Hello, faithful readers.

I've been learning lots about the internet in the past few weeks and I can't wait to share it with you. Just in the past few days I've started using some new services and I've also got something HUGE coming up next weekend. Here's what I hope to be blogging about in the coming weeks:

Social Median-- a social news network. I've heard good things about it and it seems like it could be really useful, but I'm still pretty confused by a lot of the features. I'll need to spend more time with it.

OtherInbox-- an email program that helps you sort all of your bacn. I just signed up earlier today so we'll have to see if this revolutionizes my email experience. Honestly, I'm concerned that I'll feel less popular if my gmail account isn't always as clutterd, but we'll have to wait and see.

Viddler-- a fun video site. (yes, I'm cautiously looking to start making a few videos!) I've never done any video before so I won't be able to compare it do other sites, but I picked Viddler because it seems like the most social video website I've seen. I love the way commenting works on Viddler.

PODCAMP PITTSBURGH!!!!!! I'll be there next weekend. Should be an incredible time :)

There's way too much awesomeness in the above mentioned topics for me to explore right now, but I'll be playing around w/ these things (or "at" in the case of PCPGH) and I'll let you know what I think!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok, ok... I know this was sort of a blog post about nothing, but I'm on social media overload at the moment and I wanted to let you know what I'm up to and what I'll be talking about... mostly so that I do eventually talk about them!
Cathedral Grove Logging Blocked by "Frogs" and "Mice"
Early Monday morning, Vancouver Islanders placed a symbolic roadblock
across an active logging road in Cathedral Grove next to MacMillan
Provincial Park. Volunteers with Friends of the Grove (FROG) warned
Island Timberlands contractors that others in the forest are prepared
to interfere with logging operations by playing "cat and mouse" with
the loggers.
Volunteer Seamus McCormack said the tree-cutting crew left the area at
9:30 am on Monday. "[The contractors] said they were just coming to
get their truck so we let them in. When they drove back out, they said
the company told them they are not going to log this block right now."
McCormack said it was not clear whether the company was pulling out
because of protests that began Sunday or for other reasons. The
volunteers will continue to guard Cathedral Grove, he said.
"Cat and mouse" is a civil disobedience tactic that involves slipping
into an area being logged, announcing one's presence, and disappearing
again. Fallers are required for safety reasons to stop work if
unauthorized people are in the area.
Meanwhile, the Western Canada Wilderness Committee (WCWC) a rally at
the Nanoose headquarters of Island Timberlands at 1420 Island Highway
starting at 11 am today. FROG and WCWC are demanding more protection
for the ancient cedars and firs at Cathedral Grove, and they denounced
Island Timberlands' plan to cut down the forests alongside the Cameron
River and MacMillan Provincial Park
MacMillan Park includes part of Cathedral Grove and some of the
largest trees remaining on Vancouver Island. The grove provides
habitat for Roosevelt elk and other rare species, but logging leaves
the giants vulnerable to blow-down and erosion.
In 2006, a two-year-long treesit defeated a provincial plan to build
roads, parking lots, and trails through Cathedral Grove. A BC Supreme
Court justice declined to issue a court order to remove protestors
camped out in the treetops, and the province eventually scrapped the
parking lot plan.
The Nature Trust of BC is negotiating with Island Timberlands to
acquire another section of the ancient forest grove adjacent to the
park.
(The article, though entertaining, is misleading, as it declares the death of redwood treesitting. Not so, says Humboldt Forest Defenders read this comment on the misleading article below.)
EVELYN NIEVES, Associated Press
SCOTIA, Calif. (AP) - After more than 20 years of protests, the last two people living in the giant redwoods of Northern California were climbing down for good, convinced by the new owners of the forest they would spare the ancient trees from the saw.
Still, the tree sitters looked rather lost.
Having lived nearly 200 feet off the ground for 11 months, Nadia Berg - who calls herself “Cedar” - seemed unsure of her footing on the lush forest floor of Humboldt County’s Nanning Creek grove.
