One of my favorite Asian Cuisine aside from Japanese is Thai. I love how they use fresh ingredients and the right amount of spices to kick the taste buds up a notch. They also love using different herbs like Thai sweet basil, Lemon Grass, Galenggal. The newest Thai restaurant being this one in Nicanor Garcia.

Located in the spot where Soms used to be(the 2^nd Makati branch which closed down.) not the Rockwell branch.

The owner is also thai and is said to be related to the owner of Soms. According to a blog i read, they are cousins

The place is alfresco, No aircon. Good thing I got to dine here when the weather was very cool, it just rained. They maintained the old tables of soms, but they ipened up the area so that air would circulate thru out the whole restaurant.

On the Table:

Crispy Catfish Salad-(130) flossed catfish, deep fried, served on top of a green mango salad with a tangy dressing made from thai fish sauce, lime juice, sugar. The Catfish was fried to perfect crisp. The green mangoes sliced just right, not too thin and not too thick. The dressing was just perfect. Better than the ones at Soms, both in amount and in taste.

Pandan Chicken(140)- 5 pieces of Boneless Chicken pieces wrapped in Pandan Leaves then fried. Better than the ones at Soms. I didnt like the sauce here... it was too salty.

Squid in Garlic and Basil(140)- The squid was cooked correctly, Tender, not a challenge to eat, very good. The sauce was a nice blend of the sweet basil and garlic. Very fragrant.

Crab Fried Rice(130)- huge serving. Good for at least 3 people. The flaked crabmeat was evident in every spoonful.

Tom Yum Gung(140)- Spicy and sour. Right blend of these two taste. What was lacking here was a little more veggies. But the soup was delicious and warms the tummy on a wet rainy night.

Thai ice tea-I always order it in a thai restaurant and their version was good.

For my taste, this place has better food than SOMS.. to all SOMS lovers, try this place and see for yourself...

Nothing fancy with the pump-it-yourself coffee (i had the hazelnut flavor), and the pastries are shipped in from somewhere.   Overall, you get what you need here, but nothing special that merits a visit if you're not in the area.

Pure Luck Restaurant (Wilshire Center, Los Angeles, CA)
Vegan.  We were in the area today, so we stopped here for lunch.  I've heard of this place before but last time we were at scoops, this place was being renovated / fixed up (it was new year's eve)

At Pure Luck, i remembered that you can't make something that it's not.  While some Chinese Vegan places may have really good "goose" and other faux-meat soy products, this American Vegan place reminded me to get the real thing out there in the real world.

I should have just stuck with the vegetarian/vegan that were originally v/v.  Instead, i made the mistake of ordering Todd's Pulled Pork sandwich.  On one hand, I wanted to try the vegan take on pulled pork.  I was pleased to learn that jackfruit is a staple as a substitute for meat.  My guess is that its bland flavor easily absorbs others' so it can be a cameleon and become a part of the Kristen's Carnitas Burrito as well.

The pulled pork sandwich tasted better than the burrito, but our verdict was that we've at least gave vegan a try, but we won't be chasing this lifestyle anytime soon.

The soup of the day was Kabuli Cholay (curry gorbanzo).  A little bland but something different for the palate.   The vegan beer was crisp - pretty big glass for moderate-sized portions of food.

one tip: DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR CREDIT CARD WITH YOU after you sign the sales receipt.  The restaurant has a collection after many people have forgotten to take the card with them.  They don't open on Sunday so you would be screwed if you ate and forgot your cc here on Saturday.

Homemade Gelato.   Ah, Scoops.  Ever since W (same friend who introduced me to Pinkberry years ago) brought me here, I haven't looked forward to getting my gelato anywhere else.   The prices have climbed since my first time, but it's still worth it.

After Pure Luck we came here for dessert and itried the LSD: lemon strawberry durian, Paris pastis (anise), Passion fruit jasmine, Orange campari, Red tea kahlua, and got the LSD and passion fruit jasmine combination.

I've never had real durian even though i know it's supposed smell really bad, but i was okay with this combo.

