Paying providers of health care to refer

Pay-for-Performance Gets Doctors to Push Smoking Cessation

Paying providers of health care to refer patients for help in quitting smoking really makes a difference.

A study, appearing in the current issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at programs that tie physician pay to the quality of care. The key measure was clinics’ referrals of patients in Minnesota to a tobacco quit line. Researchers compared clinics that were paid bonuses for making such referrals — $5,000 for 50 referrals and $25 for each referral beyond the initial 50 — to clinics that didn’t have a financial incentive.

It turned out that the clinics that were in the pay-for-performance program made 1,483 referrals to the quit line, an average of 11.4% of their patients who were smokers. Those that didn’t have the chance to earn extra money made 441 referrals, an average of 4.2% of their smokers.

The researchers, led by Lawrence An of the University of Minnesota, noted some important factors for success beyond cold cash. For one, Minnesota health plans collaborated to make the referral process easy for the clinics. The clinics were also rewarded regardless of what health plan their patients belonged to, meaning that they could make the same recommendation to all smokers.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, which funded the study and payments to the clinics with money from a tobacco settlement, decided along with a number of other Minnesota health plans to continue with the program around smoking cessation, albeit with lower financial awards, a spokeswoman tells us.

One important note is that Smoke Away, though they care about you using their product, also would suggest doing whatever you can in order to quit smoking. For more information, log onto the Smoke Away support site to talk with people who have quit with our product.

It started about 25 years ago. I am almost 40 now. A seemingly innocent experiment to see how many cigarettes would I have to smoke before I could inhale without choking almost to death. You might think my body's initial rejection of this thing called smoking would have shut the habit down immediately. Nope...I am still at it. Very committed. I am slaving over it as I type this note.

Especially lately, I make myself sick. Each night, before I go to bed, I rehearse how my next morning will start--as a non-smoker. Each morning when I wake, I wander to the garage and light up as if I were sleepwalking. I make my self sick. Really.

Truthfully, I have never put in an honest attempt at quitting. After all, I am invincible right? As I struggle to take a breath after walking a single flight of stairs. I make myself sick.

I have read the research. I have seen the long slow death that results from smoking. I have also done the math. If I would have invested the same amount of money into my future instead of my death I would clearly be better off on many levels. I make myself sick.

So, I am attempting to take on a new approach to being a non-smoker. I am going to talk about it. A little bit every day. My written self-reminder to stop my slow suicide.

STOP SMOKING.

The global economy is in a free fall. It is the Tower of Babel knocked over by the hand of God. How did we get here? We are here because we rejected God’s law and God’s order to embrace the Society of Satan. We rejected God’s law over politics, war and economics because we, with Adam and Eve, want to be like God, to determine good and evil for ourselves. We didn’t want God to tell us that our laws were evil, our banking system was evil, preemptive strike warfare is evil, the United Nations and NATO are evil. After all, what does God know? We have our own gods now in Washington DC and New York. They predestine our future for us so God can go back to sleep, except God isn’t asleep.

Just like Adam and Eve in the garden, politicians like Barney Frank and others are evading responsibility for the economic crisis. They blame the markets and not their own “divine” regulations which is the real cause. When you see yourself as a god, how can you fail? There is no right and wrong for a god. They are above that.

The central planners bear no risk for their decisions and poor planning. Alan Greenspan is not being punished for inflating us into these bubbles. Jimmy Carter’s home is not being taken away for forcing the banks to lend to unqualified, credit shaky people because to do so was claimed to be racism. McCain, Obama, Clintons, Bush, Frank, Dodd, Pelosi, Wall Street CEO’s who jumped with multi-million dollar parachutes, none of these are paying the price, yet. Eventually, they will face God’s judgment, either in this life or the one to come.

Genesis 11:4 And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower whose top reaches into the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the whole earth.

5And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.

6And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have [a]all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.

7Come, let Us go down and there confound (mix up, confuse) their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

8So the Lord scattered them abroad from that place upon the face of the whole earth, and they gave up building the city.

9Therefore the name of it was called Babel--because there the Lord confounded the language of all the earth; and from that place the Lord scattered them abroad upon the face of the whole earth. (The Amplified Bible)

“Men may deny God’s sovereignty, but they cannot stop believing in sovereignty; they merely transfer it to man or the State. Total law and planning, i.e., predestination, is inescapable; denied to God, it is simply transferred to the scientific socialist State, which predestines or totally governs and plans all things. If deity be denied to the God of Scripture, it merely reappears in man or the State. And if the Church ceases proclaiming the Gospel, then religion does not perish; it reappears as politics or economics, and salvation continues to be offered to inescapably religious man.” R. J. Rushdoony, Genesis, p. 103

We live in a society that has become increasingly satanic as the secular State plans our lives for us from cradle to grave. The State seeks to predestine and control every aspect to what foods we are allowed to eat (FDA), communications (FCC and eavesdropped by NSA), education, welfare, taxation, medicine, economy, employment, foreign aid, and much more. This is a manifestation of the Tower of Babel.

America, since Lincoln, has become Babylon. Lincoln ended the old covenant form of federal government that was subject to Biblical law and replaced it with a centralized, socialist government and the end of freedom. Babylon is the society of Satan. Its foundation is sand, man’s fiat word. In fact, as the stock market is proof of, it is quicksand.

Matthew 7: 24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25"And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.

26"Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

27"The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall." (The New American Standard Version)

Fractional reserve banking is rooted in witchcraft alchemists who attempted to design a potion that would turn ordinary base metals into gold; in essence, something for nothing. Our banking and economic systems are religious systems, but anti-Christ to the core. It’s foundation is theft. Steal from one group of people, the producers, and give to another group, the politically connected wasters and non-producers.

