"Sempre existe a possibilidade.

At Sony’s Holiday event we were able to get our hands on Valkyria Chronicles, a game that has already been in Japan since early this year. The game is hotly anticipated by PS3 owners here who are yearning for any type of quality RPG for the system. However this title stands on it’s own as there are many things that make this PS3 exclusive from Sega stand out from other Japanese Strategy RPG games anywhere.

First, the CANVAS graphics engine (made specifically for PS3 hardware) really shines as it puts watercolor type art in motion in full 3D without giving up any personality in the drawings itself. The game doesn’t try bringing more realism to the drawings but embraces the artistic value of these animations. The cinematic portion and game play graphics are one in the same. As you watch the story unfold about 1930’s Europe, you will be unable to notice the graphical transition to game play all in crisp animation.

Second, unlike other Japanese strategy games out there, moving on the map is not restricted to a grid system. Even though it is still turn based, you are free to roam the map, scout, advance, and attain cover how you please during the allotment of your turn. Every step your character makes, the length of your turn runs down, forcing you to think and strategize every movement you take before you do. As you approach closer to the enemy, the AI reacts in real time when you are in their line of fire attacking at will. This contributes further to the importance of movement choice in real time. Once done with your movement and positioning, attacking is an option that provides you with an in-depth targeting system that adjusts the potential damage inflicted based on the area of the enemy body you are centered to.

There also seems to be a sufficient number of character classes in this game that each play a meaningful part in your strategy. Yet the numbers of classes aren’t too many that it seems too much for a player to manage. Considering all the class options available, the sum of all choices equates to a balanced game play. After playing through one campaign, it was predictable that if you do get this game, you will be in for the long haul. The graphics are vibrant and distinctive, complimented by a deep and faster than usual battle system, and a story that keeps you interested throughout. This one could be the sleeper hit of the season. SEAN C.

Quais?

In my opinion, this is the best game that was released for the Sega Master System, and a necessary addition to any Sega Master System roleplayer's library.

It wasn't easy being a Sega fanboy back in the days of the Master System. Though it had a better color palette than the NES and the hardware was technically superior, the Master System suffered because of a lack of games. It wasn't until the Genesis that Sega was finally able to get much third party support (the result of the often-discussed policy Nintendo had in place preventing third-party developers from supporting other systems), and the Master System's limited library just didn't have a lot of really good games. Certainly, there were enjoyable titles, but the gameplay of the Nintendo games generally seemed more advanced. So, the loyal Sega supporters like myself waited patiently for more good games to arrive for our underappreciated system.

Fortunately, there were some great games that were finally released for the Master System—games that could not be bought for the NES or any other console. One of these games was the now-classic Phantasy Star, which introduced me to the world of RPGs and had perhaps the best graphics on the Master System (maybe on any 8 bit system).

One of the biggest complaints I had during the 8 bit era was that I finished games too quickly. Most were action titles that could be mastered within a couple of days, and I often didn't feel like revisiting them after one or two playthroughs. It seemed like I really wasn't getting my money's worth. Phantasy Star changed all that for me. Here was a game that I couldn't play through in one sitting. It required a time investment, and I had time in abundance. Finally reaching the end and defeating Lassic, as well as vanquishing the unexpected foe Darkfalz, was extremely satisfying. Unlike most titles, Phantasy Star felt epic, with its progression from a lone girl trying to avenge her brother to a party of trained warriors overthrowing an evil tyrant.

Recently, I played through Phantasy Star again to see if it still holds up after all these years. I can say, with a few reservations, that it does.

The graphics in Phantasy Star still look nice, with large, well-designed enemies. Some of these are mythological, such as centaurs and dragons, while some seem to have been borrowed from more contemporary sources (for example, an obvious Star Wars influence can be discerned in some of the designs). What is great is that each creature is animated, which is an improvement over a game such as Miracle Warriors, in which the enemies are more static and less interesting. Unfortunately, the overhead graphics while traveling are not very impressive, but players will spend so much time in dungeons and fighting random battles that they can be easily forgotten.

For anyone familiar with roleplaying games, Phantasy Star plays very much as you would expect it to. Battles are run through menus in which you can choose to attack, use items, use spells, talk, or run. The only real problem I had with the interface is that I was not allowed to choose which character would attack which enemy, so I was often annoyed when my characters would attack a healthy enemy instead of finishing off one who was low on hit points and removing that enemy from battle. Phantasy Star is an early RPG, though, so I am able to accept that the game lacks this feature, no matter how frustrating my character's choice of targets could be.

