I made fancy turkey burgers and garlic bread buns.  She and I could see the fireworks over the East River from her roof and we watched zombie movies and the first two seasons of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.  I feel stupid for having totally missed out on that show.  Season 3 is on DVD September 9th I think, and Season 4 starts on FX September 13th or so.

Next weekend's Hellboy II: The Golden Army followed by one of the HOT WATER MUSIC reunion shows, at Terminal 5.  With Paint It Black and Thursday.  I'm so fucking excited.

The 14th I'm leaving for Greece for 10 days and won't really have internet access, my friends Leo and Eleni are getting married in "the homeland".  Not that anyone cares, just figured I'd mention it.

Above: Diopside or tremolite, I cant remember which, but I found it at this amazing road cutting near Wilberforce.

As I have mentioned in prevoius posts, I have a book that is in with a publisher right now - its huge and will have to be trimmed down if they want to publish it. The following is an extract from my chapter on finding gem diopside crystals in Ontario ...

"According to Chris Fouts, the main face of the cutting is a pyroxenite skarn cut by coarse-grained calcite veins. The really impressive crystals occur right along the contact between the country rock and the intruding calcite veins.

No doubt, this advice is true, but as my friend, the proprietor of Starlite Gems in Wilberforce told me, the best place to dig is in the dirt right below the tree roots. Apparently last year ambitious collectors knocked over four big trees around the lip of the exposure. Chief amongst those trees was a birch whose roots had clutched several translucent tremolite crystals, some of the blocks as big as a quart of milk and "as green as grass”, he told us. He rummaged in a grubby box that he kept beneath the counter, tossing aside lesser specimens and finally, with a triumphant grin producing a sizeable spike of deep green tremolite. “I was up there a couple of weeks ago and I found this in the dirt beside the road.”

I was amazed by the discovery and even more surprised when he agreed to sell it for $5. Apparently the best diopside and tremolite crystals are buried beneath the road. It supposedly shears off the top of several calcite veins.

This exciting find, tossed aside with so little regard, suggested the existence of far more spectacular treasures somewhere under the forest floor. It set me off in a fever of poking and scavenging. I had been unable to find the toppled birch of which I had heard but I burrowed deep into the sand, further undermining the already tenuous placement of the trees on the forest side of the ridge".

What does "underground" really mean? Is it defined by the number of people listening to the bands, or by the prospect of becoming well known? The latter means that a band might deliberately want to be underground and, therefore, do not pursue a contract with a record company. Whether or not a band is signed is crucial in terms of how much underground that band is. Record companies are utility maximisers and are interested in promoting their bands the best way possible. Hence a band, regardless of how good or bad it is, once signed has the prospects of becoming known because record companies have methods to achieve it. A record company might call itself an indie company or whatever, but has various reasons to earn more. For instance a record company that produces or distributes "anarchist" hardcore punk bands like Tragedy, or Aus Rotten and so on, is probably interested in making them known because that will alow it to sign and produce more bands that will allow them to spread the message to the world. So, if a band gets signed it is potentially a mainstream band. However, there are record companies that are unable to promote their bands or that go bankrupt. So their bands might not make it to the mainstream even though they might want to.

Of course there is Mainstream and mainstream! The Dead Kennedys are mainstream, but Michael Jackson is Mainstream of gigantic proportions. So, a definition of mainstream should take into account the extent (how many countries) and depth (how many people). Michael Jackson would be at the higher rank of the mainstream scale, with both qualities high and Dead Kennedys would be in a lower rank with the the "extent" quality equally high but the "depth" quality significantly lower! A band that belongs to the lowest ranks with both qualities really low could be considered as "underground". Enters the internet...

As I pointed out earlier, the record company is a decisive factor in making a band or a scene mainstream. The bands that do not make it to be mainstream is because of bad promotion of the record company or because they do not pursue a contract. The internet together with people's need to be defined by others can change all of this.