One scoop gets you two flavors.  Really, it's big enough for two people (at least for me).

I'm the type that dreads going to the same place twice but with the variety of new flavors and combination, in conjunction with the price for value, i don't mind coming back here often.

Jitlada Thai (Hollywood, CA)
Thai.   Came here with K and E before watching Wicked at the Pantages (it was as good as the one I saw in London).  

I was amazed at the very-Thai menu, listing at least a hundred things that you probably can't find at the common Thai places in LA.  There even was a section only written in Thai (must be weird human organ or strange dishes).   I was pretty excited.

When my friends ordered the pad thai and pad see ew, I went with something "safe" for their sake.  I got the Jitlada fried rice.  Not the best fried rice (probably leftover meat stir fried together), and definitely the loser out of the three dishes on our table.

The pad thai and pad see ew were flavorful and a little bit on the spicy side.  Pretty addictive.  

The Thai iced tea was pretty standard, except the size of the glass (even the glasses themselves) weren't standard at the restaurant.    The Thai lemonade is lemony-lime with salt.  If you're not used to this southeast asian flavor, be warned.

Next time, I want to try something on the back page of the menu where it's not just the non-local favorites of curry or noodles.   I'll be back!

It’s all about the curry paste. And unless you have a few thousand dollars to take a cooking class in Chiang Mai, head to Bangkok Center Grocery in Chinatown and grab the Nittaya curry paste (we do have shares in both of these companies and they have survived the financial crisis nicely). Most Thai restaurants in NYC source their curries from this store, so you aren’t cheating. You might want to call ahead to make sure they have their curry paste in stock as it ships direct from Thailand and recent civil unrest has disrupted supply! You’ll need to pick up the Kaffir lime leaves (grown in back of the store) and the Thai basil here. You can procure everything else locally.

This Penang curry was easy to cook, easy on the wallet, and downright delicious.

Penang Curry with Chicken
Makes 3 servings

Note: For a great glossary explaining some of the Thai ingredients you might not be familiar with, check out this post by another of our guest contributors, Brian.

- One large chicken breast, thinly sliced
- 1 can coconut milk
- 4 tablespoons panang curry paste
- 2 tablespoons palm sugar
- 3 tablespoons fish sauce
- 7 Kaffir lime leaves – 4 in pieces, removed from stems; 3 shredded for garnish
- ½ cup sweet (Thai) basil leaves (Note: very hard to keep – the leaves quickly wilt – you cannot refrigerate them or freeze them. I have had some luck with putting them in a vase like flowers!)
- A few bamboo shoots (from can)
- Vegetables to taste:  red/green pepper, snow peas, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms

1. Cook the rice first! It always takes longer. Do yourself a favor (the NYT agrees) and buy a rice cooker in Chinatown for $20. 1.5 cups of rice is sufficient for this dish

2. Fry half of the coconut milk in a wok for a few minutes; stir continuously until coconut oil begins to separate.  Add curry paste and fry for 1-2 minutes.  Add meat and cook until outside is cooked.  Add the rest of the coconut milk and bring to a boil.  Add vegetables in order of length of time required to cook ie carrots, broccoli, pepper, mushrooms, and finally snow peas. Simmer and add the palm sugar along the side of the wok until it melts, then add fish sauce and Kaffir lime leaf pieces.  Stir – let curry reduce until desired thickness/consistency is achieved.  Add half of the basil leaves.  Garnish with the shredded Kaffir lime leaves and remaining basil. You might want to take out the large lime leaves before eating – they are for imparting flavor, not eating.

