Life is blah, blah, blah. You hope for blah and sometimes you find it but mostly it's blah...

O que acontece a uma série quando a tiramos do seu elemento? Será que ganha nova vida, que renasce das cinzas e tem pernas para vingar sozinha? Ou será que, simplesmente, continua na espiral decadente que vinha a seguir?

Depois de uma terceira temporada que começou bem, mas que rapidamente diminuiu de qualidade, Weeds precisava de se redimir, e a mudança de cenário para a fronteira entre a Califórnia e o México parecia ser a ideal. Uma nova vida para as personagens, uma história diferente, e uma oportunidade profissional para a protagonista, que passava desta forma de traficante de bairro a correio de drogas entre os lados da fronteira. Infelizmente, longe de trazer consigo uma muito necessária mudança à história, esta quarta temporada de Weeds apenas conseguiu confirmar que a grande revelação do canal Showtime se encontra pelas ruas da amargura.

Aquilo que sempre distinguiu Weeds foi o seu humor negro e a sua capacidade de criticar a sociedade americana. A história de uma mãe dos subúrbios que, após a morte do marido, resolve transformar-se em traficante de droga na sua comunidade, dava-nos a oportunidade de soltar umas belas gargalhadas, ao mesmo tempo que nos deixava a pensar sobre os caminhos que escolhemos. As personagens, longe de serem estereótipos, conseguiam, pelo meio de situações caricatas e mesmo absurdas, mostrar algum profundidade. Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) era claramente uma mulher que fazia más escolhas, que se envolvia com os homens errados por acaso, mas que tentava dar o melhor à sua família. Os filhos, pelo meio das típicas crises da puberdade e da adolescência, procuravam uma figura paternal, que o tio Andy (Justin Kirk) tentava, de forma não convencional, dar. E os amigos e vizinhos, sem dúvida as personagens mais hilariantes pela forma como nos deixavam adivinhar a vida nas comunidades fechadas, eram obrigados, mesmo assim, a lidar com problemas normais, como casamentos desfeitos e tratamentos contra o cancro.

Longe de tudo o que lhe era familiar, a quarta temporada caiu no erro criar situações tão absurdas, tão inusitadas, que qualquer ligação com a realidade se tornava difícil de reconhecer. De comédia inteligente e mordaz, Weeds passou assim a ser uma comédia insípida que procura a piada fácil, recorrendo ao sexo como forma de compensar a clara falta de história. A chegada a Ren Mar até trouxe algum humor à história, com a entrada em cena do sogro de Nancy, Lenny (Albert Brooks), e a sua obsessão pela morte anunciada da mãe, mas tão rápida quanto a sua partida foi o declínio da história, que sofreu tantas voltas e reviravoltas, tantas entradas e saídas de personagens, que quase se tornava difícil saber em que pé se encontrava. Se Silas (Hunter Parrish) e a sua nova conquista, e Shane (Alexander Gould) e o seu novo estatuto na escola não contribuíram em nada para a história, já os esquemas de Andy e um regressado Dean (Kevin Nealon), surgido sabe-se lá como de Magestic, foram de morrer de tédio. E nem mesmo a melhor personagem de todas as temporadas, a inigualável Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins), foi desta vez poupada: começou a temporada na cadeia, de onde saiu para ser espiã da polícia; foi parceira de tráfico de Nancy, vendedora na loja para grávidas, e viciada em drogas até ser, prontamente, enviada para um centro de recuperação, de onde saiu para viajar até à Guatemala à procura da filha perdida, que não vemos desde o primeiro episódio da série. Tudo isto em treze episódios sem qualquer ponta de humor.

Mas se todas estas histórias foram fracas, nenhuma se compara à ridícula invenção de um túnel entre o México e a loja de Nancy, que em vez de a fazer pôr, de uma vez por todas, a mão na consciência, serviu apenas como forma de arranjar mais um par romântico a uma desesperada Nancy. Com o currículo de Nancy nas últimas temporadas, é bom que Esteban Reyes (Demian Bichir) se cuide, pois poderá vir a ser a próxima vítima desta viúva negra.

