With around 400,000 adverts listed on Auto Trader it’s hardly surprising some very interesting cars find their way into our classifieds.

But there was still a real buzz in the editorial team office this week when we spotted there was a 253mph Bugatti Veyron for sale on Auto Trader for the first time with an incredible price tag of £1,050,000.

Earlier this year we advertised an SSC Ultimate Aero TT, the model which stole the Veyron’s crown and became the world’s fastest car with an official top speed of 257mph.

And, amongst the thousands of Volkswagen Golfs and BMW 3-Series you can also find cars like the Aston Martin Vanquish S and Koenigsegg CCX ready to pounce.

Think there is a huge waiting list for the Audi R8 supercar?

If you fancy buying a nearly new example Auto Trader currently has 78 cars listed.

And it’s not just nearly-new cars which take our interest. Take a look at our articles about the iconic Bugatti EB110 and Ferrari F40s we’ve had for sale.

Searching for interesting and exotic cars is an addictive business. Have you found anything which caught your eye?

The Bugatti Veyron is every guy's dream. Its absolutely monstrous engine delivers power unlike that of any other street-legal car. I thought I'd collect some information from around the web about this kick-ass ride. And some pictures over which you can drool, of course.

987 Horsepower

249 mph Top Speed

2.46 seconds 0-60 mph

10.2 seconds quarter mile

11.7 mpg mixed

You can probably tell that the interior of this machine does not waste space and sort of puts you into the future. Well, at least it looks really damn cool. The Veyron is named after a 1920's racecar driver running for the Bugatti team. You can tell it's racing pedigree from the dial placement and structure. There is a two-tone interior leather package available. The car has 3700 assembly parts, and the interior reflects the sophisticated nature of the engineering and design of this wonderful (but INSANE) car.

The top speed, as proven in the video below, is 253 mph.

I don't know how many of you have seen or heard about Top Gear, the BBC production that is pretty much the best car-show EVER made. Seriously, check them out on youtube . They do everything with cars that you'd want to, and so many cool projects that you could never come up with yourself. And they're hilarious. Anyway, here's Jeremy Clarkson (one of the 3 hosts) reviewing the Veyron, from Times Online:

When you push a car past 180mph, the world starts to get awfully fizzy and a little bit frightening. When you go past 200mph it actually becomes blurred. Almost like you’re trapped in an early Queen pop video. At this sort of speed the tyres and the suspension are reacting to events that happened some time ago, and they have not finished reacting before they’re being asked to do something else. The result is a terrifying vibration that rattles your optical nerves, causing double vision. This is not good when you’re covering 300ft a second.

Happily, stopping distances become irrelevant because you won’t see the obstacle in the first place. By the time you know it was there, you’ll have gone through the windscreen, through the Pearly Gates and be half way across God’s breakfast table.

It has always been thus. When Louis Rigolly broke the 100mph barrier in his Gobron in 1904, the vibration would have been terrifying. And I dare say that driving an E-type at 150mph in 1966 must have been a bit sporty as well.

But once you go past 200mph it isn’t just the suspension and the tyres you have to worry about. The biggest problem is the air. At 100mph it’s relaxed. At 150mph it’s a breeze. But at 200mph it has sufficient power to lift an 800,000lb jumbo jet off the ground. A 200mph gust of wind is strong enough to knock down an entire city. So getting a car to behave itself in conditions like these is tough.

At 200mph you can feel the front of the car getting light as it starts to lift. As a result you start to lose your steering, so you aren’t even able to steer round whatever it is you can’t see because of the vibrations. Make no mistake, 200mph is at the limit of what man can do right now. Which is why the new Bugatti Veyron is worthy of some industrial strength genuflection. Because it can do 252mph. And that’s just mad — 252mph means that in straight and level flight this car is as near as makes no difference as fast as a Hawker Hurricane.

You might point out at this juncture that the McLaren F1 could top 240mph, but at that speed it was pretty much out of control. And anyway it really isn’t in the same league as the Bugatti. In a drag race you could let the McLaren get to 120mph before setting off in the Veyron. And you’d still get to 200mph first. The Bugatti is way, way faster than anything else the roads have seen.

Of course, at £810,000, it is also jolly expensive, but when you look at the history of its development you’ll discover it’s rather more than just a car . . .