Phantasy Star is not as long as a contemporary RPG gamer might expect. If you know the game's secrets, an avid gamer can actually finish it in a day or two. Still, it is a lengthy quest for the time, and after finishing it again, I felt that the length was adequate.

Aside from the few small issues I've mentioned, there is a lot to like about Phantasy Star. Heck, I even like the music in the game. In my opinion, this is the best game that was released for the Sega Master System, and a necessary addition to any Sega Master System roleplayer's library.

Recommended (highly recommended for Sega Master System or RPG fans)

In our last installment of TWGNews Alternate History we took a look at how the gaming world might be if the infamous Sony-Nintendo deal of 1988 had never fallen through. As you may already know, however, that was only one part of the complex and fascinating story behind the Super Nintendo CD. Join us now as we explore the possibilities behind the system's second incarnation, out of the deal struck between Nintendo and European electronics giant Philips in 1991.

The New Deal:

After Nintendo became impressed by a Sony-developed sound chip the two entered into a contractual agreement for the production of Play Station, a system capable of playing both cartridge and CD-ROM based games. The project was still a long way from fruition and almost three years after the partnership had been established the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was out and the Play Station was only just announced.

In late 1991 the Phillips CD-i became available, highlighting the commercial viability of CDs and reminding Nintendo of their relatively dormant venture.

A thorough look at the contract with Sony brought Nintendo to a startling realization. Sony would be assuming complete control over the games produced on their CD format, which would have cut drastically into Nintendo's profit and power in the gaming industry. Instead of confronting Sony on the matter, however, Nintendo decided to perpetuate the cycle of underhanded tricks. Just a month before the Playstation was revealed at the Chicago Consumer Electronics Show in June, 1991, Nintendo executives were in the Netherlands meeting with one of Sony's biggest rivals.

Philips, whose CD-i machine had reached the market long before the Play Station was expected to, accepted an offer to collaborate with Nintendo. In exchange for Nintendo games appearing on the CD-i, Philips would create a CD addon for the SNES. In contrast to the deal with Sony, both systems in this scenario would be CD-capable, and Nintendo would wield control over games on the burgeoning format.

Oh, What A Tangled Web They Weave:

If the mere fact of this betrayal weren't enough, Nintendo made their partnership with Philips known to the public the day after Sony announced the Play Station. Sony tried to hold Nintendo to their contractual obligations, but thanks to the ambiguity of the original document and the legal skill of Nintendo's own Howard Lincoln the company broke free from the longstanding arrangement.

Though Sony would always have a place on their console for Nintendo to insert games, that relationship had come to a bitter end. Nintendo continued their work with Philips into 1992 while Sony was scheduled to deliver the Play Station that same year. At this point a new problem emerged. Game publishers and developers were not keen on producing for such a needless array of formats and the three major players recognized the need to stabilize the market.

This is where the paths diverge. In reality, Philips, Nintendo and Sony finally came to a unanimous agreement on the fate of CD gameplay. However, given the fickle nature of this corporate love triangle it's just as likely that they would have kept to their seperate ways and marched stubbornly towards the biggest fiasco in gaming's alternate history.

A Different Path To The Same Place:

So what if the Nintendo-Philips deal had gone through as planned? By 1994 there would be three different systems from three different companies on the market playing Nintendo games. In order to play the latest and greatest you would have to purchase the expensive CD-i or a bulky addon to your barely middle-aged SNES. The consumer base would be divided and disenchanted, and with Sega's addon policies proving equally frustrating many would withdraw their business entirely.

Another industry crash wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility here, but even in the most optimistic scenario all the parties would be damaged. Sony would abandon their video game aspirations and another brand, perhaps a resurgent Atari, would capture the lead in the next generation. The players would be different, but the dynamic might actually be the same, with former heavyweights Nintendo and Sega trailing a newcomer because of their previous gaffes.

The fourth generation would no longer be reflected on as the Golden Age of video gaming, and TWGNews would be devoted to raising awareness of the Terlato Wine Group. We know all you wine connoisseurs would make your home here, but the gaming industry would be under a very different rule.