Cedar had turned into a tree dweller in “Grandma,” a massive, double redwood conjoined at the base. She had grown accustomed to the whistles and whispers and ways of the woods. Now, it was time to come back to earth.
“Being here, for me, hasn’t been a sacrifice,” said the 22-year-old Alberta native, still in her harness after rappelling down Grandma for the last time. “I feel so honored that I could be here for the trees.”
Berg’s neighbor, Billy Stoetzer, came down last week after living for nearly a year in a hammock-like shelter in “Spooner,” a 300-foot-tall mammoth at least 1,500 years old. The 22-year-old from the Missouri Ozarks said he might delay his final departure for a week.
But the exact timing of the tree-sitters’ departure hardly matters here. What does matter is that the great timber wars of the North Coast are over.
So quietly did the truce happen that almost no one involved can believe it. But the drawn out, sometimes violent, battles between Pacific Lumber Company, the largest private owner of old-growth redwoods, and environmental activists who flocked here to save the trees, are history. Pacific Lumber has new owners, a new name, Humboldt Redwood Co., and a new pledge to protect organisms that have been alive since B.C.
The end began a few weeks ago, when Michael Jani, the president and chief forester of the new Humboldt Redwood Company, hiked into the woods to meet the tree-sitters.
“I went out, looked at the trees, looked at the stand of trees that were around them and I explained to them that under our policy, we would not be cutting those trees,” said Jani, a 35-year veteran of logging companies.
Protecting old-growth trees was part of the plan that Humboldt Redwood, largely owned by Don and Doris Fisher of The Gap Inc., submitted to acquire Pacific Lumber in bankruptcy court. It also pledged to avoid cutting down trees in vast swaths, or clear-cutting, a practice that the timber giant had aggressively practiced under its previous owner, Maxxam Inc.
Since the owners of Humboldt Redwood had a track record - a 10-year history as owners of the Mendocino Redwood Company, one county away - environmentalists are cautiously optimistic that it will do as it promises, including sparing any redwood born prior to 1800 with a diameter of at least four feet.
So for weeks, the tree-sitters at the Nanning Creek and Fern Gully groves, where Pacific Lumber timber harvest plans had ancient trees on the chopping block, have been clearing out their encampments, removing their platforms and figuring out what to do with the rest of their lives.
“At this point, I’d like to focus on growing a garden,” said Rudi Bega, as in “rutabaga.” The 28-year-old Idahoan, who also goes by the name Lodgepole, is an 11-year veteran of the timber wars. He co-founded We Save Trees, a descendant of Earth First!, to recruit, train and organize tree-sitters. A few years ago, he organized nearly 30 simultaneous tree-sits in five watersheds.
The last tree-sitters and their “bottom liners,” or support crews, know that mere timing has cast them in the limelight. Since tree-sitting as a long-range protest began here in the late 1980s, scores of activists have descended here to take turns squatting in the redwoods, and hundreds more have helped them from the ground.
And tree-sits were just part of the fight that began almost as soon as Texas financier Charles Hurwitz, chairman of Maxxam, Inc. acquired Pacific Lumber with junk bonds in 1986.
Blockades of logging trucks, sit-ins at company offices, lawsuits by environmental groups and rallies attended by tens of thousands of protesters, were part of the mix.
Several battles made international headlines. They included the 1990 car bombing of Earth First! Leaders Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney; the pepper spray swabbing of protesters’ eyes by Humboldt County sheriffs in 1997; the 1998 death of an activist, David “Gypsy” Chain, killed by a tree cut by an enraged logger; the marathon two-year tree-sit by Julia “Butterfly” Hill that ended in 1999; and the buying of 10,000 acres of the Headwaters Forest from Pacific Lumber by the state and federal governments in 1999.
The car bombing put the timber wars on the map. Cherney and Bari were driving in Oakland, recruiting volunteers for planned protests they dubbed “Redwood Summer,” when a bomb exploded under the front seat of their car, shattering Bari’s pelvis. Oakland police and the F.B.I. accused them of trying to transport the bomb for ecoterrorism.
