweather knew precisely where to go – the wealthy side of town. Three stabbings, lots of loot and a lovely car later and they were off. But the classic car (a Packard) was to draw attention to the murderous maniacs. So they ditched the comfy motor in favour of a sleeping salesman’s saloon. They accosted the dosing driver, did him in and commandeered his car.

Indeed this latest murder was notable because Fugate was alleged to have pulled the trigger on the victim, prompting Starkweather to brand her the ‘most trigger happy person’, but more of that later.

Car trouble

Some sources state that the problem with this new car was that it was new-fangled. It was the 50s and the car had a brake pedal, which Starkweather just couldn’t comprehend.

By this time, the couple was wanted and his inevitable stalling drew the attention of the authorities and a police chase ensued. But ‘Crime Library’ states, he jumped into the Packard and drove off.

Either way, it was only when Starkweather thought he was going to bleed to death from broken glass that he pulled over.

Tall stories

The couple was taken in and things started to fall apart. Fugate made out that he’d taken her hostage, saying that he’d threatened to kill her parents (remember those dead people who’d been stashed away in the house?). Meanwhile Starkweather first said she had nothing to do with anything, but slowly that story changed and he began to shift some of the blame her way too.

However, it was obvious who the main man was, and in court, while his defence team tried to make him out to be criminally insane, Starkweather painted a far more composed picture. As a result, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. He was hooked up to Nebraska's very own Old Sparky on this day, at the tender age of just 20.

Interestingly Fugate also got life, but was freed after 18 years, for good behaviour.

This story has sparked many an offshoot, not least ‘Nebraska’ – a Bruce Springsteen song as well as providing inspiration behind Oliver Stone’s 'Natural Born Killers'.

A mugger in America was arrested after ignoring rule number 1 of mugging: after robbing your victim

A mugger in America was arrested after ignoring rule number 1 of mugging: after robbing your victim, don't stop to lick their toes before making a quick getaway.

Commander Kevin Casper called the incident, in St. Paul, Minnesota, "weird sexual behavior".

It happened when a 24year old woman left work around 1am Saturday morning. The suspect, a 27year old man, approached her and demanded her keys and phone. Once he got her goodies instead of running away like you'd expect he took time out to remove her shoes and lick her toes!!!

The women was not hurt, and the man was arrested a few minutes later - only four blocks away from the incident so the woman was able to recover her keys and phone. The man is now in custody for all you scared for your feet :D

So, I notice that there's a lot of foot related incidents lately or am I just subconciously finding them??