Quando se lida com uma temporada muito fraca, onde nenhuma história se evidencia, é difícil escolher um momento para a ilustrar, mas desta vez a frase de Andy é a perfeita para caracterizar uma temporada onde tudo foi… bom… blah!

I planted eggplants, capsicums, spinach, celery:

pak choi, mesclun, basil, pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers (those 3 actually sprouted for me), tomatoes:

(Gross Lisse, low acid yellow, Roma, Tommy Toe), and sowed some more radish seeds because they germinated really well for me:

The onions are doing really well, getting bigger finally:

And the raspberries are all also coming to life, you can even see the flower buds forming in the centre that will hopefully become raspberries one day!

Also high on the agenda this weekend is the weeds in the garden beds which are really starting to take over. Here is the patch I was focussing on today:

Still so much to do but it will just have to wait for another day.

In other news, my dad bought us a brand new barbecue today so we had a bit of a braai (south african barbecue) with marinated chicken wings, roast potatoes, and cheese & tomato toasted sandwiches ('toasts') and also a nice green salad. Would have been nice to make the salad from my own produce, but you can't have everything I suppose!

— É mesmo. Mas vi só uns episódios; não acompanho a série. E não é para mim. É para um amigo meu, que é viciado nisso…

E, antes que eu terminasse a frase, ela retruca:

— Viciado na maconha?

— Hahahaha! É, se ele usa maconha eu não sei… Mas que ele é viciado em seriados, isso com certeza!

Enter the Internet and more websites where you can just search, click and watch any show you want. I decided to try "Weeds". I'd heard a lot about it and so began my journey in what I think is the funniest and smartest show on airing on television. I actually can't make that claim because it's one of the only shows that I watch.

What I love about it is how developed all the characters are, such as Nancy, Doug, Uncle Andy, Shane and Celia to name a few. It reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite - although there was no plot, the characters pieced together a great film. In the case of Weeds, there is a plot, a big one, and I don't see this show getting canceled anytime soon, it's too damn good.

The scenarios are hilarious, especially the ones that have to do with characters like Andy, Celia and Doug. It shows how adults act like children and how children are more aware and mature than the adults (Shane). The producers are not afraid to address important issues and are transparent on their views regarding the US army's invasion on Iraq and Christian fundamentalism.

I'm hooked on this show. Right now I'm watching season 3 and hope to finish it off before I get a job (and have no more time). So what I'm saying is, watch this show, it's original (c'mon a white suburban widow drug dealer? hilarious!) and you'll be laughing the whole way through. You won't be wasting your time with it, unlike some other shows on television these days, honest.

Showers meant we needed coats on for the initial task of checking previously worked areas for seedlings of Erica and Radiata pine and happily very few were found, although a few re-sprouting Erica were located. With improving weather we moved onto two pockets of Erica close to the creek and cleared both. The southerly site had very few Epacris virgata bushes, but the other had quite a number and they were all growing in very close proximity to the invading Spanish Heath making it slow work picking the correct trunk to cut.

The Epacris was in flower but many of them appeared to be suffering from the spate of dry years. The best specimens were close to the creek and a patch of quite large bushes was discovered a short distance up the slope on the northern side of the creek.

Some patches of Erica remain for primary work at a future date. One small Holly bush was discovered in the creek plus Elishas Tears , small pullable radiata pines and a couple of larger pines that will need trunk injections.

