Litvack started by speaking about what mobile means to newspapers, which he said is the next-generation revenue producer for publishers. But sorting through how to do it and figure out the parameters as well as how to market it to potential readers and make sure advertisers are getting the return they need are just some of the problems facing newspapers.

He focused on the iPhone as a seminal event, with the size of the screen, the touchscreen and the use of icons as well as the browser. "We're moving away from WAP," he says. "Mobile web is simpler and easier to understand. It's a similar experience to the Internet."

A study showed that most mobile users want news...but there's no icon on the iPhone for news. The Mobile News Network from AP was created to address this gap in the mobile environment. First goal was to make it a good user experience.

Working on a GUI that was customizable and easy to share for users was the first order of business. Then Associated Press built a comprehensive news network; they currently handle news for 80 percent of the U.S. newspapers, including smaller local newspapers. iPhone users have been able to rate applications, says Litvack, and one reviewer said "it's like a newspaper in your phone." "As far as we're concerned mobile is the killer app," he says. "We've had more than 400,000 unique visitors in August--and this is just on the iPhone." He reported that they're planning to roll out more and more versions for different phones. Page views have grown dramatically from May (2.1 million) to September (26 million).

With regard to how they're making money, Litvack noted that news should be delivered free. "We made a conscious decision that news on the iphone had to be complete," he says. "Not just a headline where you'd click and go to someone else's website. The user had to have a complete experience, without getting confused." AP invested millions into ingesting and displaying content into one unified solution for the end user at was complete and consistent. "We'll give them the whole story and then let them decide how much of it they wanted," he says.

Most important categories are top stories (29 percent), local news (18 percent), sports (12 percent) and entertainment (9 percent). Other top categories are photos, wacky news (a popular click-through category) and world news.

How AP begins to monetize this is the next big challenge. Display advertising is projected to grow from $54 million to $1.1 billion by 2012 (Yankee Group). The ads have a recall rate similar to TV, he also reported (IAG May 2008). "It's definitely working, for brand awareness and aiding purchasing as a whole," he says. "We see a higher ROI for the advertiser." It also allows interactive marketing opportunities, he notes. AP will be adding new categories including movie reviews, restaurant guides, event listings, weather and traffic. Future features include a news ticker, multi-lingual versions and international partnerships.

"A lot of what we're talking about is the smart phone," he says. "AP made a big bet on the smart phone. People asked us why we did that, and we did it because it's going to grow. In 5 years, it's expected that smart phones will be 75 to 80 percent of the market. This is where the market is going."

Litvack says AP has also reached out to a variety of handset manufacturers to create more optimized versions. "Our goal, simply put, is to become the news button on every next-generation phone," he says.

Schmidt predicts that, although it may take some time, mobile business will be a larger business than the PC-Web. I can see the logic in this. After all, your phone is mobile and is almost always on you. The iPhone with it’s real web browser is providing new mobile advertising opportunities – with the likes of Nokia, Blackberry and Motorola all soon to follow. For anyone who is unsure what mobile web even is, it is where a phone or PDA has WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) capabillities, and this is used facilitate access to the Internet from your mobile. To date it’s been fairly lousy and not really worth bothering with despite what some pundits might say. But it seems it’s all about to change.

I’ll be interested to see what form mobile advertising starts to take. I guess it will be the likes of redeemable mobile coupons, opt-in competitions, a new mobile form of advanced banner advertising, campaigns based on video and so on. The only advertising I have had delivered to my phone so far was from my provider and it was some lame little animated gif. As it matures advertising campaigns will obviously become even more personal and hopefully more effective. Cell Operators losing their role as Shepherd

There was a time when talk was cheap, by following the commercial rules of your farmer, the Telecoms Operator.

During the past decade, the telecommunications cost to a family group has increased ten-fold as a commodity of their household budget, without a noteworthy improvement in their information authority.

Mobile comms have become as indispensible and applicable to anybody as sexual activity at the age that they can do it.

The beauty of owning a tool, is that the user can (mis-) use it (sic) wherever and whenever he wishes,
whilst the user is the only party that knows his own position (and stay anonymous) to interested callers.

