7:00 am on Sunday, I was soooo sleepy...

Sat. night I was up late, jamming with myself. Figuring out how to work with eJam, which is an on-line service that allows musicians all over the world to play with each other. I hooked up my equipment and was playing with writing a test song. I was getting into it so ended up staying up much later than I should have needing to get up early on Sunday.

I had been staying in most of the week, doing this n that, reading, computer, web setup, even a freelance design job I had picked up. Other than I couple of short runs and the interview I was dormant. Therefore I was set on going to the Dragon boat races on Treasure island. Not so much that I was so into the races, but I wanted to get out, take some pictures, be around a few people, not sit home and think.

At 7:00 am I turned over looked at the clock and figure out I could go for another 30 min of sleep, which ended up being another hour. Oh well. Not like I needed to be there I finally arrived at 10:30 to the race. That gave me about 1 hour, since I had planned on going to Zen/Chan practice.

Treasure Island is a former military base on a small island across from San Francisco. The race scene was pretty crowed with people, but not to the point it was uncomfortable. It was like being at a Chinese festival.

Lots of booths and stands. There was a Chen Tai Ji Demo, there was also a couple playing traditional Chinese instruments Which I catch on my way out. I did not get to listen for long as I was on the move by that time.

So for the races, I was able to get a spot right near the finish line. I could have gone right up to the line but I like the spot I had. I got to watch about 3 or 4 races.

There were a lot of teams there from all over, even a team from Hong Kong. I had seen lots of practice groups over in the estuary while I've been giving sailing classes, but never sat and watch one.

They are pretty fast considering they are just man powered. As with any sport it is more fun when you know a team or someone in the race.

Still it was good for me to be out, sitting in the sun by the water watching the race and taking pictures, not sitting home thinking about, If and when I was going to here something about the interview.

Surround by all the Chinese language I got a sense for not being in Northern Ca but overseas somewhere, like Singapore. There was a bit of excitement during the race when one of the boats almost crashed into another, missing by fraction. Then heads off directly towards another, it was wild.

Next stop was some 40 min away. So I headed back across the Bay Bridge to Fremont for Chan/Zen practice.

I got there right on time to the center. Today talk besides meditation was on purifying chi and how important that is to understand that just having strong chi or energy is not always good. It needs to be purified Chi. It is impossible to avoid bad chi in this world and our society unless you go live in a cave, alone, in the mountains, or an Island. What makes our practice different from most others is that with our sitting we purity not only our chi, but others there by helping not just ourselves but those around us. This is on of the reason why sitting Zazen with others is so helpful to our spirit. It was good to sit with my spiritual family today and in a space of positive Chi. I needed the spirit lift.

After leaving the group I stopped at Whole Foods for a little shopping. I ran into an old Kung Fu workout sister. It was good to see her, even though we were not that close when she was training, but she was ok. Most people thought of her as a dragon lady, but since I was her senior, I did not get afficted as they did. What is weird is not seeing someone for a long time then they ask , so how are things... You have that moment of, should I say how things are really are, or do the Oh, I'm fine talk, because people do not really want to hear how you really are. Then there is the thought that one should sound positive, and be positive in your thoughts. All that flashes through one's mind before saying, I'm good. :-)

And, as is usual with life, I have just read another travel book that forces me to contradict the position I took in my last post. I now realise that there is another way to get a good travel book. Which is to have a good travel theme (plus of course, the obligatory, good writer).

Preston explores the world of oriental Martial Arts in this book. Which is a cool subject to write about, since it probably meets all of the criteria of your average avaricious publisher. The subject is of interest to many people across the world ("more people interested means more people buy the book, you dummy"), it involves travelling to 'exotic' places, has multiple situations that allow the writer, and therefore the reader vicariously, to careen from undisguised scepticism to wide-eyed wonder within the same page and offers the writer numerous opportunities to take digs at himself (a travel-book staple these days, methinks).

And for all of those reasons, it works. Read it.

Green is the catch phrase for environmental awareness, responsibility, action these days. Appropriat

Green is the catch phrase for environmental awareness, responsibility, action these days. Appropriate. I have always been pro-environment it has been part of my spirit since youth. It developed a serious conscience in my Hippie/lovechild days of the 60's, it matured with my study of "Zen/Chan" and understanding the spiritual connection with all things.

