Plaid skirts have a high tendency to be predictable, unfashionable and a little too pigeon-holed by Catholic schoolchildren; but this particular piece manages to avoid all of the above.

The first plus is the lack of pleats.  Where you think pleated skirts; either the aforementioned school children or grannies come to mind.  If you're not going for the grandma-hipster look, listen up.  The term 'shirring' is another word for gathering, so you get the texture and the details without having the overlapping pleats.  The second win for the design is the thick waistline.  The buttons give a nice detailing, while the waist gets instantly defined by the line above the loose skirt.

Currently, this skirt is on for $33. I can't really think of another retailer with a better piece design for a lesser price.  Get on it!

A Scottish Dance is not the easiest thing to enjoy without a partner. But the Intrepid Explorer was pitting himself against the elements and exhaustion, riding through the night and rain, and we had both been invited to celebrate the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary of friends. So I looked out a long length of red tartan silk, wrapped it round me and my new red coat, and went alone. I was betting on knowing several other people there, and hoping that other women might lend me their husbands for a dance or two.

When my daughter was born she was a surprise. I knew nothing about babies. All my experience started about a year and a half later. I knew nobody who had a baby either. I had endured excrutiatingly bad ante-natal classes with a local branch of an organisation called the National Childbirth Trust. This is a club for middle-class women and their husbands and, at the time, advocated practising for birth by pushing a grapefruit down the sleeve of a jumper, and made us recite like mantras the horrible side effects of interventions that we wanted to avoid during our natural birthing. Epidural. Permanent paralysis and cerebral haemorrage. Epidural. Permanent paralysis and cerebral haemorrage. Now, looking back on it, I remember that we all had to draw our impressions of childbirth and our helper (a woman whose memory of her birth was very recent) scribbled all over the page with chaotic frenzy. I probably drew a paddling pool and a bottle of geranium essential oils.

The Intrepid Explorer and I arrived at the hospital with a games compendium - snakes and ladders and draughts - and several cartons of apple juice, and almost total ignorance. A twenty one hour labour left me catatonic and only a brilliant midwife with more stamina than the Intrepid Explorer and an epidural (permenant paralysis ... cerebral haemorrage ... permanent paralysis ... cerebral haemorrage) allowed me to sleep long enough to have a normal delivery. I was traumatised and amazed to discover that I could still move my limbs and that my brain was not bleeding. I spent five days in hospital learning, step by step, how to bath my baby, how to change my baby's terry towelling nappy, how to feed my baby. First I was shown how to bath her. They I bathed her under supervision. Then I was allowed to bath her alone. Then I went home.

My own doctor came to visit and told me that if I'd lived in Africa I would be dead. Which may have been true, but probably not terribly helpful. The midwife who had stayed the course continued to visit for the next five days, then handed over to the health visitor. Her visits tailed off quickly and I was on my own.

Now the nice middle-class National Childbirth Class came into its own. The local group organised coffee mornings for new Mums, and teamed up each New Mum with a more experienced Mother who could support her. I was teamed up with Sheila. She had three daughters, the youngest of whom was only a few months older than my daughter. Our elder daughter has the same name as her middle daughter. Now our same-aged daughters are in the same class at school and play the cello and violin in the same string quartet. In my turn, I was later teamed up with another New Mum. She is my Companion-in-Madness. Firm friendships formed through testing times. Children who have grown up alongside each other.

On Saturday those three daughters stood up at the end of the two short speeches after supper, and gathered round a piano to sing three lilting Scottish songs. I wanted to cry, so moving was their unwitting tribute to the purpose and blessing of a marriage that has lasted a quarter of a century. No so much their singing - which was beautiful - but just the three of them, standing there, each independent and self-assured and other-worldly in a good way. Strong, individual, intelligent minds allowed to flourish in a home which allowed them room to be as different as they wanted.

I danced as many dances as I wanted to dance. I stripped the willow, danced the Gay Gordons, and wove my way up and down long lines of happy people keeping my right arm for my partner and offering only my left arm to strangers. Sometimes I sat the dance out and watched. In the faces of the dancers I saw each of them as young children, as seven or eight year olds, all cares cast away, and I smiled. The women looked like sweet fresh-faced girls and the men were cheeky or worried or intent and counting furiously, 1-2-3-4. I told everyone who would listen about the mad exploits of the Intrepid Explorer, and then I went home to my daughters. My elder daughter greeted me with a big hug, and I felt very grateful for epidurals and for the National Childbirth Trust.