Twelve years later, in 2002, five years after Bari died of cancer, the pair won $4.4 million in a federal civil suit; a jury agreed their civil rights had been violated and their names defamed by the local and federal authorities who arrested them.
Cherney, who lives in Garberville, says he netted about $500,000. He has spent much of his time since the settlement working on a movie about Redwood Summer.
“This has been a long term campaign with a tremendous amount of high water marks,” Cherney said of the timber wars. As to the end of the fight with Pacific Lumber, Cherney said, “I would say that I have a healthy dose of skepticism. But it does feel like a great weight has been lifted from the shoulders of southern Humboldt County to have Maxxam gone.”
Long-time activists, like Karen Pickett, a founder of the Berkeley-based Bay Area Coalition to Save Headwaters, say they plan to remain vigilant.
“There was a banner used very early on that said, ‘Maxxam out of Humboldt,’ and it’s finally happened,” she said. “But we’ve lost a lot.”
Coho salmon runs have been depleted through logging, she said, and the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird that nests in the tops of old-growth redwoods, “is hanging on for dear life.”
The second generation of forest defenders, as the activists prefer to be called, are tired.
Stoetzer and Berg said they plan to stick around Humboldt County and continue their activism, though they did not know when or how. “I guess,” Stoetzer said, scratching his matted hair, “I’ll get a job.”
Their main support on the ground, Amy Arcuri, left Humboldt State University eight years ago to devote herself full-time to sitting in trees or helping tree-sitters from the ground. She has trekked a mile and a half into the woods two or three time a week for nearly a year, bringing them supplies, emptying their waste buckets, providing tea and sympathy. But she is 30 years old now, with a 21-month-old daughter, River, and an organic farm to tend.
Now, she said, she has other work to do.
“This place is special because of all the endangered species,” she said, sitting on her haunches under “Spooner.” She named it that, she said, “Because I wanted to spoon with the tree.”
A knot at the base of the tree next to her was tagged, as are all other ancient redwoods in the grove, with pink tape that read: “Do Not Cut.”
Yelvington tells Anderson that online community news sites are an effective way for news organisations to connect with, and understand the needs and concerns of, communities of people formerly known as the audience.
The way for news organisations to transform audiences into communities,
How to transform audience into community.
Have a clear sense of purpose and mission and all buy into a common goal.
To participate in the conversation. Technology isn’t enough you have to have a voice, point of view and an opportunity to audiences to connect with the org.
Future of journalism how can news orgs survive? News orgs should keep in mind that the audience is not the enemy. A lot of news orgs are frightened of tinteracting with the audience, he feedback they might get back. Audiences want tobond with news orgs, and want to help news orgs to achieve their goals by providing news tips, ideas and so on.
Lawyers acting for the Sea-to-Sea Greenbelt Society sent the provincial cabinet a nine-p
-thetyee.ca
Lawyers acting for the Sea-to-Sea Greenbelt Society sent the provincial cabinet a nine-page letter asking them to fix a land use problem they created on southern Vancouver Island. The response they got from premier Gordon Campbell was just four sentences.
In the July 22, 2008 letter, Victoria lawyer Irene Faulkner and law student Rachel Forbes asked the cabinet to use its power to “not receive” Western Forest Products' application for subdivisions on former Tree Farm License land on southern Vancouver Island. That's something the cabinet can do under the Land Title Act, she said, “when it appears that the deposit of a subdivision plan is against the public interest.”
She referred to Auditor General John Doyle's July report that found the provincial government had not given due consideration to the public interest when it released 28,000 hectares of Western Forest Product's private land from management under the Tree Farm License system.
The government's decision was done without consulting the public or the Capital Regional District, she pointed out, which meant the CRD didn't have enough time to put bylaws in place to protect the status quo.
The CRD put in such bylaws after the fact, and is now defending them against a court challenge.
