K-Salaam and Beatnik - The World is Ours (Free Mixtape), NY is Burning (Free Mixtape)

K-Salaam and Beatnik are two New York cats who know how to make a hot mixtape. Their first big hit was "The World is Ours" which featured the likes of Papoose, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Sizzla, Dead Prez, Bobbito Garcia, Suheir Hammad, Capleton, Black Ice, Saigon and Kardinal Offishal.

This mixtape is straight heat, I still listen to it even though its about 2 years old.

The duo is back in the news these days, after releasing "NY is Burning" a mixtape both in response to the Sean Bell killing and in anticipation of their first commercial release, "Whose World is This?" Though this tape isn't as good as their first, its still great work, and it should get hip hop fans really excited for this summer, when "Whose World is This?" comes out.

Don’t Mess with My Myth!... Not While US Be Having a Elephant-Ass ‘Race’!

Isn’t it interesting how much the discussion of the issue of ‘Race’ is like physical exercise? How so? Simple. The more we try to avoid it, is the more we need it.

Now that the matter of ‘race’ has been brought front and center like overdue Malcolm X American chickens rushing home, some people are scampering (or trying to), some are whimpering, some are weeping and moaning, full of attitudes of innocence, trying to hide from the reasoning. Naturally, the stress of such unwelcome activity is causing much gnashing of teeth, not to mention the pain that comes from suddenly having to use muscles long allowed to wither from avoidance of said exercise.

The present racial/moral deficit could be the result of careless apathy, crippling laziness, paralyzing fear, or acute depression…or maybe something much worse. How else to explain this terrible atrophying of human conscience, this wholesale abandonment of goodwill, not to mention good sense? Whatever the reason; there’s a race being run, and the stakes are huge. And most of us are woefully unwilling, and unprepared for the contest.

This exercise in American-style get-‘fit’-quick reminds me of the exhilaratingly militant, sweaty, and gloriously painful, days of soccer training as a youth. The days of learning that the prize was worth the pain. Now, as I enter my sixth decade, I give thanks daily for the health-benefits of the discipline that came with doing those extra exertions, then; the extra burn of additional crunches after the end of the mandatory daily practice; and voluntarily running the extra miles up the into the magnificent hills, from Papine, past Industry Village to Gordon Town.

Ah, those were the days; of stubborn sand training on the beach. And the nights of climbing the fence at UWI’s swimming pool to steal some laps…and risk drowning, because so many of us couldn’t swim, but were too proud to admit we were scared of diving off into the deep end. Ah, yes! I can still feel the life-asserting aches and pains, and the risks of real damage —psychological and physical— amidst the striving after victory, vindication, or at least justification. I would do it again though, given the opportunity. It made me healthier, stronger, braver, and hopefully a better person.

Unfortunately, the difference and the deterioration of the human, social, and physical environments of Papine, Tavern, August Town, Hermitage, and even UWI, is starkly exemplified by the difference between then and now; between Tavern alumni Rastaman dj/chanter Brigadier Jerry then, and Munga, the so-called Gangstafari, or August Town’s Sizzla Kalonji’s slide from moving, motivational lyrics into sex-and-gun drama.

Thank Jah that reggae artists of the caliber of Dwayne Stephenson who still have the “audacity of hope.” Some of us remember when and how the guns and the coke came calling on our youths, and mourned as the soccer field became the battlefield; when youth stop making the ball run and started to making the blood run, cold.

Meanwhile, the largely Eurocentric book-socialists of the 1970’s UWI find themselves in disarray, presently, just as the crisis of capitalism is exposed to even the staunchest imperialist today.

So, Mr Right and Mr. Left, Tell I Wheh yu get Fiyu Mythos From?

I well remember their Hegelian-Marxist-Leninist mantra that ‘race wasn’t/isn’t an issue.’ The Eurocentric mythos of Jamaica’s left was clear from the seventies, and it continued even after the European socialists/communists were telling Moscow what to do with their democratic centralism! It continued even after Gorbachev had started to dismantle Russian hegemony with his Glasnost strategy. I clearly remember my own long-running arguments with some of UWI’s infantile-left leadership; all in the spirit of ‘critical support’ of course. But then, as far as they were concerned, how could I-man know anything of pertinence? After all, I was/am just a poor, uneducated, son of the working class, defending the alleged ‘religious opium’ of Rastafari, and the working poor, while barely avoiding being accused of ‘mysticism’ and called “reactionary lumpen,” by the now-proven left-opportunists. Because I was ‘merely’ a youth activist from the organic reality, of the local community; and the island-wide youth club movement of the sixties through the seventies wasn’t really seen as ‘revolutionary. Nor was Pan-Africanism. Nor was Rasta.

The Rases in Grenada who helped to topple Gairy’s regime were barely tolerated by those they helped put into power, and were quickly marginalizes, and marked for death or, at least, persecution. The same thing applied in Jamiaca; where the Rasta phenomenon remained something of an embarrassment to the new ‘educated’ elite, despite the fact that then, as the bearers of the African banner of Ethiopianism and Garveyism, along with the Black working poor, and other Africa-centered people, I&I set the play, made “thrue” pass, that enabled Michael Manley to score a decisive political win in 1972, with the ‘rod of correction’ from Haile Selassie I firmly in his hands.

But, the chance that Jamaica would come to grips with its racial-cultural identity in a socio-political way only existed for a brief moment; i.e. between the Rodney Riots of 1968 and the early years of the nineteen-seventies. That was before the book-leftists took over the commanding heights of Michael Manley’s socio-political revolution, which had started to allow Jamaica’s Black suffering ‘massive’ a little more. The Jamaican left-intelligentsia took over, insisting that the only choices Jamaica had was between Washington (white) and Moscow (white).

Is it any wonder that they, and those who gained their creds under their UWI-left-led, alleged ‘color-blind’ leadership, never made any serious attempt to put Marcus Garvey in his rightful place in the pantheon of The World’s Greatest Thinkers, as a Senior Philosopher…and Unashamedly Black, like the theology of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr.

Get on your mark! (…of the Beast, or otherwise). Get Set…!!

We can hope, pray (and work it!) that the people of the United States, and the rest of the world with them, will be able to look back at the present time of ‘racially’ charged recognition-and-admission; looking back from a future place-n-time of justice, mercy, and reconciliation; and be truly thankful that, for the first time, at last, we came to our senses in time (pun intended), at the turn of this new millennium. Pray that we all become better people, as Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I admonished, “…larger in outlook…”

It’s not going to be easy. But it’s not as if we have any choice. Because, even though there are some who still think, despite the collapsing of most systems (natural, cultural, and synthetic), despite their on-going bluff and bluster and violence, and despite their evident and presumptuous assurance of escaping to another safer place —presumably off-planet— the ‘game’ of ‘race’ is just about over for this stage of human ‘development.’

As I write this, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., is having a quiet, intense, and reasoned teevee conversation with PBS’s Bill Moyers, an excellent and relatively humane journalist, who, among other things was President Lyndon Johnson’s press secretary; and who, therefore, had a front row seat to the drama of the Dr. Martin Luther King/Civil Rights era.

Reverend Wright, like so many of his pastoral predecessors, including Dr. MLK, has helped to bring the reality of the on-going cultural-racial-economic antagonism out into the open…again. Not that the antagonism is hard to recognize, IF one wants to see it. Anyone who has kept tabs on the cultural-racial-economic war trumpeted by such notables as Ronald Reagan, Bill Bennett, Patrick Buchanan, and Rush Limbaugh and the hosts of The Mediacrity, right and left, not to mention the average middle-American white citizen, has long been aware of what time it has been/is. We all have been too (justifiably) scared, not to mention unprepared, to deal with the real King Kong standing in the living room, staring at us. And no pile of religious dogmatic (whether Judaic, Islamic, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Hebrew-Israelite, or Rasta) monkey-crap is going to be big enough to hide behind.