Well, it's 2008, and crazy enough, plaid is back, and just in time for the fall.  Plaid can go well with a variety of different outfits, it just depends on how you wear it.  And since it is usually made from a heavier material, it's perfect to keep warm as the "hawk" starts rear its ugly head. 

First off, I actually did some research, and came across the term "tartan," which is a pattern consisting of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple coulours (read: PLAID).  So when you're wearing you're plaid (I mean, Tartan) shirt, give your critic some knowledge on the pattern.  The look is not so much a wear-to-work look; go for a casual look when putting on a shirt.  Since the patterns do look a bit busy, try pairing with a solid colored sweater / vest that will bring out some of the patterns in the shirt.   J Crew has a very good selection of nice tartan patterned shirts for the fall...

Try not to add too much to your wardrobe ie. dont wear a belt, shoes, pants all with the same pattern.  If you're going to pair it with a tie, make sure its solid - again, the pattern is already busy, so you don't want to add too much / clash with your wardrobe.   Dark colors work well like greys or navy to accent the colors.   Although the pattern that Skateboard P has is not tartan (looks more like gingham) I think it conveys the point well.

Of course, I meerly looked at them occasionally and took this pic when the sun broke through the cloud in front of the studio. Don't you just love that gun metal grey and silver thing? It's just occurred to me, this picture could make a great banner background for the Lismore crafters etsy shop (if ever we get round to doing one)

I also made a hat and two brooches for an etsy client and finally managed to cut all the rectangles for the next project: a loose sofa cover for Mary in that lovely tweed and tartan that I use for the loopy's. 18 metres of piping done and only another 9 to go! The amount of piping needed for a moderate sofa defies belief. Anyhow, I'll keep you posted on the process for those of you interested.

Last night I decide to retire, due to unforeseen difficulties with Otloml. I even deleted all the posts. I should have known that a computer guru would know far more than me and be able to retrieve them. On the understanding that heavy censorship is to be in place, I have been allowed, nay encouraged to continue. I am not sure, but here goes.

A pleasant morning. Bright skies. i should be mowing the grass but at present it is too wet. Otloml is playing with his latest toy. Fired up by the ease with which his charity shop juicer turned surplus apples into a pleasant drink, he has decided to try his hand at making cider. As if there wasn't enough to do! However, the trip to Forfar yesterday enabled him to buy the necessary kit and, unfortunately, to listen in to the chat of two people who had been successful in making their own home brewed cider. The problem is that, where some would see this as a money saving skill, meaning less alcohol will be bought, I foresee that it will just mean more alcohol will be drunk. I suppose I should be glad at the distraction.

I printed out details of Nuit Blanche in Paris for him. I may have seen this as a kind of test since I am sure he used at least one previous trip to Paris which coincided with Nuit Blanche as an opportunity for sex with That French Woman. And I was regretful because it fell within term time so I couldn't go! This year it is on for the first weekend of the hols, but he doesn't even seem to be interested. The idea is that for one night, all public buildings in Paris have free access and there are special concerts and displays. I have never been, but Otloml has, about three times I think. We did talk about going back to France, but I think it's too late to make plans now. The last time we were both there , last summer , he later said he was hating me though I thought we were enjoying ourselves.

A reply on the agony column of the supplement for the " Mail on Sunday" sums up nicely how I felt about Otloml's betrayal of me.

"The betrayed wife is usually so angry and immersed in her own pain that she couldn't care less if she is hurting her husband".

This was certainly true of me. Otloml said that he understood this morning, when I showed him the comment, but I don't think he was really paying attention. In his mind, he has moved on and cannot see my fears still exist. His "former" lover here has been so accommodating that of course I suspect her motives. She is a free woman, she is younger, she is still fertile  she " understood"  Otloml during his period of stress last year. My fears are that if he could succumb to her blandishments before, then why should I doubt that he might give way again? I have no control over his trips north and because of the fuck-ups over this damned display, they are set to continue. Otloml jokes that I could give in to sexual temptation here, but knows perfectly well that I have no opportunity, even if I wished to hurt him in this way. His "ex' mistress however, will be available when her children come down to visit her husband in the school holidays. He will no doubt have to go north again : there is sure to be some other crisis judging by previous experience and I will be back where I have been so many times before. Fretting, worrying, doubting, waiting, No matter how many little tasks I set myself, I will still miss him passionately and as we know, I still feel unable to fully trust him.