Here's the complete response, dated August 15 but not received by Faulkner until September 10, signed by premier Campbell: “Thank you for your letter regarding the removal of TFL lands in the Capital Regional District. Your comments and recommendations have been noted. Please be assured that they will be included in related discussions. I appreciate your taking the time to write.”
“The premier's response to our proposal . . . is cavalier and dismissive,” said Ray Zimmermann, director of Sea-to-Sea. "It was a big disappointment for us. We were hoping, not expecting but hoping, they'd address the substance of the issue."
Faulkner and Forbes' letter noted Sea-to-Sea will also request a reversal of the decision to release the land from the TFLs.
Hello investors,
Hello investors,
I'm so excited about the release of Private Money Goldmine Vol.1. This is the e-book that breaks down the new rules of real estate investing for the average Joe. This is the best of NO B.S. Real Estate investing brought to you from an average person that took the time to educate himself in the real estate arena and really excel at it. I have been able to take the same secrets that I have applied in my own life and show others how to do the exact same thing. I really believe that creative investing is the key to wealth.
You have to know how to make double digit returns if you are going to have any shot at competing with inflation. My new e-book is meant to help take the average Joe, and show him/her how to take what ever it is that you have and make it grow in as short of time as possible. Friends, you can't just let your money sit in a market that is doing the same thing as the "superman" ride at great adventure. You can never make up for the money that you have lost, even if the market does come back. The secret to creating the wealth that you seek in understanding the importance of the speed that your money takes to double.
Rule of 72
That means the time that it takes for your money to grow. Its has to be all about the "speed" on the rate of return on your money. Most people don't have a clue about the rule of 72. Quite frankly, if you don't have a grasp on this rule of 72, it may be very difficult for you to ever get out of the rat race. Here is how to use the rule of 72 to your advantage. Take the amount of interest that you are currently getting o your investment and divide it into 72. Here is an example below:
Double Your Money
Bob is making 2% interest on $10,000.00 that is sitting in his savings account. In order to find out how long it will take for Bob's money to double, he would divide (72 divided by 2=36). It would take Bob 36 years for his money to double in this particular investment vehicle. Do you really have 36 years for your money to double. Savvy investors are looking for a minimum return of 12% on their money. But I do have friends who are getting 24-36% on their money in other investments.
Private Money Rules
My goal is to slowly get you to think differently on your investment strategies. I have raised over 1 million dollars with private money to purchase properties at deep discounts, that I rehab and put right back on the market to sell on a rent to own or a quick retail sale. This method has allowed me to live a very good lifestyle. I am always looking for people to join my network, The CL Jones Real Estate Network, so that you can get high returns, and that I can do more deals. I believe that this is the ultimate win-win situation. Private Money Goldmine will show you how to take the steps to put yourself in position to get high returns on your investments. Our investments are secured by undervalued real estate. If you are interested in receiving the new e-book, please email me at :
cljones2008@gmail.com
I am more than happy to share my knowledge with anyone who is thirsty. I have been taken advantage of by people who new more than me in the past. It's not a good feeling. I promised God that I would do everything that I can to help people who are excited about investing in real estate. I do charge for my services, I don't think that people should pay excessive prices that we are accustomed to seeing at many of the "free" seminars that many of us attend.
I have a members only site that will launch on October 1st for people who want to learn how to be successful in real estate investing. The site will include everything you need to be successful in what ever niche that you want to get involved in. I will always give you my expert opinion, so that you don't have to run into the same brick walls that I have. It is nice to have a real coach to guide you in this dog-eat-dog world of real estate investing.
You no longer have to pay ridiculous prices for real estate information. I have a tag sale section on my new site that you can purchase and download at your home. These items are from my real estate education. I have paid over $30,000 in the last 3 years to know what I know. You will receive it at a fraction of the price that I paid for it. We will have weekly calls, and I am planning monthly meetings in your town as soon as I can get 100 people in a certain area.