Vemos el lugar donde la mujer consigue la mercanía, donde unos “jíbaros” (lo digo con cariño) de piel negra que la empacan y la distribuyen, una familia donde predominan las palabras de alto calibre… uno de los clientes principales de NANCY es JOSH (el mismo de la película EL INVISIBLE y próximo protagonista de la versión en cine de DRAGON BALL) un chico lindo que dice que la gente se droga para ver la peñicula de moda del momento: LA PASIÓN DE CRISTO (eso dice el año en que se estrenó esta serie), NANCY le advierte que nunca le vaya a vender droga a sus hijos ni a menores porque tendría problemas con ella, pero por un oído le entra y por el otro le sale, pues se va a venderla al colegio de sus hijos, allí ella lo descubre y lo reprende pero él la amenaza…

Alguien de quien no hemos hablado es de la vecina y amiga de NANCY, CELIA (ELIZABETH PERKINS), una mujer ama de casa acartonada en las normas, madre de la novia de SILAS, el hijo mayor de NANCY, una mujer a quien el marido la engaña con una asiática y que le pone videos en peluches en la habitación a su hija para saber si tiene sexo…

NANCY tiene dos problemas en su casa, JUDAH el pequeño tiene una manía por meterse en problemas y le gusta la sangre (no es vampiro: TRUE BLOOD y MOONLIGHT quedan en otro lado) y SILAS se atreve a pedirle permiso para tener sexo con su novia en su casa y ante la negativa de ella lo hacen sin su consentimiento siendo decubiertos en pleno acto… sexual. La PARKER se luce en este personaje, en una de las últimas escenas se derrumba a llorar y a reír y lo hace ante sus vecinos los que le venden droga para revenderla…

Lo más divertido del epi es la manera que encuentra NANCY para que JOSHUA no venda droga a menores, le descubre el secretito: el chico es “chulo” o “prepago” para ancianos homosexuales y cuando están en plena función ella invade la casa del cliente del chico y lo encuentra en pantaloncillos (a propósito que chico tan lindo) y le dice que si vuelve a venderle droga a menores le cuenta a su padre lo que acaba de ver…

CELIA ve el video en el que su marido tiene sexo con otra mujer, para los que creían que ella no lo sabía, veo este personaje como una de las esposas falsas de la película de NICOLE KIDMAN: LAS ESPOSAS PERFECTAS…

I'll wait here while you go and pour a glass of Chablis – you'll need it because this is kind of a long one…ready?

OK. So, we rolled into Las Vegas around dinnertime on Wednesday, checked in, had dinner and enjoyed some live music at House of Blues, did some things that will stay in Vegas (because this is not a tell-all blog, people) and got us a good night's sleep. Them's some comfy beds!

Thursday morning, we set out to explore the Strip, hoping to visit a few resorts and find some trouble get the lay of the land. We wandered into New York, New York and were immediately accosted approached by a nice young man who asked if we had plans or did we need some help figuring out what to do during our stay, and offered that he could get us some good deals on show tickets. We were wary but intrigued and stepped over to his kiosk where he started tapping at a computer screen to help us narrow down a good fit for our interests. You know – because he cared. We settled on tickets to see the erotic Zumanity for $20 each – a real bargain! Then, Because He Liked Us So Much, he threw in VIP access and a waived cover charge at Rok, and then added VIP passes to Coyote Ugly too. (More about Coyote Ugly later!)

"So dude – what's the catch?" I asked, one skeptical eyebrow raised.

"No catch, really - all you have to do is agree to go on a short little 120minutetourofagorgeousresortpropertydownthestrip. It's fun, you'll get to meet some really nice people, and they give away other prizes, too. Once you finish the tour, you'll get your gifts."

"OK," we said, figuring there's no way we could be pressured into buying some vacation resort, because you can't squeeze blood from a stone, or a turnip, or however the saying goes. Meanwhile, we'd take advantage of the free refreshments and likely score some serious blog fodder, and on that last point, we were richly rewarded.

Tahiti Village is a condo resort on the south end of the Strip. But it's more than that, they promise, for the owners of Tahiti Village are purveyors of a lifestyle. Dream merchants. Turns out, it's also a bit of a cult. Our own personal Dream Merchant, coincidentally named Curt, escorted us to a seminar room where we got acquainted while enjoying a delicious breakfast shrink-wrapped Danish and watery coffee. Turns out, we had more in common with our boy Curt than just his name, for he, too, had come here on vacation, was snagged by the "body snatchers," and the next thing you know, he and his wife had sold their house, moved to Las Vegas, and he fell so in love with the lifestyle that he began selling DREAMS to other couples. All this from a former network engineer! Who'da thunkit.