No matter. We have worked together today in the garden. He gathering windfall apples and pulping them for his brew, me mowing grass, chopping back bushes. Apparently you can tap this brew he is concocting to see if the fermentation process has started. He has also been told that you can continue to add apple juice to the mixture as the season progresses. He claims he will produce a rough cider akin to scrumpy. We will see. It certainly means I can use the better apples for pies and jellies. A few years ago he was keen to hire a cider press from the shop in Forfar but someone had "forgotten" to return it. I wonder if Rosemary Conley would approve of the use to which her juicer is being put. I presume she put her nane to it when smoothies became trendy. Can they be good for the hips and thighs? Honestly, all you need to start weight loss as far as I can see is a bit of marital stress. It is the only thing I have had happen to me and here I am contemplating the exchange of my loose Per Una skirts from last year for vouchers at whatever charity shop had that idea.  Knowing my luck, the offer will have passed and I shall just have to hitch the loose garments up with safety pins! Of course there is always the possibility that when (if?) our relationship gets back on an even keel I may put the weight back on. I hope not. I have never dieted in my life and don't want to start at my advanced age.

I have been studying the fashion pages of the colour supplements today. I could really do with a new winter coat. We must surely be going to have a bad winter soon and I have got by in recent years with jackets. Nothing in these pages really inspires me. Once again apparently, tartan is trendy but I think I'll leave it for the kilts. I did see an advert for a nice Radley bag. I usually find them a bit twee, but this was a satchel shape. Probably hideously expensive and I don't need a new bag. Does that matter?

Otloml is meant to be composing another press release for up north. Honestly, things have changed so much, he probably needs to start from scratch. And then some other crisis will happen. No, I'm not cynical, but this is Narnia we are talking about remember. A totally different time zone. I can tell though that he has allowed himself to be distracted by the idea of having a new look floor in his office. The sample he painted yesterday looks quite good and the dark grey(slate) colour he finally chose actually seems to cover the shellac. I am surprised that there has not been some sort of chemical reaction causing the new paint to peel off, but at the back of my mind I have a strange idea that shellac was a natural product. It can't have been from beetle shells can it? Am I just confusing it with cochineal which of course is banned by vegetarians.

The evening draws on. A cool one but let's hope relations between Otloml and I are warm. I do still love him. Does he really love me?

In the last two days, the site has received two blessings, one from the Hindu builders from Shillong and a Unitarian one from me and the local workers. Using Singing the Living Tradition for inspiration, I found one home blessing from Genesis chapter 28:

“Surely the Lord is in this place – and I did not know it. How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Nangroi lent me his Khasi Bible, so I read the blessing in Khasi. We also placed a one-rupee coin in one of the foundation pits to ensure that the AMBCV will always be financially secure. I missed the Hindu blessing, but I know that it involved Roman candle firecrackers and therefore was probably pretty neat.

Now that I’m taking a “lazy” Saturday at home in Kharang – instead of making myself silly with the hustle of Shillong :) – I’m going to catch up with some interesting Meghalayan happenings I have not yet shared with this blog.

First, we have a big pilgrimage of folks from America – including my parents, who've just arrived in Delhi!! – coming next week, but last week we also had a group of visitors from Canada! Of course, Sharmila was the most excited out of all of us volunteers. (After putting up with Jon and my American antics, I really couldn’t blame her :) ) But, I also got to talking with one of the ladies about Child Haven, a Canadian-Unitarian-run organization with orphanages across India. I’m happy to have another place where from I’ll perhaps receive useful advice about running a home for children.

Next, I had a lot of fun attending College Week events at Lady Keane College, where Khlur is a professor. I met some really nice girls who took care of me when Khlur was busy officiating. I had the opportunity to hear the Minister of Education speak, and see some girls dressed in traditional and modern Khasi fashion. It’s also the first time in my life I’ve seen a no-talent-or-question-&-answer-portion beauty pageant. Certainly don’t have those in the States anymore!

I've also been able to upload a few more photos to my Flickr account, so now I'm caught up to some pictures of our big volunteer work day!


One should note my various tartan-print items. Meghalaya is sometimes called "the Scotland of northeast India," with its rolling hills and love of plaid.

On the serious side, the Khasi Unitarian community had a tragedy the first weekend I was in Shillong. A prominent member of the Unitarian Union, Bah Phinton, passed away after falling critically ill in a short time. He was ninety years old. Bah Phinton lived a long and honorable life, serving the Unitarian community in a number of capacities, working with Annie Margaret Barr, and always assisting visitors from abroad. His daughter, son, and niece have been very kind to me in my time here, even though they are in grieving.