It all started when Ferdinand Piëch, the swivel-eyed former boss of Volkswagen, bought Bugatti and had someone design a concept car. “This,” he said, “is what the next Bugatti will look like.” And then, without consulting anyone, he went on. “And it vill have an engine that develops 1000 horsepower and it vill be capable of 400kph.”

His engineers were horrified. But they set to work anyway, mating two Audi V8s to create an 8 litre W16. Which was then garnished with four turbochargers. Needless to say, the end result produced about as much power as the earth’s core, which is fine. But somehow the giant had to be cooled, which is why the Veyron has no engine cover and why it has 10 — count them — 10 radiators. Then things got tricky because the power had to be harnessed.

For this, VW went to Ricardo, a British company that makes gearboxes for various Formula One teams.

“God, it was hard,” said one of the engineers I know vaguely. “The gearbox in an F1 car only has to last a few hours. Volkswagen wanted the Veyron’s to last 10 or 20 years. And remember, the Bugatti is a damn sight more powerful than any F1 car.”

The result, a seven-speed double-clutch flappy paddle affair, took a team of 50 engineers five years to perfect.

With this done, the Veyron was shipped to Sauber’s F1 wind tunnel where it quickly became apparent that while the magic 1000bhp figure had been achieved, they were miles off the target top speed of 400kph (248mph). The body of the car just wasn't aerodynamic enough, and Volkswagen wouldn’t let them change the basic shape to get round the problem.

The bods at Sauber threw up their hands, saying they only had experience of aerodynamics up to maybe 360kph, which is the effective top speed in Formula One. Beyond this point Bugatti was on its own.

Somehow they had to find an extra 30kph, and there was no point in looking to the engine for answers because each extra 1kph increase in speed requires an extra 8bhp from the power plant. An extra 30kph then would need an extra 240bhp. That was not possible.

The extra speed had to come from changing small things on the body. They started by fitting smaller door mirrors, which upped the top speed a bit but at too high a price. It turned out that the bigger ones had been keeping the nose of the car on the ground. Without them the stability was gone.

In other words, the door mirrors were generating downforce. That gives you an idea of how much of a bastard the air can be at this speed.

After some public failures, fires and accidents, and one chief being fired, they hit on the idea of a car that automatically changes shape depending on what speed you’re going.

At 137mph, the nose of the car is lowered by 2in and the big rear spoiler slides into the slipstream. The effect is profound. You can feel the back of the car being pressed into the road.

However, with the spoiler in place the drag is so great you’re limited to just 231mph. To go faster than that you have to stop and insert your ignition key in a slot on the floor. This lowers the whole car still further and locks the big back wing down. Now you have reduced downforce, which means you won’t be going round any corners, but you have a clean shape. And that means you can top 400kph. That’s 370ft a second.

You might want to ponder that for a moment. Covering the length of a football pitch, in a second, in a car. And then you might want to think about the braking system. A VW Polo will generate 0.6g if you stamp on the middle pedal hard. You get that from the air brake alone on a Veyron. Factor in the carbon ceramic discs and you will pull up from 250mph in just 10sec. Sounds good, but in those 10sec you’ll have covered a third of a mile. That’s five football pitches to stop.

I didn’t care. On a recent drive across Europe I desperately wanted to reach the top speed but I ran out of road when the needle hit 240mph. Where, astonishingly, it felt planted. Totally and utterly rock steady. It felt sublime.

Not quiet, though. The engine sounds like Victorian plumbing — it looks like Victorian plumbing as well, to be honest — and the roar from the tyres was biblical. But it still felt brilliant. Utterly, stunningly, mind blowingly, jaw droppingly brilliant.

And then I reached the Alps where, unbelievably, it got better. I expected this road rocket to be absolutely useless in the bends but it felt like a big Lotus Elise.

Occasionally, if I accelerated hard in a tight corner, it behaved strangely as the four-wheel-drive system decided which axle would be best equipped to deal with the wave of power. I won’t say it’s a nasty feel or dangerous. Just weird, in the same way that the duck-billed platypus is weird.

You learn to raise an eyebrow at what’s only a foible, and then, as the road straightens out, steady yourself for Prince Albert’s boiler to gird its loins and play havoc with the space-time continuum. No, really, you come round a bend, see what appears to be miles and miles of dead straight road, bury your foot in the carpet and with a big asthmatic wheeze, bang, you’re instantly at the next bend, with your eyebrow raised again.