The Raging War For The Minds of Humanity

Firstly, anyone who has been an observer of the global Hollywood-ization phenomenon and it’s neo-liberal make-up, is already well aware that the collective mind of much of the world’s population has been shaped by what is probably the most powerful art-form created by man (moving pictures), and which is controlled by what is probably the most racist (it’s a close competition with organized religion) institution on the planet. From the KKK-inspiring “Birth of A Nation” to “King Kong” and all its sequels, to the more recent offerings too numerous to name, the gratuitous killing off of Blacks in movies is so old and established a routine, that we hardly bother to mention how boldly obvious and blatant it is; so much so that it has become a kind of pervasive sick joke that even Blacks have come to ‘accept.’ Sadly, as we watch Blacks surge towards their own Black-Hollywoodeification, neither the economic gains, nor the ‘glamour and the glitter’ can blunt the obvious pricks of the many thorns in that bed-o-roses. (raspect to Bro. Buju Banton).

In considering the underlying racist religion-ism, mythology and philosophy, so effectively sold by religion, education, and especially Hollyweird, that allows so many Americans (Blacks as well as Whites) to justify their self-righteous outrage against David Walker, Marcus Garvey, Paul Robeson, Dr. King, Louis Farrakhan, and most recently, Jeremiah Wright, Jr, I still remember Bill Moyers’ impressive PBS interviews with arch-mythologist, Joseph Campbell. In those interviews and his books, especially “The Power of Myth,” Campbell pointed to a need for a new, “planetary” mythos. In doing so, he was saying essentially the same thing as Emperor Haile Selassie I, who insisted that we must become a new kind of human being…for which our education and experiences have not prepared us…larger in outlook…able to move beyond loyalty to nations, to loyalty (and loving care) toward a whole planet.

It is not clear whether Joseph Campbell was saying the same thing, or for the same reason; because the role of academia —especially social scientists, anthropologists, psychologists, and economists— has been as skillful as it has been powerful in the debasement, depredation, and destruction of non-white peoples around the world. It was not surprising, therefore, to discover that George Lucas, in preparing to create the new space-age mythology of the “Star Wars” movies, sequestered Campbell at his (Lucas) Skywalker ranch. The pity is that Lucas’ “Star Wars” was/is still about (surprise!) war and conquest, and that the ‘stars’ in his version of a “new heaven and a new earth” are mostly still supremely white. White supremacy is certainly persistent— whether in a galaxy far, far away, or here and now, on planet Earth.

Yo!, Sideliners, Anyone For Some Sit-ups? Or Some Pull-ups? Or is it ‘Crunch’ Time?

So, in the here-and-now, here on Planet Earth, 2008, we have to escape the sticky, stifling grasp of the triple powers of Hollywood’s, Academia’s and Religion as they service the age-old white-supremacist agenda; and come to grips with issues of not only race, but also economics, and mind-control. And learn how they play out against, or with, each other in this Elephant-Ass race to the White (say what?) House. (Oh, how I would love to have Richard Pryor around to crack on this election).

On a more serious note, I continue to wonder how Bob (Marley) would chant on this present situation. One Love, you say? Yeah. Right. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly is it about the word “UNTIL…” (as in “until that day…) that we don’t understand? So we hide from our collective work and responsibility on behalf of the same poor, oppressed, blind, and imprisoned sufferers charged to us by prophets; Isaiah, Yahshuah, Marcus Garvey, Haile Selassie I, Louis Farrakhan, Jeremiah Wright, and so many others; and we presently hide behind a perverted singing of, irony of ironies, the Rastaman’s “One Love.”

Thankfully, some people (Whites as well as Blacks) understand the clear difference between seeking revenge and simply seeking justice. And racial justice is as good a place to start as any.

But, like Deep Throat told Woodward and Bernstein during Watergate…always follow the money.

The bottom line, beyond the ever present smoke-screen of ‘Race,’ is this: The greed-driven, religion-justified, white-supremacist, genocidal Fascism that Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie I and Ethiopia resisted so valiantly in 1935 to 1941 — while challenging the world’s conscience to do the right thing or face the global consequences — has never died out.

Therefore the challenge to resist the militaristic corporate greed of Fascism still stands. Ironically, this is, in fact, the very mission that too many alleged new-age Rastafarians couldn’t seem to care less about, as they increasingly try to distance and insulate themselves from challenging issues of race, class, and caste, while cozying up to the Babylonian Beast.

White supremacy, Greed, and Fascism, (or, as it inventor Benito Mussolini described it “Militant Corporatism”) and their resurgence in Europe —and in an America Empire that is, by its own admission, the self-described re-incarnation of the philosophical and cultural glory of Greece, and the offensive military attitude of the (allegedly Holy) Roman Empire— are still the real enemies of the planet, NOT ‘race’ or racism.

Race is merely a still-very-effective smokescreen. And that smokescreen has to be cleared up, even as we race into the future, hopefully towards peace with justice, and mercy. And true prosperity. For all.

So, fellow contestants or cooperants, fellow racers, fellow strugglers, fellow fallen fighters…as Nesta Marley say: “Rise and take your stand again.” it’s about time.

And remember, ultimately it’s really about justice, not revenge. Let’s reason…let’s start with economic justice.

Einreiseverbot für Sizzla

Der jamaikanische Staatsbürger Miguel Collins (Sizzla Kalonji) wird wahrscheinlich kein Einreisevisum für Deutschland erhalten. Das Bundesinnenministerium (BMI) hat uns heute mitgeteilt, dass aufgrund unseres Schreibens das BMI und das für die Visaerteilung zuständige Auswärtige Amt "die erforderlichen ausländerrechtlichen Maßnahmen zur
Verhinderung einer Einreise in den Schengenraum getroffen" haben.

Genau darum hatten wir BMI und AA Ende März gebeten.

Der jamaikanische Staatsbürger Miguel Collins (Sizzla Kalonji) ruft in mehreren seiner Songs zu Mord und Totschlag an Schwulen auf. Sein Name wurde nunmehr offenbar ins Schengener Informationssystem (SIS) gestellt mit der Folge, dass er keine Einreise in den Schengenraum erhält. In diese nichtöffentliche Datenbank werden u. a. Personen eingetragen, die im Schengenraum unerwünscht oder zur Fahndung ausgeschrieben sind. Auch das AA hatte uns telefonisch informiert, die Einreise sei nicht erwünscht, da die deutsche Botschaft in Kingston bestätigt habe, dass der Interpret vor allem volksverhetzende Titel im Programm habe.

Diese Entwicklung ist mehr als erfreulich, nach dem erst kürzlich die Behörden des kleinen Südamerikanischen Staates Guyana vorgemacht haben, wie so etwas geht:

Guyanese authorities have banned a Jamaican reggae artist known for anti-gay lyrics from performing in the South American country.

Interior Minister Clement Rohee says Bounty Killer is no longer welcome because gunfire erupted at an April 19 concert.

Rohee announced the ban Monday. He says Bounty Killer's lyrics promote violence and celebrate criminal behavior. He also banned the Jamaican singer Movado.

Minderheiten scheinen sehr gerne und immer mal wieder irgend was zu fordern. Denn wer am lautesten schreit, wird ja wohl am meisten Recht haben. Schwule sind darin speziell talentiert. Aktuell nutzen Schweizer Schwulenorganisationen das Fahrwasser einer europäischen Bewegung gegen jamaikanische Musiker. Und schaffen es damit, sich und ihre Oberschwestern in die Medien zu bringen. Das nervt. Lustig ist hingegen das ganze Drumherum. Zuerst mal die Fakten: Sizzla tritt am 24.5. in der Roten Fabrik in Zürich auf. Sizzla ist ein Dancehall-MC. Und Dancehall ist wohl die homophobste und sexistischste Musikrichtung überhaupt. Die Rote Fabrik wird als Kollektiv geführt, so richtig mit Einheitslöhnen, und das rot im Namen steht nicht nur für die Farbe des Gebäudes. Aber einen Plan für den Umgang mit real existierenden fremden Kulturen scheint man dort auch nicht zu haben.