The national government stole you money and gave it to the bankers. They lied and told you this was to help you. It won’t. it was to help them. You and I have been defrauded. “Although those who hunger for power are small in numbers, it’s easy to entice the masses into believing that government can provide for everyone’s needs and safety.” (Ron Paul, the Freedom Report, Sept. 2008)

The bailout was for losers, the non-producers. Lehman Brothers became a non-producer; so did Wachovia, Indy Mac Bank and AIG. The Federal Reserve Bank and the national government swindled the American people to keep many of the losers afloat. Socialism is a system of losers because Babylon is a false religion that will always experience God’s judgment.

The Tower of Babel is religious. It is the worship of the State or statism. It believes in ad hoc law or rule, created at the moment to fit the situation without the restraint of eternal law. It manifests with a proliferation of imperialistic bureaucracies and bureaucrats. It believes in the divinity of the central planners and that salvation is primarily political. This is true of all tyrannies that receive popular support.

The people want their messiah to fix their problems by a fiat word. They want a divine State because they have no faith in a Creator God and reject His law. The people have looked to kings, Caesars, parliaments, councils, Lenin, Stalin and Hitler to give them political and economic salvation. God decapitalized them all. In the U. S., we have deified Lincoln, John Kennedy and now Barak Obama is offered as a political savior.

What these men and their political orders have in common is a hatred for God’s law and His Kingdom. Their supporters reject personal responsibility. They and their supporters want to eat even if they don’t work. They don’t want to be responsible to save and invest wisely for their retirement, so they choose a political order that promises Social Security, Medicare, and now pay for their drugs as well. Saving for prosperity is difficult. They want to spend themselves to prosperity. Like the alchemists, they want economic magic.

Now that the Tower of Babel is falling on Wall Street, investors are shaken in their faith in Babylon. The same old plan of injecting fiat currency and more debt into the system did not bring the stock market up again as the central planners had envisioned. Instead, it experienced a historic drop. Plus, the majority of Americans did not support the bailout.

It doesn’t matter though because Bush, the Republican, and Democrat leaders coerced Congress to pass it and ignore their constituents back home. Faith in Babylon is dying. We must once and for all reject the idea that the elite few are capable to magically create safety and prosperity for the masses. That is socialism and it has always failed in history.

Yesterday, October 13, 2008, the stock market experienced another historic event; a surge of 936 for the Dow. This follows a pattern similar to that of the Great Depression. There will be ups and downs but essentially, the slave economy of socialism is collapsing just as the Berlin Wall fell. We need to rebuild the economy and all of life upon a foundation of God’s law that prohibits theft, even theft by a majority vote.

This nation prospered because it was founded by Christians who subjected all of their lives, private and public, to God’s law. Andrew Jackson stated that, “The Bible is the rock upon which the Republic rests.” If we are to recapitalize our economy, we must repent of our national sins and return to that rock.

John 19:12As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, "If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar."

13Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!"

15So they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." (The New American Version)

God has brought judgment to the Tower of Babel. What will the nations choose as their substitute; the City of God or a new tower? America is about to choose a new president, but the real question is, who will America choose as king and who’s law will America follow, Jesus Christ or the Babylonians? To continue to choose Keynesian, socialist economics is to reject Christ and His claim over us.

Will we choose to repent, return to God’s law and hold our elected officials accountable to God’s law, or will we trust the State to be divine and create ad hoc regulations that will strangle the economy even more so we will reap even greater destruction and judgment?

Smoking is one hard habit to break. If nicotine patches and gum doesn’t work, perhaps you should try something else like an alternative form of healthcare like acupuncture.

Acupuncture is an ancient practice involving the use of needles. This instrument is inserted into the skin to allow you energy or Qi to start flowing freely around your body and thus help you quit smoking.

When you go visit an acupuncturist for the first time and tell him or her that you want to quit smoking, after answering some questions, the specialist will carry out an examination of your ears and search for areas where the energy is low.

Once these spots are identified, these sharp needles are then inserted. Usually 5 needles are placed in various acupoints.

The treatment is finished after an hour and when the needles are removed, you are advised to wear ear magnets so your session continues even when you leave the clinic. While acupuncture itself is a painless procedure, some smokers have claimed that they felt a prick or get sleepy.

Most smokers will have to come to the clinic 4 to 6 times before seeing any significant results. Just to give you an idea, one study shows that the respondents reported a decrease in the number of cravings to smoke just after one or two sessions. Seven out of 10 of the respondents were able to kick the habit after 5 or 6 sessions.

Because the number of test subjects is small, there are some who doubt the effectiveness of acupuncture. This is because although there are positive signs with regards to the short term effects of this technique, its effects were not sustained. This is why some medical journals have stated that it is unclear what acupuncture can do in smoking cessation.

But you have to remember that acupuncture is not permanent. It merely starts something that you have to finish on your own. Some smokers who go 2 or 3 times a week to the clinic will need to come back for follow up sessions in the future.

At the same time, you have to find ways to prevent yourself from picking up a cigarette. You can do this by staying away from people who smoke since you will be tempted to ask for a stick. You can create your own personal mantra which you repeat to yourself every time you have an urge.

Remember that this craving is only short term and will last only for a few minutes. You have worked so hard to leave this behind so stick to the path and stay smoke free.

Acupuncture treatment for smokers should only be done by a license professional. You can do some research online to find out if they are accredited by the National Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, ask how long they have been in the profession, find out how many smokers they have helped and how much will they charge.

Once you have found one, you have to commit yourself to the program because both you and the acupuncturist have to work together to give up this habit.