Please, Please Please
Please tell your friends about the new sheriff in the real estate world that is coming to correct the B.S that have been going on for years. Your comments are always welcome. Its really time for God's people to be the head and not the tail.
Google has a thing called personalization. Search results are personalized based on your previous search behaviour. So for the exact same keyword phrase, you and I might get different results. There is little that you can do to sidestep personalization. One important way to promote your site is to be involved in social media, facebook, twitter, viddler, youtube, etc. These sites provide other avenues for people to discover your website. Search Engine Optimization is a very powerful way to drive traffic to your site but as the landscape online changes it is crucial that you are involved in social media as another way to send quality traffic to your site.
-by Chris Johnson
Let me first begin begin by stating that the opinions I offer here are mine alone, and do not represent the Vancouver Island Community Forest Action Network, of which I am a director.
VIC FAN has a mandate to speak for the protection of forest ecosystems in the region. That goal alone is fairly broad. Protection has different meanings to different people. How do we protect the forests? What are we protecting them from? And what does protection look like? I myself have yet to come up with a firm answer for all of these questions, as I believe that these issues do require a great deal of study and questioning. Forests and forestry are a central part of life on this coast, and unless one has been immersed in these issues for years, it can be difficult and perilous to come up with quick judgements on this complex situation.
Some have drawn lines in the sand, and the media has been quick to paint the situation as polarized. I'm referring to the situation in Clayoquot Sound, where a First Nations owned logging company is planning to harvest lumber in a pristine old-growth area. Environmental groups like Greenpeace and Friends of Clayoquot Sound have been quick to denouce this plan, and the media equally quick to declare the situation a war between environmentalists and natives.
It doesn't take much study into the situation to realize that things aren't quite that clear-cut (so to speak). Like any community, indigenous communities are rarely unified in their support or opposition to such plans. To be sure, the occupying settler governments of this region have ensured that the economic situation among indigenous communities is generally bleak. Regardless of what people might think about the value of old-growth forests, a real need exists for jobs and capital in these communities. Whether this logging operation is able to address the poverty in it's community or whether it will just create wealth for it's owners is something I couldn't speak to.
What I do know is that talks are now underway between environmentalists and the logging company, and it is this aspect of the situation that I wish to address.
I'm a recent settler in this region myself, and my ties to indigenous communities here are minimal. I do know however that much injustice has been left unaddressed, and continues to be inflicted by what I can only refer to as a policy of genocide by the Canadian government.
I'm somewhat of an anarchist and therefore not a big fan of nationalism, but if I had to choose sides I would throw my support behind the struggle for indigenous soverienty. It's pretty clear to me that the lack of treaties in most of this region, and the questionable nature of any of the existing treaties, means that the Canadian occupation of this land is an illegal one.
This is the starting point for my own 'environmentalism'; a 'radical' perspective that puts me at odds with my allies in the mainstream environmentalism movement.
The mainstream is much more pragmatic about this situation. The dominant belief is that colonialism is far too entrenched to ever imagine it being usurped, short of a complete collapse of civilization. Whether the existance of the B.C. and Canadian governments are just or legal in this region is irrelevant to this point of view, and what's more, it's bordering on seditious to suggest otherwise. Canada and Canadians are willing to go to war to protect their ill-gotten soverienty, and those of us who question the authority of the occupying governments are too few in number to bring about justice any time soon.
Therefore, whether it's true or not, the sentiment that we are protecting 'B.C. forests' is most likely to appeal to the average person, and therefore most likely to capture the support we need to protect these forests.
I'm also quite skeptical of the ability of settler environmentalists to broker acceptable agreements with logging companies. As (mostly urban) settlers, we have a much different relationship to the forest than do those whose culture has been rooted here for tens of thousands of years.
The values we seek to protect in these forests are of a different nature generally than traditional indigenous values. To many settlers, the use of wild medicinals is a new and novel alternative to 'traditional' mainstream medicine. To most settlers, agriculture has been our main source of food for almost ten thousand years. Here on the coast, hunting and gathering provided sustenance to the people until just 200 years ago. In some communities, it is still a central part of the diet.
