Maybe it's a plug.  Maybe all I'm really saying is "watch this film."

Maybe the film speaks for itself.

I am contented to say that regardless of the type of style of music you listen to, there is something in this to please the tongue of any musical taste.  Something here is transcendent; that is, something here will defy your idea of music, but also define it.

Sigur Ros is an Icelandic experimental pop/rock group.  I use the term "pop" very loosely, for their music is simply incomprehensible in that diction.  They have been around since the late 90's, and have produced several records.  They have not been as mainstream as many other artists of their genre, but they are gaining recognition, with assistance from YouTube.

Recently, the band put out a documentary film entitled Heima, a Icelandic word meaning "home".  It is partly a music documentary, and partly a documentary of the beautiful Icelandic landscape.  The content of the DVD is comprised of several free, unannounced shows the band put on in different towns and locations around Iceland.  The final product is an unparalleled musical journey, which is sure to amaze each viewer on some level.

What Sigur Ros has done in their musical journey will leave you with eyes that yearn for the images to last forever, and ears that hope for the sound to never stop.  In this film, nature becomes an amphitheater and you, the viewer, become a passive observer.  Perhaps you are a bystander who heard these haunting sounds, and followed the sound to the source; perhaps you are a bird, resting briefly from flight, only to soar away again as the music lifts your wings; perhaps you are the landscape itself, with a beautiful symphony being played in your harshest regions.

The lyrics to much of Sigur Ros' music is meaningless.  By meaningless, I do not mean that words are being misused, simply that words are not being used at all.  To clarify, Jon (the band's lead singer) simply creates a melody or harmony with a varied falsetto; he produces vocal inflections with no real meaning.  This is, however, not universal to their form- a large portion of their songs are comprised of true lyrics with real words.  The issue then resides in the fact that the band, being true to their heritage, sings in Icelandic, and therefore we, the monolingual, are left with lyrics that are truly incomprehensible.  But here a new beauty arises, for we have (perhaps) our first real glimpse of what it means for lyrics (or lack thereof) to compliment the music, and not simply music that compliments lyrics.  In other words, Jon's voice has become the last instrument in the symphony.

The film, and editing done therein, were Oscar worthy in my opinion.  There is a scene which recounts an old fishing factory which had long since closed, which is no huge matter, but the way in which the history is presented, along with the song selection, will bring one to tears.  Another scene depicts a controversial damn which was built in Iceland, and subsequently had negative effects on the surrounding ecology.  The song played during this scene is simple, but the empathy it creates will cause one to weep.

I have provided the film (thanks to YouTube) below, in order from top to bottom.  My advise is to throw on some headphones, sit back, and watch the film in full.  You will be glad you did.

priedes mežā tiešām aug

Le PukkelPop est considéré depuis longtemps comme l'un des meilleurs festivals alternatifs d'Europe. Contrairement à Rock Werchter qui joue la carte des grosses machines qui rempliront le festival, le PukkelPop propose une sélection bien plus pointue avec 8 scènes très différentes les unes des autres réparties sur 3 plaines. Evidemment, pour un festival d'aussi grande envergure, impossible de passer à côté de groupes confirmés comme Editors, Sigur Ros, The Killers, Roisin Murphy et les toujours très imposant Metallica,... Mais la progra est définitivement ultra alternative avec pres de 200 groupes à découvrir! De mon côté, je retiendrai les concerts de The Do et de la superbe énergie qu'ils dégagent, la puissance de Bloc Party, la qualité musicale de Girls in Hawaii, de Hot Chip et leurs membres complètement dingues et de Sigur Ros qui jouait dans des conditions bien meilleures qu'à Werchter vu qu'il faisait nuit. Du côté électro Ricardo Villalobos s'est permis un set extrêmement pointu avec des morceaux très sombres pour 2 heures assez cérébrales tout comme Carl Craig. On était donc bien loin des stéréotypes techno des clubs populaires aux blondasses pulpeuses et machos gominés :) .  A l'opposé de Ricardo et Carl, Boys Noize, le Berlinois, a martyrisé nos oreilles avec un set agressif au son ultra saturé ce qui n'a pas laissé de marbre la foule compacte entassée dans le Dance Hall. Par contre, déception pour Editors malgré leur grande présence scénique, Cold War Kids qui n'aurait jamais dû être programmé sur la trop grande scène principale, Tim Vanhamel, Sons & Daughters et MGMT dont le live n'a duré que 40 minutes. Et puis il y'a les surprises comme cette soirée complètement décallée année 50 sous un petit chapiteau, cours de danse et maquillage en prime pour ceux qui étaient dans le trip. Belle idée aussi que ce mini cinema qui proposait des films d'artistes ou de groupes. Enfin, un gros point positif pour le soleil qui ne nous a pas laché durant ces 3 jours! En résumé, De bons concerts, beaucoup beaucoup de monde, 8 scènes très interessantes et un temps magnifique, notons juste que le prix de la bouffe ( y'a pas d'autre mot ) est assez exagéré ( plus de 2€ le coca coupé à l'eau et 3€ le ravier de frites à peine rempli ). 