3. Serve over the white rice you made. You can substitute red curry for panang curry in this recipe.

ส่วนของโซนไทย จะเริ่มให้บริการวันที่ 23 ต.ค.นี้ คาดว่าภายใน 6 เดือน จะมีผู้เล่นเพิ่มเป็น 3 ล้านไอดี จากปัจจุบันมีประมาณ 1.7 ล้านไอดี จากนั้นต้นปีหน้าจะเริ่มให้บริการในต่างประเทศ เริ่มที่ญี่ปุ่น และขยายไปอีกกว่า 10 ประเทศ เช่น เกาหลี, เวียดนาม, สหรัฐอเมริกา, รัสเซีย และเนเธอร์แลนด์

ขณะที่ เกมเก็ทแอมป์เอ็กซ์ จะเริ่มให้บริการวันนี้ (10 ต.ค.) มีฟีเจอร์ใหม่ๆ เช่น เล่นได้พร้อมกัน 16 คน จากเดิม 8 คน ทั้งพัฒนาระบบเอนจิ้นให้ทันสมัยมากกว่าเกมออนไลน์อื่นๆ

“ตอนนี้ตลาดเกมออนไลน์ในประเทศไทยมา จากเกาหลี 90% จุดเด่นของเกาหลีคือมีภาพกราฟฟิกที่สวยงาม เกมจากญี่ปุ่นที่ดิจิคราฟต์นำเข้ามา อาจมีภาพที่สวยน้อยกว่า แต่ถ้าเทียบเชิงเทคโนโลยีและระบบเอนจิ้นแล้ว ยืนยันว่าดีกว่าแน่นอน ยิ่งมีการทำตลาดนำคาแรกเตอร์การ์ตูนไทยเข้ามา ถือเป็นการฉีกแนวเป็นครั้งแรก” นายสุรศักดิ์ กล่าว

พร้อมระบุว่า การนำคาแรกเตอร์การ์ตูนเข้ามา จะทำให้เกมเป็นที่รู้จักมากขึ้นในประเทศ และยังมีโอกาสทำตลาดต่างประเทศต่อยอดด้านตัวการ์ตูน คาแรกเตอร์ และได้เผยแพร่ความเป็นไทยไปในตัว และสร้างโอกาสการทำตลาดแอนิเมชั่นออกต่างประเทศ

เกมเก็ทแอมป์ เริ่มให้บริการในประเทศไทยมา 4 ปี ซึ่งเขากล่าวว่า แม้ไม่ได้ทำตลาดอย่างหนักเหมือนเกมออนไลน์อื่นๆ แต่ก็ได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดี เพราะกระแสเกมสไตล์แคช่วล ที่ใช้เวลาเล่นน้อย ประมาณ 15 นาทีต่อ 1 รอบ กำลังได้รับความนิยม

ส่วนการพัฒนาเกมอื่นๆ ของบริษัท นอกจากเกมออนไลน์ อาคาน่า ที่พัฒนาขึ้นมาเองโดยคนไทยแล้ว ภายในปีนี้ดิจิคราฟต์จะร่วมกับบริษัท ไซเบอร์ สเตป จำกัด (ประเทศญี่ปุ่น) เปิดเกมออนไลน์ ซี21 ซึ่งเป็นเกมที่มีรายละเอียดของเนื้อหา และได้รับความนิยมมากในต่างประเทศ และปีนี้ ดิจิคราฟต์ตั้งเป้ารายได้ 60 ล้านบาท

Now Thai politic reachs its hard time again. Now I'm tired everytime when I open TV and listen something; there're almost all bad news, argument, violence accident. However, I can't take my eyes out of it. This's my home, and we all have to think about solutions and do it, all of us.

Arrr, ok, let's blog something not so serious. Now I have a good time in learning Japanese language. I know more words, kenji and some form, "must" "please" "allow to" "can" "have ever" "I think (express opinion)" etc. Very Happy learning these things, it's very hard too (I study 4 hour per day, 6 day per week, exclude practising). Anyway, now I sometime can say some easy sentences in Japan without thinking :D and that's such a great feeling.

And sorry for my today English again, because it's long time since writing something in English. I've forgoten many grammar and form because of studying Japanese, not joking.

Tears of the Black Tiger (2000): 4.5/5

Tears of the Black Tiger had me at the opening credits (not to mention the movie's title alone). It certainly is a unique movie, being a Thai western cult melodrama fused with stylized color-flustereded scenes and awesome, absurd imagery. With horrible acting and extremely laughable dialogue, 'Black Tiger' is consistently awkward and corny, and knowing that it's the kind of movie that doesn't take itself seriously makes it all the more endearing. If you ever get a hold of a copy, take note that this wonderful piece of bizarre cinema is meant to be a FUN film. Nitpickers stay away haha this one's for keeps.