Acupuncture can help smokers in the same way that it has helped addicts and alcoholics quit their addictions. You just have to try it even if you may not believe in it.

I don’t remember how I stumbled on to EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), but it was sometime

I don't remember how I stumbled on to EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), but it was sometime this past summer. Perhaps I was searching with the keywords "subliminal programming" or "mental training". I clicked on the www.emofree.com link where I found a free manual, introductory video, and a host of inspirational articles. It was amazing that the site I happened to wander into was hosted by the founder of EFT, Gary Craig. After scanning through what I could, I decided to research this more. I mean, it was non-invasive and something I could practice on myself.

It was around this time I met Karen Nauman, an EFT and Law of Attraction Coach,
Certified Hypnotherapist - EFT Practitioner. There I was, stumbling into sites from www.emofree.com, when arrived at Karen's www.tapintoeft.com. At a time when I wasn't clear how EFT was working for me, I read her article "I Did the EFT Personal Peace Procedure... BUT Negative Feelings Returned! What's Up?". It really encouraged me to keep tapping and be opened to the time effectiveness of this simple procedure. I wanted to know how I may use EFT in my work, to go into meditation faster and help improve my eyesight, so I contacted Karen to take advantage of her free 20-minute consultation.

Karen was prompt and personable; soon we scheduled a time to confer. It was such a privilege to speak with her. She was empathetic and comprehensible, offering me a plethora of references and suggestions. It had to have been one of the top 5 best initial consultations I've ever had. I believed in the effects of EFT, but after our discussion, I felt more confident and relaxed on how to apply it. I got that much closer to just being with things and that much further from depending on perfection.

Since practicing EFT, I've been feeling more in control by no effort, no force. I have not smoked in about 3 weeks. Before then, I was thinking about why I was smoking in the first place, free from judgment and justification. I noticed I was slowing down, not making special trips to buy a pack of cigarettes and going days without smoking. The anxiety I've gotten use to experiencing became more noticeable and I started tapping on that. Having better understandings of focus and concentration flows freely to me more readily now. Opportunities I may have ignored before; I am willing to explore, no matter the level of fear I may be feeling. Through tapping, I feel okay about being afraid and get that I can work through my way to feeling better.

There has been other influence which supports the direction I am traveling, but EFT is something I actually practice most days. I love the handy scripts on Karen's site and have used them to help anchor me in utilizing EFT more efficiently in composing my own scripts. I've found her newsletters to be perceptive and supportive. As I continue to release the practice of self-criticism and feelings of guilt, I enjoy the benefits of EFT to help tap into the true essence of being me.

I have just finished the design, including the logo, for a new ecommerce website CertainWords.co.uk. They offer hypnosis CDs to help people stop smoking, and will be adding more CDs as they become available. They also provide businesses with a way to help their staff stop smoking. The NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines now apparently state that businesses should be assisting their smoking staff to stop.

Anyway here is a look at my latest design. They have some really interesting figures on how much smoking really costs you, it's surprising, maybe worth a visit.

Why it is a Challenge to Stop Smoking: Symptoms of Nicotine Withdrawal

Nicotine is a potentially addictive chemical that people often become dependent on through smoking c

Nicotine is a potentially addictive chemical that people often become dependent on through smoking cigarettes. In some studies, it has been found that nicotine can be as addictive as cocaine, and because there are so many health issues related to smoking, it can be just as dangerous to become dependent on. If you have tried to quit smoking in the past, and have been unable to succeed, it is probably because when you stop smoking, the symptoms are extremely uncomfortable and nearly impossible for some to live with. This is because of the effects of nicotine withdrawal on your body. However, if you continue to smoke, the damage that is done to your body will be much greater than the discomfort that is caused by nicotine withdrawal.

Stop Smoking: Symptoms can be Managed

There are many potential symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, and these symptoms can make it very challenging for a smoker to give up cigarettes permanently. It can be easier to stop smoking if the symptoms are known ahead of time, so that you can prepare properly for what is to come. When you attempt to stop smoking, the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal will become quite apparent. First, you will probably be unable to stop on your own without some sort of assistance. Perhaps you have tried to quit on more than one occasion, but you always find yourself heading back to the cigarettes. This inability to stop smoking can be a symptom of nicotine dependence.

Another symptom can encompass an entire host of physical effects of nicotine withdrawal. These can include a headache, nausea, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, depression, and gastrointestinal upset. You can also suffer from an increase in hunger, which is why many folks who try to stop smoking end up gaining weight. You may experience tobacco cravings, and these can become quite intense and difficult to fight. When you try to stop smoking, symptoms like these become quite common, and are why many return to the cigarettes. There are some aids that can be used to help curb some of these unpleasant symptoms.

If you want to stop smoking, and the symptoms that you experience are keeping you from success, talk to your doctor about things that you can do to make the process a little bit easier. Smoking is not a healthy habit, and there are many things you can do to get off of the cigarettes once and for all.

Also called: Cigar smoking, Cigarette smoking, Pipe smoking, Tobacco smoking

There’s no way around it. Smoking is bad for your health. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body. Cigarette smoking causes 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. It is also responsible for many other cancers and health problems. These include lung disease, heart and blood vessel disease, stroke and cataracts. Women who smoke have a greater chance of certain pregnancy problems or having a baby die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Your smoke is also bad for other people - they breathe in your smoke secondhand and can get many of the same problems as smokers do.

Quitting smoking can reduce your risk of these problems. The earlier you quit, the greater the health benefit.

Smoking not only makes you get cancer, heart diseases etc., it also makes you look older than you are by developing facial wrinkles. Research studies found that smokers in their 30s look older than the nonsmokers in their 50s, due to facial wrinkles.