As Team Captain for the USA-Concord, branch of Eco-flag GSA I try to promote when ever possible Green Sport awareness. When I sail to events I fly the Green Eco flag. When I give seminars I speak of our connection. I brought the idea to the CCKTCM Kung Fu Federation the Green philosophy at our last tournament. They agreed to be connected with the movement. I was greatly disappointed when later I was told there was a change of mind. My first Mantis Shifu said the Federation "mind" was too "old world" It is clear now. No matter, my school will carry on with the Philosophy and support. This is part of the reason I have my school and do not teach for Sisuk. I need no one's ok for what I teach or support.

So all this lead to I came across a post about a "green jobs" movement. :

{Green-Collar Jobs Campaign

The "green wave" is coming.

A new, multi-billion dollar economic sector is emerging, bringing new opportunities in green construction, clean technology, urban agriculture and energy. Our goal: ensure that this green economy is strong enough to lift people out of poverty.

Green-Collar Jobs Campaign creates opportunities in the green economy for poor people and people of color through policy advocacy, public outreach, and an employment pipeline - the Green Jobs Corps.} this is a nationwide campaign. One of the events was held in Oakland today. I decided I would attend and see what was going on.

The crowd was smaller than I expected, it was however good to see the large diversity of young people. The event was more or less directed toward the up coming generation.

The music, the talk, the job leads, the style. Not really much for us graying warriors. There were a few of us there, kicking around :-)

The message of the event was good, the future is being transfered to the the new generation, there needs to be a new thought to energy, jobs, power and education. As well as stop the violence!

The message was well recieved... Hope is alive.

It was that time again to head down to my Shifu’s for practice. I was feeling a bit lazy about

It was that time again to head down to my Shifu's for practice. I was feeling a bit lazy about the drive and even going out. I had been in the house for most of the week, a couple of short furries. One of which was to the bank to pull out most of our money, which turned out to be the day before the bank said they were bankrupht!! We did not have enough money in there to really be concern as it is FDIC , but still...Yokkata!

My other short venture was to visit Sisuk and a talk with him about his website. The rest of the week was spent, other than my teaching class, in front of the computer, trying to dissect Sisuk's webpage so I could update it, on facebook, Multiply talking election, and job hunting.

Anyway not much live people contact, as usual. So class was the most people contact I will have had for the week. It is over an hour drive to Campbell to see Shifu. The drive in a way is a meditation time. The traffic was fairly light, so it was nice. Time to reflect on our soon to be coming, in a few years, move to Nihon, our even sooner giving up our condo and move, friends, and/or the lack of them...

It was a quiet night down at Shifu's only 4 or 5 others. I had brought my Jian but did not even pll it out. When I arrived, Shifu was on the floor showing some take down technique. It looked very simple. I watched more and listened. He use hardly any effort. The others tried it, but could nto quite get it. I listen to him and watched. then I tired it. We could not get it. All of us used too much force and effort to do it. Shifu made it look SO easy and effortless. There was not even a pain factor envolved on the reciever he just was being forced down, with out power. I watched, and listened, It had to do with timing, balance and feel. we tried, not quite there. Shifu demo'd on me so I coudl feel what was happening. It was really really in the timing of the other's balance. A small step in and light push to upset their balance , then as the tried to recoved, pressed down. Very simple, very hard. There were ways of inflecting some pain to help the process but that was not what the drill was about. It was about feeling and timing.

After a while I that I worked with another class mate of some reviews of two man drills. It is nicr working with a peer than my students, not only do I get to correct a couple of my mistakes, but the element of speed and power can be added. I had him show me a grappling drill that was shown at the seminar that I missed. a simple but good drill, I want to show my students. We went through that several times. Next up he and other went through a two man form that is on my list of thigns to learn. The Seven Star Mantis Two Man Bumbo. I have leanred the Tai Chi mantis single form and it would be easir to learn the other side of that, but eveyone says that it is not as good as the 7 star for training. I've seen the TCM version and it does not really match the other side. Tonight I saw the 7 star version and it does match exactly the single side. So that will be high on my list of things to learn next year.

After that, it was time to eat. Shifu had cooked deep fired chicken, someone had made corned beef and cabbage. They ordered veggie pizza for me, it was good! I was glad I brought beer for them. I should not have been eating that late, that much, but once in a while is ok. Tonight since it was few of us, we sat and ate in Shifu's office. Usually we bring out chair to the practice area. Tonight we did not. Also a change we usually talk kung fu, tonight we talked history and politics. Early USA history about Philadelphia and Philly cheese steaks, as well as historic stuff, Independence the like and the current politic. Even felt McCain vp choice was ridiculous. Also Obama may not be the best but he is the lessor of evils for our future.