Another saddening event happened while I visited the Nongkrem Unitarian Church last weekend. Much of the visit was actually quite pleasant: Khlur brought me and his son, Mon, out to the village, which is notable because it is the birthplace of the Khasi tribe’s royal line, and I had a lovely time with them and with Cream Lemon, whose family is from there. The church itself is also beautiful. However, Cream took me to visit two orphaned children of her village, a pair of cousins who are forced to raise themselves and live in a separate, tiny room next door to their guardians. These children are clearly lacking in love and nutrition – the young boy, who is nine, is the same size as Cream’s four-year-old nephew! – yet they keep an immaculate home and were extremely polite and friendly to all of us. Obviously, they are at the top of our list for children to come into the Children’s Village!

Looking ahead, today is church plus barefoot-soccer (unless the rain thwarts us), Tuesday is Sharmila’s birthday, Thursday is Gandhi-ji’s birthday, and the first American visitors will be trickling in starting on Wednesday!

That’s all the news fit to print. Overall, I’m really enjoying watching the foundation building and thrilled that my parents will be here in a week!

My photo today, is of our dear friend Stephen, modeling his brand new kilt and Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket.  He has wanted this thing for a very long time, and finally, with his income from the summer at Bristol, was able to make his purchase from Scotland at the end of the season.  It arrived this morning!  So, a little bit wrinkled from overseas shipping, but looking awfully fine---here it is!  The jacket is a yummy sort of indigo/navy blue, rather than black---a very fun change from the usual.  The kilt itself is made of a lightweight, Stirling Regional tartan.  It's really a beautiful weave---I took a more close-up shot of it, too.

Stephen bought these beautiful pieces, knowing that they would be the main part of his attire for the Gingerbread Ball.  Unfortunately, the fate of the 2008 Gingerbread Ball is uncertain.

Grâce à une petite blouse Bel Air trouvée sur Bazar Chic je me suis concoctée une petite silhouette presque à la mode qui me plaît beaucoup.

En plus ça met en valeur mon petit chaperon rouge, et ça j'adore!!!!

La blouse a bien piqué l'écossais d'une chemise de bucheron, par contre elle a une vraie coupe féminine. Oui ok il ne faut pas être frileuse.

Ma veste Tara Jarmon chérie pour réchauffer la petite chose et trancher avec les carreaux, mes pythons chéris, ma dernière trouvaille N2 et zouh! I'm the queen of Scotts!

PIPERS, Highland ghillies and lumberjacks are set to become unlikely fashion icons this autumn when tartan hits the shops as the latest style trend.

High street shops, including Next, Topshop and H&M, have embraced the Scottish pattern, incorporating it into everything from overcoats to ballgowns.

Tartan hit the catwalks in February when designers unveiled their autumn collections, and Scottish designers also took last week's London Fashion Week by storm with their collections for next spring.

With Scotland's own Fashion Council also launching last week, experts are predicting all things Scottish to come into style over the coming months.

Tartan hit the mainstream thanks to British designer Henry Holland and model Agyness Deyn, who took to the catwalk in a tartan ball dress, tartan antlers and a matching eye patch.

It was also adopted by Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and Just Cavalli, which pushed tartan to be adopted by many shops for their autumn collections.

Brian Wilton, director of the Scottish Tartans Authority, said: "The fashion industry has gone crazy for tartan. It's great for tourism because every time someone sees tartan they think of Scotland.

Dos: Adorarás el estilo de los 90 por encima de todas las cosas. Parece que fue ayer y ya ha dado tiempo a que los 90 desaparecieran del mapa y hayan vuelto con más fuerza que nunca. Revisa los looks de series como Sensación de vivir o el Príncipe de Bel-Air (sí, has leído bien) y sal a la calle como si formaras parte del reparto.

 

 

 

 

Tres: Honrarás al tartán. Por segundo año consecutivo las camisas de tartán son un must, aunque esta vez es mejor utilizarlas a modo de vestido como Mary Kate Olsen en el concierto de Radiohead.

Parece que el mundo de la moda por fin se apiada de nosotras y de nuestras carteras.

 

 

 

 Cuatro: PVCearás tus piernas. Los leggins de PVC, látex, vinilo o lamé aparecieron el año pasado de forma fugaz y este año han llegado para quedarse. Es un poco difícil conseguirlos, el año pasado Zara los puso a la venta y volaron de las perchas. En Internet están a la venta en la web de Patricia Field (www.patriciafield.com) y en la versión americana de Urban Outfitters.

 

 

 

 

Cinco: No cometerás excesos con el look folk. A la hora de llevar a la calle esta tendencia, procura hacerlo con medida. No se trata de parecer una matrioshka. Combina este tipo de prendas con cuero o tejido vaquero.