It has always been usual for teenagers to define themselves through the kind of music they listen to. There have always been kids that were standing out in their school or town as those who "new the most" about the kind of music they fancied. Some kids had older siblings that introduced them to the basics and gave them an edge, the initial advantage that allowed them to become more "specialised" in the genre faster than the others. Through a snowballing process, whereby the "thanx lists" of the various bands introduced to new bands, some kids were gradually leaving the mainstream behind and discovering the more "underground" bands.

In general, people feel good if they feel that they are part of the few "enlightened". Let us Imagine a band that is actually at the lowest level of the mainstream scale. Then imagine someone who is really proud of knowing that band and makes a video to post on Youtube with, for example, the "Best Death Metal Albums of all time". From the moment the post is on, the formerly unknown band is days away from becoming mainstream. Because Youtube is accessible at many countries (extend) and by many people (depth). Moreover, most of the viewers will feel that they are not cool for not knowing that band, which is considered to be "cult" and will do anything to familiarise themselves with it!

Thus, internet and people's need to feel special mark the end of the underground.

So I was browsing some videos, and I came across this one called "Covert Hypnosis". Now, I know a little bit about hypnosis and one of the "cardinal rules" is that you can't be hypnotized unless you want to. So I blew this off almost as fast as I read it. Especially when I went to the website and it was one of those "submit your email here" to learn more type of things

*Then I watched the video* and my opinion changed almost immediatly. Did the hypnosis work on me? Hmm..

I felt quite enlightened after watching this video, though I'm not sure I would call it hypnosis, as much as manipulation. I know it has happened to me. I would get all frustrated about something (or someone) and walk in to talk to him/her about it. Within 20 minutes I would start feeling re-assured and better so I would walk back to my desk. Then 20 minutes after that I would think, wait a minute - what just happened here? Not only did I not get my problem resolved, I was actually "made" to feel better about the bad situation I was in. Has this ever happened to you?

Maybe it's just natural charm, or maybe it's something else - I'm not sure. Some people definitly have an uncanny ability to convince others of total hogwash. After watching this video I can see more clearly now how it is they do it. Perhaps it is not intentional, perhaps they can't explain how they do it, but they do. It does seem we can be influenced (unconsiously?)

I suppose if you are unaware you are doing this - it is somewhat acceptable as natural charisma, but if you know you are doing this to someone, actively manipulating them to get what you want is it really ethical? and is there anyway to defend against it.

I suppose, when I think about it, this type of thing is everywhere, mostly in advertising and is similar to propaganda. In the end You'll have to decide for yourself./P

Connolly was born without legs. His work is on display under the name "The Rolling Exhibition," and it features photos he took while traversing the globe on a skateboard. The photos are all taken at ground level and offer a completely different perspective on the realm of every day life.

The best photographers are made by their instinctive eye for what people consider aesthetically pleasing. You can lead hundreds to a beautiful landscape, but it's the individuals who can get a sense of how to capture and retain that beauty on film (or on pixels) that are the true artists in photography. Photography is all about perspective; it's being able to create something tangible in a fraction of a second that only you can see and being skilled enough to convince others of the beauty or importance of that perspective - that shot - simply by putting it on display. Connolly's work is a basic expression of that intrinsic element of art in photography. Almost everyone who will view Connolly's photos have absolutely no idea what it's like to live without legs. And yet, with a quick, in-motion photo of passing strangers, Connolly manages to sum up book-loads of personal experience in an aesthetic light that can make anyone with a degree of imagination find resonance and the human experience in his art.

Perspective is a driving force behind emo. True, all art expresses some general form of perspective, but emo is the form of music where many artists seek to make individual perspectives a tangible reality for people who haven't had the experiences that formulated the driving force of the music and culture. It's not an empathetic form of art, but it's not far off. The reason emo was such a force within the underground for over two decades was the fact that the music sought to connect individuals of different backgrounds through positive, personal music that created an omniscient perspective. It created communities, which are the foundations of the underground in America. And underground communities in America are the breeding grounds for underground cultures.