Research findings proved that those who had smoked for ten years or more, get ‘smoker’s face’. The characteristics of a smoker’s face are he or she looks older than what actually is. Roughly half of the smokers are found having ‘smoker’s face’ irrespective of age, social class, and estimated lifetime consumption of cigarettes.

How Smoking Causes Aging?

Smoking can accelerate the normal aging process of skin and cause wrinkles. These skin changes occur only after ten years of smoking and are irreversible.

Smoking causes narrowing of the blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin. This hindrances blood flow to skin and depletes it of oxygen and important nutrients.

Smoking also damages elastin and collagen, the fibers that give strength and elasticity to your skin. This causes your skin to sag and wrinkle prematurely.

Repeated exposure to the heat that comes from burning cigarettes and the facial expressions you make like pursing your lips when inhaling may also contribute to wrinkles.

Smoking also causes premature thinning and graying of the hair.

It is found that smokers are twice as likely to become bald like non-smokers.

Premature graying is also more common in smokers.

Smoking one cigarette decreases the caliber of blood vessels for up to 90 minutes.

The skin of a typical pack-a-day smoker deprives of normal flow of oxygen for most of each day.

How to quit smoking?

If you leave smoking, you not only look younger, also get numerous health benefits. Here are the best and easy ways and methods to stop smoking and live healthy.

New and modern techniques for smoking cessation like - quit smoking drugs, quit smoking herbs, hypnosis and counseling methods - increase your chances of success in quitting smoking.

Munch on sugarless gum, lollipops and raw vegetables.

Try to hold on to a pencil to keep resist the temptation to have cigarette in your hands.

Drink lots of water and fruit juice using a straw. It can satisfy your urge to hold a cigarette in mouth.

Stress and tension are the main reasons for smoking. Any activity that relieves you from these like walking, sports, and aerobics help you stop smoking habit.

Change your habits related to smoking. Take meals in a different place or in the non-smoking section, study in a library or another smoke-free place.

If you feel the urge to taste a cigarette, take some deep breaths of fresh air and hold it in for a few seconds.

Build up a support group with your smoking friends who plan to quit smoking. They give you the needed motivation to quit smoking.

Save the money you would have spent on smoking, and at the end of the month gift yourself something special with that money.

Another site my daughter and I have is a site dedicated to helping people break the smoking habit. I had the opportunity to share this information with a friend who simply couldn't stop smoking. She called me and asked if I had any ideas for breaking this chain and happily I was instrumental in helping her. Below is a letter of thanks that she wrote after she was free of nicotine. I asked her permission to publish her letter on my blog and she graciously granted it. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ the Bible teaches that your body is a Temple of God, and should be respected as such.

Dear Dewey

After we spoke on the phone I decided to try one of the programs on your site "the stop smoking source". As you know, I had heard of people that have tried hypnosis and were unsuccessful. Knowing this made me skeptical so I called a local hypnotist that a friend of mine knew. This local practitioner told me there is no "one size fits all" hypnotic method but that it does work with the vast majority of people.

So I decided to take the plunge and try hypnosis. After all I had been spending a small fortune on cigarettes. I went to your stop smoking site and ordered the Akualani method. Since the SINGLE SESSION, I have neither craved physically or mentally for a cigarette - I haven't smoked in 45 days. I was amazed, Wow! One of the key mental preps is acknowledging the act of "STOPPING" not "QUITTING". Quitting is for losers and that is why I couldn't stay away from cigarettes. To simply stop is to return to your original state as a non-smoker. Remember, choosing to become a smoker was a conscious variation on your life.

Since stopping smoking I have had the opportunity to share my experience with so many other smokers and many of them have also tried one of your hypnosis programs successfully. I just wanted to say a heartfelt thanks for your encouragement, I did it! Thanks again

Rachel J.

If you need help breaking this terrible addiction, take a look at our site. We have several recommendations of programs, one is bound to be right for you.

What if you hate puff but after some years of marriage you come to know that your wife smokes? Addiction to smoking almost cost a young woman her two-year-old marriage. The woman's husband, a non-smoker, has brought his errant wife back from her parental home on the condition that she must not smoke again.

The smell of cigarette smoke emanating from different corners of the house regularly after their son's marriage disturbed and surprised his parents as no one else in the household smoked. The matter got worse when she was caught red handed and the husband left her wife at her parent’s home refusing to accept her until she quits the deadly habit.

Yielding to her entreaties and believing her words that a proper de-addiction treatment has rid her of the habit, the husband has accepted her back. The woman has pledged to accept divorce without seeking alimony should she start smoking again.

Such cases are rare but smoking should be avoided as it is a very unhealthy addiction. Chantix is a wonderful drug for patients who are eager to quit smoking.

Have you ever wondered how hypnosis works? Let’s go over a few things it is not first. It’s not a trance, it’s not going to sleep, and it’s not being under someone else’s control.

When someone is under hypnosis, that person is actually completely aware of his or her environment, and is in control of his or her actions at all time. In fact, he or she is awake - just as awake as when you are in a really good movie that has all of your attention and 30 minutes has passed without even wondering the time, or when you’re driving a long stretch of highway and suddenly realize you have gone 20 miles and not even been aware of your surroundings.

So what does happen during hypnosis? Scott Adams (yes, the Dilbert creator, Scott Adams) has this to say about hypnosis.