Then, the lights were dimmed and the captives potential buyers were shown a video of all the old Vegas hotels being imploded (actually a cool video), the point being that the new mega-resorts are an unaffordable way for most to vacation. But, Fear Not! For Tahiti Village offers you the opportunity to literally own a piece of land on the Las Vegas Strip (it's a deeded timeshare), and the good folks at Tahiti Village could make that possible for us today!

So went our host's script. I can't recall his name, but he was clearly a legend in his own mind. He hosts some cable TV boxing show. He had longish blond hair, quite the suntan, and wore a khaki-colored suit. He reminded us Matthew Modine's character from the third season of Weeds, Sullivan Groff, who developed Majestic next to Agrestic. A slick huckster. (Is that redundant?) The vultures Dream Merchants, full from drinking this guy's Kool-Aid, were planted about the room knew exactly when to applaud, stand and cheer, and they did so with gusto.

Who's here celebrating something today? Our host asked the room, and the Dream Merchants announced their couple's occasion to much applause and fanfare. There were three anniversaries and a honeymoon. See? We are MAKING MEMORIES here, people!

Dream Merchant Curt gave us a tour of the lovely pool outside and the lobby complete with full concierge service. Then he showed us the condo unit, which really was quite lovely – very modern. He gushed about the maid service, the free shuttle to the Strip and the airport, the 24-hour bar and restaurant, the organized activities for the kiddies. Really, a little slice of paradise here, and who are you to deny your loved ones of that opportunity? But not only that, we could have TWELVE WEEKS a year to vacation at any affiliated resort for maybe a couple hundred dollars each week, and you can share the weeks with your friends.

We started thinking about it. Could we somehow parlay this "investment" into a cheap beach week in North Carolina with our friends, all of us in our own beachfront condos in the same resort? Of course, said Dream Merchant Curt. You can go anywhere, anytime you want, with whomever you want. And your week in Las Vegas is free! Now let's go talk some numbers, shall we?

Back we went to the seminar room, where all of the zombies Dream Merchants were seated at tables with their unsuspecting prey potential buyers, Running The Numbers, where Running The Numbers equals trying to get you to commit to a small monthly payment while placing little or no focus on the HIGH-INTEREST LOAN OF UPWARDS OF $10,000, and did we mention, unless you have a bankruptcy or lien, we guarantee we'll approve financing?

All of a sudden, one of the Dream Merchants stood up and yelled to the room, "PLEASE WELCOME JOE AND CINDY TO THE FAMILY – THEY ARE OUR NEWEST OWNERS!" All the Dream Merchants stood and enthusiastically applauded. Joe and Cindy approached the stage, were given floral leis to place around each other's necks, and told to pop a balloon that contained a chance to spin a wheel to win even more trips. Dream Merchant Curt leaned in and shared some insider scoop: "I know what's in the balloons because I fill them. If they pick red, they get the jackpot, and if you go up there, I'll tell you which one to pop!" Super.

Our interest was beginning to wane, and we held firm, even when their Numbers Guy joined our table to present us with a list of even better deals. They didn't want to let us deny our children a lifetime of memories, of frolic in the sand and sun, over a measly $150 per month for one week every other year in Vegas, plus you still get the 12 weeks a year at other resorts! Instead of paying all that money to rent a vacation house on the Outer Banks, you could invest in this Dream Resort, gain equity, write off the mortgage interest, plus join the vacation club, because really, isn't this the LIFESTYLE you DESERVE?

They seemed surprised that I kept going back to the bottom line, which is that if we had extra money each month, we'd be putting it towards existing debt or, oh, I dunno, silly me, saving for THREE COLLEGE EDUCATIONS.

Nope, sorry, we insisted, it just isn't the right time for us. Now how about hooking us up with those Zumanity tickets and letting us get on with our vacation? The fun had worn off like the gold from a gumball machine ring. We were done.