Settler environmentalists tend to value 'wilderness' as a place devoid of human impact, yet from what I've learned of indigenous relationships to the land, there is no disconnect between the land and the people. The people are the land, and as Qwatisinas, a heriditary chief of the Nuxalk Nation recently said at a gathering of grassroots forest defenders on his traditional territory, "This is not the wilderness. This is our home."
Settler environmentalists tend to lobby for parks and other kinds of 'protected' areas. While this may create sanctuary for non-human biodiversity, it inadvertantly plays into the genocide of indigenous cultures that all prohibition of cultural practices creates. Though indigenous people are increasingly being granted hunting and gathering access to park lands, it is only those people who are willing to acknowledge the authority of the occupying government who are able to receive permits. Therefore, the creation of parks, under the current regulation, conflicts with assertion of indigenous soverienty.
Two years ago, the big mainstream environmental groups, Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network and ForestEthics brokered the 'Great Bear Rainforest Deal' with logging companies to bring an end to the “war in the woods” on the central coast of British Columbia. Under this agreement, these groups agreed to end their protests, blockades and marketing campaigns.
Yet according to Qwatsinas, whose territory was included in the agreement without his people's consent, clearcutting has been sped up, and impacts to the land have been increasing.
The warm smile that usually beams from Qwatsinas' face disappeared when I asked him about this year's salmon run. Salmon runs have been bad all up and down the coast, and the situation is no different in Nuxalk Territory, where the government seems intent on destroying traditonal salmon fisheries. The end of salmon on these rivers would not only impact the Nuxalk and other coastal nations in ways we settlers can hardly imagine, but it would also remove the need to protect these rivers, and thus open the doors to more industry and development in the region. To many, this appears to be an intentional (and genocidal) policy of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Despite all this, the Big Greens have given away their ability to speak out on these issues, and in the process, betrayed the indigenous communities who comprise the majority of residents in the area.
Greenpeace was invited to Nuxalk Territory by the House of Smayusta, the council of heriditary chiefs. One of the conditions of that invitation was that no deals would be made without the approval of the First Nations partners. Such a violation of protocol, at a time when many of us are working to address the damage created by the continuing colonialization of this land, is hard to ignore.
Will the same thing happen in Clayoquot? Can we trust that any deal reached between the environmentalists and logging companies will take into account the indigenous use, values and connection to the land?
Protection of the forests in these coastal territories is of great importance to me. Of equal importance is the fact that people are not seperate from the land. We are, some more than others, of this land and part of it, and as such we, as 'environmentalists', must endevour to encompass aspects of social justice into our struggle for protection of the land. Such a goal is not simple, and many mistakes will be made along the way. I may still be a long way from integrating myself and these issues, yet I wish to acknowledge that this is where my heart leads me. I urge others to look closer at these issues as well.
-CP
VANCOUVER — Leaving British Columbia's old-growth forests standing may make more economic sense than cutting them down for timber, especially as the province looks to strategies to cut global warming, a new B.C. study suggests.
The report from Simon Fraser University challenges the status quo and uses Ministry of Forest data to show conservation wins out over logging when forests are valued for their role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere, protecting endangered species and providing opportunities for recreation.
The study backed by three environmental groups - Wilderness Committee, David Suzuki Foundation, and Ecojustice - used computer modeling to look at a variety of conservation and logging scenarios in a large tract of forest near Vancouver.
In almost every scenario, researchers say they found the value of the carbon captured and stored by the trees far outweighed the value of the lumber harvested from the logs.
Faisal Moola, science director for the David Suzuki Foundation, called the results a clear indicator that B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as it works with other western provinces to reduce global warming.
"The old-growth forests that we have are not only going to be a benefit in the fight against climate change, but there's also a significant economic windfall that could be celebrated by British Columbians," he said.
As the B.C. government begins to participate in a market for carbon credits with other western provinces and states, the study suggest the towering trees and the rich soil that surrounds them could become a cash crop for their carbon-storing properties.