Schon seit einiger Zeit versuchen Schwulenorganisation, den Dancehall-Künstlern mittels des Reggae Compassionate Acts das Maul zu stopfen. Also: keine schwulenfeindlichen Äusserungen! Aber, oh weh, nicht all die bösen, primitiven und rückständigen Karibikneger wollen ihre Kultur für ein paar weisse Betroffenheitsfanatiker opfern. Also musste ein neuer Trick her. Und was bietet sich hier besser an als die Medien (Tagi, Tele Züri, etc.) und noch mehr Betroffenheit? Dazu noch ein bisschen drohen, denn, sollte es zu homophoben Äusserungen kommen, so behalten sich Pink Cross (Schweizer Schwule) und LOS (Lesbenorganisation Schweiz) „alle rechtlichen Schritte vor“ (Quelle: gay.ch). Und die Rote Fabrik lässt verlauten, dass „Diskriminierung in Text und Aufführung nicht akzeptiert wird“. Uuuuh, ob der schwarze Mann wohl schon nicht mehr schlafen kann vor lauter Angst?

Schwule und Linke tendieren dazu, die Pluralität an Lebensformen zu propagieren. Jeder soll immer alles machen können. Kein Weg ist falsch. Alle Menschen sind gut. Aber es tauchen Probleme auf, wenn man mit Menschen zu tun hat, deren Weltbild sich auch mit vielen schönen Theorien kaum integrieren lässt. Und man hat keine Antworten auf die Fragen: Wie tolerant muss man Intoleranten gegenüber sein? Wie geht man mit real existierenden Andersdenkenden um, die sich nicht um Gutmenschengerede kümmern? Wie wichtig ist einem die Meinungs-, Äusserungs- und künstlerische Freiheit wirklich? Die Lösung: Verbieten! Drohen! Sanktionieren! Diskreditieren! Bestrafen! Und ganz, ganz viel rumheulen!

Natürlich ist es nicht schön, in Jamaika bekennender Schwuler zu sein. Teilweise ist es sogar lebensgefährlich. Für uns schwer vorstellbar. Nur: Das ist noch in den meisten Teilen der Welt so. Vielleicht sollte man Heterosexualität als Wurzel der Schwulenfeindlichkeit verbieten?

Entweder entscheidet man sich, ein universales Wertesystem zu vertreten, welches dann aber nicht nur Partikularinteressen dienen sollte (wie zum Beispiel dass man gegen Diskriminierung Schwuler ist, sich aber einen Scheiss um die Stellung der Frau in der islamischen Welt kümmert, und sowieso, die Araber sind ja ganz Arme wegen der bösen Nazisraelis). Oder dann hält man einfach mal die Fresse und lässt die anderen ihr Ding durchziehen. Schwestern, chillt mal, raucht ein bisschen Weed, und vielleicht trefft ihr dabei ja mal sogar einen Schwarzen und könnt ihm zeigen, dass nicht alle Schwulen abartig und krank sind. Wahrscheinlich könntet ihr damit sogar etwas erreichen, im Gegensatz zum aktuellen Betroffenheitsfeldzug, der die Fronten nur noch mehr verhärtet. Ich für meinen Teil habe kein grundsätzliches Problem mit Schwulen, aber wer rumheult, stösst auf taube Ohren – und das nicht nur bei mir. Bombaclat!

ITUNES REMOVE HOMOPHOBIC SONGS FROM CATALOG

iTunes stores in Canada has removed several anti-gay songs by Jamican dancehall artists, following complaints from GLBT rights organizations because the lyrics advocated the killing of gay people. These artists include Elephant Man, Buju Banton, and T.O.K. Concerts by such groups have been cancelled for similar reasons in the UK, as well as in Canada. And calls have been made for Canadian officials to deport Elephant Man, as well as Sizzla (another musicial act encouraging violence to GLBT men and women).

The United States, however, have not acted in response to Canada's decision to ban the songs on iTunes, as it is still available to listeners.

Herrn Stefan Seitz hat sich die Mühe gemacht, auf meinen Post "Die Rosa Liste München in Symbiose mit dem Bounty Killer" etwas ausführlicher, als sonst in den Kommentarspalten üblich, darzustellen, wie sich die Lage auf Jamaika und der Umgang mit bestimmten Jamaikanern aus seiner Sicht darstellt. Nicht zuletzt wegen der interessanten Schilderung der Lebensumstände auf Jamaika und der von ihm angesprochenen Aspekte im Umgang mit dem Thema 'Hassmusik' möchte ich den Kommentar nicht im dunklen Kommentarkeller belassen:

Vielen Dank für ihre sachliche Reaktion und die Veröffentlichung meines Kommentares. Diese Reaktion ist nach meiner Erfahrung mit Homo- und Lesbenvertretern ungewöhnlich.
Vielmehr begegnete mir Zensur und offene Anfeindungen. In einer Diskussion mit Schwulen wurde meine jam. Ehefrau als "bitch" und Aids-verseucht bezeichnet, nur weil sie Jamaikanerin ist.

1. Ich lehne Gewalt gegen oder Diskriminierung gewaltloser "Minderheiten" strikt ab.

2. Meine Frau (28 Jahre in JA aufgewachsen) erfuhr erst hier von den Problemen welche Schwule in JA (angeblich) haben.

3. Ich habe JA seit 1997 zehnmal teilw. für mehrere Monate bereist und eigentlich immer fern der Tourigebiete mit und unter Jamaikanern meist der ärmeren Bevölkerungsschicht gelebt; sowohl in Kingston als auch auf dem Land.

4. Ich kenne zwei eigentlich drei Homosexuelle. Diese leben unbehelligt. Man wundert sich, daß m diese nichts mit dem "anderen Geschlecht" anfangen können/wollen. Aber diese werden als Menschen, Nachbarn, Schwester/Bruder behandelt.

5. Nach meinem Eindruck hat das jam. Volk ganz andere Sorgen als sex. Minderheiten nachzustellen. Was hinter verschlossenen Türen stattfindet ist Privatsache. OK, Homosexuelle gelten als "funny" . Auch heterosexuelle Paare sieht man im Alltag kaum oder nicht. Wenn dann Homosexuelle ihre Neigung in der Öffentlichkeit zeigen, gilt dies als Provokation und das Fass läuft über. Ein Bsp. : Bei uns ist ein Kiffer sehr dumm, wenn er vor der Polizeistation seinen Joint raucht. Aber ich stimme zu, daß Prügelorgien an sex. Minderheiten unerträglich sind. Aber diese Gewaltausbrüche kommen oft vor und meistens sind nicht Homosexuelle die Opfer.

6. Natürlich ist JA eine homophobe Gesellschaft. Dafür gibt es verschiedenste (kulturelle) Gründe, welche allerdings von LSVD etc. ignoriert oder geleugnet werden.
Z.B. war anale Vergewaltigung und Folter eine der unsäglichen Barbareien der weißen Sklavenhalter. Die jam. Gesellschaft ist in Teilen noch immer zutiefst traumatisiert.

7. JA ist auch eine sehr gewaltätige Gesellschaft. Sie hat eine der höchsten/die höchste Mordrate der Welt (+/- 1500 jährlich bei 2,6 Mio. Einw). Nirgendwo werden von der Polizei bei "versuchten" Festnahmen soviele Menschen getötet wie in JA(220 jährlich). Auch wenn es zynisch klingt, sind Homosexuelle bei einem geschätzten Anteil von 5% an der Bevölkerung mit 30 Ermordeten (jeder einzelne ist einer zuviel, wenn er aufgrund seiner Sexualität Opfer wurde) in den letzten acht (?) Jahren weit unterrepäsentiert. Wobei nicht bewiesen ist, daß er deswegen ermordet wurde oder es sich um eine Beziehungstat oder sonstige "übliche" Gewaltverbrechen handelt.

8. Laut einer Umfrage würden 70% der Bev. das Land gerne verlassen (Armut, Chancenlosigeit, Gewalt, Korruption, hemmungslose Selbstbereicherung der Eliten). Obwohl in JA teilw. bürgerkriegsähnliche Zustände herrschen, ist der einzige anerkannte Asylgrund "verfolgte sex. Minderheit". Und das macht in JA die Runde.
Diese Info habe ich von ausreisewilligen Jamaikanern.