 

 

 

 

 
 
 
 

Seis: Te vestirás de encaje. Este tipo de tejido es el protagonista en la colección de Prada, y como ha sucedido en las últimas temporadas, lo que Miuccia crea va a misa.

Siete: Brillarás durante la noche. Y no hace falta que sea con luz propia. Con propuestas como la de Balmain los brillos y las tachuelas vienen de serie.

 

 

 

 

Ocho: No llevarás el look gótico en vano. Me refiero a que no parecerás sacada de un concierto del señor Manson. Olvídate de medias de rejilla y enseñar más de lo estrictamente necesario. Fija tu mirada en el desfile de Chanel, sigue los dictados de Karl Lagerfeld y olvídate de las tribus urbanas.

 

 

Nueve: Cubrirás tu cuello. Eso sí, evitando siempre caer en el más que machacado shemagh, que con el invierno pasado ya estuvo bien… Prueba pañuelos en tejidos como la seda y de estampado paisley.

 

 

 

Diez: Serás fiel al dios Gato con Botas. Vuelven las botas y los botines y destierran casi por completo cualquier otro calzado de nuestro armario. No importa que sean de tacón, planas, de cuero o de ante. Botas, botas, botas.

No puedo ser objetiva con Marc Jacobs. Le he amado durante demasiados años como para dejar de hacerlo ahora, aunque cada vez le entienda menos. ¿Por qué hace justo un año se volvió austero y hoy le da por My Fair Lady en versión futurista? Creo que lo que ha presentado para la primavera de 2009 se puede entender de dos maneras:

1. Ha mezclado todo lo que ha encontrado, así, al azar, y nos está tomando el pelo. Luego es un genio.

2. Captura como nadie, una vez más, la esencia de la sociedad del momento. Así, representa el ritmo vertiginoso de las tendencias actuales solapándolas todas a la vez y habla de Barak Obama a tarvés de una estética inspirada en la inmigración americana del siglo XIX. Luego es un genio.

En cualquiero caso, sigue siendo , quizá no el mejor diseñador, pero sí el mejor estilista. Esa mezcla de cuadros rústicos + lamé me encanta. Y las tiras de cuadros envolviendo la cintura son otro hitazo, así como las alpargatas con tacones (¿re-volverán el próximo verano?). Él, no obstante, me gustaba mucho más con los pantalones de pinza, la camisita, las Adidas Stan Smith y las gafas de nerd, que como el chulo-putas italiano disfrazdo de mujer (lleva falda) que enseña ahora al final del desfile.

No matter what Marc Jacobs does, I'll always love him, even though every season I understand him less and less. His new S/S 2009 collection (futuristic My Fair Lady) can be seen from two very different perspectives:

1. He's just messed up everything he's found, fooling us.

2. He captures once again -as the geniuos he is- the essence of modern society. Thus, he speaks about Barak Obama by recalling XIX century American inmigrants, and also about vertiginous speed of today's fashion which forces to wear all trends together at a time. Otherwise, there is no time to assimilate them all.

In any case, he keeps on being -maybe not the best designer- but the best stylist. I love the mixture of plaid + shimmering fabrics, as well as the eclectic shoes and the waist wraps. One thing I don't like at all is his new look at the end of the catwalk. Where did lovely and nerdy Marc go? (Please, forgive my English mistakes, I'm aware there may be a lot at my writing).

I can't remember the last film I watched in the cinema that was really good. Everything was great about Badlands. It starred a very young (Virgin Suicides-like ethereal beauty) Sissy Spacek and a dashing Martin Sheen. The first time the two meet has a great an impact as when Romeo and Juliet meet. Holly is twirling a baton outside her house and is sunbleached. It looks timeless.

Essentially a road movie, the cinematography in this is beautiful and the little dialogue in it funny.

I walked out feeling inspired by the 1970s prairie, ruffle shirts. Holly is on the run, but her wardrobe has inspired me for the autumn months. Longer-sleeved ruffled blouses. Victorian blouses. Paired with jeans, this is going to be my new look.

So obsessed that I've been scouring vintage sites looking for these blouses. I am also pining for this ruffled, tartan Naf Naf blouse my mum bought me when I was about 13. I'm hoping it's sitting somewhere at the bottom of the wardrobe back home because it would be perfect.

Last week I was sitting in the cottage with a group of friends when it was suggested that I make egg cosies. "Does anyone really use egg cosies?" I mused.

You see our family is far too rushed and dare I say it, disorganised at breakfast time to have the wherewithal to consider coats for our eggs and Yorick just comes over all incredulous when I mention them. But...three people in this group of friends admitted that they are regular users! Well I've made some and here they are and go dammit they're selling!