“I describe the state of hypnosis as acquiring a power. The subject has all of his regular faculties operating plus he gains some more, if he has no objection to those new powers. For example, a subject under hypnosis would get a little extra power in one or more of these areas:

1. Extra relaxation
2. Extra imagination
3. Extra focus

Those extra powers don’t sound like much, but they are. In my experience, every person can be hypnotized, at least to the degree of getting some of those extra powers. People who say they can’t be hypnotized don’t understand hypnosis.

About one person in five can experience what hypnotists call “the phenomena.” For those people, their powers of imagination become so strong it is almost indistinguishable from reality. Those are the people who can give birth without pain, or see an elephant in the room, or eat an onion and think it’s an orange, or have multiple orgasms on suggestion. My name for that group is “lucky bastards.” For them, hypnosis can fix a lot of problems.

For the rest of the world, hypnosis can be a great way to relax, which has lots of health benefits. And it can help focus on good habits and away from bad ones.”

We’ll approach specific uses of hypnosis in days to come. In the meantime, if you’re interested in hypnosis, contact us at www.oc-hypnosis.com or by phone 949-215-0955.

Female smokers – women who are likely to smoke 20 or more cigarettes in a day are twice more likely to develop diagnosable depression than non smokers. A study involving 671 healthy women found that 15 per cent of smokers went on to develop depression, compared to 6.5 per cent of non smokers.

This clearly signifies the fact that non smokers are at lower risk for developing major depressive disorder, suggesting that smoking may play a role in the development of the disease in women.

The effect of smoking extends beyond physical ills like cancer and heart disease.

Yesterday we concentrated on the first verse only. There is so much in Roman's that I hesitate to rush. However today let's cover verses two through nine of chapter 1.

Verse 2: . . .promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures.

Last night as I was preparing for this study, the words Red Thread kept coming to my mind. If you read the cult writings of other religions, there is no flow to them, no central theme present, no goal that finishes off the quest. But the Bible is filled from Genesis to Revelation with the RED THREAD-the promise of Christ. This verse sets the premise for the rest of Romans.

Dorothy followed the yellow brick road, we follow the RED THREAD.

If you want a great picture of this thread read the story of Jericho and Rahab in Joshua 2: 15-21. The spies told her to hang a scarlet cord out her window, when the army saw it, they would know she was under the protection of God, and her life and her family's life, and anyone else who was under that roof, were to be spared. Back in Exodus, those whose doors were smeared with the blood of the lamb would escape when the death angel flew over Egypt. We, who are under the blood of Christ, are free from judgement for sin.

So all through Scripture we see the promise of Christ, and then we see the promise fulfilled.

Verse 3:

God's son was born of human flesh, descendents of David. Without the virgin birth and the resurrection there is no Savior. It's that simple. The virgin birth teaches that Christ was placed in the womb of Mary Luke 1:31, (No woman conceives in her womb) and that both Mary and Joseph were descendants of David. The promise was given (Matthew 1:1) is the lineage of Joseph, and Luke 3: 23_ are the genealogy of Mary. Legally, Joseph gave him the status of David's descendant, but by birth, Mary gave him the physical descendancy of David. Galatians says that in the fullness of time, Christ was born of a woman-Joseph never claimed to be the father of Christ. In fact, people called him Mary's son-or a bastard.

Verse 4:

The resurrection declares him the Son of God by power and the spirit of holiness. You and I are sinners from birth. Christ was holy from the get-go as God in human flesh. You and I will die, our lives taken from us by God through whatever means he has ordained. Christ gave up his life. He told the Jews, "no man takes my life from me, I will lay it down of my own free will and I will take it up as well". We can't make that statement.

Verse 5:

It is through these events that Paul's apostleship comes about. He has received this grace and apostleship to bring about obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake.

Verse 6:

The Roman church was predominantly Gentile, and Paul's ministry was predominantly to the Gentiles-"Among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ."

Verse 7:

To all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints (holy ones). Grace to you and peace. Grace always comes first for without grace in the form of Jesus Christ and his saving death and power there cannot be peace.

Verse 8

First-this church is proclaiming the gospel so well, that the whole world is hearing about it. (The populated world that Paul moves in) Paul is so grateful to God for each member of this sterling congregation. Have you ever been proud of a group of people you've not met face to face? When we read missionary stories, or stories of how well other churches are doing, don't we rejoice? We should, these are family successes.

Verse 9

Paul says that he serves God in his spirit. What does that mean? Remember the story of Christ and the woman at the well in John 4? He told her that those who worshipped God truly worship in spirit and truth. We are saved in our spirits, that's the living part of us that's eternal. Our bodies will perish, but our spirits are stamped with the imagery of God and are eternal.

Some translators say, "I worship with all of my heart." It conveys the idea that Paul has given himself over to God on every conscious level of his being. Before his conversion, Paul operated in his own flesh, doing things his way, in the best way he thought they should be done. He did not know God as a person Jesus Christ, he knew a concept, a religion, but it brought him no peace.

He says "he serves God in his spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His son". The two cannot be separated. No ministry pleasing to God ever emanated from ourselves.

He prays for these people constantly. Ever think about prayer. When I was a new Christian, I met the dearest saints during those early years. I believe that I am where I am today because they prayed for me. And God is still answering prayer. It is the most powerful gift we can give one another.

I heard Brother Andrew-God's Smuggler, talk about prayer a couple weeks ago at a dinner. Pray, pray, he said. It's the only thing we can do in the face of evil. Prayer is an investment. George Macdonald the famous Scottish preacher, prayed for a friend for over 50 years. Macdonald died and years later his friend came to Christ. Dividends reaped after death. That's an eternal concept.

Developed by French Drug Maker Sanofi-Synthelabo, Acomplia has also been called the anti-Marijuana, because where Marijuana gives folks the "munchies", Acomplia blocks the ability to receive these "munchy" signals.