9. Patois ist eine sehr komplexe von Nicht jamaikanern vorerst kaum verständliche Sprache. Auch ist sie sehr direkt, mitunter derb bis anstößig und häufig nicht wörtlich zu übersetzen. "Bun" entspricht oft nicht dem "burn", "kill" nicht "kill" etc. Ein "battyman" oder "chi-chi-man" ist nicht unbedingt ein Homosexueller. Es kann auch eine unbeliebte/gehaßte Person sein. Ich kann z.B von mir sagen: mi bun Bush, di Pentagon an`Washington. Mi bun politriks, Baylon, Soddom an`gomorah straight, seen. Chree (Three) times a day, all a dem. Verstanden? Ich mißbillige, ich verachte. Aber ich rufe nicht zu Gewalt auf.
Der allergrößte Teil der Dancehallfans hierzulande hat wohl erst über die Medien erfahren wovon die jam. DJs angeblich singen.

10. Schließlich sind nach meinen Erfahrungen diese Anti-Hass-/Anti-Dancehall- Kampagnen selbst hasserfüllt. Es geht um Rache und Vergeltung. Erzwungene Entschuldigungen werden nicht akzepiert. Glauben sie im Ernst, daß man so Aufklärungsarbeit leistet, Vorurteile beseitigt? Durch fehlende Toleranz und mangelndes Verständnis der Geschichte des anderen (welche LSVD etc. ja für sich einfordert). Nein man gießt Benzin in`s Feuer. Sie bringen mehr Leute gegen sich auf - hier und dort- als sie für ihre Sache gewinnen. Bounty vermittelt seine Abneigung seiner Kultur und seinem pychosozialem Hintergrund entsprechend... Und wurde/wird dabei zu oft fehlinterpretiert, absichtlich oder nicht.

11. Leider gibt es in JA noch wesentlich umfassendere Menschenrechtsverletzungen. Weiß eigentlich der Menschenrechtsverterter der Grünen Volker Beck davon? Er missbraucht wohl seine Macht weil er im Machtzentrum an den Hebeln sitzt (Erwirkung eines Einreiseverbotes trotz erteilten Visums).

Noch eine Ergänzung:

Ein typisches Mythos:Homosexualität ist strafbar und wird mit Haft und Arbeitslager bestraft.
Falsch: Homosexualität steht nicht unter Strafe, sondern der anale GV (egal opb Mann-Mann, Frau-Frau, Frau-Mann, Mensch-Tier, Mensch-Toter). Arbeitslager in diesem Sinne gibt es schon lange nicht mehr. Nach Auskunft einer Richterin (entfernte Familienangehörige) wird von diesem Gesetz wohl nur bei sehr anstössigem Verhalten Gebrauch gemacht. Wenn überhaupt kommt es wohl nur zu Geld oder Bewährungsstrafen.
Zudem ist ja auch die Beweisführung sehr schwierig. Wo kein Kläger, da kein Richter.

Soweit Stefan Seitz. Ein paar Anmerkungen dazu:

Nach meiner Einschätzung wird in der Diskussion zu wenig unterschieden zwischen der Situation auf Jamaika (a) und dem Umgang mit Musikern wie Bounty Killer und Sizzla (b).

(a) Die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse auf Jamaika stellen sich mir nunmehr als noch viel problematischer dar, als bisher angenommen. Der Umgang der Menschen miteinander ist dort anscheindend von einem besonderen Hang zur Gewalt geprägt; es sind daher die Lebensverhältnisse dort insgesamt zu hinterfragen. Hierfür gibt es in Deutschland jedoch kein (ver-)öffentlichtes Bewußtsein. Dass sich schwule Menschen und Verbände wie der LSVD vornehmlich um die Lebenssituation schwuler Männer auf Jamaika sorgen, ist nicht vorwerfbar.

Dass auch nicht schwule Menschen (offenbar in zahlenmäßig wesentlich größerem Umfang) Opfer von Gewalttaten werden, macht Gewalt gegen Schwule nicht weniger schlimm. Allerdings verstehe ich die Ausführungen von Herrn Seitz auch nicht dahin, dass er die Situation beschönigen will. Sicher wird es auf Jamaika homosexuelle Menschen geben, die unbehelligt leben. Genau so wäre es verkehrt, jeden Jamaikaner für gewalttätig zu halten. Gleichwohl wird nicht zu leugnen sein, dass Schwule ein besonderes Angriffsziel sind. Das Auswärtige Amt teilt in seinen Länderinformationen hierzu mit: "Ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung ist Gleichgeschlechtlichen gegenüber feindlich eingestellt. Es hat in jüngster Zeit mehrfach Übergriffe gegen Homosexuelle gegeben."

Für die dort lebenden Schwulen ist es, je nachdem wo auf Jamaika sie sich aufhalten, offenbar überlebensnotwendig, ihre Homosexualität zu verbergen. Eine Lösung ist das auf Dauer nicht. Es kann nicht sein, dass schwule Männer, die ihre Homosexualität nicht verbergen können oder wollen, nach gewaltätigen Übergriffen auch noch wegen angeblich provozierenden Verhaltens für die Gewalttätigkeit verantwortlich gemacht werden. Um so bemerkenswerter ist vor diesem Hintergrund die geduldige und behutsame Vorgehensweise von J-Flag.

Es wird oft versucht, die Vorfälle auf Jamaika mit einem Hinweis auf die geschichtliche und kulturelle Entwicklung des Inselstaats zu erklären. Die Ereignisse zu Zeiten der britischen Herrschaft mögen eine Erklärung sein, eine Entschuldigung oder gar Rechtfertigung sind sie nicht ansatzweise. Heute schwule Menschen zu verfolgen und zu töten, weil in längst vergangenen Zeiten Sklavenhalter und andere mit Herrschaftsgewalt ausgestattet Personen ihre Untergebenen mit erzwungenen Analverkehr (und damit einer als besonders demütigend empfundenen Form der Bestrafung) bestraft haben, zeugt nicht von Geschichtsverständnis und nicht von einer Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Kultur (sonst wäre vielleicht aufgefallen, das die Vergewaltiger und diejenigen, die sie angeordnet haben, wohl kaum Homosexuelle waren und dass das damalige britsche Strafrecht kaum ein größeres Verbrechen als Homosexualität kannte). Es zeugt aber von der Abwesenheit von Verstand und Vernunft.

Der Hinweis auf die Rechtslage in Jamaika ist richtig. Er zeigt aber auch wie Makaber die Denkweise auf Jamaika ist, wenn, so die offizielle Lesart, Analverkehr zwischen Männern in einem Atemzug mit Analverkehr mit Tieren oder Leichnamen genannt wird. Und das dieses Gesetz im Ergebnis nur auf die Bestrafung des Sexualverhaltens homosexueller Männer abzielt, dürfte kaum in Zweifel zu ziehen sein. Homosexuell zu sein ist an sich zwar auf Jamaika nicht strafbar. Jedoch kommt es hier nicht auf die gesetzestechnische Situation an. Die überlieferten Lynchjustizakte zeigen, dass eine homophobe Gesellschaft keine Gesetze braucht, um Homosexualität an sich zu bestrafen. Und ein homophober Richter wird immer Mittel und Wege finden, um zu einer Verurteilung zu kommen. Ein Vergleich mit der Situation im Iran, am Beispiel des Makwan Moloudzadeh, drängt sich auf.

Ich halte es für sehr gut, dass die 'Verfolgung wegen der sexuellen Orientierung' in immer mehr Ländern als Asylgrund anerkannt wird. Die sexuelle Orientierung gehört zu den 'Verfolgungsgründen', an denen der Verfolgte nichts ändern kann. Dass dieses in Bezug auf Jamaika offenbar der einzige Ayslgrund ist, darf nicht die kritische Lebenssituation anderer Menschen auf Jamaika verdecken. Jedoch wäre es schäbig, denjenigen, die sich um die Belange schwuler Menschen auf Jamaika kümmern, vorzuhalten, sie würden sich nicht genug um die Verbesserung der Lebensverhältnisse insgesamt auf Jamaika bemühen.