And with such a vast opportunity of perspectives that can be tossed in the heap, and with the vast amount of different perspectives across the United States, emo became a mutated force of underground culture in different parts of this vast union. It will always be tied to post-hardcore, it will always be tied to its DC roots, and it will always be tied to a sense of yearning towards a goal. And that sense of yearning is mostly where the lineages of emo differentiate. With the Revolution Summer of 1985 (otherwise known as the birth of emo) the various acts that constituted for emo wrote about a multitude of ideas in blanketed terms in order to reach out to all sorts of individuals; from the staunch politics of Beefeater, to the introverted anguish of Embrace, to the general struggle with the individual of Rites of Spring, emo at its beginnings covered the ideological bases. Let's not forget Fugazi, who took the aesthetic elements of the Revolution Summer acts and blasted them off in profound new directions; their work made the most plight-filled perspectives seem like a reality by addressing taboo subjects with an empathetic sense of humanity. Everything from AIDS ("Give Me The Cure") to gentrification ("Cashout") to gun violence ("Repeater") was addressed with a profound and omniscient voice that opened listeners to near-alien perspectives and experiences and made them as important issues as ones personally affecting the individual.

So how did emo go from there to here? How did politics diverge into puppy-love? Well, it's not that simple; to say that politics doesn't exist in emo anymore is a bold-faced lie. Hell, Fugazi kept churning out records well into the new millennium, and you can't forget Billboard chart-toppers Thursday when discussing politics and emo in the same breath. And aspects of love and romance were well a part of emo from the beginning; Rites of Spring's music, though perpetually vague in context and up to the listener to discern the meaning for themselves, did sometimes concern aspects of romantic love.

But, as far as the songs about love, or lost love, or as some would go as far to say (and in some cases, correctly) near-hatred towards the opposite sex, the answer is simple: it's all about perspective. Love is a concept that every human being on the planet can relate to. Outside of the survival needs for shelter and sustenance, love is a concept that is basically universal. Everyone has experienced it in some capacity, be it romantically or otherwise. And it's fair to say everyone has experienced their fare share of rejection. And it's all about how we deal with it. The most perplexing thing about the projection of emo in recent years isn't the obsession with love. It's the obsession with negativity broiled in rejection. From its beginning, emo was created with the idea to make something constructive, build something new and positive after the wreckage of the hardcore community that those who became involved in the "emo" scene had experienced (their rejection, in some capacity, involved in punk).

Yet, today, so many emo acts revel in dread. Again, not a new concept or perspective; if there's anything as old as love, it's depression (or a mild form of it). But why the fascination with such negativity? It's impossible to pinpoint one thing, but it is representative of something fairly circular within pop music; every so often, the mood of pop music flows from positivity to negativity. With so many sub-genres and categories of pop pushed onto consumers at any one point, its interesting to see different musics produce different emotional output at the same time. You can't forget the brooding darkness of the 80s when post-punk and goth were all the rage and hardcore bristled with anger in the underground; then again, happy-sounding music dominated the pop-charts, with everything from Madonna to Bobby Mcferrin ("Don't Worry Be Happy") supported Regan's 50s style American dream image.

Whatever the case may be, be it the fact that loss of romantic love is the only ailment and perspective that can incite anything aside from apathy in well-to-do teenagers anymore, or the fact that modern music is a circular and uncontrollable beast, it is interesting to note the vast expanse of, well, emotions that fill the map of pop music today.

And so, on our nation's birthday, I ask to keep perspective in mind. It's our individual perspectives that make us unique, that attract us to other like-minded souls, and that separate us along various ideological lines. But we're all human, no matter what perspective we may have. Happy Birthday America!

Bon, je l'avoue ici, je connaissais un des gars du band il fut un temps. Et depuis, bien oui, je les suis. Et je les trouve bons! Que voulez-vous? C'est de la pop accrocheuse, même notre cher Perez Hilton aime et en a parler sur son blog! Alors pourquoi pas moi?

Je les ai vu sur scène, il y a deux ans. Électrisant! De l'énergie à ne plus finir: la salle au grand complet dansait!