Dream Merchant Curt escorted us to the "Gifting" window, where we received our ticket vouchers, and handed us a pass to ride their shuttle back to the Strip. He also helpfully pointed us in the direction of the outlet mall, which, as it happened, was within walking distance, and that was good because my own dreamy Curt had managed somehow to pack only one shoe besides the pair of sneakers he wore (yes, way), and I insisted he needed to wear something other than athletic footwear to the clubs. (Call me crazy.)

And that is how we spent our first morning in Las Vegas. We've no regrets – it was a hilarious experience, the tickets to Zumanity were a huge score and the show was really great. But it turned out the best part of the whole thing was our night at Coyote Ugly, and that, readers, will be the subject for my next installment. Stay tuned…

Nasty rain makes people do funny things, I've decided... like pull weeds at 7:30 in the morning, bad weather included. know, it sounds strange but I can't really ellaborate other than saying it was fun. Yes, I just said that I had fun pulling weeds. But it is a little bit different than when your parents tell you to- so don't expect anything fancy when I come back home, mom.

... because I went home this weekend. First trip home from college. Guess what I had for dinner my first night home: 2 lean pockets and a 2 serving blue bunny ice cream dish (which I guess was better than what I had last night when I got back: fruit/yogurt, small salad and chocolate cake). I probably shouldn't complain about the food though since mom did my laundry, bought me clothes (holy smokes i found jeans at wal mart that were long enough and were somewhat proportionate to my huge thighs), bought me random items, cleaned my car (vacuum, rainX, windows), put new windshield wipers on my car, and filled my gas tank (gas was $2.99 !!!)

It was my first big drive by myself, and I didn't die. The way home was easy-peasy. I hit rush hour traffic in Topeka, KS but I let people pass me and realize that there were cars going just as slow in front of me so it was all good. I payed the tolls just fine too. But the way back. Dang, son. Let's just start off with saying one of the reasons I got new windshield wipers and rainX was because of the storm that was between me and the university. There were points at which I was going 50 in a 70 zone because visibility/ traffic was that bad. Add to that the semis that were following way too close and changing langes/making walls across the 3 lane interstate sporatically.

I should probably add that I went to my gym twice. Once on Friday, and again on Saturday morning. On friday they didn't make me exchange my keys for a locker because they know me/ my keys were attatched to my wallet. There was a new guy there (probably to replace gym boy) and he was freaking out when Jason told me I didn't have to turn my keys in. He was all like "who is she that she doesn't have to turn her keys in?!" and I'm all like "I'm important around here. Didn't you get the memo??" not really. But those thoughts were totally flying around the room. And one last thing (because this is getting long) at water aerobics I was the life of the party; 'cuz I'm cool like that.

Now it's time for my mid-morning nap.

I've mentioned some of the shows the other week in a similar post.

Angel: Being such a big Buffy fan I never really could get into Angel. I suppose it was mainly because I liked the dynamics of Buffy, the supporting cast and the dialogue. Angel just always seemed to try and be all gritty, urban and LA. However, it appears I was wrong, Angel is actually very good, the characters are great and I love Cordelia played by Charisma Carpenter. Her character has evolved so much since she started on Buffy. I'm not all convinced by some of the storylines in Angel though. Yes, I can understand and follow the arc in Pylea, but ever since Connor was born it has lacked. Everything that made the show good which is mainly how the characters work with each other isn't really there and the entire Cordelia ascension arc wasn't convincing.

Clone Wars: Liked it!

Desperate Housewives: Glad to see this back, but I'm not sure I actually like the show any more! They went all One Tree Hill, let's jump in the future, but the characters appear to have become unlikeable. Especially Susan which was such a great character. The mystery this season looks like it'll be good though, Edie and her new husband seem very intriguing.

Eureka: Eureka is a bit of a weird show, sometimes I feel like it doesn't quite know what it wants to do. The Sheriff annoys me more than he doesn't, I don't see why people like Allison Blake and it's too much of a weekly mystery show with no substantial arc. Well, that changed this season and they tried to implement a story arc which sort of worked, even though it felt extremely rushed at the end. And then there's the midseason break with a big cliffhanger. It's almost like it's an J. J. Abrams show!