Trees absorb and store carbon dioxide, using it as a building block in their development. When old-growth forests are harvested, that carbon is released into the atmosphere.
While much of global warming is caused by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline, Moola said 25 per cent of the carbon dioxide that hits the atmosphere is caused by destruction of carbon stores of old-growth forests.
"The study shows there's direct economic benefit for B.C. if we can account for the carbon stored. B.C. should be protecting its old-growth forest as a strategy to combat global warming," he said.
The cap-and-trade system currently in the works through the Western Climate Initiative puts a ceiling on carbon emissions. Polluters that can't reduce their emissions will be able to purchase offsets to make up the differences mandated under the cap, which could give B.C. a significant revenue stream as the price of carbon rises, Moola said.
Duncan Knowler, the SFU associate professor behind the study, said the report is being conservative in its assessment of carbon prices, which are set to rise in coming years.
It values carbon at $20 to $150 per tonne, well below other estimates of $350 per tonne.
For example, at $75 per tonne, the forest in the Fraser timber supply area that is home to the endangered spotted owl is worth $1.64 billion, according to the study.
The study also excludes the role forests play in purifying water and protecting fish habitat, which could make for a more robust argument in favour of conservation, Knowler said.
And though the study considers only a specific area of Lower Mainland forest, he said the "surprising" results could prompt a rethinking of the current strategy around cutting old-growth forest.
While the end results may differ in other parts of B.C., "the basic principles . . . are not so different," he said.
"The biggest single benefit of preserving the forest was the carbon capture benefit, and you're going to get that in all old-growth forests."
The area studied is also home to B.C.'s entire spotted owl population - just 10 birds that Gwen Barlee of the Wilderness Committee says are on the brink of extinction in the province.
Barlee said the report refutes the government's main argument against protecting the owl: That it's too costly to protect their habitat, given the money raked in from logging.
Instead, the report shows that protecting the habitat of endangered species actually has direct benefit for community and human well-being, as well, she said.
"Preserving these old-growth forests . . . could potentially prevent species from going extinct, but could also help residents of B.C."
Barlee is careful to point out the report doesn't argue for an end to logging, but instead calls for a reduction in the coming decades.
"We need to value nature in a different way than we have in the past," she said.
The rapid decline in the spotted owl is one of many warning signs nature is giving, Barlee said.
"Typically, endangered species come from endangered ecosystems. You have an ecosystem in such trouble that it can't support a species that has lived there for millennia."
Good Morning Investors,
Welcome to the Ramblings of a real estate genius! The Only site for No B.S. Real Estate Investing!
New book
It feels great to wake up in the tranquil settings of sunny gator town. It is so much different in the south than in CT. No hussle and bussle. Everyone is friendly, and I don't have to look out for snow. I am taking the next two weeks to complete some unfinished business in my life. My main goal for coming to Florida is to complete a book that I have been trying to complete for at least a year.
So I'm going to walk in the steps of T. Harv Eker, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, and many more great human beings. Each of the gentlemen that I just mentioned spoke about going into the wilderness or just being with nature so that they could work on their life callings without any distractions. No its my turn world! You see I'm more than an just a real estate investor.
I'm settled in Virginia and my job at the Student Press Law Center is as expected...awesome. It feels good to be part of the staff there whose careers are to help inform and protect citizens regarding the First Amendment. It's a bitter-sweet feeling.
Anyway, I'm at Starbucks in Rosslyn. I've learned that people who live in the DC-metro area call their areas by which metro stop they are closest to. Hence, me being in Rosslyn (Arlington, Va.) right now. I'm still trying to figure out the lingo for where I live in Alexandria (where I live). Ah, well. Here's a boring video of me at Starbucks jacking some wi-fi. My Internet-jacking at the apartment gets 1 to 2 signal bars. (I'm on a Mac)
P.S. Frickin' YouTube won't let me upload a video that is longer than 10 minutes. Ugh. Thank you, Viddler!