That's it for TWGNews Alternate History! Keep tabs on us throughout the week as we'll be updating with a new editorial for each day leading up to our one year anniversary, including the third and concluding part of our Alternate History of the SNES-CD. Also, come Friday for our first podcast with giveaways. :)

Episode 5 of Qore--PSN's venerable advertising vehicle which you are given the honor of paying for--brings a short demo of Valkryia Chronicles, a strategy-RPG from developer WOW Entertainment and publisher SEGA. The demo gives some insight into the mechanics of battle, but omits any glimpse of the story. With the beautiful cut-scenes presented in the opening cinematic, I can only hope there's a story there to match, but it's very hard to tell from the demo here.

On tap is a quick, effective tutorial and a single campaign ("Skirmish") which gives you access to a cast of nine characters. Battles are essentially turn-based, but the shooting and maneuvering of the characters is more comparable to an action game than a Japanese RPG. To keep things in the spirit of strategy games, maneuvering the characters has a cost, and shooting is limited in the same way as well, not much different than a game of Risk for example.

[caption id="attachment_147" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="Who are you? What do you do?"][/caption]

There are several classes here, each with their own specialties. Scouts are lightly armored, can travel far, identify enemy classes from a good distance, and wield a mid-range rifle for attacking when necessary. Shocktroopers are better armored and carry machine guns which pack more of a punch than the rifle, but they can't move very far in a turn and their attacks are most effective at short range. Lancers are very heavily armored and carry a powerful weapon best suited for taking out tanks and other armored targets, though at the cost of maneuverability and ammunition capacity.

Engineers can move fair distances and are best focused on repairing tanks, locating and disabling landmines, topping up ammunition, and fixing destroyed sandbag barricades. Snipers can't move far, but can shoot from a great distance, surprise surprise. Tanks can run people over, destroy barricades, and pack a pretty good punch via it's cannon, though if the treads are destroyed, they aren't able to move far. Medics remove the incapacited from the field (and remove themselves as well, limiting their use), and understandably don't fight or defend themselves too well in the line of fire.

[caption id="attachment_148" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="This does NOT happen during the demo campaign"][/caption]

The campaign in the game is very simple and honestly not that exciting. The enemies that are present are figuratively faceless and there is no exposition of any sort during the campaign. The gameplay is easy enough to pick up, and I imagine is fun when applied to larger scale battles, but without a longer look at how the game gives these campaigns meaning via it's story, its hard to get too excitied about it just from the demo alone. Nonetheless, I do suggest checking this out if you happen to pick up Episode 5 of Qore.

“Just when we thought that we’ll see just PSP3K and DSi on a portable-devices war, Sega

"Just when we thought that we'll see just PSP3K and DSi on a portable-devices war, Sega comes into play. 2009 is the year.....Films, music, camera, microphone, e-book capable... and possibly also games, even though, Sega sources told that it will be mainly for multimedia features ("MP4 player with some basic games functionality, and not a new handheld gaming machine"). I thought that there were enough portable TV -systems and mp4 players on the market" - Sceners.org

Yep, that's right! For those of you guys (or girls) who liked Sega and their console, then this is for you! If you love your Sega Dreamcast, and you are almost like a slave to it, and you miss it dearly when you're

[caption id="attachment_53" align="alignright" width="300" caption="The new Sega Vision."][/caption]

away from it, then after you know this, you won't be. Now you'll be able to take your own little Sega anywhere. That's right, a Sega handheld. The Sega Vision.

This represents a major turn with Sega. After they came out with their last console, the Sega Dreamcast, they stopped and moved from hardware to software and game development. Even though it's Sega, this is one ugly looking console. If I were you, I wouldn't show it to my friends. I take that back. I wouldn't even be seen with it.

It can do many things, like playing games, slightly like the PSP. However though, the games it plays are Java based, so that's a bit of a change right there. Though Sega said, "...it's strengths are not games, it's strengths would be as a portable TV, movie player, camera, and an ebook reader..." I like it, but why would you need an ebook reader? Below is a video on the Sega Vision.

"It's a device you should probably watch in the dark or after a few pints, but it does in fact mark a return to the hardware business for Sega after two generations away from the game. We're just having trouble figuring out what the hook is. Consumers aren't likely to be swayed by simple branding, Sega's storied history or not." - Gizmodo.com

The Sega Vision is slated for release in the year 2009 (next year), and you can expect to pay around $150-$300.