By blocking the body's ability to receive the signals telling it that it needs to eat or smoke, Acomplia (Rimonabant) allows people to lose their cravings either to overeat or
to smoke (or both simultaneously). Both smokers and overweight people have overstimulated Endocannabinoid Systems. The Endocanabinoid System is a natural physiological system that believed to play a role in maintaining energy balance through the regulation of food intake and energy expenditure. Acomplia selectively blocks some of the receptors in the Endocannabinoid System which puts the system in proper balance.

This drug will be available in America in 2006. In America, the drug will be sold under the name "Acomplia", not Rimonabant.

It is clear that Acomplia will be one of the most significant drugs ever created that will address critical needs of the public. Viagra (followed by Levitra and Cialis) revolutionized treatment for male sexual dysfunction. Phentermine is the most popular diet drug worldwide. Soon, Acomplia will revolutionize how the world treats two significant health issues - stopping smoking and losing weight.

I’m gearing up to quit smoking one more time. It seems like a good idea to list the benefits o

I'm gearing up to quit smoking one more time. It seems like a good idea to list the benefits of quitting smoking here, so I will have something to remind myself later when the going gets rough. I was able to quit smoking for about one year before, and recently started up again, so I know that this can be done.

I think these reasons to quit smoking can help anyone who reads them, so if you've stumbles across this page, I hope they help you quit smoking, too.

If some of these reasons seem a little drastic or don't apply to you, try to remember that I write them as a help for myself, I know I'll need to read these during the early part of my quit.

Reason 1: The first reason to quit smoking is that it will drive you into the poorhouse. By quitting, you can save so much money that the amount is almost beyond belief. A carton of cigarettes costs around sixty dollars here, so I figure around $250 monthly is to be saved by quitting. That's $3,000 annually.

Reason 2: The next, obvious reason to quit smoking is that it will ruin my health almost definitely kill me sooner or later. To elaborate much more on this point would require its own post, or more like an entire additional website. Lung cancer, emphysema, heart attack, stroke. Those are just a few serious health reasons to quit smoking.

Reason 3: It's hard to be a smoker. No smoking is allowed in restaurants, bars, stores, or most of the floor of casinos. It makes more sense to just stay where you are and enjoy the company of the people you're with than to go outside and stand alone in a little smoky cloud while they have dessert. Especially in the winter.

Reason 4: Everything smells like an ashtray. You can't appreciate this unless you're a non-smoker, but your hair, clothes, and car all smell like an ashtray. And your fingers. Go ahead and smell your smoking fingers when you wake up, before your first cigarette of the day. They probably still smell like an ashtray. Not to mention your breath. You ever kiss an ashtray? Blech! Even after you quit smoking, it will take days or weeks to get that smell off of everything.

Reason 5: Your teeth are brown and yellow from smoking cigarettes. Real attractive.

Reason 6: You will wrinkle prematurely if you keep smoking. Whenever you notice someone who seems to age very gracefully, it's always a non-smoker. There are plenty of smokers, however, who can pass for 50-something by the time they're 35 years old. And that's just on the outside. Imagine what's happening on the inside.

Reason 7: You can be more active. You may or may not be interested in playing sports with friends or your kids, or taking a swim in the pool. When you quit smoking you will be better able to do these things. What about being able to climb a flight of stairs without getting winded? Surely everybody is interested in that. I once saw a man miss a bus because he was not able to jog a hundred feet before it pulled away. He told me, with a cigarette in his mouth, that he was going to have to wait an hour and a half for the next one.

Reason 8: No more cigarette burns. You know the ones I'm talking about. How many comments have you heard about your most obvious burn marks? Maybe there's one on your couch or bed, or an article of clothing. If you smoke in the car, there's almost definitely a burn or two. How many times have you gotten hot ashes on your skin or in your eyes? How many times have you lit your own hair on fire? Good luck selling that car.

Reason 9: Protect your family. If you have children, they are hard-wired to want to grow up to be just like you. You can probably skate past most of what you will see here, but if you are a parent I know that you do not want your children to start smoking. If you aren't a parent, ask one of your own parents how they feel about your own smoking. You know the struggle it is to quit smoking. You are the single greatest factor in deciding whether your kids will have to go through the same cycle.

Reason 10: Taste things. Food tastes so much better when you can actually taste it. You have to eat every day ( a few times a day, even), you might as well enjoy it.

Reason 11: Touch things. Your blood circulation is greatly improved when you quit smoking. Your body is better able to regulate the temperature of your extremities, and you will be better able to use your sense of touch. Smokers can eventually get numbness in the fingers or legs, not to mention the next reason to quit smoking...

Reason 12: Sex. Remember that sense of touch? Real helpful in sexual situations. I'm not going to say that quitting smoking will make anybody have better orgasms, because I don't know if that's true. For the men though, improved circulation from quitting smoking will definitely improve your ability to acquire and maintain an erection. Your partner will also certainly appreciate your abliity to do the deed without getting out of breath or physically exhausted.

Reason 13: That damned cough. Quit smoking, quit coughing. It's that simple. How many times a day does your body have to send you signals before you will listen? It might just be a few little coughs in the morning now, but it will become a chronic, persistent cough soon. After that, the signals just get more and more drastic. Before you know it, you'll be wheezing for every breath. Not long after that, your loved ones will be finding out just how good your life insurance is (or not).