The exception, however, is your mobile service operator who possesses your bond for at least the 2 year period of your agreement, but would effectively shepherd the paying commmunication user for life, since the cellular provider has given birth to your mobile identity number.  The operator knows at all time who and where you are and can shepherd your voice exchange, but lately also all data and visual information knowledge.

Media and Web 2.0 applications are much more desirable and digestible food (produced by their chosen interest group)
for the flock, that are made available in a new feedlot format.   With the latest broadband transmission facilities these potent (and desirable) offerings are now delivered swiftly and with vast capacity to the flock.

The new style offerings are very seductive to the kid lambs, making it more difficult for the parental
Pa Ram and Ma Ewe to guide the youngsters in line with old traditions.

Current offerings of mobile WAP content, makes it even more personal for youngsters to experience fun away from the feedlots; virtually removing the fences of their conventional veld camp.

Bursting Social Network groups herd interested peer groups in a flock using widgets installed on their mobile devices, allowing groups to do Talk as well as Chat typed messaging, bypassing the control of their contracted cellular master.

The Generation-Y  youth is fearless in applying mobile media tools in order to empower themselves, divorced from all the constraining communications regulations.  Yuppies are not inhibited, but would use Facebook and MXit to make a statement about themselves, find rapport from their elected peer group and then make their move to seize opportunities that they find available to them.

During all the years of herding the flock to ther regulated Value Added Services, the mobile operator , concentrated on advertising expensive messaging to their paying users.  The cellular SP should rather offer some guidelines and social services to their registerd flock, adding value by tutoring techniques or offering portals whereby the community can participate in providing a social service (such as a liftclub) for their mutual benefit.

The GenY flock will change the landscape dramatically due to supporting open source wiki selfhelp  online communities, if mobile operators persist to treat the flock as dumb and docile sheep.  Only if the media offer a platform where users can contribute and share information will the new generations cooperate and pay for the costly media services.

Ho da tempo due numeri di telefono. Il mio solito e intramontabile Wind praticamente da sempre e una scheda Vodafone che uso per pochissimi contatti.

Entrambe la compagnie offrono opzioni tariffarie verso numeri degli stessi operatori. Io ho sottoscritto sia quelli Vodafone che quelli Wind. Il punto è che il 90% dei miei contatti è Wind, e un misero 5% è Vodafone e usando opzioni tariffarie spendo più con la seconda, il che è un controsenso.

Wind offre queste opzioni:

• - Noi Wind: 200 minuti verso Wind a fronte di 6,00 € al mese, nessun altro costo.
• - Noi Wind Sms: 4000 sms verso Wind a fronte di 2,00 € al mese, nessun altro costo.
• - I-mode No Limit: 750 € di traffico dati wap a fronte di 3,00 € al mese, nessun altro costo.

Mensilmente quindi io spendo 11,00 € netti. Se spendo di più è perchè chiamo o scrivo sms verso numeri di altri operatori.

Vodafone offre una brutta copia dell'opzione Wind:

• Vodafone Zero Limits: 1000 minuti di chiamate e videochiamate, 100 sms e 100 mms al giorno, navigazione gratuita dopo l'accesso al portale a fronte di 1,00€ settimanale = 4,00 € al mese.
  Il neo sta in questo: si paga ogni primo minuto di conversazione telefonica e il più delle volte si finisce a pagare per aver sentito l'inizio della segreteria e basta. Inoltre si paga sempre il primo sms e il primo mms. Si paga la connessione al portale ogni volta 29 centesimi.
  Se mando 1 sms al giorno → 0,15 · 30 = 4,50 €
  Se faccio 1 chiamata al giorno → 0,38 · 30 = 11,40 €
  Non calcoliamo di usare il wap.
  In un mese medio spendo 20,00 € e usando questa sim unicamente per quei tre o quattro numeri Vodafone che ho.