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat vowed to continue his work as premier and added that he has no intentions of dissolving  parliament despite the political riots that broke out several times in Bangkok on October 7.

"While I am taking this post, I will not stop my work," PM Somchai was quoted as saying.

He also said it is now not necessary to impose an emergency decree in the capital.

PM Somchai’s announcement was made few hours after Deputy Prime Minister General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh had tendered his resignation, taking responsibility for the police’s use of force and tear gas on anti-government protesters, injuring 190 people.-

Personally, foodcourts tend to confuse potential customers with billions of choices at affordable prices. At times, I really hate it. It drives me crazy. And also, how do these places come up with all these ideas and fit so many pictures in one menu. But, rest assure, Newmarket Plaza is a milder version. There is no overkill of choices, still plenty but not unreasonable like some places *ahem* CBD *ahem*.

LAKSA HOUSE

This is a Malaysian place - two things tend to be quite popular here. The Hainanese Chicken Rice and Hokkien Mee (based on observation). I've tried the chicken rice and it's fantastic. I haven't tried the Hokkien mee yet. Occassionally I try the other stuff, for example, the Kueh Tieu Mee shown below. This dish costs me $9.50 I believe.

Personally, I would recommend the chicken rice, and the rice noodle dishes i.e. kueh tieu mee, wat tan hor and char kueh tieu. They've also got curry chicken on rice and curry laksa noodle soup, but I haven't tried them in a while. My rating? Based on the recent dishes I had here - it's an 8/10. It's very nice and you'd expect to pay $10.

PASSION FOOD

This place has a Hong Kong flair to it - dead poultry hanging for all to see. It's hard to notice this place because they are the odd one out, hiding in the corner on the way to the toilet. One thing you have to try is the combination rice. You're thinking *yawn* combo rice again!? But hey, I love that stuff.  Remember that it's not listed in the menu (only one meat with rice is listed). But just ask for it i.e. a two combo rice. Not surprisingly, my favourite is the BBQ pork and soya chicken. For this post, I tried the roast duck and soya chicken. Again, a fantastic combo and it's cheap! Around $10 only.

Hard to rate this place. It may be difficult to eat the meat dishes because of the bones etc. But there is no complaints from my side. The standard rating, 8/10. You ain't gonna be disappointed. If so, let me know!

NEW VILLAGE KOREAN FOOD

You can't go wrong with Spicy Pork on Rice at this Korean place. $10 is the price you pay for most of the dish, and it usually comes with three side dishes and a soup. Magnifique! On a different occassion, we bought two dishes (BBQ Chicken and Dolsot Bibimbap), and they gave 5 different side dishes! That's generous!!

New Village rocks because of their generosity. The bibimbap and bbq dishes are my recommendations. The serving size is also large. My rating for this place is 9/10. It's got flavour, variety and all for $10 (usually).

SILK THAI

I have almost no recollection of this dish but it's that Thai place. It's not particularly popular for some reason. Maybe because they're not noisy enough and don't have big flames in the kitchen. I've tried one of their curry dish below, I think it's mango curry or something. Silk Thai has come a long way, about a year ago, they were severely lacking in appeal. I think they probably got a marketing guy to help them out and I think it helps. They've got pictures now and the food looks good.

From memory, the curry dish is reasonable (curry soup didn't look "curry-ish" enough, as if they put lots of cornflour). Other than that, no issue whatsoever. Also, I've tried the satay chicken before, and it's what I would recommend as a side dish. Price wise, I have almost no recollection.

A rating would be unfair as I only have one single dish reviewed, and I don't even know the name of it. But, Silk Thai offers an alternative to its high-performing neighbours (New Village, Passion Food and Laksa House). Thai always seems to be a "Kiwi" favourite and perhaps they're taking advantage of it.