Reason 14: Insurance will cost less. Life insurance and health insurance are going to cost more while you're smoking. It never ceases to amaze me how much profit insurance companies make, and they will make it any way they can. Don't give them another excuse to jack up your rates. I'm willing to bet that even auto insurance will be more expensive for smokers soon. Don't believe it? Think about this for a second: They already use your credit score to help determine your rates. If they can decide that less than perfect credit makes you more likely to have an accident (which is ridiculous, but I have a letter from my insurance company stating just that), you had better believe that a driver lighting a match three inches of his or her face is a risk. People have already started doing studies.

Those are my first 14 reasons to quit smoking. There are a lot of silly little ones, but I don't think that I or anybody else is going to make it through a post entitled Sixty Five Thousand Reasons to Quit Smoking.

If you have your own list of reasons, I'd like to know about them. Type them out and post them, and add your the URL along with your comment. I'll either add a links page or devote a seperate post to other reasons, we can trade links if you'd like.

Death related to smoking is a challenge for the entire world. Countries all over the world are looking forward to take harsh steps to decrease smoking cessation. One more idea which has come up in recent times is to have a graphic design on cigarette pack showing the harmful effects on the lungs and the stats of death due to smoking.

The entire world is witnessing a noteworthy anti-smoking campaign these days. Many smokers in European countries have left smoking by taking anti-smoking pills like Chantix. Let’s join in this effort to make the world a cigarette free zone.

Earlier also steps like increasing taxes on Cigarettes have helped and this seems like another good way to curb smoking. Promoting campaigns that can help people get over smoking. Inspiring people to get over smoking by taking medicines like Chantix can help world become a better and healthier place for us and the next generation.

A Harm Reduction Approach to Quitting Smoking

I just wanted to tell my story about getting off nicotine and how I used elements of harm reduction

I just wanted to tell my story about getting off nicotine and how I used elements of harm reduction and use-extinction to do so.

I started by taking Chantix (which is a partial nicotine agonist). I chose Chantix over the patch or gum because it has the best success rate--up to 50% total abstinence.

However I totally rejected the idea of doing the Chantix plan. I needed to make my own plan, When I make my own plans I succeed with them because I am personally involved with them. When others impose plans upon me I am not interested.

This is the first Harm Reduction principle applied: When people are involved in creating their own plans then they are invested in completing those plans.

My insurance would not pay for Chantix--so I had to pay out of pocket. This is another principle which is universal rather than harm reductionist: people put value on what they pay for—whether they pay with money or effort.

One part of the Chantix plan online is a calculator which tells you how much money you save by not smoking. This would definitely be backfiring in my case. I only smoke Bugler rolling tobacco--and it costs me $50 a month to smoke. The Chantix alone costs $150 a month so smoking is much cheaper than Chantix for me.

The second harm reduction element which I worked into my quit cigarettes plan is charting. I started keeping a detailed record of every single cigarette I smoked and within a week of starting the Chantix I was down to half of what I usually smoked.

The third harm reduction technique I used was to stop keeping a supply on hand. I have always bought my Bugler tobacco by the can which is enough for a week or more. Now I started buying it only by the pouch so I would only have enough available for a day or so.

The fourth harm reduction technique I used was to get nicotine gum and chewing tobacco so that I would never have to feel deprived of nicotine any time that I chose not to smoke. I have never opened either the gum or the pack of chew--but I take great psychological comfort in knowing that they are in my backpack handy to me at any time.

I had some withdrawal a few days after starting the Chantix but it soon passed and my cigarettes started tasting really bad. I was hardly smoking at all except in certain situations such as staying at home and reading when the environmental cues would trigger chain-smoking behavior. So after two weeks on the Chantix I decided to buy nicotine-free cigarettes (Quest was the brand I found in New York) and stop inhaling nicotine entirely. I still had the gum and the chew if I felt a need for nicotine--I just would not inhale it anymore.

This illustrates a fifth harm reduction technique: Break the bad habit (undesired behavior--or what the steppers call “addiction”) into component parts and work on one piece at a time.

I have been smoking the nicotine free cigarettes for two days now and I have absolutely NO desire to use the gum or the chewing tobacco--the thought of either makes me nauseous as I type. I have no desire for my Buglers either--now that is a change since I have been smoking Bugler about 20 years now--and I have been smoking something or other every single day for the past 35 years.

Yesterday was my first nicotine free day in 35 years and today is my second.

So I have taken one step towards the final change--I have gotten free of the nicotine addition. I only had some withdrawal about 12 hours after going nicotine free.

Now the thing is to stop the smoking part of the habit. I have cinnamon sticks and I have been chewing on them sometimes instead of a cigarette for the past couple of weeks--it is not a bad substitute. I have also been sucking on Hall’s cough drops. These two techniques comprise a sixth harm reduction technique--substitute a less problematic behavior.

And what is the final goal? Total abstinence? I think not. I would still like to enjoy an occasional cigar now and then. And I think that is okay--because cigars were never a habit for my like the cigarettes. I smoked only pipes and cigars from age 15 to 20--only when I went to college did I start the cigarettes.

Following the Chantix plan instead of using Chantix with my own plan would not have worked for me at all. When people tell me how bad smoking is then I want to smoke. It is only when people tell me that they want me to stick around for a long time because they like me that I want to quit, And total abstinence after one week of Chantix like Pfizer says? That would not work for me. And the money calculator? Hell--taking Chantix and buying nicotine free cigs is costing me roughly nine times as much as smoking Bugler.

So that is why My Own Plan works for me.

All of my patients can now stop rolling their eyes every time this Vancouver Chiropractor tells them to stop smoking, exercise more, eat well and drink moderately. My patients are quite used to my preachings on living a healthier lifestyle, and now (as if I didn't have enough research to back me up) a new article has been posted in the British Medical Journal extolling these virtues.