From behind the wheel of a Veyron, France is the size of a small coconut. I cannot tell you how fast I crossed it the other day. Because you simply wouldn’t believe me. I also cannot tell you how good this car is. I just don’t have the vocabulary. I just end up stammering and dribbling and talking wide-eyed nonsense. And everyone thinks I’m on drugs.

This car cannot be judged in the same way that we judge other cars. It meets drive-by noise and emission regulations and it can be driven by someone whose only qualification is an ability to reverse round corners and do an emergency stop. So technically it is a car. And yet it just isn’t.

Other cars are small guesthouses on the front at Brighton and the Bugatti is the Burj Al Arab. It makes even the Enzo and the Porsche Carrera GT feel slow and pointless. It is a triumph for lunacy over common sense, a triumph for man over nature and a triumph for Volkswagen over absolutely every other car maker in the world.

Depending on where you are in the United States, there’s several ways to dismiss a ticket. GetDefensive is a great way to take Defensive driving, it allows you to take the course from the comfort of your own home, and they’ll even email you your driver record and certificate to your home overnight. The course only take about six hours to complete, and you can do it all at once or in increments that suit you. They’re a great solution if you get a ticket in Texas. If you’re in another state, try GoToTrafficSchool. They offer Traffic school thats easy and fun. Well, just about as fun as Traffic school can be. If you’re learning to drive, take our Driver’s Education online course.

We know a situation such as this might be, and most likely will be MUCH different if you are in the states, However in the UK, you’d be looking at 3 points on your record and a fine that’s a mere droplet compared to what you paid for the car at £60 (about $120.)

We have two blokes to thank for these numbers, that were out for a little fun in Hampshire, UK. Attention was obviously brought to the two supercars stretching their legs, and a pursuit ensued. The BMW police car got up to 140mph chasing the two, when the Veyron decided to pull over, while the 599 kept going, and ultimately got away.

There is a huge demographic of people that will never have the chance to sit behind the wheel of the worlds greatest super cars. Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s, Aston Martin’s… they are ‘untouchable’ for the majority because they could simply not afford to buy or lease one. High end rental agencies are slowly bringing that opportunity to more and more people as they are becoming more widely available, easier to actually rent, and a greater variety of cars are being offered.

Up until late, the standard ‘baller’ cars that could be found on rental lots catering to those looking for something a little flashier and faster than the PT Cruiser, were the Ferrari 355 and the 360, and assortments of Porsche’s. That has changed quite a bit over the past year or so, we now have Lamborghini’s being offered, and not just the Gallardo either.

What is the price for incremental quality, and is it really worth it? How much is too much? What about when you can't even tell the difference; or perhaps even care to? To add to the confusion, what about marketing or celebrity appeal?

Well, sometimes it's not worth a damn - sometimes it's worth everything. It just depends on who you are. Either way, once you look into it, you won't see a thin veil of magic marketing and superficial shadows on the wall - you'll see a tremendous drive and passion for pushing the limits of the human experience.

The Taste

For some people, salt is just salt. It goes on sale occasionally at Albertsons for $0.04/oz. Well, this almost ubiquitous seasoning is also one of the most sought after seasonings in the world. Walk outside the US and It comes in almost a hundred different ways which can range from your traditional table salt by Morton ($0.06/oz.), to Camargue's Fleur de Sel from France at $2.16/oz. It can come from Peru, Hawaii, Himalayan, Maine, New Zealand, and all the various oceans, each finely gathered and closely guarded with their own distinct flavor. Try pouring Morton's on your $90 4 oz. Japanese Kobe beef and most likely the executive chef will chase you out with a butcher knife.

The Smell

Back when I worked at Starbucks, all employees are forced to go through coffee tastings to better understand, appreciate, and market the various types of coffee. The first eight coffees I had gone through had "it tastes like coffee" under the "taste" category, and "it smells like coffee" scrawled in the "smell" category. After about six more however, I started to notice subtle differences. Nut. Oak. Sweetness. Cherries? Apples? How does one pick up a cherry smell from a coffee bean is beyond me, but I swear it smells like cherries. For a step above, all you need to do is look to your local wine merchant for an even more intense and extreme form of olfactory sensory perception. The very best "winos" as we call them, can tell the grape of a foreign wine they've never had from just a brief whiff of the 'nose', some being able to even tell the year and vineyard in which the wine came from, with 99% accuracy. If they've had the wine before, the accuracy creeps closer to 100%.