(b) Anders als in machen dem angelsächsischen Rechtskreis zugehörigen Staaten findet die Meinungsfreiheit bei uns ihre Grenzen in den Rechten anderer Menschen. Beleidigungen und Ehrverletzungen muss niemand hinnehmen. Und Aufrufe zu Verbrechen sind nicht von dem Recht auf freie Meinungsäußerung geschützt. Es mag dahin stehen, ob die kryptischen Äußerungen der hier zur Debatte stehenden jamaikanischen Musiker überhaupt den Gehalt einer Meinung haben. Ich bezweifel das sehr und sehe sie schon deshalb nicht von dem Recht auf freie Meinungsäußerung geschützt. [Genau so wenig sind allerdings auch die unsäglichen Sprüche, die sich Frau Seitz anhörenden musste, von diesem Recht geschützt. Es sind einfach idiotisch-dumme Textfragmente, die treffliche Rückschlüsse auf ihre Verwender zulassen.]

Freilich mag man darüber streiten, wie die fraglichen Sätze von Bounty Killer und anderen zu übersetzen sind. Allerdings hat noch niemand dargelegt, dass dieses Sätze keinesfalls als Aufrufe zu Gewalttaten gegen Schwule aufgefasst werden können. Vielmehr wird beschönigend darauf hingewiesen, dass die Formulierungen eher eine allgemeine Gesellschaftskritik und allenfalls eine auf tiefe Glaubensüberzeugung herrührende Mißbilligung der Homosexualität beeinhalten würden. Solche verniedlichenden Auffassungen sind, mit Blick auf die Kontextuierung, gelinde gesagt, abwegig. Verständnisprobleme im Sender-Empfänger-Verhältnis haben ihre Ursache in aller Regel auf Seiten des Senders. Es kommt nicht darauf an, wie etwas gemeint ist, sondern wie es verstanden werden soll oder verstanden werden muss. Bounty Killer ua haben in den letzten Jahren nichts unversucht gelassen, sich das Image von Schwulenhassern zu geben. Die von einigen von ihnen unterschriebenen Erklärungen (Reggae Compassionate Act) sind das Papier nicht wert, auf dem sie geschrieben stehen. Ich habe nie verstanden, wie man sich mit solchen lächerlichen Erklärungen zufrieden geben konnte. Die Herren Musiker haben ausserhalb des räumlichen Geltungsbereichs dieser Erklärungen ohne weiteres ihre altbekannten Phrasen gedroschen und ihren CD-Verkauf nicht gestoppt. Aus dem Gesamtbild, das diese Dancehall-Interpreten liefern, ergibt sich, dass hier ganz gezielt Hass gegen Schwule geschürt wird (vgl die Zusammenstellung von OutRage). Und es geht damit mitnichten um Kultur oder um frühere Unterdrückungen und Schreckensherrschaften. Es geht um das hier und jetzt. Ich habe im fernen historischen Jamaika niemanden vergewaltigt oder vergewaltigen lassen und habe auch nicht die Absicht, es jemals zu tun. Bounty Killer und andere rufen zu meiner Ermordung auf - hier und jetzt! Da gibt es keine Interpretationsspielräume.

Die Diskussion über die Liedtexte ist nicht neu. Seit Jahren schon beanstandet OutRage immer wieder diese Verse. Wären die Texte anders als schwulenfeindlich zu verstehen, hätten sich die Interpreten schon längst dazu ernsthaft erklären können. Sie hätten die Texte entschärfen können. All das ist nicht geschehen. Diese Interpreten rufen zu nichts anderem auf, als Schwule zu verfolgen, zu mißhandeln und zu ermorden! Von jedem anderen Deutungsversuch würde ich mich 'für dumm verkauft' fühlen. Aber es ist wohl auch so, dass Schwule sich in Deutschland 'für dumm verkaufen lassen' und alles hinnehmen müssen. Da vergeht kaum eine Woche, in der nicht irgendein Fernsehblödelbarde saudumme Sprüche über Schwule ablässt. Immer mehr tauchen auch in Deutschland diese extrem-kirchlichen Gesundheiler auf. Dann gibt es eine ganze Reihe von deutschen Musikern, die mit ihrer demonstrativen Schwulenfeindlichkeit Geld verdienen. Und jetzt auch noch diese Hetzer aus Jamaika. Muss ich das wirklich alles geduldig ertragen? Warum sollen Schwule immer alles hinnehmen (das, wenn es andere gesellschaftliche Gruppen betreffen würde, Medien und Politik in unglaubliche Wallung bringen würde)? Jeder Mist darf über Schwule gesagt werden, aber wenn Schwule sich - mit dem von unserem Rechtsstaat vorgesehenen Mitteln - einmal zur Wehr setzen, dann ist das Geschrei groß. Warum wird, wenn es um Schwulenfeindlichkeit geht, immer alles beschönigt? Es ist dann immer alles nur falsch verstanden, falsch übersetzt worden und nie war es so gemeint. Irgend etwas stimmt doch da nicht!

Im Verhalten des LSVD vermag ich, von der ein oder anderen nicht glücklich geratenen Formulierung, keine Fehler erkennen. Der LSVD hat die zuständigen Behörden auf möglicherweise bevorstehende Straftaten aufmerksam gemacht. Wer damit ein Problem hat, sollte nicht mit dem LSVD, sondern mit seinem Rechtsstaatsverständnis ins Gericht gehen.

Volker Beck widerum wird kaum die Zeit und die Kraft haben, sich um jede Menschenrechtsverletzung auf dieser Welt zu kümmern. Ein Blick auf seine Homepage offenbar jedoch unmittelbar, dass er nicht nur die Lebenssituation schwuler und lesbischer Menschen im Blick hat. Ich vermute, er wird über die Umstände auf Jamaika im großen und ganzen informiert sein. Seine Möglichkeiten, darauf Einfluß zu nehmen sind gering. Darin, dass er bestimmte Vorgänge in Deutschland thematisiert, sehe ich keinen Machtmißbrauch. Es ist vielmehr bedenklich, dass außer ihm und einigen wenigen anderen Abgeordneten kaum ein Volksvertreter daran Anstoß nimmt, was für Volksverhetzer unter dem Deckmantel der Kunst vor das Volk treten.

Musiker aus Ländern, die nicht tagtäglich auf unseren Bühnen vertreten sind, sind auch Botschafter ihres Landes und ihren Volkes. Bounty Killer ua haben die riesengroßes Chance, für ihr Land Werbung zu machen, aufzuklären und Missverständnisse aus der Welt zu schaffen. Sie haben die Möglichkeit, auf echte Missstände aufmerksam zu machen und könnten ihren Leuten vor Ort mehr helfen, als es die nationale und internationale Politik kann. Sie vertun diese Chance mit jedem neuen Hasskonzert(versuch). Offenbar bedeutet ihnen ihr Schwulenhass mehr, als das Wohlergehen ihres Heimatlandes.

Afgelasting concert homofobe Bounty Killer overdreven?

5 voor 12 en Petrol hebben het concert van Bounty Killer afgelast na druk vanuit de politiek en vanuit de Holebifederatie. Maar is zo’n maatregel wel nodig? De meningen zijn verdeeld.

Muzikant en docent Gert Keunen ziet een pro en contra. Keunen doceert aan de Rockademie in Tilburg.

"Als je het mij persoonlijk vraagt, dan ben ik daar voorstander van, ja. Ik ben in een westerse cultuur opgevoed waarin elke vorm van homofobie verwerpelijk is. Je kan deze zaak ook vanuit een ander cultureel standpunt bekijken en dan wordt het iets moeilijker. In Jamaica geven ze homofobie met de moedermelk mee. Dat zit daar ingebakken in die cultuur. Homoseksualiteit is er zelfs wettelijk verboden. Iets tegen homo's verkondigen, heeft daar dus een breder draagvlak. Als je het zo bekijkt, is die homofobie ergens begrijpelijk. Maar als je dan culturen bij elkaar gaat brengen, kan dat botsen. Bij zo'n concert hier kan je misschien een handleiding geven: dat het verwerpelijk is, maar dat de artiest daar zelf niet aan kan doen. Die stellen zich bij die homofobie geen vragen meer, dat is iets heel typisch"

Zo'n afgelast concert schept misschien wel een precedent. Want wat bijvoorbeeld met de meer dan seksistische hiphopacts? "Als je consequent bent, moet je veel gaan verbieden dat niet met onze culturele achtergrond strookt", bevestigt Keunen. "Want wat is het verschil tussen iemand die vrouwonvriendelijk of homo-onvriendelijk is?"