Les photos de concerts, c'est pas ce qu'il y a de plus simple... Mais malgré cette qualité médiocre, j'espère qu'elles vous feront vivre ou revivre le festival comme il se doit.

NEW YORK (June 27, 2008)—Nat Geo Music, the music division of National Geographic Entertainment, will Webcast an open-air Náttúra concert live from Iceland on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Two of the world's most important and visionary musical entities, Björk and Sigur Rós, will headline the free concert.

The event will be available exclusively at worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET (begins at 8 p.m. BST/London or 7 p.m. GMT/Reykjavik).

To be held in a large park near the centre of Reykjavik, all of the performances will be during daylight, with Iceland's capital city and dramatic rolling scenery providing a perfect backdrop to what is expected to be one of the biggest concerts the country has seen. The Náttúra concert looks to raise awareness of the impact of the growing aluminum smelting activity on Iceland's natural landscape.

"One of Nat Geo Music's main goals is to offer artists and experts who care about global culture and the environment an outlet to create awareness for important issues. Spotlighting these amazing artists performing live in a spectacular backdrop allows our worldwide audience to enjoy great music and become aware of Iceland's environmental concerns and join the conversation," said David Beal, president of National Geographic Entertainment.

Commenting on the gig, Björk said: "Too often battles being fought for nature turn into something negative and into mudslinging. We will not go that way, we are not saying that this and that is forbidden, we are rather asking 'what about all these other possibilities?' The 21st century is not going to be another oil century but rather a century where we need to recycle, think green and design both power plants and our surroundings in harmony with nature."

Sigur Rós, who released its fifth album, "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust," this week, believes the issue of aluminum smelting in Iceland is one that can no longer be ignored. "We are not a political band and don't think musicians should set themselves as spokespeople on anything at all, but sometimes you see things going on in your own back yard and find that just as a human being you cannot stand by and do nothing. The changes that are going on in Iceland need to be the subject of debate and not snuck through the back door because no one lives in the wilderness and there is urban apathy or a general lack of awareness," said Sigur Rós vocalist Jón Thor Birgisson.

Sigur Rós, de retour ! Et c'est bon. L'album dont on voit la pochette ci-dessus, sort le 23 juin. Déjà que les autres albums étaient littéralement EXCELLENTS, celui-ci déchire tout, enfin je trouve. Bon j'ai dit qu'il était pas sorti et ensuite je dis que je l'ai écouté, alors la preuve est ici :

Was ist das bloß für eine Zeit? Da prasseln einem die guten Stücke nur so um die Ohren. Ja man wird geradezu verwöhnt. Die Kreation musikalischer Höhen erreicht meine Gehörwindungen aus dem fernen Island, und zwar namentlich vom Quartett Sigur Rós. Die befinden sich ja seit geraumer Zeit auf meiner persönlichen Short List und werden dieser Positionierung auch mit ihrem achten Album mehr als gerecht. Die sphärischen Klänge, irgendwo zwischen Slo-Mo, Ambient und Post-Rock, werden auf dieser Veröffentlichung mit einer erstaunlichen aber wunderbar harmonierenden Dynamik gemischt. Und nicht nur musikalisch gehen Jónsi, Goggi, Orri und Kjarri neue Wege. So stellten sie "með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" zwei Wochen vor dem offiziellen Release komplett als Stream auf ihrer eigenen Website sowie dem Musik-Portal Last.fm und weiteren Portalen bereit. You may ask, what has driven you to such self-sabotaging madness, and I wouldn't blame you. The answer to that was in a new icelandic phrase I spotted while on facebook "með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust" which means little more to me than NEW SIGUR RÓS ALBUM, which for some reason I hadn't picked up on till now. The title translates into english as "with a buzz in our ears we play endlessly" which to me suggests some considerable excitemtent in their latest release, something that is all to welcome, many of their tracks were beginning to blur for me, and the same sort of ambient, blue-whale like songs were starting to flood my media player.

My only knowledge as yet is of the artwork, name, tracklisting and opening track. From what I can see, this is a slightly (and I mean slightly) different direction from the icelandic slow-motion rock quartet, a more jaunty turn than the sounds of Von and (), which I think is epitomised in the artwork:

Gobbledigook, the album's opening track is, at 3:05, a relatively short track for the band, and opens considerably more suddenly and with more la-ing than one is used to from Sigur Rós, a surprise overal, I must say. But this newer, faster, more guitar-based style is not to the detriment band's easy to listen to, uplifting, inventive style. This is still very much a Sigur Rós track, a very welcome addition to my ever growing collection.