This 24-year long study followed a group of over 77,000 women between the ages of 34 and 59 who had no signs of heart disease (when the study began). They wanted to determine the relation of their health to 5 lifestyle factors:

Being overweight

Smoking

Excessive drinking

Poor Diet

Little physical activity

Over the years 8882 of the women died - 1790 from heart disease and 4527 from cancer. Each of the above lifestyle factors was found to significantly increase the chance of dying from any disease (not just those listed above). Another interesting fact is that women who drank moderately (up to one drink per day) actually had less chance of dying from heart disease than those who did not drink at all.

While it may seem like a tall order to follow the recommendations of this study, it really doesn't need to be that complicated. You don't need to hit the gym, lift weights and run ten miles everyday. Often, a healthy lifestyle is all about the little things.

Quitting smoking is a must. No if, ands or buts. If you are having trouble, both acupuncture and low intensity laser therapy are safe and effective options. You don't need to give up your wine or spirits, simply moderate it to a one-drink a day maximum.

Simple diet choices can significantly improve your nutrition, while decreasing obesity. Choose whole grain foods, less red meats and cut out the soda and excess sugar. As for exercise, walking to work or the corner store will ensure that you achieve the 30 minutes of exercise per day that is considered minimum.

Revamping your entire life to begin an unsustainable nutritional and exercise plan is not the answer - you need to make sure you take small steps in the right direction and change your lifestyle in a comfortable way. These simple changes can literally mean cutting your risk of early death by 50%.

Did you know that Smoking is both a habit and an addiction. Every time you reach for a cigarette it

Did you know that Smoking is both a habit and an addiction. Every time you reach for a cigarette it's out of habit and usually it's not because you truly wanted it not really. Who would really desire or want the taste of nicotine in their mouth, smoke smell on their hands and on their hair. Did you also know that the nicotine that is in your cigarettes are more deadly then AIDS.

Did you know that Lite Cigarettes are worst then the regulars really non are good for you.Habits are affected by your environment like your friends, work, school or activities. Something you see or do things in your everyday life that is something that gives a cue that is associated with your smoking which becomes a habit.

When you first smoked can you remember how it was? Its was fun, exciting and for some it was cool. No matter if you were feeling sick to the stomach. So to make yourself feel better you smoked more and it became easier. The nausea and bad taste disappear red after awhile. This caused you to become familiar with the taste of something that was bad is now good to your senses and without realizing it, you quickly began to enjoy smoking, ignoring the signs your body was giving you to stop.

You begin to smoke during times you spent with friends. Good times, stressful times. Smoking became apart of your lifestyle and now it became a necessity. It's no longer a fad or a statement it's now a part of your life. You make sacrifices to let it interrupt your life in public and private times As a result, you now light a cigarette whenever you feel hungry but you don't want to eat. You might choose to smoke at a mealtime. This causes you to lose weight and this is why some people fear weight gain when they quit smoking.

People smoke for different reasons but what triggers this is stressful moments as family gatherings, meetings, business calls, decision making, boredom, Family issues, depression, anxieties, worries and being alone can cause someone to smoke more then usual.

Some People think cigarettes are a excuse for some because they do not have the courage to seek help for situations that are in their controlled. When something triggers a person to smoke good or bad it becomes a dependence to smoke in order to complete a job or to do it successfully.

Did you ever see some smokers lit up when they have a cup of coffee. Some can't sleep till they smoke their last one of the evening. Others feel a soothing relief during a stressful moment they get a calming effect after they lit up. This is a Nicotine addiction the side effects of nicotine combine with the effects of coffee gives you that extra charge that stimulates you. The rush you feel from this combination gives the feelings of anxious, stress, depression this brings the next step for you to smoke a cigarette to bring you to the satisfying feeling you had in the beginning of the day.

Now to the smoker this relaxes them and makes them calm down to sleep and be able to think more logical. In other words this is an addicting nature that happens such as Alcohol and Narcotics which is so deceiving.Smoking a habit forming addiction that is legal and can be dealt with if the smoker realizes this and gets a handle on this habit to live a healthy life.

Smoking cigarettes can greatly increase the risk of returning to drug and alcohol use.

There is a growing body of evidence provided by research studies that shows that smokers have a significantly higher rate of relapse back to drug and alcohol use than non-smokers. This should come as no surprise when we look at nicotine use as consuming a drug.

Nicotine is a drug, it is mood altering, highly addictive, and a poison.

In drug and alcohol treatment, the concept of complete abstinence from all mood altering substances is almost universally accepted. Why has nicotine been traditionally excluded? I am not sure, quite possibly because of historical social acceptance of smoking. Condoning nicotine use for an alcoholic or drug addict is almost like telling an alcoholic to give up rum, scotch and beer...but tequila is OK.

There is a popular myth that trying to quit using nicotine products while giving up drugs and alcohol is too much to handle. The new evidence shows the reverse is true; people attempting to stop smoking while in treatment for drugs and alcohol actually have a higher rate of success. Arguably, for a smoker, a key element in their drug and alcohol relapse prevention plan is to stop smoking.

This higher rate of success makes sense if we look at some key elements of how to quit smoking and their ready availability during drug and alcohol treatment.

1. Getting support and setting a date. In treatment, counseling, encouragement and peer support is readily available.

2. Learning alternative coping skills. An important element in quitting smoking is to make concrete changes in dealing with situations where smoking occurred. For example, handling boredom or stress.

3. Preparing a relapse prevention plan. A prepared plan to handle difficult situations is like an insurance policy; you may never need it, but it is wise to have it in place.

These are important elements in any type of relapse prevention plan. There is a great deal of additional information available on relapse prevention and quitting smoking.