Jan Maes van het Cameleonfestival in Turnhout verwacht van ‘zijn’ reggaezangers dat ze niet bewust voor homofobie kiezen.

"We vinden het belangrijk om een artiest te boeken die niet te veel homofobe praat verkoopt of er bewust niet voor kiest. Je moet een onderscheid maken tussen groepen die de harde lijn volgen en die er anders mee omgaan. Want homofobie hoort nu eenmaal bij de Jamaicaanse cultuur. Of het concert van Bounty Killer terecht of niet werd afgekeurd, spreek ik me liever niet uit. Je kan je inderdaad de vraag stellen hoe je dan om moet gaan met de vele groepen die geweld op het podium preken."

Meer reacties dan verwacht

Concertorganisator Eric Smout had niet zo veel reacties verwacht (De Standaard, 28.03.2008). Voor de verontwaardiging heeft ook begrip. Voor het Centrum voor Gelijkheid van Kansen en Racismebestrijding (CGKR) volstond de schriftelijke garantie dat Bounty Killer op het podium geen homohaat zou prediken. Maar voor Cultuurschepen Philip Heylen en de Holebifederatie was dat onvoldoende.

“Het Centrum heeft een mandaat om de gelijke kansen van holebi's te verdedigen”, zegt Eef Peeters van het CGKR. “Aanzetten tot haat of geweld tegen wie dan ook is wettelijk verboden. We kregen voldoende garantie dat dit niet tijdens het concert zou gebeuren. Het Centrum heeft niet om de annulering gevraagd: preventieve annulering zou verregaande censuur zijn.”

Gewraakte songs

Bounty Killer ligt onder vuur omdat hij in vier songs, schrijft de krant. 'Mr. Wanna be' (1999), 'Another level' (2000), 'Man a badman' (2001) en 'Look good' (2002) - heeft opgeroepen om homo's te verbranden, te verdrinken, te stenigen of uit te roeien. In 2003 schrapte hij twee Britse concerten omdat de Britse holebifederatie Outrage daarom een proces had aangespannen.

Het was N-VA-er Piet De Bruyn, zelf homo, die het vuur aan het lont stak. Toch verwachtte hij geen afgelasting.

“Er was een schriftelijke bevestiging dat de artiest geen homofobe teksten zou brengen; wat mij betreft was het dossier gesloten. Kijk, Bounty Killer is bijzonder homofoob”, zegt De Bruyn. “Dat mag niet prettig zijn, maar het is niet illegaal. Dat hij in zijn teksten verder gaat en oproept tot geweld is wel illegaal. Ik ben een legalist: ik zou het natuurlijk prettig vinden als die man afstand nam van zijn standpunten. Maar zolang hij hier niet oproept tot geweld, heb je geen grond om juridische actie te ondernemen.”

Pink Wave

Paul Van Goubergen presenteert Pink Wave op Radio Centraal. Hij is gay en houdt van reggae.

“Ik zou absoluut niet naar Bounty Killer zijn gaan kijken, omdat hij muzikaal niet mijn ding is. Ik maak het onderscheid tussen ragga en reggae: de nieuwe stroming, ragga, is me muzikaal en tekstueel veel te agressief. Voor mij staat reggae voor vrede en verdraagzaamheid - wat helaas veel te weinig wordt belicht in de media.”

Ook hij neemt een gematigd standpunt in. “Ik ben tegen een Berufsverbot. Dat hij het pact heeft getekend waarin hij zich ertoe verbindt geen homofobe praat op een podium te spuien, vond ik voldoende. Maak je geen illusies: met dat soort houding worden artiesten in Jamaica wel superpopulair. Het is pas als ze in Europa of de VS optreden, dat dit niet wordt gepikt. En dan nog: als je concertorganisatoren erop wijst dat zo'n artiest een homohater is, is de eerste reactie gegarandeerd ‘ach, voor een paar homo's die zullen protesteren...’.”

Het bestuur van 5 voor 12 heeft het concert van reggaezanger Bounty Killer afgelast. De Jamaicaan staat bekend voor zijn homofobe lyrics. De Holebifederatie reageert tevreden.

Bounty Killer afgelast

Het bestuur van 5 voor 12 en Muziekclub Petrol heeft beslist om het as. zondag geplande concert van Bounty Killer niet te laten doorgaan.

Bounty Killer is 1 van de sterkhouders van de hedendaagse Jamaicaanse muziekscene en is o.m. door zijn crossover met hiphop 1 van de populairste reggae-artiesten van dit moment, wat ook de concrete aanleiding heeft gevormd om hem een plek te geven in het programma van Muziekclub Petrol. Zijn laatste concert in België dateerde van 2 jaar geleden.

In het verleden heeft Bounty Killer teksten gebracht die aanzetten tot geweld tegen homoseksuelen. Op onze uitdrukkelijke vraag kregen we de mondelinge én schriftelijke garantie dat hij geen gewelddadige of homofobe teksten zal vertolken. Anderzijds vonden ook wij na rijp beraad dat dit engagement niet volstaat omdat hij zich niet nadrukkelijk wenst te distantiëren van eerder gebrachte teksten en statements. Om wille hiervan hebben we beslist om dit optreden toch niet te laten doorgaan.

Het optreden kwam onder vuur te liggen vanuit de politiek en vanuit de homobeweging. N-VA-er Piet De Bruyn en schepen Philip Heylen protesteerden, maar ook de Holebifederatie had bezwaren.

Holebifederatie blij met afgelasting optreden Bounty Killer

De Jamaicaanse dancehall-artiest Bounty Killer zal dan toch niet optreden in de Antwerpse Club Petrol, zoals gepland was. Het concert is afgelast. De Holebifederatie reageert verheugd op het nieuws. Op het aangekondigde concert was heel wat reactie gekomen van de Holebifederatie en het Antwerpse stadsbestuur. Bounty Killer wordt al jarenlang internationaal bekritiseerd omwille van zijn liedteksten die aanzetten tot extreem geweld tegen homo's. De Holebifederatie is erg blij dat hij in ons land geen forum krijgt. Zolang een artiest zich niet expliciet distantieert van zijn uitspraken en consequent stopt met homofobe teksten te zingen, is er geen reden om hem op concerten te programmeren.

Bounty Killer spoort in zijn liedteksten aan om homo's te vermoorden. Na internationaal protest tegen haatdragende liedteksten, ondertekenden enkele van Bounty Killers collega's de 'Reggae Compassionate Act'. Hierin engageren ze zich om geen expliciet homofobe teksten meer te zingen. Bounty Killer heeft pertinent geweigerd om dit document te ondertekenen. Hij heeft nooit afstand willen nemen van de inhoud van zijn teksten.

"Zolang Bounty Killer zich niet van zijn haatdragende boodschappen distantieert, zou hij geweerd moeten worden op Belgische podia", zegt Yves Aerts. "Het consequent en herhaaldelijk oproepen tot moord en haat tegenover een bepaalde groep, is verboden."

De Holebifederatie vroeg de concertprogrammator deze week om uitleg. Die antwoordde dat er geen probleem is omdat Bounty Killer beloofd heeft om tijdens het concert van 30 maart geen homofobe teksten te zingen.

"Dat was een zeer dubbelzinnige houding" reageert Yves Aerts. "Bounty Killer zou in Antwerpen geen homofobe teksten zingen, omdat hij weet dat hij anders niet geprogrammeerd wordt. In andere landen gaat hij rustig voort met het verspreiden van haat. Zijn houding tegenover homo's verandert niet. De reactie van de programmator was oneerlijk en niet consequent. Waarom zou ons land een forum moeten geven aan iemand die opruiende taal hanteert en predikt dat homo's vermoord moeten worden? We zijn blij dat de organisator uiteindelijk beslist heeft dat het concert niet kan doorgaan."