Visto e considerato che ho tre o quattro contatti Vodafone mi conviene comunque abbandonare la sim e pagare qualcosina di più con la Wind. Intanto qualcuno dei miei contatti Vodafone sta passando a Wind.

Cuando contratamos la tarifa Blackberry con la compañía de telefonía móvil, el servicio de correo y navegación en realidad es RIM quien lo proporciona. Así, nuestro operador sirve de "puente", lo que implica que la conexión a internet no la realizamos a través de sus respectivos portales WAP.

Pero lo cierto es que nuestras amadas compañías hacen todo lo posible para que a poco que nos despistemos o no conozcamos mucho del tema no sea así, y nos conectemos a través de WAP cuando usamos aplicaciones que precisan de conexión, de forma que esa conexión ya no quede dentro de la tarifa Blackberry, y puedan facturarnos unos euros de más al cabo del mes (no es el caso del tráfico de correo, que siempre entra dentro de la tarifa contratada).

Así que hoy explicaré como evitarlo, si bien antes hay un concepto que debéis conocer, y es el de Libro de servicio. En besadmin.com encontramos una buena definición: Un libro de servicio es una pieza de informacion que indica a un dispositivo como interactuar con la infraestructura de BlackBerry. Algunos libros de servicio son proporcionados o bien por el servidor BES, otros son proporcionados por el operador de telefonia.

Según los Libros de servicios que tengamos en nuestro terminal, se conectará de una forma u otra a la red. Nuestra compañía nos proporciona los Libros de servicios necesarios, tanto los de Blackberry como los WAP.

Solución: eliminar los Libros de Servicios WAP del teléfono de manera que todas las conexiones las realicemos a través de la infraestructura de Blackberry.

¿Cómo hacerlo?. Siguiendo estos pasos:

1.- Vamos Opciones dentro del menú principal.

2.- Opciones avanzadas

3.- Libro de servicios

4.- Aquí eliminamos todos los elementos excepto los que ves en la pantalla (te situas sobre el libro que desees eliminar, botón BB y seleccionas la opción, así con todos). ***[CICAL] y ***[CMIME] se corresponden con vuestras cuentas de correo y sus calendarios, esos NO los debéis eliminar (por el tamaño de la pantalla en la captura no aparecen todos los libros de servicios de mi teléfono).

5.- Una vez eliminados todos los libros de servicios WAP, volvemos al menú de opciones avanzadas (paso 2) y pinchamos en "Inserción del explorador".

6.- Y debemos dejarlo como en la imagen.

Y con esto nuestro teléfono ya no se conectará a través del servicio WAP de la compañía. Ahora sólo debes tener en cuenta el límite de descarga contratado, en su caso.

Finalmente, nos aseguraremos de que el navegador por defecto es el de Blackberrry.

7.- Volvemos a las opciones avanzadas y seleccionamos "Explorador".

8.- Comprueba que el explorador predeterminado es el mismo que tienes abajo.

Por último asegúrate de que en "Opciones avanzadas-TCP" está todo en blanco.

Y ya está listo tu teléfono para que la operadora no te cobre de más.

Como verás, yo he eliminado la configuración de los MMS, porque es algo que no utilizo nunca, y en una Blackberry considero que tiene todavía menos sentido. Si quieres conservarlo, puedes hacerlo, pero para ello en el punto 6 deberás dejar activadas las dos opciones de inserción WAP, pues los MMS utilizan esta conexión, y puede que otras conexiones se realicen también a través de WAP, con el coste añadido que eso supondrá.

También he eliminado los Mapas porque mi BB no tiene GPS y con Google Maps para una emergencia me basta. Claro está que debes adaptarlo a tus necesidades.

Todas las capturas se corresponden a un teléfono Orange, pero es igualmente válido para el resto de compañías.

En casi un año de utilización de Blackberry y con esta configuración jamás he tenido una conexión fuera del bono. Y Orange cobra 10 cts. por cada conexión WAP, incluida la descarga de adjuntos de correo, por lo que no es ninguna tontería esto de eliminar los Libros de servicio.