Et je peux croire qu'il en est de même aujourd'hui. Je peux dire qu'ils ont fait du chemin, avant le son était vraiment plus indie. Pour les amateurs de bars de Montréal, ils se tenaient au Jupiter Room (et moi aussi d'ailleurs) à l'épo

que des toilettes qui coulaient sur le plancher de danse. Quand c'était encore un peu miteux et tellement hipster!

Bref, écoutez donc pour jugez vous même. Mais moi, on ne me l'enlevera jamais, leur son me ramène automatiquement à mes 16-17 ans!

dan bukan hanya di studio2 musik saja yg saya temukan sebuah ketidak adilan ini,di acara2 festival pun sering saya melihat bahkan merasakan penolakan2 terhadap semua jenis musik underground dalam formulir pendaftarannya.

sampai sekarang tak ada jawaban dari masalah ini yg sangat membingungkan saya. APAKAH PENYEBABNYA?!

Reality Films

Philip Gardiner's Diary of a Vampire provides an intriguing glimpse into the world of Bram Stoker, the Irish author of Dracula (1897).

As possible influences on Stoker's work the film looks at European history, Freemasonry, Asian mysticism, mythology, the esoterica of Madame Blavatsky and her disagreement with the German religion scholar, Max Müller.

Much visual and narrative emphasis is given to the idea that, in contrast to the scathing account given in the biblical Book of Genesis, the serpent represents sexual energy that may be transformed into spiritual power--i.e. the kundalini and the seven chakras.

Whether or not this kind of subtle power is healthy, hypnotic or perhaps even manipulative is left to open debate.

The film's treatment of the serpent is further developed by mention of the Christian belief that, as a symbol of evil, the snake is something to be overcome through intercessory prayer and, in the past, abject violence.

Dracula, then, is taken as a symbol for the English fear of esoteric cults during a time that saw a subtle resurgence of the ongoing conflict between the 'Christian West' and 'Pagan East.'

To its credit, this thoughtful and well-researched film asks which side Stoker is on, or whether he is merely observing and inadvertently encouraging a nascent consciousness shift that culminates in a full-fledged Gothic revival during the Victorian age.

Diary of a Vampire is highly recommended for those interested in the ongoing tensions and ambiguities found among Christian and non-Christian beliefs, especially with regard to the Victorian era and the esoteric, occult and underground influences of that period.

On my hunt for zircon in the Bancroft area I managed to find this old mine that had reputedly unearthed some pretty interesting mineral specimens - many of which were said to be radioactive - some of which are reported to have been zircon. Being a gemmologist I was interested to see the crystals, by my experience zircon crystals are generally box shaped with 4 sided pyramids at either end. "A doubly terminated tetragonal prism," as the lingo describes it.

From my book that is still as of yet unpublished I provide the following extract ...

"In 1955 a pit known as the “Blue Rock Cerium Shaft” was sunk in the bush to the south of Tory Hill. It dropped down to 440 feet, with three levels at 100, 250 and 400 feet.

There is apparently an adit somewhere nearby that leads down to the 100-foot level but I was unable to find it. The No. 1 shaft is about a kilometer and a half to the north, it was 657 feet deep with 4 different levels. “Lead Ura Mines” which later became the “Rare Earth Mining Company” initially explored the No. 1 pit in 1948. No commercial production was ever drawn from either of the “Rare Earth” sites but the legacy of that unsuccessful enterprise still haunts the bush making for an exciting day of discovery.

James and I wandered around the hillside wondering how the mine had appeared and where the head frame was situated. Eastern Hemlock and cedar had shrouded the already decaying concrete abutments and we trod carefully through the waist-high bush not wanting to find ourselves plunging down a hidden pit into the bowels of the earth.

As it turned out a huge concrete slab capped the shaft. James pointed to the cast iron hoops set within. It suggested the option of future removal if the company so desired. There was a small opening at one edge of the concrete slab and I tossed a rock through it. The stone bounced and boomed for six seconds before I heard a great hollow splash".