Reggaezanger Bounty Killer (Rodney Basil Price) uit Jamaica concerteert op 30 maart in Club Petrol en dat zint openlijk homoseksuele Vlaams parlementslid Piet De Bruyn (N-VA) niet. Waarom? omdat Bounty Killer één van die reggaezangers is die homofobie prediken. De Bruyn schreef hierover Jozef De Witte van het Centrum voor Gelijkheid van Kansen en Racismebestrijding (CGKR) aan.

"Vrijheid van meningsuiting eindigt wanneer iemand zijn publiek oproept om homo's op te knopen. Zoals het ook onaanvaardbaar is wanneer een zanger zingt dat vrouwen gemolesteerd of joden vergast moeten worden. Veel van deze concerten vinden ook plaats in een gesubsidieerd circuit. Daar mogen voorwaarden aan verbonden zijn", stelt De Bruyn (Gazet van Antwerpen, 21.03.2008).

Maar Jozef De Witte van het CGKR heeft wat bedenkingen bij de klacht. "Als het gaat over aanzetten tot haat, geweld en discriminatie valt dit inderdaad onder onze bevoegdheid. Alleen ligt het vooraf toepassen van censuur moeilijk, en zou mijnheer De Bruyn best ook de politie contacteren. Die kan bij dit soort zaken zelfs zonder voorafgaande klacht optreden. Daarnaast zullen wij ook in overleg treden met de Holebifederatie, waar we goed mee samenwerken."

Concertorganisator Eric Smout van Club Petrol ziet het probleem niet. "Kijk op www.parkercom.de: daar staat een duidelijk statement van Bounty Killers boekingagent, dat hij op het podium geen gewelddadige of homofobe teksten bezigt. Ik heb de artiest geboekt voor zijn muziek, en wil hem er vooraf wel even op wijzen welke gevoeligheden hier bestaan, maar daar eindigt het. Die reggae-artiesten zijn zelf ook wel verstandige mensen, hoor. We vinden het bovendien bijzonder jammer dat Piet De Bruyn met ons geen contact heeft opgenomen. "

O alaturare deloc ciudata dupa ce in ultimii ani am ascultat tot felul de featuring-uri, unele mai reusite, altele… De la Fugees in `90 Wyclef a experimentat cat pentru o viata de om, sau cat pentru 20 de vieti de boysband. Serj este la fel de mistic si alternative ca intotdeauna. Dar cireasa de pe tort nu vine de la niciunul dinte ei.

Sizzla Charged For Ganga Possession

According to a recent publication in the Jamaica Observer popular dancehall singjay Miguel 'Sizzla' Collins had the future of his international career put in jeopardy after having a conviction for a drug-related offence recorded against his name when he appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Collins, who is responsible for reggae and dancehall hits such as Nah Apologise, Black Woman And Child, Rise To The Occasion and Solid As A Rock, was yesterday sentenced to pay a fine of J$100 or serve 10 days behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana.

Collins' ability to travel overseas may be jeopardised, however, after the presiding magistrate Glen Brown ordered that Collins be fingerprinted, which also signified that the conviction would be recorded on Collins' criminal record.

The court was yesterday told that on January 4, Collins was seen by police sitting in his car, which was parked along Windward Road in Kingston. The officers subsequently searched his car and found a small bag of the drug under a mat in the car. He was subsequently arrested and charged.

Collins has allegedly appeared in the Half- Way-Tree Court at least once before in connection with a drug-related offence.

Collins is, however, not the first reggae/dancehall artiste to be convicted on drug charges. In April 2004 Mark 'Buju Banton' Myrie was found guilty of possession of marijuana charge in 2004. Myrie was arrested and charged after police searched his studio in Red Hills, St Andrew and found three marijuana plants.

The BK MC, Mr. International, Passport Pimpin', CEO of Blacksmith, releases his latest and doesn't disappoint.

1. Everything Man

Spoken word poetry, when done right, touches your soul. It doesn't even have to rhyme, it could be all about the syllables and the delivery. A nice couple of verses are spit here by middle aged woman as the Madlib production creeps in every so gently. Kweli proclaims at the start "You can't please everybody..." (No shit, We'll forever be fiendin' Reflection Eternal 2) then he goes in, as only Kweli can. 5/5

2. NY Weather Report

Sweeping violins mixed with some good old boom bap. I would have liked those rubs in the chorus to sound a bit more vinyly. 3/5

3. Hostile Gospel (Pt. 1) (Deliver Us)

Two words, Just Blaze. I appreciate the artistry of this track. The choir opens the track up with some chilling flourishes before the beat drops. This is the type of Talib track that I like, honest observations mixed with some truthful uplifting rap. 5/5

4. Say Something (feat. Jean Grae)

I know what you're thinking, and the answer is Yes. Jean Grae is one of the greatest female MCs of all time. This track is 100% hip-hop battle rap. It's refreshing sometimes to hear people lyrically get down. will.i.am dodges my hate (If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hatin' (c) Common) because Jean and Talib absolutely flex their lyrical muscle all over the track. 4/5

5. Country Cousins (Feat. UGK & Raheem Devaughn)

Sounds like a family reunion on the weekend, BBQ going, kids running around playing tag in the backyard, dominos in full effect, sun shining. When I first heard ABOUT this track I was skeptical about the pairing. After hearing this track I can't believe I thought that. 4/5

6. Holy Moly

Another two words: Pete Rock. Holy Moly is right. Some producers can bring the best out of artists. My head started nodding when the beat dropped. Only thing I didn't like was it's only one verse. 4/5

7. Eat To Live

People often forget that Talib is also a very good storyteller. I appreciate that he speaks to the youth. Another smooth soulful Madlib production. 3/5

8. In The Mood (feat. Kanye West & Roy Avers)

This is my favourite track on the album. Partly because of my Kanye bias. But also because this is WAY better than "Never Been In Love" lyrically. (Cabbie, you're a damn fool in the intro of that vid.) Nice lounge-type beat, 'Ye drops an hilarious 16. 5/5

9. Soon The New Day (Feat. Nora Jones)

Second Favourite track of the album. Nora Jones' voice is just so syrupy and soothing. I'd equate this track to a summer time rain storm that you'd sit on the porch and just watch when you were a little kid, it's almost hypnotizing. 5/5

10. Give 'Em Hell (feat. Coi Mattison & Lyfe Jennings)

You can also see a different version this song here. I actually prefer that version. 3/5

11. More or Less (feat. Dion)

First single. (or was it Listen!!!?) Boom Bap. Of course it's Reflection Eternal. And if you didn't understand what I just said. I guess you aren't really a Kweli fan are ya? 5/5

12. Stay Around

That's Kool And The Gang right? I have that on vinyl. Pete Rock again. I don't know how I feel about that chorus. That muted horn just chillin in the background is crazy though. 4/5

13. Hot Thing (feat. will.i.am)

The Newest (Third? Second?) single. This was another favourite of mine on the album that stayed on repeat for a while. Another good but certainly not great will.i.am production and guest spot. "The white voice when you're handlin' business..." THAT'S REAL TALK. 4/5

14. Space Fruit Interlude (Feat. Sa-Ra)

If you're not up on Sa-Ra, GET YOUR LATE PASS. They're the future. Hopefully after Graduation drops, Kanye puts some dollars behind them. 4/5

15. The Perfect Beat (feat. KRS-One)

They didn't find it here. All praises due to the Teacha, he came and blessed. But just felt like filler from the get-go. 2/5

16. Oh My Stars (feat. Musiq Soulchild)

It kinda cheeses me that those kids spit that at the start, and that 16 was better than 80% of the shit out right now. Musiq throws down. He's definitely a talented cat. That coolout bass is sparkling and refreshing. 4/5

17. Listen!!!

This track will always remind me of NBA Live '07 (You don't want this in the Dunk off TRUST ME.) Fun Fact: This track was out almost a year ago. 3/5

18. Go With Us (Feat. Strong Arm Steady) (BONUS)

More like, Strong Arm Steady featuring Talib Kweli. And I mean, I understand their on your label. But I didn't like Strong Arm Steady before. I still don't like Strong Arm Steady after this. 1/5

19. Hostile Gospile (pt. 2) (Feat. Sizzla) (BONUS)

This beat knocks. Sizzla does an OK job here. My head still nods which must mean something was done right here. 4/5

20. The Nature (Feat. Justin Timberlake) (BONUS)

If Warner Brothers is cutting that check, this would be the next single up to bat. This is an amazing song and another one of my favourites out of the album cuts. Talib needs more things like this to help the masses consume his messages. Sometimes a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, and in this case it works just fine. 5/5

RECAP: The BK MC is getting his grown man rap on, doing it better than most, and running his new label too. The Beautiful Struggle lacked the cohesiveness. Liberation was a sign that times are changing for the better. And Eardrum is a refreshing album, filled with all sorts of topics and tempos. To the point that I loafted on writing this review up for an entire week because I was enjoying this album that much. It still suffered a bit at a lengthy 20 tracks deep; the filler tracks stood out like a soar thumb. Yet I was so pleased that I actually went out and bought this in the store. And it's arguably the best solo effort from him to date.