También ten en cuenta que las tres compañías incluyen en los Libros de servicios sus propios navegadores (e-moción, Vodafone Life! y Orange World), y los iconos de éstos son casi idénticos al Explorador de Internet de Blackberry, por lo que es fácil llegar a confundirte. Si optas por no eliminar los libros de servicio o bien se descargan sin darte cuenta, fíjate bien que la conexión la haces siempre a través del navegador de Blackberry, pues de otra forma te cobrarán por la conexión WAP.

Si por lo que fuera quitas la batería del teléfono y la vuelves a poner o apagas el teléfono con la tecla "on/off" (no desde el menú) y lo vuelves a poner en funcionamiento, los Libros de servicios se volverán a descargar en el móvil, por lo que deberás repetir la operación.

Para recuperar los Libros de servicio puedes hacerlo como digo en el párrafo anterior o bien desde la página de gestión de la cuenta Blackberry de tu compañía.

Para finalizar, algunas aplicaciones no entran dentro del Bono de Blackberry, así que asegúrate bien antes de lo que instalas, para evitar sorpresas desagradables.

Bahkan dari situs resmi Sony Ericsson sendiri, IM3 tidak direkomendasikan (do not use)...
Bah apa pulak ini, aku kan make kartu ini... buat GPRS murah buanget... hiks

Sebenarnya setting GPRS/MMS/3G Telkomsel bisa langsung dari OTA, kebetulan Telkomsel bisa mengirim langsung settingan M600i. Untuk mengaktifkan GPRS/MMS yaitu dari menu standby langsung aja ketik *999# OK
trus pilih 1, Simpatiku, lalu pilih balas 5, aktivasi

Sementara untuk mengaktifkan 3G dari *360# OK > pilih 1, 2
Untuk setting ponsel SE M600i/W950i/P1i ketik S Sony Ericsson M600i/W950i/P1i(pilih salah 1) kirim ke 5432, langsung beres.

Issue
On July 7th @ 6:30am I started getting SMS messages saying "Thank you for using Airtel Services" from the number "64611010".
This continued till 7:07am and it was a total of 32 SMS with Rs. 10 each (Rs. 320).

The same issue happened in 2006. After argueing/shouting for 6months I finally got a GPRS technical person on the call. Once I explained to him that I recieved so many messages and me swearing that I never used any WAP content (I use a Windows Mobile) he checked my account and found that WAP was disabled on my account and still I was getting these messages. He also blocked my number on thier WAP router and the messages continued. Then he agreed that there is some issue between Airtel and the company where these WAP related things are outsourced. God only knows what he did to fix the issue from thier end and the charges were refunded.

So this time having this knowledge that front-line "what they call as voice of technical team" won't have any clue of what I'm talking about, I requested to get a technical person on this issue. They agreed but I got a call from Billing department instead who started saying that "you have used it thats why you are charged". I requested to get a technical person on the call but it never happened. I told them unless the charges are reversed I cannot pay the bill. I have made several calls and recieved several calls reminding me to pay the bill.  No complaints are taken seriously till now and the story continues without any expected action from Airtel.
Also from the day the complaint was lodged my GPRS connection is disconnected and they are not ready to enable it back.

I also in parellel started contacting Airtel corporate-care contacts for the company. To be frank they have been pathetic in their response and have never returned reply for my emails.

I have been struggling to get this fixed for almost 2months now and I'm also aware that my both mobile connections would be disconnected soon. Customer service is pathetic and never ready to listen. Corporate contacts are useless as well with no response to email or phone calls.

I'll be publishing all email conversations and recorded audio conversations in a separate blog entry soon.

CONCLUSION
If you have GPRS+WAP service enabled on you cell phone this (DWN_PRM) shows under SMS others either because
 1. You dowloaded ring tone, wallpaper or java games through WAP service from your mobile
 2. You are bitten by the bug which is going on with Airtel customers. Airtel is charging several customers without using the service (I'm also one of them).

As far as I know other than the front-line customer service (121) everyone in Airtel knows about this issue.

I came to know from several people that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue. So please post a comment if you are also fighting the same battle with Airtel...