The Sight

Back in the day, a black-and-white TV picking up basic channels out of the air was frighteningly "lifelike." Good enough? Hell no. If you compare an HD broadcast to an old TV on airwaves, the TV looks like a disgusting mess of scrambled eggs. The same goes with DVD and slightly less so, Blu-Ray. We've exponentially multiplied the number of pixels from 345,600 (old TV) to 2,073,600 (HDTV,1080p) in a single frame. Sure, HDTV looks great, but we haven't even scratched the surface of digital visual reproduction. When is it going to be enough? Researchers estimate that it'll take about 15,000,000 pixels to make it indistinguishable to the human eye...so...we have a ways to go.

The Sound

Take a standard pair of headphones such as say, the headphones on your iPod. Sure, they sound pretty good. You can hear the music right? Well, by audiophile standards, the standard iPod headphones are pretty horrendous in sound reproduction.

Take a quick peek around, and you'll find yourself easily forking over $80 to $120 for a decent pair of earbuds that will do your music justice. Right around there, you start running into your second barrier: the mp3 file sound quality. A standard mp3 comes in 128 to 192 kbps, but to really make use of your earbuds and push the limits of your iPod, you'll need to find a source cleaner than that. Getting a song encoded in 256 or 320 kbps is the first step, the next is lossless (i.e. FLAC), and for the hardcore, the old-school *.wav file that'll turn your normal 3.5 Mb file into a 44 Mb one.

Once you get a lossless album pumping through your iPod, you reach a third barrier: your headphones... again. Unless you're really attached to earbuds and don't mind paying up to $650 for custom earbuds perfectly molded specifically for your ear, you'll probably move on to full headphones called 'cans.' Strange sounding companies such as Grado and Sennheiser make studio or reference versions of these that cost upwards of $800. But just as you're feeling pretty good about your hard-core set of cans in your music backpack, you run into barrier number four: your iPod.

Your iPod is a pretty good at reproducing sound, but it's noisy due to it's compact circuitry and construction. To minimize this, you'll want to turn the volume to the absolute minimum, and then buy a high-quality amplifier that has less noise than your iPod. These amplifiers are slowly getting more portable, and start at around $200 and go easily into the thousands. The standard audiophile listening pack carries a high quality music source, a powered amplifier, and a good set of cans.

But eventually, even the minimum amount of noise on the iPod is just too much, and the reproduction isn't good enough...so you got to ditch it. This is where you hear people talking about how analogue sources such as record players "sound better" than digital sources such as CD players. Some hardcore audiophiles will go back and build their own fully insulated analogue players with vacuum tubes (because they sound better than today's transistors). As my college Physics TA once said, "normal hearing is around 20Hz-20kHz, so most sound devices shoot for this range. About 10% of the population can hear around 15hz-22KHz, and they will pay thousands of dollars for super-accurate hardware that will allow them to hear those ranges." For some, any pair of headphones or speakers will do - for others, the extra couple hundred dollars is completely worth it for audio nirvana.

The Speed

In this day and age, not many people ever need more than about 100 horsepower in a standard roadcar to safely maneuver their way to their destination. This includes accident avoidance, overtaking, and quick-starts off the shoulder. So why would anyone ever need 300 horsepower, which is standard on most $45,000 cars? It goes well beyond practicality and almost into bragging rights right? Well, for some, that sense of power is bit more sublime. The speed of a roadcar is akin to the pace of the human technological frontier. The passion and pursuit of speed is a bit like how you try to go higher and higher on a swing as a kid. It's not necessarily about bragging rights, it's just exhilarating in pushing the limits of yourself and the swing. Cars beyond $250,000 are not much more luxurious or comfortable than ones at $80,000. In fact, some are much less so. So what are you getting? It's this pursuit of speed that is so strong in us, it keeps companies such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Porsche in business. Think $250,000 is too much for a 640 horsepower Ferrari? Consider $1.4 million for a 1,001 horsepower Bugatti Veyron. And yes, they are street-legal, normal roadcars that you could use everyday.