BAR IN THE CAFE

I had a post about this place a couple of months ago - just for one drink! The Asian Coffee is highly recommended by me.  Seriously, don't buy those sugary bottled drinks, try the fresh sugary coffee instead. If it's too hot, get the iced version - the Iced Asian Coffee is only $4. It's like the funky Asian version of the Starbucks Frappuccino.

If you want to rate this place, it's hard. For bottled drinks, it's not worth rating. For desserts, I've never tried it. For the fresh coffee, damn good! 9/10!

My friends, overall this is my pathetic attempt to do a bundled "foodcourt" review. It's hard because I can't seem to remember prices and things like that - so prefer one off visits. But if you have comments, please feel free to make them!

The Newmarket Plaza - it has variety, it is affordable and depending on which dish you choose, you can get a fantastic meal (and drink).

Reached SFO around 9pm and was very hungry. So skipped the short listed names and asked the cabbie if she knew a good Thai place around. Thai is usually my safe bet - you really can't go wrong with the simple Panang curry and a spicy fish. She recommended 'Osha'.

It was around 10:00 when we entered the place. It seemed full for a week night, but we were lucky to get a table quickly.

We went through the menu - there were plenty of options to choose from. But we could taste only two dishes between two of us as the quantity is good for two. We ordered a mussels dish for appetizer (don't remember the exact name and it is not there on the website menu. I guess it is a seasonal dish). The mussels were perfectly cooked and the sauce was tangy. Next was Osha's sea. Lots of seafood in thick curry. It had a lots of seafood including crab legs, clams, mussels, salmon, calamari, prawns, scallops etc. The curry was delicious. I would have loved it little spicier, but then again, it was pretty good the way it was.

Overall experience very good - not too expensive, tasty food and classy ambiance. I would definitely go back if I got a chance. Note that there are multiple locations in SFO.

What blew us away when we sat down was the 1980s vintage chairs and tables. I love wood veneer on tables! A nice guy wearing an apron seated us by nodding towards a table and gave us our menus. He then poured us water. Then he went into the kitchen and started cooking. Interesting. A hostess, a server, AND the cook. I only saw one other person in the kitchen who was presumably his wife. I believe she was the prep cook.

I had a nasty cold during my vacation so I decided that a hot and spicy soup would help clear my sinuses. This is the Phnom Penh Soup (chicken, green curry, eggplant, mushroom, coconut milk, basil with rice) for $7.95. It was absolutely fantastic. It wasn't just green curry soup. It was not too oily, reasonably spicy, very clear in flavour, and a rich mixtures of textures. I loved this soup. 

A disappointing phad thai (fried noodles Thai style, fried tofu, green onion, tomato, cocumer, and roasted peanuts) for $6.95. It was not particularly peanuty, sour, or spicy. It tasted essentially like fried noodles with some vegetables thrown in. This is the second time that I have had this style of phad thai (I had it once at Phnom-Penh on King Street). Maybe I just don't like the Cambodian take on this dish.

This was the dish that was recommended to me by Justin. This is the Golden Chicken (spicy hot and sour chicken, peanut, lemon grass with rice) for $7.95. I really liked this dish. You got a lot of chicken! The flavour was very nicely peanuty (a contrast from the disappointing phad thai above) and also had quite a significant amount of zing. I ended up removing some of the peppers from the dish (I felt ashamed, I am such a wuss). Compared to Cambodiana, I liked this one a lot more. My only concern that it was fairly oily.

This is the Kako Khmer (chicken, green papaya, green jack fruit, green chili, eggplant, long bean and rice) for $7.95. A very interesting dish. A bit unorganized in its flavours. The jack fruit was surprising. I liked the Golden Chicken more but this was a nice dish to mix it up a little. It could've used a bit more colour. A red pepper perhaps? Ok, that sounded snobby but I just thought this dish was quite green.

Overall, Royal Angkor really delivered on value. Some of the dishes were obvious misses (the phad thai was forgettable) but there were obvious winners (the Phnom Penh soup and Golden Chicken notably). Our 4 dishes cost us under 30 dollars including tax and tip. Simply amazing. If you are hungry and poor, you have to come here!