Fringe: Meh. I don't like it. I don't like any of the characters, the show is incredibly boring and the only reason I'm still watching it is.. Well, I suppose I'm hoping for it to get better. The entire show doesn't make sense, it's a lot like Eureka apart from the light heartedness. The only thing I really like about the show is the superimposed lettering every time a new location is shown. It's a shame, I quite like Joshua Jackson.

Gossip Girl: The Bitch is back.. After all the 'It's not what you think' and 'I'm sorry' and the puppy dog eyes Serena and Dan are finally broken up. Serena is actually an interesting character now, but also quite unlikeable. Everyone apart from Jenny is incredibly boring and Dan gets more annoying with every episode. Can't they write him out or something?

Heroes: And another meh. Season 2 was ok ish at the end cause stuff actually happened and I liked some of the characters in it, but this season seems to have gone back to just being slow and boring. "Sylar, I'm your mother", Claire who is special [didn't we all know that from her you know, healing abilities and the 'Save the cheerleader, Save the world' crap anyway?], copper who is on a quest, Hiro and his mate doing the same as always and oh look, we've run out of storylines and have brought in a twin. Original.. It was nice seeing Veronica Mars' Francis Capra though, shame him and Kristen Bell didn't have any scenes together.

Jam and Jerusalem: What a brilliant show! It takes a while getting used to it and it is quite slow, but so, so brilliant. I have to admit, I don't like the main character at all, but her daughter is very good. As are the other women of the guild, the rich Caroline with her constant remarks of her son's friends, for example the Kaiser Chiefs or how an Arctic Monkey broke her dishwasher. The schizophrenic Dawn French or Joanna Lumley.. Everyone is great and I can't wait for the next season!

Lost in Austen: Great program, I love how it shows a completely new light to Jane Austen and Jemima Rooper is a great actress. I'm not too convinced by the ending of this, I don't think it suited the series well, but at the end of the day anything but a happy end would have come out wrong. And it had Alex Kingston which I already liked a lot in ER back when it was still good. And no one felt sorry for her boyfriend back in London?

No Heroics: BBC3's new attempt at a comedy show and three episodes in I'm still not sure if I like it or if it's funny. It's an interesting concept having a bar for heroes in London where they're not allowed to use their powers and things like the fan meeting was funny. But the characters don't really seem to work, there is no explanation why the same four people always hang out together and the chemistry between them doesn't work. However, there are some great powers!

One Tree Hill: I dislike this season's One Tree Hill. The characters are all over the place and there doesn't seem to be any friendship between any of them. There's the whole Brooke storyline which none of her friends cared about much. I can't believe they all believed she fell down the stairs and ended up with two perfect black eyes?! The Nanny Carrie and Dan storyline, please give me a break and I hope to God she's dead, although I half expect her to come back as a ghost a la Keith. Talking about death, could they make Quentin's death any more predictable? And what's the deal with Mouth leaving and no one caring? Or the amazing relationship Lucas and Peyton now have that we never get to see? Or Peyton's dad? I do hope the show turns itself around again. Soon!

Privileged: I'm actually really starting to like this show! The main character is really growing on me as she doesn't seem to be the Miss goody two shoes she originally came across as. Going to be interesting what this show develops into.

Rosemary and Thyme: So predictable, so lighthearted, but still nice to watch. Although they're a bit over the top and dare I say annoying in the last season.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl: It's like the episodes get shorter and shorter. Every episode is 22 minutes long, but seems so much shorter. This show desperately needs some additional characters. Bambi is annoying, very annoying even, but she was/is at least something new in the show.

Star Trek Voyager: I've continued watching Voyager and am now on S4E22. Before I started watching it all I was under the impression I had watched most of it in the last years and that there were only a handful of episodes I had missed. How wrong was I?! So far there were about 40 episodes that I hadn't seen before and I wasn't aware that there was some sort of story arc prior to the Borg. The entire Kazon and Seska storyline was excellent, as well as the first hints at the Borg.