Hypocrisy on cruelty, and the album

Just a quick link today, Diane. ESPN Page 2's Gregg Easterbrook (a.k.a. Tuesday Morning Quarterback) is an interesting fellow. He is an avowed Christian but loves science. He writes about football for a living but he also likes to devote column inches to explaining plot holes in "Star Trek" episodes. And he works for what is basically a conservative medium (sports media), but interrupted his column today with this thoughtful breakdown of the hypocrisy in the public reaction to Michael Vick's indictment and plea agreement. Don't read the football parts if you don't want to, but do treat yourself to an intelligent omnivore making a pretty good argument for vegetarianism (or something closer to it than not, anyway). You have to scroll down to the section titled "Atlanta Falcons." Or just look for the picture of the hot, bosomy cheerleader. Whoever said that huge bosoms and vegeterianism didn't go hand in hand?

Redirecting the creative juices

I apologize for not keeping you as informed and entertained as usual this week, but my creativity muscle (it's in the lumbar area) has been flexing in other ways. Mainly I've been working on a new idea I had, which is to mix dancehall acapella tracks (i.e. just the singing part of the song) with music custom-assembled by me from spaghetti western soundtracks. Dancehall artistes have had a well-known and long-lasting fixation on westerns, so the combination seems like a good one to me - at least on paper it does. We'll have to see how it goes when the team takes the field. But if I can somehow honor the legacy of the Supercat-led group album "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly & The Crazy" - not to mention the toasting efforts of reggae DJs Clint Eastwood and Josey Wales - then I will have done what I set out to do.

Since I'm low on creative wattage at the moment, I'll just fill some space with a low-creativity blog post. Namely,

HERE'S SOME OF THE GREATEST DANCEHALL AND SPAGHETTI WESTERN TRACKS, LISTED ALPHABETICALLY

(Slick, aren't I.)

~ "Batty Rider" by Buju Banton. With a goofy keyboard loop and a kind of annoying sample of a guy saying "Big it up!" over and over, you'd think this song would be a big fat miss. But Buju lays on one of his best, most infectious hooks ever. No song about short shorts will ever rival the greatness of this one. Click on track 2 here if you want to hear a bit of it.

~ "The Ecstacy of Gold" from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly by Ennio Morricone. This is darn close to the definitive spaghetti western song; I honestly can't listen to it without getting chills. The spectral wailings of the female singer alongside the swooning strings and defiant brass gets me every time. I also can't listen to it without picturing Tuco (Eli Wallach) running circles in that cemetery, looking desperately for treasure he doesn't deserve - but which by the slightly cruel generosity of The Man With No Name will soon be his anyway. A classic piece of scoring and a timeless scene. It's track 20 here if you feel inclined.

~ "Fedup" by Bounty Killer. This is a HUGE dancehall anthem. It had to overcome a few obstacles to get there though. The beat is somewhat generic except for an occasional interjection where the kick drum pounds right on the beat four times in a row. There's an odd sample that is not quite on rhythm (riddim?) and sounds kind of like a guitar crossed with a steel drum, pitch-shifted down an octave. And there's the fact that Bounty's main melody is lifted right from Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner." But when the Killa gets to the hook and bellows "Poor people FED UP!" you know what the fuck is up. And what is up is this, Diane: this tune is kicking your ass. Enjoy the Tom's Diner-ness here (track 1).

~ "Il Grande Silenzio" from The Great Silence by Ennio Morricone. This is a tremendously sad little bit of folksy scoring that precedes one of the bleakest, coldest westerns ever made. Spoiler: When the title character meets his demise at the hands of superfreak Klaus Kinski at the end, this song by the maestro is what makes it not particularly surprising. Goodbye, Silence; hello, beautiful soundtrack that transports me to a much sadder place.

~ "Killa Is A Killa" by Bounty Killer. He says he'll execute your family, and it sounds like he means it. This is probably one of Killer's finest tracks in terms of pure delivery. His voice had reached a deep resonance, aged like a fine wine after years of chatting, but he had also just recently started inserting these bizarre modulated bits (e.g. "Hey yo! Yallo!") that are awesome and funny at the same time. With a solid, stripped-down riddim behind him, Bounty can't miss on this one. Track 3 here.

~ "Main Theme 1" from Indio Black by Bruno Nicolai. As solid a Morricone pastiche as you'll ever hear, with catchy chants of the title character's name, horse-gallop rhythms, a soaring theme for trumpet, and flute shenanigans right out of the "Fistful of Dollars" playbook.

~ "Parte Prima" from The Grand Duel by Luis Bacalov. I'm kind of glad that this song is too slow to make a good dancehall track, because otherwise I'd certainly use it, and everyone would think I was sampling the "Kill Bill" soundtrack. And with all due respect to Uma, she'll never hold the same esteem in my heart as Lee Van Cleef. Anyway, this song is one of the defining musical cues in "Kill Bill," and it's a lovely, melancholy thing with an almost chaotic amount of emotion in it. God, I miss big ol' melodramatic scores. Here it is if you want to refresh your memory - track 3 on the "Kill Bill" CD (the original soundtrack is utterly MIA).

~ "Step Out" by Busy Signal. This song has a hyper riddim (as is pretty common nowadays - the dancehall is speeding things up every year) and delivery to match from newcomer Busy Signal. But the true awesomeness arrives in the eerie chorus where he croons in slow motion: "Wuk gal/Buss guns/Smoke weed/Have fun" - and then tops it off with an energetic "Wah mi do!" Yeah, me too, Busy. ~ "Titoli Di Testa" from The Big Gundown by Ennio Morricone. The instrumental version of the theme - a defiant, rousing piece of work with blazing trumpets and ghostly feminine crooning - just beats out the vocal version ("Corri, Uomo, Corri") because it lets you imagine rather than be confronted with the impressive but weird singing of these lyrics: "Go ahead young man! Reach toward the sun! Run man while you can! Run man, run man, run!" Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be humming that all afternoon.

~ "To The Point" by Sizzla. All I can say about this song is "HEY HEY HEY HEY Sizzla Kalonji say fi unno love one anothah! HEY HEY HEY HEY Sizzla Kalonji say hot hotta fyah!" Track 7.

~ "Two Mules For Sister Sara: Main Title" from the film of the same title by Ennio Morricone. This slightly edges out the very similar discordant guitar title music Morricone used in "Death Rides A Horse" and "Face to Face." It benefits from not being as fast as the latter, or as jangly and chaotic as either. But mostly it benefits from that wonderfully off-kilter flute bit that comes in around the two minute mark. This movie pales in comparison to the two I just mentioned, but the theme is great stuff. It's track 1 here.

~ "Wrath" by Sizzla. It's baffling to me that this tune hasn't appeared on a Sizzla album yet. Scratch that; it's baffling to me that this tune hasn't appeared on every Sizzla album, ever. Even his old ones should be reissued with this song leading off. For one thing, the riddim is enormous... elephantine, even. It's fast and driving with a kind of evil minor key melody, and these funny, squeaky percussive noises marking the end of every measure. And then Sizzla just erupts: "Gangsta nuh left dem gun an mi run it!" Yessir, I won't dispute it.