Engineering is more than just solving problems. Engineering is solving problems with flair, with abi

Engineering is more than just solving problems. Engineering is solving problems with flair, with ability, with speed and with cunning. It is the practical application of science in design.

Take the Bugatti Veyron. For a short while, it was the world's fastest production car, with a top speed of 407km/h. The world went crazy. A month later, it was SSC Ultimate Aero with a top speed of 411km/h.

People immediately began forgetting about the Veyron, saying that it had been surpassed. What people were forgetting is the reason why the Veyron was so amazing. It wasn't the fact that it could do 407 km/h. It was that it could do 407km/h while having air conditioning, traction control, all-wheel drive, weighing about 2 tonnes, having a CD player, comfortable seats, easy torque curve and being simply a fantastic road car. Which the Aero isn't. Over 320km/h, it gets exponentially harder to get each successive km/h. Not only did Bugatti (effectively Volkswagen) manage to get their magnum opus to such a high speed, but do it with all of the above accruements, and do it comfortably and safely. That is why the Veyron is the engineering miracle that the Aero isn't. That's why it is up there with the Ford Model T and the Porsche 911 as cars that shouldn't work, but do.

For a list of the best engineered cars of the 20th century, check out the Automotive Engineering International website, which I will conveniently link to you with a differently coloured word.

Is a Bugatti Veyron better than a Pag

Is A Bugatti Veyron Better Than A Pagani Zonda?
By John Hartley

Is a Bugatti Veyron better than a Pagani Zonda? It depends what you mean by better. Sure it is faster and more expensive. In theory it is more exclusive, but in practice any of these exotic cars is so exclusive it does not matter. What about the Ferrari FXX - now that is so exclusive you can't drive it on the road.

If you want to accelerate faster than anyone else you don't need a Bugatti. There are other cheaper cars that do the job. The Ultima GTR is one, and the Caparo T1 will be another. Maybe the SSC Ultimate Aero TT is another.

The Bugatti Veyron gets to 100 mph in about 5.5 seconds – the actual figure varies according to who timed it. However, the Ultima GTR can reach 10 mph in 5.3 seconds which is blisteringly quick – that was timed independently.

The Pagani Zonda is not as quick as that, taking 2 seconds more than the Veyron to get to 124 mph (200 km/h).But believe me, for practical purposes there is very little difference between the performance of these cars. In real life, the difference is smaller because neither the Zonda nor Ultima have turbochargers, so when you press the accelerator you get instant response; with the Bugatti you will wait an instant for the turbos to cut in.

Sure, the Veyron looks and sounds different from other cars, and if you like the looks. well, go for it.

On the other hand if you want a car that accelerates, handles, is very fast, beautifully finished, and causes excitement wherever it goes you might go for a Pagani Zonda or another exotic car, like the Ascari KZ1 or Saleen S7. The Ultima is the world champion for out-and-out acceleration and braking.

All depends what you want it for. Me, I fancy a Pagani, although it is not the prettiest of cars, but it sure has fantastic presence on the road.

John Hartley is editor of http://www.fast-autos.com an online magazine devoted to fast cars and supercars, where you can read the latest articles about fast cars. He has written from many of the world's top auto magazines, and has written many books about cars and the auto industry, including 'Suspension and Steering Q&A' and 'The Electronics Revolution in the Motor Industry'.

I have a theory, and idea if you might. We all (car people) know about the phenominal might of the Bugatti veyron, the car that kills near-by animals with its jetstream - the car that displaced more air, faster than a whole bunch of fiumicino boys. But really despite the absolute finesse, skill and ability that has gone into the veyron the main ingreadient is power. To this end I am interested to complete a test, unfortunately I do not have the physics degree, cash or time to complete it but in theory whats stopping you getting 30 toyota celica engines and sticking them together. No1 has been mental enough to try such a feat but I am fairly sure you could show the veyron a thing or two - thats if you didnt have to worry about steering, staying alive or money!

ADDITIONAL FACT:

THE MERCEDES 35 HP was the first-ever fastest production car with a speed of 53 mph!!!

well it was the fastest in the year 1901....

Hence, the Enzo Ferrari isn't Turbo-charged and is the most powerful naturally aspirated (untrubocharged) street-legal production car (228.5 mph)