The Office: Another show that started again and it was actually a quite funny episode. I think I've been liking the Office more since Steve Carell isn't the main focus of episodes as I don't like him in anything I've seen him in. Great to see Ryan's back, he's been one of my favourite characters since the start. Oh and the engagement, predictable much?

The Sarah Jane Adventures: Oh, look, they're writing out the main character and her family. Yeah, that will go down well..

The Simpsons: Loved the intro with Bobba Fett and the carbonite, but that was about it. It was a lot of 'been there, done that', sadly. This is the 20th season though, so I am wondering if there is any originality left that most importantly doesn't mess up the continuity somehow.

True Blood: Still not fully convinced if I like this or not, but it's very addictive at the same time. The accents are so very incredibly annoying though and the main character I look forward to now is Tara as everyone else doesn't appear to have more to them.

Weeds: Loved the season finale and definitely didn't see that coming which is something I've said about the last few finale's as well, I believe! Bring on the next season where everything should be very different all over again!

And then there's Strictly Come Dancing which I've really enjoyed so far! It's the first time I've watched it and it sort of makes me regret not having watched it the last years.

And I've watched a great documentary on Jacqueline du Pré who played on of my favourite classical pieces, Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor.

Also can't wait for CSI to start again soon!

I can't take it for real.  And her music is CRAP.  I'm sorry - I really tried.  And I like musical theatre.  In fact I went and saw Spring Awakening on Broadway today.  It won the Tony in 2007, and I've been dying to see it since I moved here.  Hunter Parrish, who plays Silas on "Weeds", is playing the lead right now - and he did a fabulous job and is actually a really talented singer.  Who knew!  He's so cute too.  I just can't quit him.

Perhaps I'll post a picture of it so that my readers can give me their advice (but today:

  • my allergies are pretty bad, and
  • it's Saturday, and
  • I start a new job on Monday, and
  • I just don't feel like it, and
  • I would rather rest).

My husband and I have lived the student life for so many years that it is hard to get into the mindeset of taking care of a lawn. And perhaps it's difficult because we don't own our house. Or perhaps the guilt is simply worse since we don't own our house.

One big problem I have is that I know nothing about plants. We have only one plant in our entire house - a Snake plant that requires virtually no care - which was bestowed upon us by my husband's parents.

Other problems I have with lawn care:

  • I don't really know what is a weed and what is not.
  • I actually feel guilty watering the brown patches on our lawn because I don't want to waste water.
  • If I pull out the tangle of leafy things overtaking our lawn, I fear it will look worse!
  • I can't bring myself to use the electric lawn mower provided for us by our landlord, because it's too loud.
  • I don't want to buy a push-mower because we don't own our house.

Sigh.

But sites like this give me hope. It is one family's answer to the problem of knowing little about nature.

Bangelijk goeie serie.

"Beter dan Desperate Housewives" hoorde ik van alle kanten maar het is haast niet vergelijkbaar. Oké, er wordt ook gespot met het hypocriete suburbia (oa. al te zien in de intro) en het gaat ook over -op het eerste gezicht- normale, brave huismoeders én huisvaders en zoals je al zelf al kan bedenken is dat niet echt het geval maar deze serie is toch nog net iets gewaagder en sarcastischer dan die andere Amerikaanse topserie.
Filmisch gezien was het even wennen want ik had de indruk dat de montage wat te povertjes was behandeld in het hele 'filmmaking process' maar ik ben er nu eenmaal aan gewend geraakt en zolang ze die stijl behouden tot op het einde van hun seizoenen kan ik er zeker mee leven.

little boxes all the same"

Ook leuk is het liedje dat de intro begeleidt. Het hele eerste seizoen is dat hetzelfde maar vanaf het tweede seizoen wordt datzelfde liedje steeds ingezongen door bekende en minder bekende gastzangers (Death Cab for Cutie, Regina Spektor, Elvis Costello, etc.).
Als je tijdens het bekijken van zo'n halfuur durende episode van Weeds zelf wat smoort zal je de liedjes tijdens de aftiteling keer op keer ongelofelijk goed vinden.
En oja, als je de cliffhanger van het eerste seizoen al waanzinnig vindt, ga je je een ongeluk verschieten bij die van het tweede seizoen!