BONUS INFO

On my ever expanding and hard-disk filling search for more Sigur Rós tracks, I came across one of their EPs, Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do, a three track piece made for choreographer Merce Cunningham's piece, Split Sides, which also included music from Radiohead, who haven't released their contribution. From wiki hunting, I discovered that the three tracks, aptly named Ba Ba, Ti Ki & Di Do, sync together when all played at the same time, to form another, complex track. Being the procrastinating geek I am, I tried this, and believe me it's amazing. I'll treat you to it some time.

Una de las bandas que ha logrado combinar calidad musical con popularidad es Sigur Rós; con el pasar de los años esta banda ha logrado cautivar a más personas alrededor del mundo, incluyéndome, con su instrumentación ambiental y sus voces agudas utilizando un idioma poco común a nivel de composiciones pop como es el islandés o su gibberish (jerigonza) llamado hopelandish. He aqui el disco que llamó la atención del mundo. "El buen comienzo" de Sigur Rós.

En un inicio, tenía la idea que las líricas del cd no tenían relación entre sí. Después de analizar las líricas coincido con las ideas de algunos que este puede ser un cd conceptual. Juntando algunas ideas de cada canción, resumiré el concepto:

Estoy meditando, pensando en tí; pienso en tí, te miro dormir todas las noches; sé que es imposible amarte, pero alguien tiene que intentarlo de los dos; porque tú me has salvado del sufrimiento, sin tí no soy nada; me oxidaré, no puedo asimilar estar sin tí; estoy llorando, me he destrozado, he vuelto a la realidad; todo era perfecto, pero un nuevo día comienza; esto fue un buen comienzo.

En lo personal, mi cd preferido de Sigur Rós; además de los elementos electrónicos instrumentales que generan el ambiente tan característico de la banda, se escuchan en algunas canciones acompañamientos sinfónicos, cuerdas principalmente, y otros instrumentos como trompetas que terminan de perfeccionar el ambiente melancólico en algunas canciones.

Acerca de la canción. El título que le da el nombre al cd. A mi parecer, el epílogo del cd conceptual. Ágætis byrjun significa "Un Buen Comienzo" en español.

PS. Agradezco publicamente el esfuerzo realizado por Ocnos, un sitio de fans de Sigur Rós en español, en la traducción de las líricas del islandés al español y los comentarios del cd. Fue clave en el entendimiento y crítica de este cd. Gracias :D

Prima idee va tine de generatia actuala cu mici tente politice pentru ca va trebui dusa o paralela intre generatia precomunista respectiv postcomunista. Nu am prins multi ani inainte de revolutie insa mi-au fost destui incat sa-mi pot compara copilaria cu cea a junilor de astazi.

Dupa cum stiti, caderea comunismului a dus la democratie, democratia a dus la liberul acces asupra oricarui tip de informatie, de produs , de idei. Ca urmare romanii au inceput sa importe, si importa in continuare, orice moda, sarbatoare sau expresie, orice cuvant ce suna mai "elevat". precum burghezii bucuresteni stalcitori de franceza si ironizati de Caragiale. Romania e saraca, dar toti prichindeii au celulare, Romania e saraca, dar Dacii vezi din ce in ce mai rar.

Romania are doua categorii: prea saraci si prea bogati, insa doar cei din urma simt nevoia sa se faleasca. Nu stiu unde sa-i incadrez pe cei plecati peste hotare la munca, dar si aici avem doua categorii: cea care tace si face orice pentru a-si intretine familia de acasa si cea care atunci cand se intoarce in tara natala e plina de fite, de parca lumea nu stie ce ai facut tu acolo, de parca acum esti superior, soseaua e a ta frate, ai numere de Italia, in satul tau cine mai e ca tine? Mai mai ca ai inceput sa uiti si lb romana, ca si cand la plecare ai fi stiut-o.

Copiii de astazi...ce faceam eu la 20 de ani sau ce aveam, ei au la 15 ani sau mai putin. Generatia de azi se imparte in doua categorii : emopunk si manelisti. In oricare din cele doua variante tunsura va fii pe primul loc, apoi hainele largi sau mulate si machiajul strident sau intunecat. Emigrarea masiva a populatiei in floarea varstei a dus la disparitia modelelor familiale. Ca urmare, adolescentii isi aleg drept model personalitati de obicei din muzica, pe care incearca sa le imite. Astfel apare dorinta de maturizare, de exploatare trupeasca, dorinta de a fii in trend cu tot ce se intampla.

Dorinta de a ne integra intr-un colectiv ne duce la falsitate.