Shifu brought up it will be our last Friday session of the year. Next month Halloween will be on the day, most will be out, Nov, is right before Thanksgiving (another topic of discussion), then Christmas in Dec. So we will not be having a practice meeting until Jan. There will be however the annual holiday dinner party. Amazing the year is almost over and what a downer it has been overall. Life is like that at times yang flows to yin, which sooner or later flows back to yang. It is the riding it out that is the challenge. I need to spend more time training/practicing, it is too easy to get caught up in the Yin aspects. Having good health and love are our most important life treasures. With that one can bare through other life challenges.

One good thing this week. I did get a interview for a job. it was a phone interview so it was just phase one, but at least I got that. I was concerned my resume was so bad or lacking or had a mistake I did not see that no one was contacting me. It had been months since I've gotten even an interest response. Of course having several thousand people applying for the same job no doubt does not help my chances when one is overwhelmed with choices.

For five years and counting, I've practiced kung fu, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu to be exact, partnered with Sun Style Tai Chi. The first is flowery and fluid, yet explosive with speed and power. The second is slow and measured, with compact, flowing motions.

Most people think I break boards, wear a gi (the uniform found in karate, judo, or tae kwan do), and yowl like Bruce Lee. Mostly, I practice forms, stance, and breathing, all in sweats and a t-shirt. Because of the Chinese family lineage of our styles, we don't have a ranking system if colored belts. I'm not sure how I would rank in such a system anyway. My skills are fair to middling, more theory than practice and quite honestly, I'm not in a hurry to test my skills beyond friendly sparring.

So why bother even pretending to hit people? Essentially, that is the crux of what I do. Martial arts are designed to subdue, injure, or even kill another human. This is not the toolset of a pacifist.

Kung fu teaches me to listen.

The body often tells us things we choose to ignore, little warning signals of discomfort that eventually become things like back pain or carpel tunnel syndrome. It can be the smothered pangs of anxiety that, left unchecked, turn into fight-or-flight panic attacks. Been there, done that, and I can't believe now that I ever did. Nothing is worth such breakdowns, not unless you are fighting for your fucking life. Yet, I see people accept these discomforts as part of their status quo, something to put up with, to muddle through.

Listen. There is music in your body, where your weight shifts from one leg to the other, where your heart keeps time and your breath takes in the cool air and warms it before sending it out again. Listen to your thoughts snap with little synaptic crackles as they scurry about your head. Your senses are a conversation with yourself waiting to happen.

Listen and maybe you'll surprise yourself with what you hear.

Alles, was du bist und was du wirst, liegt nur in dir selbst.

Quale significato veicola in queste lingue?

As anyone who practiced traditional Chinese martial arts (wushu or kung-fu) knows, these fighting systems almost all derive their fundamental inspiration from animals and animal behavior. For instance, you have your Tiger style, Dragon style, Crab, Crane, Praying Mantis, Monkey, Bear, etc.... So basically here you have 'humans' impersonating animals. I wonder how this relates to the human ego, which is after all is the animal mind, and the desire of getting rid of it in order to attain true human nature. In other words, can traditional Chinese martial artists attain true humanness if they continue to show such a high affinity with the animal kingdom?

What about Shaolin? These monks seem to be as dedicated as they are spiritual. Can they reach true humanness, while they are simultaneously so profound in their emulation of the animal kingdom?

so last night at kung fu i had my first taste of being tossed around like a wet noodle. although in my case, it was more like stale rigatoni. gnocchi, maybe. it was fun, i was always into tumbling ever since spending my adolesence on the gymnastics team and cartwheeling my way across my backyard. Still... it has been a while, and gotDAMN my ass got huge since then. it was like someone strapped a volley ball to my waist and when i tried to get up i just rolled backwards. i was laughing at myself, at least. and i think my partner rather enjoyed having a volley ball pressed up against his belly. ahem. ; )

i also bought a new pair of wushu training shoes, since the merrells i've had for a while have a zipper on top... which had been fine up until last night. the top of my foot has a lump the size of a dunkin' donuts munchkin from the stupid zipper digging into me as i was getting my ass whooped all over the place.

i have a long way to go before i'll be considered proficient at shaolin kung fu (a blinding headache from all the falling kept me from finishing the last 15 minutes of class) but i still love it to pieces, injuries and all.