Meer ga ik er niet over vertellen enkel dat je het gezien moet hebben!

Looking back, I don't think I have ever been part any elite groups of rabid followers of groundbreaking shows during their original broadcast run.  I just got into The Wire this summer, have never seen a full episode of Lost or Heroes or Weeds, and got on The Sopranos bandwagon late and fell off in short order.

So last summer, when HBO started pumping their new drama John From Cincinnati, I cleared my schedule for the premier and - even though it left me wholly confused and underwhelmed - was determined to struggle through the boring exposition of the contrived and nonsensical story so a few years down the line when the show was sweeping the Emmys (or being triumphantly snubbed), I could say I was there from the start.

I wouldn't exactly call this plan successful, as John From Cincinnati quickly went from bad to worse and was canceled immediately after the last episode of the first season aired.  But I survived a brutal test of patience and mettle, and I think I am a better man for it.  For those were the qualities that I was calling on during the first two and half episodes if The Island, and they did not fail me.

After suffering through the brain-numbingly forgettable introductory chapters, I am reaping the benefits of sticking with it.  If the season turned a corner with the last episode, it has now downed a fifth of Jack, shut off the headlights and started speeding down the fucking interstate.

While it took a few weeks to reach terminal velocity, the actual format of the game is finally creating some exciting drama.  As Rachel warned Johanna early on, the time would come when people would be begging to go into the challenges to secure themselves a key while they were still up for grabs.  She failed to mention how awesome it would be to watch all the plotting and positioning that would result in Ev getting gloriously, colossally shafted.  Man, seeing that wench bitch and moan as she was outmaneuvered at every turn is as satisfying as a television watching experience as you can find these days.

Now, I'm still sad that MTV's programming has collapsed upon itself and has become theater of the absurd, but at some point you have got to call a spade a spade.  As Redman so eloquently put it a few years back, "If you're gonna be a monkey, be a gorilla."

And that is what is going down, as these producers are pulling out all the stops.  First they lure Abram into a wasp's nest in search of more of the fresh fruit they planted on the set, and now they are throwing broken glass all over the floor and unleashing biblical plagues on the cast.  I was almost positive I caught a few frogs and some fiery hail in the previews for next week's episode.

TJ Lavin has also kicked it into high gear, throwing his weight around more than ever.  He seems to have graduated from simply admonishing cast members who are planning to quit and speaking in hilarious hyperbole to calling out the entire cast for their bullshit antics and schemes.  I really find it hard to believe that he actually gives a shit about what happens just so long as the paychecks keep clearing, so attribute this, as well, to the producers trying harder to exert external influence in an attempt to make the show more successful.

I find all this a bit apropos given the current economic bailout legislation that is being written into law.  Just as poor lending and borrowing practices coupled with hokey, contrived securities caused the credit markets to cave in and required government intervention; poor casting and hokey, contrived formats and jobs had also left The Real World/Road Rules franchise tepid and in need of some serious behind-the-scenes power moves.

Let's just hope everything works out as well for the economy as it has for The Real World/Road Rules Challenge.

There is an attitude, or perhaps a suite of attitudes, that I have found to be helpful for the amateur gardener.  For me, these attitudes have been cultivated by the very act of gardening, but there is no reason they can't be started before hand.

Buddhists will see a lot of parallels with the results of meditation here, and I don't think that is coincidental.  In my experience, many people take to gardening for the same reasons people take to meditation, which may include stress relief or relaxation, or the desire to just be somewhere still.  It makes sense to me that the outcomes might be similar as well.  Okay, enough with the hoo-hah, let's get into the list itself:

  • Acceptance - You can't control the weather.  You can't control your climate.  There are some plants you can't grow.  There are some weeds you can never get rid of.  That's the way it is.  Accept
